An easy to read summary of the Battle of Gettysburg, with large print and lots of illustrations make this a good book for early to mid-level elementary students.
Theme: What happened during the Battle of Gettysburg.
Curricular uses: The book would be useful to use as a resource guide for you or students. Also, if a student is very interested in the Civil War they could ready during independent reading.
Reading Level: Fluent
Illustrations: There is at least one picture for every two pages. The pictures are actual pictures or maps for the battle and that time period. They would not be useful for readers to figure out the story.
Literary Elements:Facts
Thoughts: As a teacher I would not read this book aloud entirely. But the book would be useful when talking about the Civil war or for a student interested in history.
I have read several of the We the People non-fiction series with my daughter for U.S. History. The series is very well done with clear photographs, maps, a glossary, timeline and additional interesting information in the afterward. Usually I would say they are perfect for any elementary/middle school classroom or library. This one however was not written well and unless students already have a good understanding of the Civil War they will not benefit much from this read.
Very educational book, that I've used in many of my substitute teaching days. It really peak some students interest and they further researched the topic. Excellent book! Thank you Franklin Public Library for the loan.
This is another book in the We The People series. It examines each day of the battle, and it includes a lot of photos and drawings, along with a glossary, extra facts, important dates, important people, and additional sources of information. The book is for younger readers and is well done.
Illustrations are nicely paced, clearly drawn. The accompanying map, cast of characters and intro will make this an intriguing intro to CW studies, etc.
