When Caitlin's dad rescues Queenie the hen from drowning, Queenie decides to return the favor in a most surprising way. Every morning she walks all the way from the farm to Caitlin's house to lay an egg in Caitlin's dog's bed. But when Mom has a new baby, Caitlin forgets to collect the eggs, and the dog snuggles in on top of them. Suddenly there are even more additions to their happy group! Bob Graham's warm and unusual tale of a family, a dog, and a hen who feel very much at home together will delight families of all kinds.

A family rescues Queenie the hen from a near-drowning episode in the pond. They spend a few days nursing her back to health before returning her to the farm from which they suspect she escaped. Queenie makes the journey back to their house each day to lay an egg (in the dog's bed, no less), which the family collects. Queenie manages to lay an entire clutch of eggs while the family is distracted with the birth of a new baby, and the family dog accidentally incubates the eggs. The chicks hatch out and are taken back to the farm, except for one, who moves in with the family.
I have really enjoyed most of Bob Graham's books. I also really like chicken stories. So this is a winner on two counts!
