With her kingdom surrounded by enemies on all sides, the Blood Queen Neferata must call upon all of her cunning and guile if she is to maintain her rulership… fortunately, those qualities are not in short supply…
READ IT BECAUSE Explore the terrifying wiles of the Mortarch of Blood in a novel that pushes her to her limits as enemies gather both within and without her undying empire.
THE STORY Neferata is besieged. To the east, the daemon prince Graunos gathers the legions of the Blood God, seeking to tear the Mortarch from her throne. To the south, Sigmar’s storm heralds the coming of the Anvils of the Heldenhammer, intent on pressing the God-King’s claim. All the while, an ancient enemy grows, hidden within Neferata’s lands. Never has her power seemed so fragile. But, within the dominion of bones, the Mortarch of Blood controls all, and even the champions of the Dark Gods will find themselves puppets in her schemes.
Full disclosure. Did not finish reading this one. I tried, I really did. but it was so bad. It's Emo fiction, like goth fiction written by a 13 year old. The prologue is just overly gothing description of the area, every third word is blood or darkness or death or shadow. It got a little better when it started going into the characters but then Neferata herself showed up and anytime anyone says anything she has a inner monologue laugh at how they are all her pawns. every other line is just, "oh how you all dance like my puppets." Unreadable.
Good book, Neferata is always a blast to read about. David Annandale manages to even make the fighting interesting which I find rare among warhammer novels. My only grievance with the book was that the end felt a bit abrupt and mumbo jumbo, like he ran out of pages and had to end it fast and didn't have time to think up the plot. It's Age of Sigmar after all so you have to expect a certain amount of fantasy nonsense, but this one felt like it was to the detriment of the story. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
I have two ratings: 4 stars for the story, the author wrote a very entertaining book. The other rating is one star for the audible version. The lady who narrates it (Emma Gregory) attempts to change her voice deeper for demons and other masculine entities. It's very jarring and takes away from the experience and just doesn't work at all. But, getting back to the story, Neferata is a very cool character and is written very well. Well worth a few afternoon readings!
It's a novelty for me to see Khornate lords act with such competent strategy and consideration. They direct their rage in a fashion that benefits them most. Seeing Neferata be surprised by a development is always enjoyable, as she usually has everything planned in advance. The figure of her surprise goads her curiosity and potentially a fond semi-attachment.
A fun book that expertly illustrates why the title character is one of the Age of Sigmar’s most fascinating anti-heroes. It’s an awesome blend of fantasy and horror with some fantastic action set pieces
This was an epic and entertaining read about, basically, how bad ass Nerferata is. She is a master planner, manipulator, sorceress and warrior. Chaos threatens her realm so she uses all her wits and resources, and Stormcast Eternals, to wage war on them. Some of the rules of magic are difficult to follow but then, again, it’s magic. Also, a major plot line from a previous work is addressed.
Fun read. Its nearly cathartic how some of the main characters plans play out. While Neferata is undoubtedly awesome she doesn't feel invulnerable. I enjoyed the previous Neferata book and enjoyed the continuation of certain threads. I hope we get some more novels about her from Annandale.
