This book is a hidden gem.

When I started reading this, I was surprised at how clean and well the writing flowed. There were barley any grammatical mistakes, which is rare in e-books. I didn’t expect much from the novel since the past couple of e-books I’ve been reading have been in the 2-3 star range, but this definitely exceeded my expectations.

I requested this as soon as I read the premise of the novel on LibraryThing. It was much shorter than the Goodreads synopsis, but it captured my attention. The story is about a girl who works in a nightclub to pay off her tuition, and one night she meets a handsome stranger there while trying to escape a man who keeps following her around. Yes, I know how that sounds: cliché, overdone, boring. That’s what I thought too, but as I continued on with the book, it got so much better.

Not only were the characters crafted and written well, but broke molds and stereotypes. This book was really good and engaging as well. I COULDN’T stop reading, which is always a good sign, except when it’s 12 in the morning and you’re left staring at your screen, wishing for a sequel, which was literally me after finishing this book.

I did have some problems with the novel, the mc’s first encounter with Michael left a sour taste in my mouth. But I literally have nothing else to complain about, WHAT HAS THIS BOOK DONE TO ME? The concept of this story was really good, and even though I’ve read books like this in the past, this is by far the best.

Also, a guy from Italy whose actually written like a normal human being (well, technically as normal as Cardinalis get) and not mafioso? WHAT EVEN, THANK YOU AUTHOR. I feel like every book with Italians in it always depicts them as mafiosi and it really bothers me.

I really can’t comprehend why this isn’t more popular? It’s probably one of the best paranormal romance novel I’ve read so far, and this book deserves so much more love. I definitely reccomend checking this out if you’re looking for a romance novel with fleshed-out characters, vampires (or rather, Cardinalis), engaging plot, and a potential new book boyfriend.

Thank you to LibraryThing for my free copy. This is no way affected my opinion of the book.

OMG, I LOVE THIS STORY! The Cardinalis Code is unlike anything I have read in a LONG time. I am a huge fan of the paranormal and vampire stories, but Avery takes this story to a human level. Avery brings the vampires to life in almost a very likable way. I could not put this story down.

Preslie and Michael are the perfect match. Preslie has no idea that vampires exist. When Michael finds himself paying more attention to Preslie she ends up in a lot of danger. So when Preslie is in danger because of him not only does she find out about vampires she also becomes his blood donor.

There is so much information and such a good story. Avery did leave the story open-ended so I am excited to see where she takes us next.

I'd firstly like to thank Avery Sterling and Netgally for the opportunity to read this ARC.

The Cardinal Code is a romantasy that I consumed in less than 24 hours.

The Cardinal Code follows college student Paislee who is struggling to pay her medical and student debt. Her fate entwines with Michael who is in the process of taking over his father's business. Michael and his family have a secret; they are a genetically superior species who age slowly, have advanced healing abilities, and rely on the blood of humans to survive. They also despise the term humans use to describe them; vampire.

The chemistry between the MMC and FMC is impeccable, although the MMC is a bit of a walking red flag at times. Think twilight, except the vampires aren't mopey but are super wealthy and influential a-holes who will only watch you sleep if you consent first.

This was enjoyable enough for me to want to read the sequel!

~ARC REVIEW - I was not paid by the author or publisher for this review ~

First off, thank you Avery Sterling for letting me receive and review this ARC. I had never read a book of yours before, but I am hooked!

This book had me from the dedication - “To the dreamers and the beautifully broken”

I could not put this down, it was so good! The chemistry between our two main characters was amazing and kept me invested. The character development of the MMC was *chefs kiss*. I love a story that progresses with both plot and strong character development - it just makes the reader feel more invested in their story.

I really enjoyed this authors take on vampiric lore - it was different than anything else I’ve read and was a driving factor on why I enjoyed this so much.

I do feel like the ending was a little rushed and I could’ve used more of it. But the cliff hanger at the end left the me wanting more and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Overall, this was a very fun read and I’m looking forward to the next installment!

4.5/5⭐️

The Cardinal Code by Avery Sterling is a vampire romantasy that I could not put down. Sterling’s writing style kept my eyes glued to the pages. From the beginning, I could feel the chemistry between Paislee and Michael. Their relationship continued to progress as well as Michael’s character. I love a good “Touch her and die” MMC. The lore was also an interesting take that felt like a mafia Twilight. I personally would’ve preferred the story be told from first person dual POV over third person. I also felt the ending was rushed and needed to be developed more. This story does leave on a cliffhanger, making me want more. I can’t wait to see where their story goes. Recommend: yes

Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to review this book.

Thank you to Netgalley and Avery Sterling for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I was hooked, this book exceeded all my expectations for all the wrong reasons.
Season 1 Stefan gets to keep the girl, Damon remains evil and hell bent on revenge, all under the governance of Twilight's order. That's it. That's the plot.

Well until you get to the epilogue but that's for next time.

This book was such a fantastic opening for the series! I’m always excited to read about vampires whenever the setting is in modern times. The Cardinal Code fed that need of mine amazingly with the club settings & modern architectural descriptions. Sterling has created a world where Vampires are the elite species AND they’re able to live and work among humans without being noticed. There are a lot of interesting rules to learn - including understanding the benefits of becoming a contracted human to one of these vampires. Throughout this first book we mostly follow Paislee and Michael’s story - separately and then together. With other minor characters thrown in - some who end up playing some big roles in the twisty turning parts!! I loved this from start to finish! There is open door spice, but it is in JUST the right amount! I can’t wait for book 2! I absolutely have to know what happens next!!!

“I’ve literally just finished this book and im so out of words! I’m so happy I got to read this book! I absolutely adored it. I barely slept once I started reading. At first things started so peaceful but then all when out of control the moment Michael Chamberlain and Paislee Sullivan met.

The Cardinalis Code was intense, captivating, breathtaking and so hot and twisted but also funny. The moment Avery was learning the truth about Michael she was supposedly the one freaking out but instead it was Michael!! I laughed so hard until she did freaked out but anyway it was a funny scene and also when he… I promised not spoilers so I can’t share more.

Avery did an excellent job! The writing style kept me hooked and wanting more. The dual POV made everything more perfect! Paislee and Michael’s story was so delightful to read, the constant push and pull. The moment Michael and Paislee met the sparkles were settled. Their connection was beautiful and so special and it all started with the purest blood type.

Michael was so lovely. He was a knight in shining armor in all ways. Protecting, caring and comprehensive perhaps being patient wasn’t his forte but the moment he met Paislee he always protected her.

The Cardinalis Code was a unique and original story. I’m looking forward to Avery next projects. If you love vampires and enemies to lovers trope this book is perfect for you. I highly recommend it!”

Preslie and Michael

Preslie needed a job to make her college payment. Little did she know that the job would change her life in unimaginable ways. Vampires are real. They aren't vampires by name. They aren't what we read about in books and see in movies. And they are....better read to find out what Preslie learns.

Michael has come back to the states at his parent's request. He's been put in charge of the club that his brother thought he would manage. Their sibling rivalry reaches a whole new high. When Michael spots Preslie will their competition endanger her?

The years of family drama and parental favoritism will add to the danger and romance. The world-building is unique, the lovers a perfect example of opposites attracting. There is plenty of steam. A recommendation to all PNR and Vampire fans.

Exciting and sexy new vampire romantasy!

The Cardinal Code is a suspenseful and sexy new vampire romantasy by author Avery Sterling that presents a fresh and intriguing perspective of vampire lore. With its irresistible main characters, slow-burn romance, and fascinating vampire social order, I was hooked until the very final page.

Michael Chamberlain is the cool, collected, wealthy scion of his elite Sicilian cardinalis family now residing on Long Island. He’s preparing to take over ownership of his father’s successful New York City nightclub, Allusion, when he becomes enamored of a new waitress at the club.

Paislee Sullivan is a college student just trying to pick up the pieces of her interrupted life after a terrible accident two years earlier had almost ended it. With huge medical bills hanging over her head, she takes a job as a waitress at the exclusive Allusion nightclub. One night, the unwanted attentions of a persistent and obnoxious customer lead her to grab the first man she sees, pretending he’s the boyfriend she’s waiting on, in hopes his presence will discourage her pest once and for all. Her surprised rescuer turns out to be none other than Michael Chamberlain, the club’s new owner, and the pest is his estranged brother, Esben.

The couple’s attraction to one another is undeniable, and so begins their slow-burning romance, which starts as a contracted business arrangement. They experience several rocky moments as they learn about each other, and Esben continues to target Paislee as a means of getting back at Michael. The back and forth between the two before convincing Paislee to agree to the contract and then what their relationship was going to look like went a little long for me as they rehashed their motives, emotions, and intentions. Their relationship includes some sexy, erotic scenes as well as darker incidents of anger and violence. Readers sensitive to these kinds of depictions should consider this and proceed accordingly, taking into account their tolerance for such scenarios. An author’s note at the beginning of the book accurately and clearly details this.

The concept of the Codex and an all-powerful order to enforce it was intriguing to me as a reader and intimidating to many characters in the book. There are some surprising twists in the plot, not only regarding past events involving the brothers but also the current action. The story concludes with a cliffhanger ending, which absolutely begs for a quick sequel.

I recommend THE CARDINAL CODE to readers of darker, more adult paranormal romance.

This book had me from the start and I couldn't put it down. I love a good vampire story and this one had its own unique twists and details to keep you interested.

The story kicks up from page one and and doesn't stop twisting and building until the end which was great. I love that it captured my attention from the first page and kept me craving more with each chapter. I read this in under 2 days and was surprised at how much I enjoyed the book as so many vampire stories are the same. It was full of mystery, light suspense, tension, steam, possessive MMC vibes and even threw in a few curve balls. The ending had me dying for the next book immediately.

I love the MMC & FMC and the way their story is unraveling. The steam/spice could have been more detailed and drawn out rather than somewhat rushed or veiled in detail. I did feel like I was left a bit wanting there. I wouldn't say there's spice as much as some steam & tension build up in this book. I felt a connection to the main characters and a desire to keep reading more about their encounters and wanting their story to intertwine.

There were several typos and lines where it seemed like the wrong words were used making a sentence a bit confusing so it wouldn't hurt to have had a better full edit grammatically. I felt the writing was mature enough, well thought out, offered a good mix of details and mystery to keep you guessing and wanting more. I enjoyed the twists towards the end that will likely play out further or to completion in the next book. The beginning did feel a bit rushed as you're immediately brought right into the thick of the story, however I feel like the writing and story building was meaty enough that you don't really feel as though you're missing out on back story from the start as it doesn't pertain too much to what's going on here.

Overall I had a lot of fun reading this ARC, was captivated by the story and the characters, enjoyed the writing well enough, and can not wait to read the next book.

Thank you NetGalley and Xpresso Book Tours for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I liked the author’s writing and the story was simple to follow-it’s a really quick read. The concept was also really interesting with what I thought would be more political intrigue and world development, but I unfortunately found this book was not for me. I had a lot of issues with this one and unfortunately did not enjoy it overall.

Really lacking character depth and details to progress the plot forward. I got some whiplash from Paisley changing her mind about how she feels and what she wants. The story was extremely repetitive with her trying to leave and then either Michael going to get her or her coming back on her own. I couldn’t handle it anymore.

Their entire relationship (if you can call it that?) was not for me. **Spoilers ahead to explain** First, how they started was Paisley going up to Michael, who is a total stranger to her, and kisses him–after she is freaking out by being pursued by a guy at the club she is working at. She’s freaking out about a man touching her without permission (of course, yes, good, as you should be), yet she’s totally cool with going to kiss another man who is a complete stranger and hopes he’s going to help her out of this situation? Girl what?! I did not understand the relationship between Paisley and Michael, it was cringy with all the back and forth between the two of them.

The interactions throughout the story felt like they were always missing something. I’m confused why Michael was obsessed with Paisley in the first place, I’m confused about her accident, I’m confused about blood types and what they mean, and I’m confused about the whole cardinalis world/dynamics. I understand leaving the audience with unanswered questions to set them up for another book in the series, but I feel like I read this whole story and still have barely any information.

This was a good book and I am looking forward to more as it both finishes yet at the same time it does leave you with a little bit of a cliff-hanger so I’m not sure what the other has planned.

I really liked Paislee and I felt horrible for what she went through at the beginning of the book. Paislee knew that she didn’t want to settle for less than what she deserved and held onto those morals to get her through. I thought it was funny with everything that happened between the first kiss between Paislee and Michael although Paislee would have no idea how much danger she placed herself in by her actions.

Michael was a great character as he was obviously very upset over past events with his half-brother Esben which was why he had been gone for so long. His relationship with his dad was also interesting as his dad trusted him more than Esben yet never punished Esben for events in the past, except financially which created more resentment for Esben.

I liked the chemistry between Michael and Paislee and how it grew to be so much more. Yet everything still had to be controlled by The Cardinalis Code which Michael adhered to the best he could. I was absolutely shocked when certain things came up and why. I truly couldn’t understand how everything happened and I was so mad!!

The big fight towards the end was huge and I was so grateful that Seth got there in time but I was really confused by the actions of both Alaitz, Michael’s mom, and Paislee’s doctor regarding her blood. Things were definitely up in the air which makes me believe that more is coming!

The Cardinal Code by Avery Sterling is a paranormal romance book about vampires, my favorite paranormal read y'all! I love the codex cardinals in the beginning that the author created. I loved the beginning chapter of the book where Paislee our MC is finding out that her boyfriend betrayed her and then she gets into an accident because of him. That was a compelling way to grab your reader in the first pages. This book was an excellent read overall. I loved Paislee as a character and how she overcame her injury to work at club Allusion to pay for her bills. The readers also get to meet Michael who is our other MC and has been out of the spotlight for a few years now. Paislee and Michael finally meet and Paislee does not know that Michael is a vampire who is in need of blood. If you like a slow burn romance you will like this book, it takes a while for Michael to figure out about Paislee and vice versa. I love the moment between Paislee and Michael, “How far did you think you'd get in bunny slippers?” LOL that whole scene was hilarious and also so perfect for them. I loved the character of Michael who is a definite book boyfriend btw. The ending is perfect for Michael and Paislee, but opens up more of the story for another book, which I would read in a heartbeat!

From the very first page, I was utterly captivated, drawn into a world that hummed with a familiar yet fresh supernatural energy. If you, like me, found yourself lost in the atmospheric romance and underlying mystery of the "Twilight" saga, then prepare to be swept away once more. "The Cardinal Code" delivers that same addictive blend of compelling characters, a touch of the forbidden, and an undeniable emotional pull.
Sterling masterfully crafts a narrative that kept me on the edge of my seat. The pacing is impeccable, revealing just enough to keep the intrigue simmering without ever feeling rushed. The central relationship, fraught with unspoken desires and seemingly insurmountable obstacles, resonated deeply. There's a palpable tension in their interactions, a magnetic force that made me root for them against all odds. The "Twilight vibes" are definitely present – that sense of a unique and powerful connection blooming in an extraordinary circumstance – but Sterling carves out her own distinct and compelling story within this beloved trope.
Beyond the captivating romance, the underlying mythology and world-building are intriguing. Sterling hints at a larger, more complex world just beneath the surface, leaving me eager to uncover its secrets in future installments.

ARC provided by NetGalley for review~ After reading what this was about I was excited to get a copy for review. I was hooked pretty quickly into this vampire romance and actually finished it in one day. Paislee was sassy and all in on a situationship that was clearly terrible from the start and I felt that. Michael was rich and controlling (shocker) and honestly I did not like him until about 75% in because he was a tool. My heart broke for Paislee on multiple occasions especially when Michael would keep telling her to let things go vs sticking up for her. He seemed to come around but we’ll see as the next book comes out, which since this ends on a cliffhanger I’ll be anxiously waiting for. The only thing keeping this from being a 5 star for me was I felt like there was a bit of a lack of character description. Like I didn’t have a great picture of any of the characters and that’s difficult for me when I’m reading. Also some of the dialogue was a bit B movie cheesy at points but overall the story was so good it was easy to overlook. Definitely invested and looking forward to next one to see where Paislee and Michael’s story will lead.

This is Avery Sterling’s debut book. This book was an interesting read. Paislee is getting ready to attend college. She has a job and a place to stay. Everything changes for her when she starts her new job. She works at a night club as a waitress. This guy gives her the creeps so she goes up to her boss, Michael and kisses him. He plays along. Too bad she had no idea how this would completely change her life. Her boss is a vampire and he needs a new donateur to feed from. Too bad he and his brother both want the same girl and they have never seen eye to eye. Paislee is more than just a donateur to Michael. She is his true mate. His brother will stop at nothing to get even or what he feels is even with his brother. There is more than just sibling rivalry going on as well. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it. I look forward to reading more about these characters in the future. Great job Avery.

Dark, seductive, and surprisingly deep.

The Cardinal Code delivers a gripping blend of paranormal intrigue and forbidden romance. The world-building is immersive—vampires hiding in plain sight, bound by ancient laws and contracts, adds a fresh twist to a well-worn trope. Michael is the perfect brooding anti-hero, while Paislee brings heart and determination to balance the darker elements of the story.

Their chemistry crackles from the moment they meet, and the slow burn tension kept me turning the pages. I appreciated the exploration of consent and power dynamics—it added layers to the romance and made the stakes feel real.

That said, some pacing issues and occasional predictability kept it from being a full 5 stars. Still, it’s a strong start to what could be a very compelling series. If you love your romance with danger, secrets, and a bite of the supernatural, The Cardinal Code is well worth sinking your teeth into.

I would first like to thank BookSirens and Avery Sterling for an eARC for an honest review.

Rating : 3.5 stars

Where to start!

The concept behind this book really made me excited to read and although I didn’t give this 5 stars, I did enjoy this book.

I love vampire books (ever since my twilight years), I enjoyed the world this was set in and the whole idea behind the rules, order of the vampires, blood contract, which even though may be done similar in other books, I really thoroughly loved. THE CLIFFHANGER!!!!

However, for me personally, I didn’t really feel the connection between the main characters. It felt quite insta-love (or lust at least) and when one of the characters said they’d fallen in love at like 70% the way through and I didn’t really understand why - I don’t think they had many meaningful conversations at that point, it was just lust, feed, jealous, argue, lust.

That being said, just because that kind of trope isn’t my thing doesn’t mean it should out anyone off. If this that is your thing or if you fancy reading a book that does have really a interesting world then please give this book a read.

Thank you again to the team for the eARC.

The Cardinal Code by Avery Sterling was a great vampire book. I really believe there was a different take on vampire and humans. I like the concept that they could still eat, and there was more of an order being a vampire.

Michael and Paislee's relationship was perfection! They had an instant attraction, but I liked how Paislee didn't fall at his feet. There were some twists and turns in the book that kept you on your toes while reading. But boy, was I mad to learn it kind of ends in a cliffhanger! I can't wait for the next book to come out!

Thank you so much Net Galley for the advanced copy of The Cardinal Code!

Unfortunately, this book didn’t quite hit the mark for me. It felt as though the author was rushing through the narrative, skimming over key moments that could have added much-needed depth to both the storyline and the characters. There were so many opportunities to flesh things out, to build tension, atmosphere, and emotional connection—but instead, it all felt a bit superficial.

The writing itself isn’t bad—it’s clear and readable—but it stays very much on the surface, never really diving deep enough to fully engage or immerse the reader. And that’s the real disappointment here, because the concept holds so much potential. A vampire story with a fresh angle is always exciting, but in this case, the execution just didn’t live up to the promise. I really wanted to love this one, but it left me wanting more in all the wrong ways.

This is a new author to me and I love PNR so I decided to give this book a try. I was pleasantly surprised by the writing style and the author kept me engaged throughout. Paislee is a college student just trying to fund her education. Michael is the club owner and in need of a new contract donor. Will they come to some sort of agreement? When feelings get involved well they both make it out of unscathed?

5 STARS IS NOT ENOUGH FOR THIS BOOK. I absolutely loved it, the characters, the plot, the pace, the spice, top tier. I could not put it down, I love an overly possessive and protective mmc and Michael is def worth drooling over. The end had me sitting on the edge of my seat and I need the next one like now because I need to know what happens.

Really good, until the heroine does something stupid. I hate when the heroine does something stupid-- trying to save or spare someone and only puts herself in danger! Thankfully it all works out, but my BP may never recover.

Four stars for me! This was a fun, fast-paced read. I loved Paislee’s wit and how real she felt as a character. As for Michael, I’m always a fan of a broody vampire! I think this was a well written, and I’m absolutely intrigued by the politics behind the scenes. I look forward to the next book to see how the characters and story line progress!

I devoured this book in a single day! Avery Sterling masterfully weaves complex characters into a vivid, real-time world, one filled with hidden threats and shadowy figures we may never realize exist. But our fiery female main character is about to learn the truth.

What choice will she make to survive in their world? And now that she knows the truth, what new dangers surround her?

This high-stakes, slow-burn, suspenseful vampire romance grips you from the very beginning and doesn’t let go. I’m already eagerly awaiting the next installment.

Huge thanks to NetGalley and Avery Sterling for the opportunity to read and review this captivating book!

This book started a bit rough around the edges, making the beginning hard to follow at first. However, I found myself drawn into the hot-and-cold relationship building, which gave me enjoyable adult Twilight vibes—a fitting dynamic for a long-lived "vampire". One scene that truly stole my heart was with the "hamster" (IYKYK); it was so adorable and wonderfully down-to-earth.
The last half of the book flowed much better, and I could really feel the author's excitement as her vision came to life.
I got to read an advaced copy of this book for free and I'm leaving this review voluntarily. I'm honestly looking forward to the next book and can't wait to read it, even knowing it's going to be a long wait!

Think “Twilight” with a trust fund and actual danger, where sleeping beside a vampire comes with legal paperwork and emotional baggage.

Michael Chamberlain all cold charm and carefully leashed menace.
He’s a great morally gray MMC, powerful, and emotionally unavailable in all the best ways.
Paislee, our smart but struggling heroine, just naive enough to get swept into this shadowy world without losing herself completely.

Their chemistry? Absolutely electric. I love a good slow burn, “touch her and die” trope.

The pacing seems rushed at the ending though.

This is a honest review in exchange for an ARC copy of this book. Thank you Avery Sterling, and NetGalley for letting me read this book!

Avery Sterling's The Cardinal Code presents an engaging concept and a gripping plot that keeps the reader invested. The storyline transports the reader into a world of vampires and secret governments that most humans are unaware of until they accidentally become entangled in its web. The characters are easy to connect with, their emotions and dilemmas resonating throughout the book. However, their development could have been deeper. At times, they felt more like vehicles for the plot rather than fully fleshed-out individuals.

Sterling's writing style, while immersive, sometimes relies too heavily on repetitive adjectives and familiar descriptions, which can pull the reader out of the experience. A fresher, more varied narrative voice as well as further proofreading and editing could have enhanced the storytelling even more.
