She always wanted to be a writer and wrote her first ‘novel’ when she was nine, filling in countless Woolworths’ exercise books as she grew up. As a teenager she started work for a magazine publishing company and then went on to work as a journalist on Jackie magazine (which she was told was named after her!) before turning to writing novels full-time.
One of Jacqueline’s most successful and enduring creations has been the famous Tracy Beaker, who first appeared in 1991 in The Story of Tracy Beaker. This was also the first of her books to be illustrated by Nick Sharratt. Since then Jacqueline has been on countless awards shortlists and has gone on to win many awards. The Illustrated Mum won the Guardian Children’s Fiction Award, the 1999 Children’s Book of the Year at the British Book Awards and was also shortlisted for the 1999 Whitbread Children’s Book Award.
Double Act won the prestigious Smarties Medal and the Children’s Book Award as well as being highly commended for the Carnegie Medal. The Story of Tracy Beaker won the 2002 Blue Peter People’s Choice Award.
Jacqueline is one of the nation’s favourite authors, and her books are loved and cherished by young readers not only in the UK but all over the world. She has sold millions of books and in the UK alone the total now stands at over 35 million!
In 2002 Jacqueline was awarded the OBE for services to literacy in schools and from 2005 to 2007 she was the Children’s Laureate. In 2008 she became Dame Jacqueline Wilson.

It's like fun-loving Tracy Beaker and all the other characters bounce out from the page and talk to you. Amazingly, children just sink into these books like chocolate bars

I've used this with several of my female students, ranging in age from years 5-10 during literacy/English tutorials and they've all enjoyed it. Lots of fun quizzes and activities, but most popular were the author facts and the short stories.

This has been sat on my bookshelf for years having been brought it as a child. It must've been in half a dozen houses with me, but I've never found the time to sit down and give it a read. This week when trying to complete my Book Challenge I fished it out and sat down with it.
I was intrigued by the format which featured pages about Jacqueline herself followed by pages about her characters. Each character had a clear and unique personality and different fears and wishes. They spoke about their individual families and friends and each page was lit up by doodles. Due to this the book felt familiar to her style and was enjoyable being let into her world as well as having a glimpse of characters that were old and new to me.
Upon finishing the book, I now have the urge to find the books that I didn't read previously and devour them... so I'm off to the charity shops :)

some people don’t know Jacqueline Wilson , that’s so weird to me. I’m a 35 yo female Brit and I’ve read quite a few of hers. My sister always got them for Christmas so I’d read them after her. A great author who really understood what she was trying to do. I’d highly recommend The Illustrated Mum, Bad Girls, Double Act, The Lottie Project, Lizzie Zipmouth, Dustbin Baby and the Tracy Beaker series!

This was such a delightful quick little read and it’s now got me wanting to read Dame Jacqueline’s entire bibliography. Which I might or might not do… either way, her writing is never ever a bore. 5/5*
