What was it really like to be at sea in the Navy with Nelson? Were that sailors excited about the Battle of Trafalgar, or suffering scurvy? How did life compare between those of a high rank, and those who served them? What were conditions like below the decks, living among the rats and the filth? How did you cope if you suffered from sea sickness? This book takes you back in time to see, hear, smell and taste what life was really like for these brave sailors at sea.
The little 90-100 page books in this series from an English publisher are quick, interesting reads -- if you can buy them on remainder as I did (Daedalus Books) for a couple of dollars. Others I've read recently include Life in an English Coffee House and Life in a Tudor Palace.
A handy guide to organisational and social aspects of Nelson's navy. However, as a sailor and avid reader of O'Brian, Kent and many other nautical writers, I was pleasantly surprised at the depth of knowledge already possessed.
