With everyone being so grumpy and gloomy all the time, Grumpy Land was aptly named to reflect the royal family and its subjects within the realm, but when Prince Grumpy the Sixth was born and suddenly started smiling, things quickly changed for the better!
Een glimlach is het mooiste wat je kan dragen. Maar wat gebeurt er als men vergeet hoe een glimlach er uit ziet? Dit is wat gebeurt in het land van Koning Somberman : Somberland. Daar is iedereen vergeten hoe men moet glimlachen.
In the land of Grumpy Town everyone had forgotten how to smile. This was a normal way of life, that is until the sixth son of the king and queen was born. Read along and marvel at how Prince Grumpy the 6th transformed the town of Grumpy Land for future generations.
King Grumpy, the royal family, and the citizens of Grumpy Town never smile - they are permanently frowny. So, when Prince Grumpy the 6th is born with an unfamiliar expression on his face, everyone is thrown into a tizzy trying to discover what is wrong with him. After multiple misdiagnoses, the King tries on the same expression and finds that he likes it. Soon everyone is smiling along with the young prince. Funny and a bit off-beat, though, labeling (even commenting on) people's facial expressions is kind of a hands-off topic these days.
Well, that was what I was expecting, but then not quite what I was expecting. I knew it would be a prince who smiled when no one else would. And I figured everyone would be OK. I certainly didn't expect the ending, and the tacked on way of it may lose its humor with kids. The pictures are kinda cute. It is a shame it got really wordy in the middle or it might have worked in storytime. It still could, but I don't know. Will consider.
SMILE by John A. Rowe, told as a fable, is a fresh, humorous way of expressing how much better it feels to smile and be happy, than be grumpy all the time. Definitely some that will make young and older readers, alike, well---SMILE! :D
Cute book. A little wordy, but great overall. Sparked our imaginations to create our own royal names. I dub the Prince Goofball the First. We read this on August 13th.
