Combat is literally her middle name. Chimeric Adaptive Enhanced Combat Operator. Caeco Jensen was designed to fight, trained to kill, shaped for war, honed as a weapon that follows orders without question. But free from her dark past, she's chosen to put her skills to use with the FBI. One of a kind, alone in the world, she struggles to fit in, even in a world that grudgingly accepts vampires, witches, and werewolves. With a new boss and facing out of this world threats, Caeco will need to reach deep down, past her superhuman attributes, and into the core of her humanity if she's going to find her place in the world... and move beyond her past.

I think the biggest problem I have with this book is the timing. Caeco hasn't been a significant part of the story since book 8. She did have a little bit of an appearance in book 9 but since then she has been either absent in the overall story or only has a very small part. Having a book come out now about her just doesn't make sense to me. I had already come to grips with her not being part of Declan's life anymore. All the questions I had about her behavior in the past, I had already forgotten about. I would have been more interested if this story or something like it was told after book 9. That would have made more sense. The story is pretty simple and deals with Caeco's job at the FBI.
The FBI is working on a case dealing with the alien invasion. As one would expect, Declan comes up quite a bit in the story and him and Stacy make a couple of appearances. Again the timing felt off to me on this story. It has to have been at least a couple of years since Caeco left school and yet she keeps talking about her friends Mack, Jetta, and Ashley like they still talk all the time? Shouldn't she be trying to make friends with her fellow agents or try something different. I also hate the way she keeps calling Declan "kid". I am not really a fan of Caeco. I liked her in book 7 and the start of book 8, but I ended up hating her in the second half of book 8. She was okay in book 9, but she was such a bitch to Declan ever since. He did nothing but help her every time she asked. I think my opinion of her has been set for too long. Nothing in the story showed me that she has had any growth as a character. Again, I might have been more sympathetic to her point of view if I would have read about it sooner, but that didn't happen. Overall this story was just okay. It was in the demon accords world so of course I would read it but not my favorite character and not my favorite story.
C.A.E.C.O. By: John Conroe Narrated by: James Patrick Cronin She didn't have a loving or warm upbringing but she is well respected theaters of or maybe because of her futuristic body parts and she was taught to be a fighting machine. This is more about her and how she fits in with the whole team! A great gal that you feel for because her and others were made like this, no maternal nurturing yet she is totally amazing! Excellent narration!
This was an interesting 14th instalment of the Demon Accords series. This is a pulpy UF series that is always very readable despite a few notable flaws.
This book was more of a side story with Caeco as the lead character. Caeco is Declan’s old girlfriend. As a genetically modified human she is powerful but not a super power like Declan, Tania, or Chris. We got to follow her as she made her way as a young agent on the FBI’s Special Task Force Unit.
It was an interesting story that definitely helped establish Caeco as her own character. She was the sole POV character in this story. We got to learn about more about her life and her relationship with her mother and work colleagues. The story itself was fast paced enough with Caeco and her team tracking down a potential alien threat to the US government.
Omega was a fun support character as always. It remains interesting to see the super AI interact with folks other than Declan!
I think the fact that Conroe has been so willing to introduce new POV characters and new lead POV characters for whole books like this has really added to the depth of the series and given it solid storytelling legs!
All in all this was another fun instalment of the series.
Rating: 3.5 stars
Audio Note: James Patrick Cronin did fine with the audio. It was one of his better outings as the annoying foreign accented characters, which he really struggles with, were kept to a minimum in this one.
I've said this in reviews of previous books - I love this series! However... I feel like the writing isn't the same anymore... Don't get me wrong the overall storylines and plot are entertaining and intriguing but it's the little things that just somehow seem off to me... For instance one of the things that bothers me is the main character (not just in this novel but in others in this series) seemingly for no reason talks to the reader - it's not even something that happens all the time it's just at certain intervals and it doesn't feel like a 4th wall break or even a sort of diary or recounting of events it just feels to me like the author really wanted to put a certain phrase or reference or metaphor in that part of the novel and there wasn't another character in the scene so it ended up being directed to the readers. That's something I really really don't like.
Overall I still like this series and it was refreshing to have a different point of view and a peek at the events from the governments side but I hope that future novels will reestablish that certain something that drew me to this series in the first place...

Really entertaining, my only main gripe is that I came in disliking Caeco for how she treated Declan in book 8. Another issue is I think she's a bit of an idiot working for the government who have treated her like garbage since day 1, or you can even say her birth, instead of Demidova corp, who has helped her since she first met Chris and co and have shown they value her honestly a bit too much in my opinion; her mother even works there, but because her ex boyfriend is part of the main world saving team she is too stubborn to work in the same MASSIVE company where she would basically never see him anyway. Past these initial problems I had, the book has some interesting mystery with the alien Vorsook trying to subjugate social media into thinking that they aren't a threat, and Caeco and her team rooting them out. There's some big issues with Declan that make it kind of part of the main story, not enough in my opinion to not make it 14.5 instead of 15, especially since Caeco hasn't been relevant since book 6 and isn't relevant after this book either. So if you're looking for a good side story this book is great, but don't get your hopes up with this being hugely relevant to the main story. If I didn't dislike Caeco like I said earlier I'd give it a 4.25, not ground breaking literature but really a fun and entertaining read, but my bias towards the main character and disliking that Conroe made is book 15 instead of 14.5 make me give it a 3.5 instead.
I loved all the cross over and the growth from those characters. I liked the story line. Caeco hasn't always been my favorite person, yet I never hated her like some do. It's nice to see she's happy with her choices and doing some good. It's also nice to see some resolution to old situations and acceptance. Fan is a great new character with a lot of potential. The new SAC feels like a real person, not an obtuse pain in the butt like Krupp was.
This story opens up some new avenues for future developments while staying true to the DA overall.
I may be due for a re-read of the series because I barely remember this character from earlier in the Demon Accords.
That said I enjoyed the story well enough. I love how Conroe writes his characters all in superlatives, everyone is the best at everything, and yet he still makes it fun. Absolute proof that Gary Stu and Mary Sue can be entertaining.
I was slightly nervous about reading this one, probably just as nervous as I was when John Conroe switched from Chris to Declan's POV. I need not have feared however. Caeco is unique in this world, just as much so as Chris, Declan and Tanya, although on the face of it not as powerful, I think this is sometimes more enjoyable to read. She really has to think and use everything her genetic engineering gave her in order to make her missions a success. She also knows when she's in over her head and is not afraid to be grateful for help, which she does need! Caeco has an interesting viewpoint and I really enjoyed reading from it and hope that we get more. Her interactions with Declan were enlightening and she is definitely growing up. From having grown up in a lab, it was perhaps understandable that Caeco made so many mistakes with her personal life and found human emotions and relationships difficult. This is Caeco in a team, trying, learning and growing. I really came to like and respect her. The threat of the Voorsook (spelling? sorry I listen) is one that she and her team are focused on they use old fashioned investigative skills, along with the help of Omega to root out a bad seed. I loved the new characters and am in particular very interested in a Chinese friend! Lots of good things to come still.
Well that was interesting and really good. Caeco is the main character and POV here. Omega obviously likes her as he is very frequently in direct contact with her. We get the difficulties that she had with her last leader but the new one seems to appreciate her even if the director doesn't. The president definitely knows that she is an asset. So when they are investigating an organization that is trying to compromise information to fight the alien invasion. While investigating, a side story involving Declan happens that solidifies their friendship and helps Stacia and Caeco know where they stand.
I appreciated this book though I don't think that it expanded on the main Demon Accords plot and is more a spin off. I also think it could have come several books back as Caeco really hasn't been seen though the background investigation is that of the aliens which is in later books. Still, it is more a spin off character story than substance for the DA universe.
So this was great I always liked caeco way back when she was first introduced she's always been an interesting character to me I was shocked to learn not many fans like her but hey the "shipping wars" in any fandom can be very cutthroat anyway this was a fantastic side story and a great new look at the characters of demon accords I really really want to see more of caeco and fan working together that would be cool. I definitely recommend fans read this.
I always knew Caeco wouldn't be a permanent part of Declan's life, but I didn't like the way their breakup went down. It was good to see her growth, as she's always been a complex character. It was kind of funny that her capture had less of an effect on her than her epiphany over the relationship. What I really enjoyed about the story was that we got to see the actions of the main team from the other side, and that Conroe is so willing to develop his secondary characters. Liked seeing Katrina again as well. Overall, a great read on a hot afternoon.
This was really good, it kinda redeemed Caeco in my eyes and now I realize how unfair I have been in judging her in the last few books. This investigation style for the FBI was really awesome, it inspired me to do the same for my own writing. This novel was also about self-discovery and make Caeco more human in our eyes. The author certainly changed my mind about her.
I still liked this book, but it is definitely not one of my favorites in the series. Caeco is a great character and I liked seeing her evolved even more. I'm just getting a little tired how every other book in this series is an off shoot away from the main story line. And does nothing to really further that main story line. While this is an okay book, it isn't great.
Every book in this series just captures me and I just have to read it all in one go. This one no different. Thank you for a wonderful fantasy world in which i can hide in when every i need to.
I’ve always been intrigued by Caeco since I first met her, and I absolutely loved being able to get into her psyche a bit. I understand several things much better now, having gotten to know her better. I can’t wait for more!!!
Because of some of Caeco’s actions, choices, and statements in other books in this series, I was not super enthusiastic about this book. But I love the series so I read it anyway. And I am glad that I did. I really enjoyed Caeco’s story and now I am more sympathetic to her journey. It is always fun and exciting to visit the Demon Accords world, each book in the series is engaging, the storylines are fresh, and the overall story arc is advanced. This book focuses on Caeco’s work with the FBI, specifically tracking down a possible Vorsook infiltrator. This is the 15th book in the urban fantasy Demon Accord series. In this book we get to experience the world through Caeco’s eyes. Despite being genetically engineered, it was good to see that she still struggles with life and emotions like normal humans which makes her a more relatable and likeable hero. The minor story arcs continue in addition to the main storyline. Some of the characters from the other books are present in this book as well. The story includes what you’d expect from this genre - fighting, dangerous situations, end of the world scenarios, paranormal creatures, evil masterminds, henchmen, loyal friends and family, tragic back stories, mystical coincidences, snark, and laughs. I will definitely keep reading the series to see what evil beings and plans are thwarted next by Caeco, Chris, Tanya, Declan, Stacia and the rest of the crew.
It's too easy to write about a 6 million dollar man, oh woman. Enhanced human is already set in our world near future, even though she has tech that humanity will probably have alot of learning pains before we can attain something like Caeco. The only interesting parts for me were when Declan and company intervened at precisely that right moments.
We did get to read more about the Vorsook though and learn more about them, but the only concern I had was when Declan was hurt. And since he and Omega are key to fighting the aliens (who are described as "the Grey's") then concern was correct.
This book is a good read but it's too much about plain old humans and this is not why I chose to read "The Demon Accords" series. This book is like a side note, similar to when Declan, Caeco and Toni were written in, like an intermission from the main story.
So read it if you like reading the whole series as it gives your brain other characters to read about and a break from reading about beings with incalculable levels of power ie Chris, Tanya and Declan.
An entertaining read overall. This installment appears to be to rehab Caeco in the eyes of the readers and reintroduce her as a minor character for the next installment (which I am currently reading).
Something that is getting very old in all of these books is that almost all the characters ONLY talk about Declan, constantly emphasising to one another how powerful he is and potentially dangerous. We get it! We are now officially tired of Declan Stu! Don't the other characters have any other thoughts in their heads?
The other annoying thing is that everyone keeps calling Declan a 'kid'. He is an adult, in his early 20s. It is super weird. Even Caeco, who is the same age as him, calls him a 'punk kid' at one point. A strangely archaic phrase for one so young and a weird perspective. (Is she Dirty Harry?)
I hope the Vorsook (sp?) invasion happens soon in the next books to develop the story and characters as they seem to have come to a standstill.
It's time for a book from Caeco's perspective. I have to say she is my least favoirte character, and I really don't understand what happened with her and Declan, not even after reading this book, but at least it tried to explain a little, from her point of view. I think that what the author was trying to show is that she is very different from the rest of the team, and it's not really fair to judge her like a normal person, she grew up in a lab after all. The book not only gave us a better understanding on Caeco, but also the government, since she is working for them. We see just how complicated it is, and how at the end of the day, everyone is out for themselves. She is in a way very naive, and yet she understands a lot. I feel good about her life being better, even if I still don't like her, and I also like how some pieces of the puzzle fell into place. We mostly see how the alien threat is still alive and present, and how everyone is at risk.
This was interesting to have Caeco's POV after an extended period without too much from her. It was good to see that she seems to be settling into the FBI - especially with a new (previous intro thru Oracle) boss. Now, the boss's boss was an ass - just saying. I was wondering why she is still having some of the integration issues she has. There was a comment made about how she didn't understand social cues. It's been quite a while at this time, 5 years maybe, since she has been out of the lab environment. I get the impression there have been improvements but for such a "super soldier" with eidetic level memory nanites you would think things like that wouldn't have taken so long. Just my thoughts. A few chunks of scenes with Declan and Stacia. Plenty with Omega. Scenes with the President seemed more than a stretch, but that's how the series rolls!
I read tons of Urban Fantasy, and one of my favorite elements is how the author decides on the interaction of modern people and technology with the supernatural. This series brings the relationship of supernaturals and modern tech to a whole new level! How deep the story goes with science, government, and real human emotions and interaction with the supernatural world. By far, John Conroe relates the most realistic approach of any author I've read! And, the plot lines are so superb, I can't put this book down! Amazingly real characters, nonstop unpredictable plot twists, emotional growth, superbly written dialogue, and a fallible MC you want to route for! In fact, the only negative of this series is how it has effected my sleep! I;m up all night reading these nonstop pager turners! Thank you John, you master word-smith!
I just read the last book in this series blood cull and the ending was the worst ending to a book I have ever read. I can't words to explain it. Nothing was solved and there was NO resolution to all the big problems they faced. It ended in the middle of the story. I just don't get it. How could the author do that to his readers. Unless there is going to be another book but There is no mentioned anywhere that will be the case. It makes me feel like I do not want To read any more books by this author. If this is how he leaves his readers hanging. I'm actually very angry and feel ripped off. I still hope that the author will write a book 19Because the story just was so open ended and unsatisfying
An interesting book - mostly as it provides more insights in side characters or how the world works without a main character present. That being said, I could have done with a couple of extra chapters in the main series as CAECO simply isn’t a character Im interested in. There were times I liked her and hated her. After that weird interaction with Declan in Winterfall I am sure she is a massive bitch. An opinion that didn’t really change in this book, but I can understand that she acts that way because she is mostly insecure and emotionally scared. In the end I don’t really care about her. She is the girl who is Declans ex - thats her most defining characteristic. Didn’t really need a book about her.
I will admit that I was not a Caeco fan. After this book, my opinion changed. Caeco in the previous book was a young damaged teen trying to survive in a normal world. I judged her a little too harshly. This book allows you see Caeco in a new light. I am impressed with her growth and her insights. I believe she will continue to grow and will be even more likeable. Good book, even though I had reservations about a Caeco centered book. Just goes to show the greatness of the author when you can change someone's view of a character without drastic changes to the character.
I didn't really like caeco before, although I didn't hate the character as some have said in these reviews. Now I understand her characters much better. I couldn't imagine myself being able to survive her upbringing and yet, to become such a caring person. She has a strong desire to be loved even liked and accepted. But she is ultimately a protector of right against wrong and all those who fight for what is right. The thing I think those who've said they don't like Caeco forget is that ultimately she's still a kid in many ways. So Read This Book If You Disliked Caeco because It Will Change Your Mind.
