The Money Man is book one in The Consultants series by Nancy Herkness. This is my very first book by this author. I chose it because the audio was available on Kindle Unlimited and I thought it would be a good road trip book. In all honesty, I don’t listen to audio books. I didn’t really enjoy the narrator and the pace was too slow for my liking. But, when we got to our destination, I continued the book the old fashioned way and enjoyed it so much more.

Alice Thurber likes her life orderly. She is single and lives with her two cats. She runs her accounting business out of her home and has several small businesses as clients. Numbers represent order for Alice. Everything is in it’s place. So when four of her clients have very small discrepancies in their books, she can’t rest until she figures it out. After trying everything she can think of, she reaches out to a large firm that is starting a program to help small businesses when they need assistance. Little did she know that when she filled out that on line form, her life would be forever changed.

Derek Killion is one of three co-owners of KRG, a large consulting firm. He and his two partners have built the business from the ground up. In the beginning, they struggled like everyone else. Now that they are successful, he wants to give back by helping other businesses. When he first saw Alice’s issue, he thought it would be a fifteen minute job. Figure out where her error was and pat himself on the back. But try as he might, he couldn’t find it either. And just like Alice, it bothered him not having everything add up perfectly. So he will just have to meet in person with Alice. Only he had no idea that as soon as he saw her, as soon as they touched, he wouldn’t be able to stay away.

Derek and Alice have instant chemistry. That touch that sparks right up your arm. They tried to keep their relationship professional but the attraction was just too much for either of them. Alice is convinced that Derek is way out of her league. And Derek has been hurt before. Not to mention that he has no time for anything but work. But he just can’t stay away from her.

“You’re good at the verbal foreplay.”
“Wait until we get to the nonverbal part.”

As Alice and Derek are working to try to figure out the problem with the accounts, they also are becoming closer and closer. At the same time, they’ve managed to stir up the hornet’s nest while looking for the issues. And they find themselves in a lot more trouble than they ever imagined.

I really did enjoy this. Especially the second half where things really started moving along. The next book in the series is The Hacker. It is Alice’s friend, Dawn, and Derek’s partner, Leland’s book. It sounds really interesting and I look forward to reading it. I need to add here that this book had the sweetest epilogue. It may have even made my eyes get a little misty! I love it when an author does that so my very last memory of the book is such a wonderful one.

For a book about two accountants this was way more exciting than I was expecting. The intrigue behind the discrepancies and the investigation had me pretty hooked to the story.

The characters were a bit of fresh air as well. Despite both main characters being accountants, we didn't get the typical nerdy characters. I really liked that. They both still displayed some typical characteristics, more in the heroine than the hero but it was nice to see that they weren't a copy cat.

Derek is portrayed as very good looking but he didn't have the typical playboy behavior that came with that. Alice did have a big passion for regency romance and had two cats, but she was also not shy and had girlfriends she hung out with.

Plus we got a few side characters that added interest to the story. I liked them enough that I would love to see a story for each of them.

Overall, a fun read!

Regency ⭐️

I’ve found this gem on Netgalley and requested the arc based solely on the blurb. It seemed like my cup of tea, and I wasn’t wrong! I loved it!

As you might know already, this is the story of a bookkeeper who finds some issues with her clients’ finances. Desperate to find the root of the problem, she stumbles upon a program offered by a huge company in their field, meant to help out small CPAs like her. Only it appears the problem isn’t so easy to fix or to figure out, so when one of the founding members of that big company takes an interest, well, let’s just say that there will be a lot of balancing..

This is how Mrs. Herkness managed to spark my interest and get me hooked on her book. I was desperate to turn every page, as for the life of me I couldn’t put it down. It was incredibly exciting to see what was happening next.

My only “issue” with the story was the heroine’s passion for Regency romance novels, something is in a galaxy, far, far away from my liking. Those of you who know me will understand this, as historical romance is not something I’ll ever stomach. So every time the heroine will compare the hero with a Duke or mention the word “regency” i’ll shudder.
Besides this, I liked everything. Well, maybe not the descriptions like “her insides turned liquid with pure want”, but again, I truly enjoyed the whole story and the characters when they found sexual innuendos in mathematics. Highly entertaining!

”ARC provided through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.”

It would be an absolute honor to have you as my guest on my blog too. Stop by anytime you want :)

Sweet, sexy, romantic.

This was such a great story. What I thought might be a little dry due to the job descriptions - shame on me - actually was a sexy and heated story with a bit of intrigue too! Who knew what was behind that numbers guy's suit and running through that brain...yum.

The author treated us to a unique and interesting twist on a numbers game and I love the connection that she built between the two main characters. Flirty and spicy,, with a touch of thrills and suspense, made this a delight to read and highly engaging too!

This was my first book by this author, but i will definitely be looking for more from her!

My second book from Miss Herkness does not disappoint me at all. In fact, I do enjoy it very much. It is a bit old fashion romance with a nod to historical romance references.

The chemistry between Derek and Alice is sweet and tender. Not naughty over the top. I do like both of them are actually a nerd who loves numbers and their connection is tender. The author tooks her time to build the chemistry between the characters.

There is a minor plot of abduction.

Overall this is a wonderful read.

The Money Man introduced you to Alice and Derek. They both found a love of numbers and have a bumpy past with at least one parent. She is a bookkeeper, and he's a cofounder of KRG. When she realizes that some of her clients' accounts have unusual discrepancies, she reaches out to Derek's company for help.

Now he thought this little problem was going to be super easy to solve. Like in 10 minutes tops. Unfortunately, he couldn't figure out the solution and it irked him. So, he does the next best thing and goes out to New Jersey to see Alice. The last thing he expected was to find a potential love interest.

The chemistry between these two was addicting. Heck, beyond that. I wouldn't necessarily claim it as a workplace romance but that's because she didn't work for him. They did work together on the discrepancies though.

With each twist and turn, these two are getting closer to figuring out the big scam. Luckily Derek's other cofounders are working along with them too. Four heads are better than one and the villain's definitely underestimate them all.

As for the romance, I ate it all up. The tension in the beginning teased me. Then we finally get to the moments I was waiting for and the pages just flew by. The ending was also really cute. I liked how they all dressed up like the characters from her favorite books. It definitely made me smile and now I can't wait to jump into the sequel!

The Money Man by Nancy Herkness is the first book in The Consultants Series. this is so different first of all. I had no idea what I was going to read aside from what the blurb states. The writing drew me in right away. I’ve never read a Nancy Herkness book before and I would read another when I’m looking for this particular writing style.

This is a contemporary book told in a more harlequin/old school type of writing style. I loved it actually. It was unique and interesting. I also love stories that are told in third person. Third person POV works best for romantic suspense books like this one.

Our heroine Alice Thurber owns her own bookkeeping business in New Jersey. When she realizes a few of her clients have financial discrepancies, she goes searching for the answer. Alice is such a likable heroine. She’s not innocent to the point of being virginal which annoys me but does have a naïve point of view in that she assumes people are generally good. I liked Alice a lot and connected with her. The author did a great job writing her vulnerabilities without having to make us sit through an actual family scene. I like when authors just tell us about main character’s families rather than make us endure a character speaking with their parents.

Derek Killion owns a huge financial firm in New York City. The distance between NYC and NJ makes this realistic to the story.

When Derek helps Alice with her client’s issue, he and his partners quickly realize there is more to it than just a few dollars. The plot unfolds there while Derek and Alice connect intimately.
I’d have to be in the mood to read the other book in the series for this particular style but I’d read another one of her books.

3.5 Please quite enjoyed this and appreciated the audiobook coming free on ku. I just had this overriding sense of bewilderment listening to this, wondering why they’d go all Nancy Drew themselves instead of just reporting it then moving on. And that kind of spoiled it a bit for me. Complete story.

3.5 stars. I really liked this book for the most part, but the ending was a turn off for me. Idk what it is with the contemporary romances I’ve been choosing, but this is the second one in a short time where the heroine is obsessed with historical romance and wants to act out her fantasies of the past. I’m just very much not a person who understands an obsession with the past to that level. The end was pretty cringe when the hero and heroine both dressed up as if they were in regency England and did the waltz while having a very “proper” discussion about their feelings. I had second hand embarrassment for book characters. That’s a new low for me. The rest of the book was good, although I do wish the heroine had a slightly higher self-esteem.

Also, this is available to read and listen for free on Kindle Unlimited, which is a nice bonus and makes me feel like I’m getting my money’s worth with KU. 😅

Safe; not sure if heroine was a virgin, it was never stated explicitly, and she didn’t behave like one, but there were mentions of how much of an antisocial hermit she was and how little she dated and never allowed those men to progress past dates... Hero not a manwhore, he was engaged but his ex, while mentioned somewhat often, never makes an appearance. No om/ow drama, no om/ow scenes, no cheating.

THE MONEY MAN is the first instalment in Nancy Herkness’ contemporary, adult THE CONSULTANTS erotic, romantic suspense series focusing on three friends and business partners Derek Killion, Leland Rockwell, and Tully Gibson who own KRG Consulting Group. This is KRG co-founder Derek Killion, and bookkeeper Alice Thurber’s story line.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Derek and Alice) THE MONEY MAN focuses on the building relationship between KRG co-founder Derek Killion, and bookkeeper Alice Thurber, and the search for the truth. Alice Thurber owns a small bookkeeping business but struggles with a few questionable results since installing a new accounting software that leaves her frustrated and looking for help. Enter Derek Killion of KRG Consulting Group, and the man with whom Alice will fall in love. What ensues is the building romance and relationship between Alice and Derek, and the potential fall-out as Derek, Alice and Derek’s partners uncover a dangerous trail of espionage, fraud, computer hackers and the possibility of financial ruin for thousands of small businesses.

Derek Killion doesn’t do relationships in the wake of his engagement that ended badly. Meeting Alice Thurber drew Derek like a moth to a flame but a flame with the potential to burn if he got too close. Alice Thurber believed Derek was out of her league in all things including romance and love. Growing up the daughter of a professional model, Alice never measured up to her mother’s ideals, and in this Alice considers herself less than worthy of Derek’s affections and love. Working together to uncover the truth behind the software anomalies, Derek would soon discover there is more to Alice than book smarts and a pretty face.

The relationship between Alice and Derek begins as a business arrangement when his firm offers ‘free’ services to small, independent firms. From the outset, Derek and Alice fantasized about one another but neither one had dared crossed the line from professional to personal until Derek offered Alice a night out of town. The $ex scenes are intimate, erotic and intense without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Derek’s business partners Leland Rockwell, and Tully Gibson; Alice’s mother, and her friends Gabrielle, Natalie and Dawn.

THE MONEY MAN is a story of betrayal and fraud; friendships and partners; romance, relationship, and falling in love. The fast paced premise is imaginative and inviting; the characters are flirty, sassy and real; the romance is spicy and inspiring. THE MONEY MAN is an edgy and captivating introduction to Nancy Herkness’ THE CONSULTANTS series.

This was okay. It’s a fast paced romance novel with a dash of suspense/action. But somehow I didn’t feel any zing from either MC.

Honestly? I found them a tad boring and I’m a financial analyst like them!!! So while I appreciated and could relate to all the accounting stuff, I was just meh about them as a couple. In fact, at times, their inner thoughts got too corny/cheesy for me.

Normally, if a book has an epilogue, me being an epilogue junky, I subconsciously gives more “swoony points” to a book. But this book’s epilogue was too contrived for me that I deducted swoony points from it’s score. Just not my thing. *shudder/cringe* Sorry.

Leland, one of the H’s partners, seems way more interesting to me. I love a sexy nerd.

This was a wholly enjoyable read! I really liked our main characters and the story. I feel like these characters had more nuanced than one would usually expect from this sort of book, the author clearly took time into considering how to make these characters feel like real people. I think one of my favourite little details was Alice's love for Regency Romance and how she'd compare them to her experiences with Derek. It felt so smooth and easy and really added a lil extra charm to her character.

Confession time...I didn’t read the blurb for Nancy Herkness’s The Money Man. Since becoming a fan of Nancy a few years ago, I just wanted to read the book. I was pleasantly surprised by several things. The Money Man contains a little suspense and both the hero and heroine are accountants!

Alice Thurber isn’t a risk-taker. After growing up in an unsteady, unreliable family, Alice turned to numbers because they were consistent and made sense. Alice owns and runs a small bookkeeping company out of her home in New Jersey. After switching several of her clients over to a new accounting software, she starts to notice little small inconsequential shortfalls in the numbers. After coming up empty as to why this was happening, Alice turns to KRG Consulting Group and their Small Business Initiative, aimed to help small businesses in need.

Derek Killion’s specialty is finance. He represents the “K” in KRG Consulting Group. He never wants to let the fact that the company is now a high-powered consulting firm known worldwide distract him and his partners from their humble beginnings. As a way to honor those who helped them succeed and give back, Derek convinces his partners Leland Rockwell and Tully Gibson to create the KRG Small Business Initiative. Derek is weeks away from having to leave the country on an extended business trip, but when the first request comes into the SBI for help, he doesn’t want to pass it off to one of his partners. Thinking the shortfall is an easy fix, he contacts Alice to meet with her, never expecting she’s about to throw a curveball into his well structured and planned out life.

As Alice and Derek look into the accounting discrepancy, they soon find out there’s more going on than meets the eye. One innocent question on Alice’s part puts her in the crosshairs of a dangerous madman set on revenge. As time runs out, Derek and Alice are going to have learn to be creative in their quest to save their lives and the livelihoods of hundreds.

The Money Man was a book I could not put down. Alice and Derek each prove you can’t judge a book by its cover. Their attraction and connection are instant. I loved the surprise of this being a romance with suspense elements. I loved even more that I was on the edge of my seat, wondering what was going to happen. The main characters of the second and third books have already been introduced. I’m looking forward to seeing how those stories play out, with the heroes being a computer whiz and a security expert.

This is my first read from the author and I wasn't disappointed. First of all that cover....
Alice is a self employed bookkeeper who works from home and keeps her little world well ordered and for good reason. Reasons you find out as her backstory unravels throughout the book. When she finds several discrepancies is several of her regular accounts, she's befuddled. She likes her books to balance right down to the penny. The amounts are so small, the business owners are not concerned however it bothers Alice to the nth degree, so much so when she finds an online site offering help to small businesses she sends an e mail to them. KRG is a large successful money handling business owned by three friends. This little business site was Dereks idea as a way to give back to small businesses because they too had their share of issues when they started up. Derek takes on this request from Alice thinking it would be an easy fix, while he's also trying to stay on top of a very large account they just acquired, one that demands his full attention. He contacts her, the two go back and forth on problem solving and what looked like an easy fix becomes a lot more complicated when the issue seems to be with the newly acquired bookkeeping software each of the business owners are using, including Alice. When one of Derek's partners who does the IT aspect of their business discovers some serious problems and who may be behind it, the issue involves all three partners now. Add to that is keeping Alice safe, not easy for someone who needs her well ordered world to survive.
This book was just enough mystery to keep me interested, and flipping those pages and moreover well written, fully developed characters. All were interesting and I am definitely interested in getting to know Derek's two partners. Nicely done twists and turns and a great ending. Yes I want more!
I'm ringing in with a 4.5 on this one.

A love story involving two accountants? Ok, why not! I'm an accountant after all.

Alice, ann accountant, finds a little missmatch. Whenever she looks into it, it always pops out. She reaches out to a firm called KRG to help with this seemingly unsolvable bookkeeping problem. She has no idea the hunky owner himself would investigate the issue. When she meets Derek, the attraction is intoxicating. In the events that follow, they both find themselves in great danger.

The book is written very well, and there's something charming about this story as well. I really did like it.

My review :

Will a bookkeeper working hand in hand with an accountant find her happily ever after when her life’s securities are shattered...

I do remember when I meet Mrs Nancy Herkness in Paris two years ago, she took part in a discussion about billionaires being the contemporary duke, and with the heroine dreaming of the hero as an imaginary duke, it is like reading a continuation of this talk.
Alice is an heroine like I love them, strong, resilient with some insecurities but able to stand for herself. Like me, she is addicted to Historical romance, well minus the billionaire mogul in close range.
Derek, despite his movie star’s good look, is no womanizer, he is more devoted to his business than anything else. But the more time passes, the more he feels unsatisfied. Why he subjected to offer free help and council to small business. So when Alice’s demand popped up, he nearly dismissed it as it being nothing, a fifteen minutes problem to solve.
From their first encounter, their chemistry reached the heights, and from there, they quickly cross the bridge, each stunned by the other, unable to let it go.
I loved to see them learning about one another, to win each other trust , growing in the other’s heart and soul. The background plot added to build up the tension, until it reached its peak.
Like the Wager of Heart series, it introduces I suppose the protagonists of the books to come, and I can’t wait to see what scenario Mrs Herkness will drag them in.
One thing is sure, the author did not disappoint, as unusual, a 5 stars story.

I was granted an advance copy by the publisher Montlake, and preordered my own. Here is my true and unbiased opinion.

This was my first book by Nancy Herkness and it won’t be the last! I really enjoyed this cute and sexy romance with a dash of suspense! What happens when 2 accountants are solving a financial mystery? We get a steamy and intriguing read!

Derek and Alice had an immediate attraction and I loved watching them act around it. Joined together as a part of a business deal, they couldn’t deny the chemistry they shared, but they tried to keep things professional. However, in the pursuit of solving the mystery and countless fantasies about each other, they crossed the line and grew a lot closer than they intended.

I loved how the author presented the characters in this story. At first glance, they seem to be complete opposites, but with every turned page we see many similarities, from the profession in which they work, to experiences from the past. I loved to see them open up towards each other and the slow demolition of the walls they surrounded themselves. Their passion was palpable and sizzling.

I adored the secondary characters in this story and I can’t wait to read their stories (especially Leland’s!).

Overall, it was a great read, full of tension, hotness and surprises. I really enjoyed solving the financial mystery and the growing romance between main characters. I’ll definitely look out for the next book in this series!

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads ~~

This is the first in a new series, and I am definitely looking forward to future installments. I enjoyed the level of world building and the introduction to the men who started and are super successful in their business. I like that they each have their own specialisms, and yet that they work closely and support each other. Here Derek, the money man, gets his chance at love ... and it is brilliant how the author manages to make him sexy even if his profession would suggest otherwise. In fact I loved how even he is surprised at Alice being a bookkeeper and yet also young and desirable. Throw in the cheeky play on words regarding statistics and this was just the story I would have loved to have written.

The plot centres around Alice using new accounting software which has caused her to find a number of small errors. She is quite certain that there are no errors in her work, indeed she repeats them manually to check ... This turns into a massive, dangerous issue - and is really well constructed. It gives Derek a chance to give support to a small business, as he is somewhat jaded about his never ending work schedule.

Together they work together to solve the mystery and stop the crime ... and in the process develop a strong affinity for each other and indulge in the pleasure that they offer each other. It is intelligent, romantic and gives both of them an understanding of what they had been missing out on in their career focussed lives.

A slightly slow start, but soon got really good - recommended!

I received an ARC from Netgalley in return for an honest review.

This was a perfectly nice read and passed a couple of hours but I did not get excited by it.

The hero, Derek, (sorry but whilst I am sure there are lots of nice Dereks in the world, it is not a name I would think of as ‘heroic’ in any way, shape or form), and the heroine Alice come together because Alice has discovered an inexplicable error in her customers accounts. Derek’s firm (incredibly successful and wealthy) provides help to small entrepreneurs. Turns out that the software is designed by Russians and is intended to rob users. The. villains are one dimensional and pretty boring. Derek’s partners look they might be interesting so perhaps there’s going to be more books?

Derek and Alice are attracted to each other, succumb very quickly, have lots of hot sex in between acting as private investigators who ultimately get caught and nearly murdered by the baddies.

This should have been an exciting, fast developing story, but it just plodded along. Sorry but I didn’t find it exciting at all. Derek and Alice were a nice couple and they got their happy ever after. Fabulous!

The best thing was the author’s homage to Georgette Heyer - one of my very favourite authors of all time!

As I said, a perfectly pleasant read but somehow it just misses the mark.

This is the first book in The Consultants series by Nancy Herkness.

I have become a big fan of Herkness’s writing over the last year or so. I just stumbled upon her one day and was so glad I did.

Basic premise: This book features the men of KRG Consulting. Alice Thurber is an accountant at a small self-owned firm where she does the books of about seven or so companies. She purchased some software from what seemed like a USA based company that was on the up and up. But little discrepancies start showing up in her client’s accounts. Just small amounts that they don’t want her to worry about. But she is still concerned. So she contacts KRG through their small business initiative. What they uncover is a bigger kettle of fish than any of them realized.

I enjoyed the play between Derek Killion and Alice Thurber. At first it was all business between them and it took Alice awhile to realize that this movie star looking man could have any interest in her. She was small town and he was big city.

I though the author played well between the suspense of the mystery part of the book and the budding romance between Derek and Alice. It all flowed rather nicely just like I have come to expect from Herkness’s writing.

This is a series I will definitely want to continue with. Herkness does series well. She has a few in her pocked and I highly recommend them to all the romance lovers out there. If you love a good romantic suspense book, definitely check this one out. You won’t be disappointed.

I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.

This is the first book I read by this author and was a very good choice when I read the synopsis while searching at NetGalley for some new books, this one catch my attention at first because of the cover but then the synopsis completely won me.
It had a very interesting plot, the perfect amount of sexual tension, suspense and some villains whom just add the xtra tension to this H and H.
Heroes... now I think they are actually heroes inside the story, Alice and her honesty and responsibility to protect her clients is the reason she opens an investigation with the help of Derek and his company, and friends.
The tension between this two is instantly, right when they’ve meet for the first time, but things gets a little danger for Alice and just like she always dreams about it, Derek became her historical Prince Charming .
This story ends with a HEA and with the perfect epilogue after all the tension we go through mostly the entire book.
I’m totally recommend to all of you who likes a romantic suspense.

Thanks to NetGalley for providing the kindle ebook.

Think a romance between two accountants is destined to be a snooze fest? Think again! Nancy Herkness has created a story filled with mystery, danger, intriguing characters, and sizzling romance that reeled me in and refused to let go.

Derek and Alice are adorable together. I enjoyed their set-the-sheets-on-fire chemistry and the surprisingly sexy math humor only the two of them "get." Derek is such a good guy. I love how protective he is of Alice but also how much he likes, respects, admires, and desires her. His grand gesture at the end of the book will win the heart of every regency romance fan who picks up this book. And buttoned-up Alice, when she finally steps out of her tightly controlled comfort zone, has all the makings of a truly awesome, kick-ass heroine...with an analytical brain and a cat-loving, marshmallow heart.

The secondary characters add another layer of richness - and danger - to the story. Natalie and Dawn are the kind of friends every woman should have in her corner. We see enough of Leland and Tully, Derek's partners at KRG, to have me salivating for their stories. And, let me just say, Nancy Herkness knows how to create a truly chilling, and realistic, villain. Don't turn your back on these guys.

If you're looking for fast-paced action, likable characters, twists and turns, sizzling chemistry, a touch of danger, and a swoon-worthy happy ending, I enthusiastically recommend The Money Man by Nancy Herkness.

DNF at 38%.

I like the idea that this woman has stumbled on something pretty sinister through her bookkeeping business and is working with an awesome guy to figure it out. That was interesting... though it doesn't really progress much and we hear a LOT about small amounts of numbers and the endless ways she's researching what happened. Also, she seems a bit brainless to not even question the software for so long.

But I cannot stand when a heroine bad talks herself. And she does it a lot.

And I find it annoying how instalust they are. Yes, there's some liking each other because they're both smart and driven, but there's so much "oh he/she is so attractive" going on in their brains. I cannot explain it, but it just annoys me so much.

And we're at the point where they're about to sleep together and I could not care less. Yawn.

Oh my goodness!

Nancy gives you everything in this new series! Love, giggles, espionage, danger, thrills and oh the heat!

I love the characters and the way they blend so well together. I so enjoyed the building romance between Alice and Derek. The friendships they both have are steadfast and solid.

Alice's dilemma becomes Derek's mission and he takes his partners in with him for the hunt. I could almost see the wheels turning in all of their heads as they put the pieces together. There were hang onto your seat moments that had me gritting my teeth but this was followed by some major fist pumps!

The epilogue is going to make you misty-eyed and swoony. ;) Loved that part!
