Never before had I seen a book with the surreal quality of being at the same time so beautiful and so very terrible.

It is a book that will undoubtedly move you, first in a visceral, brutal way, and then, if you can stomach the (superb) drawings, it will be a delight to look at and flip through.

It will also make you wonder if art can indeed be ammoral, or if there are subjects that should not be depicted at all, much less given a whole book (and a gorgeous edition, too).

Mostly artwork, with a few pages here and there of text. Horrifying horrifying text.

Like the part wherein it is described that a young woman went into the forest for some self bondage. Bound herself to a tree. Had the key to her cuffs in her hand. And, once she was found (day later, days?), she had to have her groin repaired. You see, I'd left out a part. The part where she had stuffed some latex gloves up herself. I'm not sure how many, but more than one. No, that didn't 'ruin' her vagina. No, it was what she had put in the gloves before shoving them up herself. That would be the live beetles. Who didn't particularly want to be in there. And latex is a shield for some things, not for the power of beetles. Three beetles were found to be still alive when they found her in the woods.

And that was a relatively gentle story compared to some of the even more brutal tortures displayed in the art.

I'm probably going to have nightmares about this book now. Seriously, beetles. Live. Shoved up your vagina. I didn't even like seeing the picture of the beetle by itself on a blank page. And that was before I learned of the fate of that beetle. *shudders* (more of the fate of the person who encountered the beetle).

I have no idea how to rate this book.

I can't help to wonder what went through Samura's head while drawing every and each of this pictures.
This book is not for anyone, at least you have to find some kind of fascination in the pictures while exploring the details left by Samura and at the same time being able to endure utter disgust.
An interesting way to explore the limits of what art can portray and where can beauty be found.
