As 1939 Europe spirals into war, the lives of Olivia, Jack and Charlie will never be the same again.
The Restless Sea is an absolute epic of a read. Each time I thought Vanessa de Haan couldn’t possibly take the reader any further, the plot went hurtling off again so that reading The Restless Sea was akin to being on one of Jack’s convoy ships in the broiling ocean, sailing the highs and lows of every wave. Certainly there are coincidences that may stretch the reader’s belief at times but they had no detrimental effect on my absolute enjoyment of this novel and I loved the way it was plotted and resolved because it truly was a real roller coaster of a read.
What I so enjoyed was the gritty realism of Vanessa de Haan’s depiction of the war. I was thoroughly entertained by the narrative but incredibly educated too. In fact, at times, her presentation of the harshness Charlie and Jack endure was almost too great to bear. I had to give myself small breathers and breaks in my reading because it felt too intense a read simply to race through the fast paced story. Vanessa de Haan has the ability to transport a reader through her magnificent and frequently poetic descriptions – whether they want to go on the journey or not. I found some of the conditions, especially with regard to the weather and the Arctic runs, almost too hard to bear so that I was experiencing the same things as the characters. The descriptions of nature, the elements and living conditions were incredibly convincing and frequently quite disturbing. This is such powerful writing.
What I think works so well for The Restless Sea is the contrast between the sweeping historical aspects and the relatively small number of characters whom we get to know so well and intimately. I felt a profound sadness reading about Jack in particular so that I feel as if I understood his experiences, and therefore those of the real people of the era, far more acutely than perhaps I have before. Yes, there is romance and light amongst the shade in The Restless Sea, but this is no glamorised and sanitised version of events, making for a moving, captivating and fulfilling read that I think would suit many different readers.
I genuinely found myself thinking about the book when I wasn’t reading it, wondering how Olivia, Jack and Charlie were progressing without me. I thought The Restless Sea was an evocative and enthralling read and I know it’ll be lurking in my head for a very long time. I really recommend it.

Η πρωτοεμφανιζόμενη συγγραφέας Vanessa De Haan κατόρθωσε να προκαλέσει μεγάλη αίσθηση με το πρώτο της κιόλας βιβλίο, στο οποίο, μάλιστα, καταπιάστηκε με ένα θέμα που φέρει μαζί του πολλές δυσκολίες. Πρώτα απ' όλα, δεν είναι ιδιαίτερα πρωτότυπο, καθώς τα τελευταία χρόνια έχουν κυκλοφορήσει δεκάδες βιβλία με φόντο τον Β' Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο, άρα είχε να πολεμήσει μεγαθήρια, προκειμένου να μπορέσει να προσφέρει αυτό το "κάτι" που θα έκανε το δικό της έργο να ξεχωρίζει. Σε δεύτερο επίπεδο, ένα ιστορικό βιβλίο ποτέ δεν είναι εύκολη υπόθεση αφού, εκτός από καλή διάθεση ή μυθιστορηματική έμπνευση, πρέπει να διαθέτει και τις απαραίτητες γνώσεις προκειμένου να μην είναι εκτός κλίματος και αισθήματος της εποχής. Οπότε, για κάθε συγγραφέα, όλο αυτό αποτελεί ένα μεγάλο στοίχημα, με την De Haan να φαίνεται να το κερδίζει.
Το βιβλίο αποτελείται από τρεις αλληλένδετες ιστορίες. Τις ιστορίες τριών ανθρώπων που εν μέσω του Β' Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου καλούνται να επιβιώσουν, να ωριμάσουν, να ενηλικιωθούν και πάνω απ' όλα, να μην χάσουν τον εαυτό τους και την ανθρωπιά τους. Τρεις ζωές διαφορετικές, με την κάθε μία από αυτές να διακρίνεται από τα δικά της βάσανα, από τις δικές τις στιγμές, άλλοτε άγριες και βίαιες, άλλοτε πάλι γεμάτες συμπόνοια, αγάπη και ελπίδα. Τρεις ζωές που εναλλάσσονται σε κάθε κεφάλαιο,και που παρά τις διαφορές τους εμπλέκονται η μία με την άλλη, σχεδόν αδιάκοπα, συνδέονται με τρόπους που δεν φανταζόμαστε και, τελικά, αυτό βοηθάει όχι μόνο στην ομοιογένεια και στη ροή της αφήγησης, μα και στο να δεθούμε, ίσως και να ταυτιστούμε, με τον κάθε χαρακτήρα και την προσωπική του πορεία, χωριστά, μα εξίσου δυνατά. και πώς λέγονται όλες οι διαφορετικές ζωές σε κάθε κεφάλαιο.

Η εναλλαγή της αφήγησης ανάμεσα στις ιστορίες των τριών αυτών ανθρώπων γίνεται με τρόπο ομαλό και απόλυτα φυσικό, με την ροή να διατηρεί την ισορροπία και την αρμονία της, πράγμα που επιτρέπει και σε 'μας, ως αναγνώστες, να μην χάνουμε τον ειρμό μας, να μην αποκοπτόμαστε συναισθηματικά, ενώ παράλληλα δεν σπάει η όποια ένταση έχει δημιουργηθεί.
Το ιστορικό περιεχόμενο του βιβλίου είναι εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρον, όχι μόνο εξαιτίας του τρόπου που το έχει προσεγγίσει η συγγραφέας, η οποία φαίνεται πως έχει πραγματοποιήσει σχολαστική έρευνα προκειμένου να συγκεντρώσει τα απαραίτητα στοιχεία, αλλά και εξαιτίας του τρόπου που τα έχει αποδώσει όλα αυτά στο σύνολο της αφήγησής της. Ωστόσο, στο σημείο αυτό, πρέπει να αναφέρουμε πως ορισμένες περιγραφές του βιβλίου ίσως να είναι περισσότερο σκληρές και γραφικές απ' όσο μπορεί ν' αντέξει κανείς, οπότε καλό θα ήταν να είναι προετοιμασμένος -κυρίως, επειδή μέσα από τις ωμές αυτές περιγραφές, αποτυπώνεται η σκληρή αλήθεια του τότε που σημάδεψε γενιές και γενιές ανθρώπων που έζησαν τη φρίκη οι ίδιοι, ή μέσα από τις εξιστορήσεις των οικείων τους.
Συνολικά, λοιπόν, έχουμε να κάνουμε με ένα καθαρόαιμο ιστορικό βιβλίο, που παντρεύει την Ιστορία με την μυθιστορία, και που μέσα από το οποίο αποτυπώνεται η αλήθεια μιας ολόκληρης εποχής, μα και μιας ολόκληρης γενιάς. Η αλήθεια η ιστορική, η κοινωνική, η προσωπική, η ανθρώπινη, που όσο κι αν συγκρούεται η μία με την άλλη, στην πραγματικότητα, διαθέτουν κοινό παρανομαστή. Και μπορεί να υπάρχουν στιγμές που η αφήγηση γίνεται εξαιρετικά σκληρή, υπάρχουν, όμως, και κάποιες άλλες μέσα από τις οποίες αποτυπώνεται όλη η ευαισθησία που τείνουμε να ξεχνάμε πως μπορεί να υπάρξει κάτω από τέτοιες συνθήκες. Τέλος, θα ήθελα ν' αναφέρω πως το βιβλίο αυτό αποτελεί ουσιαστικά έναν φόρο τιμής της συγγραφέως, απέναντι στους συγγενείς της εκείνους οι ιστορίες των οποίων την ενέπνευσαν, έτσι ώστε το έργο της να βρίσκεται σήμερα στα χέρια μας. Και αν μη τι άλλο, κάθε μυθιστόρημα που κρύβει μέσα του αλήθειες ανθρώπων που πράγματι υπήρξαν, μας συγκινεί λίγο περισσότερο, πόσο μάλλον όταν αυτό δεν γίνεται με σκοπό την εκμετάλλευση, αλλά την αγάπη και την πίστη στην ανθρώπινη ψυχή.

I won an advanced readers copy of "The Restless Sea" in a Goodreads Giveaway and overall was very happy with this book. I did notice a few errors but it quite clearly stated on the cover that it was an uncorrected proof so I expect these have already been picked up and will be removed from the final edition and therefore it is unnecessary to highlight them in this review. One thing I did feel it necessary to warn the reader about is that some may find a few of the bombing scenes are a bit gruesome/graphic. (I won't go into details at this point in time because I don't like to add a review with spoilers before the book is properly published and it is also not appropriate to quote from an uncorrected proof but they were for me a bit distressing).
I love all the interconnecting storylines and how all the different lives are told in each chapter. They are engaging, well thought out and fit together almost seamlessly. I felt it was interesting watching how each in their own ways has the formative years of their lives shaped and altered by the effects of war. The way the stories interlock also made me feel as though I was able to bond with all the central characters equally whilst still being able to appreciate them individually. I loved Olivia, the strong female character of the book and rooted for both Charlie and Jack. I even felt for the way in which Betsy was dealt with, despite her being one of the more flawed characters within the book. I was pleased that she still managed to find a place for herself in the world after the way she was forced to survive the war.
Some of the sections where Charlie was a POW (prisoner of war) were incredibly powerful and I felt the interactions with the various German characters were very well done. It is rare for a book dealing with the wars to so understandingly and delicately portray the sensibilities of the men on the other side of the conflict. It shows Germans who still demonstrated compassion and morals like any other human beings and showed them as having the same dreams, hopes and fears as the other men. It is refreshing that the book does not try to imprint the idea of them as simply "the enemy" with no human thought or emotion behind them - it's what makes what happens to Charlie even more heartfelt at the end.
The book also deals well with the aspects of social hierarchy that existed before and during the war. There is the issue of Olivia being quite high-born and the attitudes to her turning down someone considered quite a respectable and suitable match (Charlie) for the rough and ready low-born ex-thief (Jack). Then the roles of men and women are also thoroughly explored in that Olivia starts off unable to fend for herself at all and more worried about a lost bracelet than anything else and then progresses to her hunting and fishing to provide food and some income for the house, even filleting her own fish and cutting up the carcasses of the deer she has shot. After this, when society tries to force her back into the typical female mould she rebels and runs off to work as a WREN. The book also does not shy away from other issues like the way women were forced to survive by selling themselves in order to get by or the questions surrounding the results of sexual relations before marriage because so many young men were going off to fight (and die) and there was no time for traditional courtships like in the pre-war days.
I also found the historical note at the end particularly interesting/insightful. It is nice to know the ideas germinated from true life family stories that the author heard growing up. She even pays homage to some of her relatives in the character names she chooses, but also obviously a lot of fact checking and historical research was involved to secure the books authenticity and ensure the events really felt alive/real, even though the characters themselves are entirely fictitious. I was surprised to learn that the Merchant Navy actually lost proportionally more men than any of our armed forces during the Second World War, as I really felt for Jack during the ship convoys to Russia and the Arctic Circle and never truly grasped how dangerous it had been before. I also thought the poems at the beginning and end of the book were a nice touch.
All in all I was sad to finish reading it as I didn't really want it to end. I will definitely be watching out for more from this author and hope she follows up on the characters in a sequel as this first debut novel was great!

An epic war story which follows 3 young characters as their lives are transformed by war. The beautifully vivid descriptions transport you into a moment: detail, colour and mood are captured perfectly, allowing you to feel as though you’re watching scenes unfolding before you.
The book switches between the three characters with ease. Sometimes I find books which jump around difficult to follow, but the author gives you enough to satiate your interest in one thread before moving on to the next.
The historical context made the book an interesting read. The amount of research carried out is impressive and I felt like I leaned a lot about World War 2, especially the merchant navy voyages to Russia via the arctic. The shifts in society happening at the time are interesting to read about as well, with Olivia shaking off the shackles of a Victorian style upbringing and forging a life for herself outside of the expectations of her family and class.
All in all an enjoyable read which kept me lost in the plot until the early hours for several nights!

Ένα πραγματικά ιστορικό μυθιστόρημα με επίκεντρο τον Β Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο όπως τον έζησαν τρία νεαρά άτομα,ο καθένας από τη πλευρά του.
Ο Τσάρλι , πιλότος και ερωτευμένος με την Ολίβια θα προσπαθήσει μέσα από τον πόλεμο και τη μάχη για να σταθεί αντάξιος του πατέρα του που πολέμησε στον Α παγκόσμιο πόλεμο.
Η Ολίβια θα απομονωθεί από την οικογένεια της,σε μια επαρχιακή περιοχή της Σκωτίας μαζί με τη θεία της.Η παραμονή της εκεί θα της αλλάξει την οπτική για τη ζωή και θα την κάνει πιο σκληροτράχηλη.Εκεί θα γνωρίσει και τον Τζακ.

This is historical fiction at it’s best and if you read this book you will see why. Author Vanessa de Haan has written a book that will not only have you flying through the pages, but she will hold you fully engaged in the story. So much so you won't want to put it down. And when you do, it will be because you've arrived at the end of the story and if you are like me you'll be wanting more.

Όσο κι αν πιστεύουμε ότι έχουν γραφτεί τα πάντα για τον Β Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο , πάντα μια ταλαντούχα πένα μπορεί να μας εκπλήξει.
Αυτό πετυχαίνει η Βρετανή Βανέσσα ντε Χάαν με ένα μεστό ιστορικό μυθιστόρημα, την "Άγρια Θάλασσα", όπου θα μας μεταφέρει στιγμές από τη Μάχη της Αγγλίας και τις μάχες του Βρετανικού Ναυτικού στη θάλασσα, μέσα από τρία νεαρά παιδιά που ο πόλεμος τα ρίχνει στα άγρια νερά μιας βίαιης ενηλικίωσης... .
ΠΕΡΙΛΗΨΗ
19369 Τζακ ανδρώνεται στη σκιά του Πολέμου, σαν αλήτης σε μια φτωχοσυνοικία του Λονδίνου.
Ανάμεσα στις εφηβικές συμμορίες και τη μικρή εγκληματικότητα, μονάχα η αθώα αδελφούλα του γίνεται το μοναδικό ανάχωμα ανθρωπιάς στην ψυχή του, ώσπου μια απόφαση τον στρέφει στη θάλασσα.
Οι νηοπομπές θα τον βγάλουν στα νερά της Αρκτικής και στον σκληρό χειμώμα της Ρωσίας με την αδελφούλα του μακρινή ανάμνηση.
Στην άλλη γωνιά της Αγγλίας, ο Τσάρλι ετοιμάζεται για μια ακόμη πτήση κυνηγώντας το όνειρο να γίνει ήρωας της Πολεμικης Αεροπορίας, σχεδιάζοντας το μέλλον του με την αρραβωνιαστικιά του, την καθωσπρέπει Ολίβια.
Η νεαρή Ολίβια ανακαλύπτει τον αγώνα για την επιβίωση όταν αναγκάζεται να εγκαταλείψει το αποστειρωμένο περιβάλλον της αριστοκρατικής της οικογένειας και να αντεπεξέλθει στις νέες πραγματικότητες, που επιβάλλουν ο πόλεμος και η συμβίωση με τη δύστροπη θεία Νάνσυ.
Κι ενόσω τα γερμανικά Meschermitt και τα θορυβώδη Stukas ζώνουν με φλόγες και ουρλιαχατά το Λονδίνο όλα αρχίζουν να ανατρέπονται όταν ο Τζακ θα συναντήσει την Ολίβια, απειλώντας το καλοστημένο πλάνο του Τσάρλι για το μέλλον του...
ΣΧΟΛΙΑΣΜΟΣ
Η "Αγρια Θάλασσα" αποτελεί το συγγραφικό ντεμπούτο της Vanessa de Haan που κλήθηκε να ξεπεράσει δυο υφάλους:
Αφενός ο Β Παγκόσμιος Πόλεμος αποτελει μεν προνομιακό πεδίο (αφού μόνος του υποβάλλει ένταση συναισθημάτων) είναι, όμως, ένα θέμα που κυριαρχεί θεματολογικά την τελευταία 60ετία σε Λογοτεχνία, Κινηματογράφο και Ιστοριογραφία και τείνει να κορεστεί.
Επομένως, απαιτούνται πραγματικά πρωτοτυπες και πολύ δυναμικές εμπνεύσεις για να προσφέρει κανείς κάτι αξιοπρόσεκτο πια.
Ο πήχυς είναι πολύ ανεβασμένος.
Αφ'ετέρου, για ένα άρτιο αποτέλεσμα, απαιτούνται πλέον γνώσεις ιστορικές αλλά και τεχνικές προκειμένου να αναπαρασταθούν στιγμιότυπα των μαχών με εγκυρότητα και ζωντάνια.
Η συγγραφέας κατορθώνει σε έναν μεγάλο βαθμό να υπηρετήσει τις δυο αυτές παραμέτρους και να χαρίσει ένα αρκετά καλό μυθιστόρημα που επιφυλάσσει αρκετές συγκινήσεις και πρόσωπα που αγγίζουν τον αναγνώστη με το δράμα τους.
Δεν ξέρω για τους Εγγλεζους ή τους Αμερικάνους, πάντως, ειδικότερα για τους Έλληνες αναγνώστες "Η Άγρια Θάλασσα" παρουσιάζει ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον, καθώς λίγα π΄ραγματα έχουμε δει για τη Μάχη της Αγγλίας ή τους Βρετανούς αμάχους, αφού στα ελληνόφωνα βιβλία έχουμε εστίαση συνήθως στον αγώνα της Γαλλίας και -δυστυχώς λιγότερο- των Σοβιετικών.
Με μια φράση,λοιπόν, "Η Άγρια Θάλασσα" είναι το οδοιπορικό ενηλικίωσης τριών νεαρών 'Άγγλων μέσα από την τρικυμία του πολέμου.
Η αφήγηση εξελίσσεται γραμμικά, χωρισμένη σε κεφάλαια που εστιάζουν κάθε φορά σε ένα από τους κεντρικούς πρωταγωνιστές ο οποίος στο επόμενο κεφάλαιο παραδίδει τη σκυτάλη της πλοκλης στον επόμενο.Αυτή η εναλλάγή καθιστά πιο ευέλικτη τη ροή.
Το πρώτο ατού του βιβλίου είναι πράγματι οι βασικοί του χαρακτήρες:¨
Ιχνηλατημένοι ικανοποιητικά, καθένας κουβαλάει το ατομικό του φορτίο παλεύοντας με τους δικούς του "δαίμονες".
Όλοι διατηρούν μια αυτόνομη γοητεία και κανείς δεν προβάλλει εξιδανικευμένος.
Ο Τζακ μεγαλώνοντας στο κοινωνικό περιθώριο πασχίζει να αναδυθεί από τον βούρκο και να σώσει από αυτόν και τη μικρή του αδελφή ως καθρέφτη της χαμένης αθωότητάς του...
Ο Τσάρλι αναμετράται με την ιδεατή εικόνα του ήρωα πατέρα του επιβάλλοντας στον εαυτό του το κυνήγι της τελειότητας, μα βλέπει το είδωλο αυτό να τσαλακώνεται βίαια από τις δοκιμασίες των μαχών, την απώλεια και τις αδυναμίες του.
Η Ολίβια εγκαταλείπει την ασφάλεια της αριστοκρατικής καταγωγής και καλείται να προσαρμοστεί στην άγρια φύση και σε μια χειραφέτηση που ζητά η καρδιά της και οι απαιτήσεις των καιρών...
Δίπλα τους ο συγκροτημένος Καρλ, ρρομαντικός Χανς, η αποπροσανατολισμένη, εύθραυστη Μπέτσι, ο καιροσκόπος Στουνγκ, ο Όττο, η εικόνα των χαμένων φίλων να χαμογελούν από μακρυά...
Όλες αυτές οι παράλληλες ζωές καθώς συμπλέκονται συνθέτουν ένα δράμα που γεννά πολλαπλά συναισθήματα και φυσικά αγωνία για την έκβαση και την τύχη όλων τους.
Μέσα από αυτές προβάλλουν ιδανικά όπως η φιλία, οι οικογενειακοί δεσμοί και η αυτοθυσία.
Το άλλο στοιχείο που κερδίζει τις εντυπώσεις είναι σίγουρα οι εκπληκτικές περιγραφές από τη ζωή στο Πολεμικό Ναυτικό,οι νηοπομπές, οι συντροφικές σχέσεις, οι αερομαχίες, ο θάνατος, που καραδοκεί.
Πρώτη φορά εγώ σε μυθιστόρημα κατανοώ τόσο καλά τις συνθήκες σε ένα αεροπλανοφόρο, τις τεχνικές απαιτήσεις και τον σχεδιασμό ενός βομβαρδισμού από την πλευρά του επιτιθέμενου και κάτι από τον υποβρυχιακό πόλεμο.
Η Βανέσσα ντε Χάαν σκιαγραφεί ιδανικά την έξαψη της πτήσης, την αδρεναλίνη της μάχης, τη μοναξιά του ναυαγού, τον σαρκοβόρο πάγο, το αίμα, την εκμηδένιση του ανθρώπου κάτω από τη θηριωδία του πολέμου...
Είναι θεαματικό μια γυναίκα να γνωρίζει σε τόσο βάθος τέτοιες λεπτομέρειες από το σύμπαν των στρατιωτικών και φανερώνει πόσο βαθιά και υπέυθυνα έχει μελετήσει η ντε Χάαν το θέμα της.
Η μόνη αδυναμία που έχω να εντοπίσω είναι μια γενικότερη τάση που νιώθω ότι ενυπάρχει στη βρετανική σχολή για εκτενείς και παραστατικές περιγραφές τοπίων που συχνά είναι υπερβολικά αναλυτικές εις βάρος της πλοκής.
Προς το τέλος υπήρξε μια ανισομέρεια στην εικονοπλασία και στις καθεαυτές εξελίξεις που συμπυκνώθηκαν λίγο.
Είναι όμως μια επουσιώδης επισήμανση πάνω σε ένα εν γένει αρμονικό σύνολο που κατορθώνει να παρασύρει τον αναγνώστη για να τού αφήσει στο τέλος ηχηρό αντιπολεμικό μήνυμα κι εναν βαθιά συγκινητικό απόηχο ανθρωπιάς!
Το συστήνω ανεπιφύλακτα- ειδικά για όσους θέλουν κάτι πέρα από την ελληνοκεντρική σκοπιά του φοβερού αυτού πολέμου, αναζητώντας να ανακαλύψουν ακόμη περισσότερες πτυχές του, πάντα με τον Άνθρωπο στο επίκεντρο.

Η ζωή μας θα μπορούσε κάλλιστα να μοιάζει με την θάλασσα. Όταν επικρατεί ειρήνη,είναι γαλήνια καί ήρεμη,κι όταν εισβάλλει ο πόλεμος φουρτουνιάζει καί γίνεται άγρια. Τότε,εμείς θα πρέπει να καταφέρουμε να ''κολυμπήσουμε'' καί να ανταπεξέλθουμε απέναντι στα πελώρια κύματα που έχουν σηκωθεί κι απειλούν να μας ''πνίξουν''... Η θάλασσα,όπως καί η ζωή,έχει δύο πρόσωπα κι ανάλογα με το τι ''καιρός'' επικρατεί μας δείχνει την ομορφιά,ή,την ασχήμια της...
Είναι γεγονός ότι από την αρχή της χρονιάς φτάνουν στα χέρια μου πολύ δυνατά μυθιστορήματα,εκ των οποίων τα περισσότερα είναι πρωτόλεια δείγματα γραφής,που με εντυπωσιάζουν καί με ξαφνιάζουν πολύ ευχάριστα. Για ένα τέτοιο βιβλίο πρόκειται να σας μιλήσω σήμερα. Ο λόγος για το ιστορικό μυθιστόρημα της συγγραφέως κυρίας Vanessa De Haan,με τίτλο ''Άγρια Θάλασσα''.
Η πλοκή του βιβλίου σχετίζεται με την περίοδο του Β' Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου καί διαδραματίζεται στην Αγγλία της τότε εποχής. Μία ιστορία που κάλλιστα θα μπορούσε να είναι αληθινή,αφού όπως αναφέρει καί η συγγραφέας στο τέλος του βιβλίου,βασίστηκε σε πράγματα που είχε ακούσει για εκείνα τα χρόνια.
Αν καί ιστορικό βιβλίο,η υπόθεσή του είναι περίτεχνη καί πολυεπίπεδη. Καταπιάνεται με πολλά ζητήματα που απασχολούσαν την κοινωνία. Εστιάζει στις οικογενειακές σχέσεις,στην αδερφική αγάπη,στον έρωτα που γεννάται ακόμη καί κάτω από τις πιο αντίξοες συνθήκες,στην ασχήμια του πολέμου καί στην άσβεστη ελπίδα για ένα καλύτερο μέλλον. Για πολλοστή φορά αποδεικνύεται ότι ο πόλεμος δεν κάνει διακρίσεις ανάμεσα στους ανθρώπους,τις κοινωνικές τάξεις,την καταγωγή καί το χρώμα. Όλοι είναι ανίσχυροι μπροστά του καί το τέλος έρχεται με τον ίδιο,αμείλικτο τρόπο για όλους...
Η γραφή της συγγραφέως είναι μεστή καί σχεδόν κινηματογραφική. Ο λόγος είναι στρωτός,αδιάκοπος καί ενισχύεται από τις παραστατικές εικόνες καί τους ρεαλιστικούς διαλόγους ανάμεσα στους πρωταγωνιστές. Η ροή των γεγονότων είναι συνεχόμενη καί δεν παρεμβάλονται περιττές επαναλήψεις,ή,κοιλιές. Το άφθονο,οικείο λεξιλόγιο βοηθάει με την σειρά του να έχουμε στα χέρια μας ένα βιβλίο που διαβάζεται απνευστί καί καθηλώνει από την αρχή έως καί το τέλος τον αναγνώστη.
Γοητεύομαι από τα βιβλία που αναφέρονται στην περίοδο του Β΄Παγκοσμίου Πολέμου γιατί φαντάζει τόσο μακρυά καί τόσο κοντά μας ταυτόχρονα. Υπάρχουν επιζώντες εκείνης της εποχής που τα ζήσανε από πρώτο χέρι καί τα διηγούνται στις επόμενες γενιές. Δεν υπάρχει κάτι πιο συγκλονιστικό από το να τις ακούς από τα στόματα εκείνων που τις βίωσαν. Ρίγη ανατριχίλας διαπερνούν όλο μας το κορμί καί μας γεννούν σκέψεις κι ερωτηματικά... Γιατί,άραγε,η ανθρωπότητα φτάνει εκεί; Γιατί δεν μαθαίνουμε από τα λάθη του παρελθόντος καί συνεχώς τείνουμε να τα επαναλαμβάνουμε;
Ζωές παράλληλες που αν κι αρχικά μοιάζουν να μην συγκλίνουν πουθενά,τελικά θα ''συναντηθούν'' σε ένα περίεργο σταυροδρόμι της μοίρας. Οι ήρωές μας θα καλεστούν να ''παίξουν'' σε ένα ιδιαίτερο παιχνίδι καί θα μπλεχτούν σε ένα γαϊτανάκι,που θα τους κρατήσει όλους σφιχτά δεμένους μέχρι το τέλος της ζωής τους... Κανείς δεν θα μπορέσει να ξεφύγει,όσο κι αν το προσπαθήσει. Η ελπίδα,όμως,πεθαίνει τελευταία καί γι'αυτό είναι η κινητήριος δύναμή μας. Αυτή θα βοηθήσει τους ήρωές μας να επιβιώσουν καί να τα καταφέρουν.
Τώρα που μένουμε μέσα στο σπίτι,καλό είναι να αφιερώσουμε αρκετό από τον ελεύθερο χρόνο μας στην αναγνώση βιβλίων σαν κι αυτό. Εγώ το λάτρεψα καί σας προτρέπω να το αναζητήσετε καί να το διαβάσετε. Η ανάγνωσή του θα σας δικαιώσει.

Its sheltered waters have played an important role in travel, trade and conflict throughout the centuries.During both world wars,it was the UK's chief naval base.The Fleet Air Arm was a branch of the Royal Navy that operated aircraft from navy ships. During WWII, aeroplanes became a key weapon at sea. Flying from carriers, aircraft armed with bombs or torpedoes could sink ships at distances of hundreds of miles.Dulag Luft were POW transit camps for German-captured members of the Air Force during WWII.
Their main purpose was to act as collection and interrogation centres for newly captured aircrew, before they were transferred in batches to the permanent camps.

Jack grew up in London in a very poor family and was prepared to give most things a go to help make ends meet. When he finally has to flee the law in order to survive, he ends up joining the Merchant Navy. Olivia comes from a very privileged background and when war starts she is sent to live with a wealthy aunt in the Scottish Highlands. She soon develops an independence and a wildness which she would never have envisaged possible living in her cosseted London environment. The third main character in the book is Charlie, also from a well-connected background and he is fast becoming a very successful fighter pilot. Inevitably the lives of these three converge and the relationships which they form and the ravages of war mean that their lives will never be the same again. Set largely in Scotland, this is a frighteningly realistic story of life in war-torn Britain.
A lot of research went into writing this book and it is entirely based on real events that happened during WW2. There are a small number of instances where poetic licence has been applied and these minor deviations from reality are detailed in a section at the back of the book. At its heart it is a love story but there are also some harrowing scenes which are a grim reminder of what life was really like. The Scottish element was particularly interesting for me as it is the place I now call home and the descriptions of the scenery were evocative of the Highlands that I know and love. Above all, the author is a great story-teller and she has used these skills to create a fast-paced and very enjoyable novel which I found gripping from beginning to end.
My only adverse comment about the book is not really a criticism of the novel itself, just a fact about the genre in which it sits. Essentially this is an easy holiday read which doesn’t challenge intellectually or provide food for thought.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good read with a well-constructed storyline. I will certainly look out for more books by Vanessa if this one is typical of her writing style.

Loved the harrowing descriptions of the Merchant Navy convoys and the Navy's Fairey Swordfish bi-plane missions - I had no idea about that part of the war; usually all the focus is on the Battle of Britain and Spitfires when it comes to the air war - but the romance(s) felt underdeveloped and rushed. This one just missed the mark for hitting me right in the feels and becoming a favourite, so perhaps that's why I'm extra-critical.
While I love ambitious epics that carry you through the whole war, if it's rushed it can feel a bit like "Forest Gump-ing" through history to hit all the marks. I think the three-narrator structure prevented diving deeper into the characters, their relationships and their incredible stories at major turning points in history. (The Blitz! Lost at Sea! The Great Escape!). I wanted to spend more time in Scotland, more time with Aunt Nancy's mysterious visitors, more time in London's East End, more time on the Aurora, more time in the POW camp, more time with the Wrens - there was just too much to cram in! Olivia's chapters were particularly weak, compared to Charlie's and Jack's. You can tell the author did a lot of research and it shows, but perhaps she could have pruned back a bit, even though it's tough because it's all so interesting!
Although very different, I'd recommend Connie Willis' Blackout/All Clear for something that has a similar structure/timeline and manages to cram in a lot of varied aspects Britain's war effort without sacrificing plot or character development.

Οι αναπαραστάσεις της Σκωτίας είναι όμορφα δοσμένες και παραστατικά.Η ζωή και ο πόλεμος στην Ρωσία συγκλονιστικά και περιγραφικά με σκληρότητα και ψυχρότητα..Οι ρίψεις τορπιλλών από υποβρύχια Γερμανικά καθώς και αεροπλανοφόρα Βρεττανικά με αντίστοιχες μάχες μεταφέρουν τον αναγνώστη στην καρδιά του Πολέμου και παίρνει μια δόση τι εστί Πόλεμος.Αιχμάλωτοι Πολέμου και η φρικτή ζωή τους.

The Restless Sea by Vanessa De Haan is a well-crafted piece of historical fiction which explores the themes of friendship, loyalty and love.
De Haan’s research and ability to weave multiple perspectives, storylines and settings together is truly something to be admired. Her command of imagery brought the beauty of North Scotland to life, alongside the perilous waves of the Arctic sea and the icy climes of Archangel. It is also worth applauding how exquisitely she brings together the narratives of Jack, Charlie and Olivia.
However, towards the end as these narratives arrive at a climax and head for their resolutions, the plot becomes quite predictable and the ending is rather twee. I would also question if the novel needs to be as long as it is, hitting nearly 500 pages. Despite this, it is a great read which I would recommend, as long as you are willing to commit to the length of De Haan’s brilliant debut.

The role of the Merchant Fleet in the second world war has often been overlooked in favour of those fighting the battles. However without these brave and often unprotected men whose main defence was to sail in convoy, the essential supplies would not have reached their destination and nations would have starved. Their missions to Russia were some of the most challenging in marine history and Vanessa de Haan captures the spirit of the endeavour brilliantly in her novel.
For me the strength of the book was in the history but it is much more than that, it is a love story in human terms and a love story to Scotland too. There are so many aspects to the book that it is hard to say which genre it falls into but it is such a readable novel and one that both men and women will enjoy. I look forward to her new novel coming soon.
For me the strength of the book was in the history but it is much more than that, it is a love story in human terms and a love story to Scotland too. This is billed as a wartime love story and, indeed, we have three main characters (Jack, Charlie and Olivia) who create a mini love triangle at the start of the book. Jack is from the mean streets of London and becomes a Merchant seaman to escape his impoverished past. The other two are more privileged but war strips people to the bones of their humanity and roots can be forgotten. There is a lot of description of the war within these pages and if you're looking for a lighthearted wartime romance this is not the book for you. I found it a little hard going at times. I came away feeling more educated about World War Two but not necessarily entertained by the storyline.

Haven’t come across this author before and picked this book up at the library as it looked an easy read - a love story set during WWII featuring three main characters. It kicks off setting out their backgrounds and bringing the strands together in a really readable way but eventually it gets really gritty when it describes the Russian Arctic convoys and the truly appalling conditions the men in the Royal and Merchant Navy had to endure. My father-in-law, Fred, was one of those men. Excellent writing that has me gripped and I can’t wait to continue reading, though I’m sure I will be sorry to finish the book.

Yes there are probably too many coincidences but it's Fiction!
I keep checking the geography because Loch Ewe & Scarpa Flow are made out to be close whilst they're actually different sides of Scotland - and currently about 7 hours drive apart. However the Navy did use both & that & getting a train to Inverness for somewhere on the West coast is more understandable as there was probably nowhere closer!
I really enjoyed the characters, and the sense of place particularly the Scottish parts, but she brought the cold & heat & fear to life pretty well.

I usually avoid historical romances, and it was only based on recommendation that the book was about The Arctic Convoys that I read this book.
I am so glad I did! Yes, there was romance, but the book was so much more than that. It was a sweeping wartime story that encompassed many military campaigns. I can only imagine the level of research that was required for this book. I was completely hooked from the start. It is difficult to believe that this was a debut novel. Riveting.

Not what I expected. I had read a review and was intrigued as it was billed as being set on Loch Ewe an area I know very well. Very little of the book is actually set on Loch Ewe. It’s an okay war time romance. Don’t know why the author felt the need to turn one of the characters into a character from the Great Escape though.

An exceptional well-written novel set in World War II, recounting the lives of three young people affected by the battles in the North Sea. Wonderful characters, beautiful descriptions and a well paced story create an intriguing and absorbing novel.

This is a fantastic read, incredibly descriptive as it takes you on a journey of the lives of three lives intertwined by war. The book has all the horrors of war, as well as love and loss, you will be throughly moved and educated by this splendid book!

I was lucky enough to win a signed copy of this book through Devon Book club.
Vanessa has carried out meticulous historical research for her novel and developed some characters that you can really feel for during the hardship of war. Luckily there is a small enough cast to keep me engaged as easily confused! I particularly enjoyed the relationship journey between Olivia and Jack. There are a couple of slightly unbelievable coincidences however life can be like that and in war who knows who might cross your path from a previous life (thinking of Hans in particular). I really enjoyed the storyline involving Hans as a German who is hiding in the barn and discovered by kind hearted Olivia.
The scenes in Scotland were beautifully described and certainly made me want to visit the heather coated hills and fresh lochs. I enjoyed watching Olivia change from a well brought up middle class girl to one who mucked in doing her bit and went over and above, whilst having a real love for the countryside.
I know very little about the Second World War and what I have read was centred around the trenches so this made interesting reading particularly learning about the Merchant Navy and the role the Scottish lochs played. The scenes in Russia were harsh, cold and desperate as you’d imagine them to be.

This WWII novel covers the entire war over three characters' stories (Charlie, Jack, and Olivia), providing different insights into what the war was like for a young woman and two men from very different backgrounds. The main plot is formed by the protagonists interactions with each other.
For the most part, the book felt very realistic, due to the huge level of detail and evident research put in by the author. Her descriptions of the scenery and everyday life during the war were very evocative, which made the book feel pretty harrowing at times. In some senses, I much preferred this book over other WWII books, because its grittiness and the trauma of the protagonists felt more realistic than the light-touch treatment and nicey-nicey romances in other novels such as The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Society.
So why only 2 stars? Firstly, the book is incredibly long at nearly 500 pages. The battle scenes felt overly detailed and there was a lot of dialogue, where a narrator overview would have provided a quicker explanation of what was happening. I couldn't help but feel the author tried to cover too much in including the entire war plus three protagonists and their interactions. Since Charlie was the least likable and his piloting battle scenes were hard to follow, I'd have enjoyed the book far better if it just followed Olivia and Jack.
Secondly, and more problematic for me, was that the plot and character interactions were far beyond believable. Characters just happen to bump into each other frequently, which feels highly unlikely in the chaos of war. While I can believe that two people who know of each other might meet on a train (the second coincidence), the number of coincidences became ridiculous, and this really detracted from the realism of the book.

The Restless Sea by Vanessa de Haan. Mark is interested in and adminsters the Corvette Association website and having been told about this novel (because of it’s association with the Atlantic convoys) thought I might appreciate it. Jack, a child of the Blitz, has fled the law to become a seaman in the Merchant Navy. The frozen world of the Russian Arctic convoys may be harsh, but it opens his eyes to a new life. He meets Olivia, the cossetted daughter of an officer family who is relishing the new freedom granted by war and eventually joins the Wrens. But her family – and especially the well-connected Charlie, now a fast-rising pilot – don’t welcome these changes. The paths of all three criss cross throughout the novel especially since Olivia is the object of both Jack and Charlie’s affections.
I particularly enjoyed the descriptions of how Loch Ewe was used as a gathering point for the convoys and what the situation was at the Russian end. I had a vague idea that the Russians had been suffering for some time but no idea how badly and this perspective along with the descriptions of how the Germans considered the Polish, Eastern Europeans and Russians and treated them as sub-humans was very clearly spelt out and informative. A very good historical novel which sheds light on how people of different class and countries were treated and how the war inflicted both danger and effected social upheaval.

(Goodreads Giveaway Win) I didn't really enjoy this one to be honest. There was often too long between each point of view, meaning that you were going back in the timeline and not 100% on what point in time you were, and sometimes it felt a little bit like a list of what was happening. Things happened either really slowly or really quickly.
It was interesting to read about the war and finding out things that I didn't already know about but it didn't quite make up for it.

A complex and interweaving story line vibrates with life owing to the largely credible characters and the excellent scene setting. The novel was well researched; happily free from those glaring wrong assumptions which can so easily lose a reader's trust.
The author has the ability to describe surroundings in a concise yet strikingly evocative manner. The Highland scene setting has to be from personal experience! There are a number of grim scenarios - London in the blitz, the Arctic convoys, the shipwreck and the prisoner of war situation - which are not for the feint-hearted. Although colourfully and forcefully described, de Hann does not fall into the trap of repetition by paraphrase to achieve that effect.
75 years on, it is hard to imagine the effect which the War had on the lives of everyone - the loss of friends and relatives and the fear of it, the deprivations of liberty and many physical essentials. These pressures and constraints have their effect on the characters which is subtly portrayed by their thoughts and actions. The way in which the lives of the four principal protagonists intertwine, is a fascinating thread running through the story.
The denouement remained a mystery until the very last pages.
In all a highly recommended read and a brilliant debut.
