For all who loves all things British ...
Because here, it's BC meets Enid Blyton!
The usual ingenuous but resourceful h, a wicked stepmom, plans to do her and her little brother off for the inheritance, a clever disguise and escape into the dark - to her old nanny.
Like all BC hs, this one too lands on her feet despite all the odds. The nanny is now taking care of the niece of the earl H who is away in France busy in his post-war revelry. His intro is another BC staple - getting out of a rumpled ow's bed (both - bed and ow!). *sigh*
Only this ow is not treated like sh*t or with a bored ennui-ed look. He treats her with some affection and regard. (Maybe because the author is showing largesse/sensitivity towards the newly vanquished French.)

The stepmom is resourceful and lands soon after the H does.
The H thinks himself pretty discerning, being a spy and all, and thinks he can perceive a person's character at first meet but with the ow - it takes him a while.

What else?
Yes, Blyton.
The h's hiding in the secret passages and all gave me the EB feel. (See Cover pic)
The good highwayman is a nice touch but an 8 yo holding a gun and then made a part of the dangerous trap is very un-PC - even for the times. Taking off half a star for that.
The romance is negligible and 'love' is sudden and not given time to happen/ grow organically.
More of a BC-EB adventure.
Still, a better BC.

Kyla can't believe that her evil stepmother has sunk to such depths to satisfy her insatiable greed: she plans to sell Kyla to a depraved acquaintance and kill her young brother who has inherited everything. But the young beauty escapes her stepmother's grasp by running away. On the road, she finds unexpected help--and romance--from the dashing Earl of Granston.

Since their adored father, Lord Shenley, passed away, the beautiful young Kyla Shenley and her little brother, Terry, have no one to care for them except for their despised stepmother, Sybil, who has already taken a lover and is plotting to get her greedy hands on the children’s large inheritance.
When Kyla overhears her plans to ensure that young Terry has a ‘fatal accident’ and to drug Kyla and hand her over to a ghastly old man called ‘Lord Frome’ to face a life of debauchery, she sees no alternative but for them both to flee as far away as possible from their appalling stepmother.
Heading for Lilliecote Castle and their beloved Nanny who works there for the Earl of Granston, they are accosted by a highwayman in a wood, but he turns out to be a particularly nice ‘gentleman of the road’, who demands only one of their sandwiches and even offers his protection should they find themselves in dire straits.
When they arrive at The Castle, Nanny suggests that the Master, the Earl of Granston, should not be aware of their identities in case their wicked stepmother comes there seeking them.
And, passing off Kyla as a new Governess to the Earl’s young niece, Jane, Nanny shows them how to hide in The Castle’s ancient secret passages and Priests’ Holes.
But, as the handsome and authoritative Earl takes them under his wing, he suspects that there is more to the lovely Kyla than meets the eye.
So eventually it is he, together with their highwayman friend, who defeats the Wicked Widow and her gang of evil accomplices in a terrifying battle in which the Earl wins Kyla’s heart and soul.

Romance actually takes more of a backseat while there is instead intrigue regarding the following questions:

*Will a wealthy young heir and his older sister succeed in running away from their totally evil stepmother?
*A bored Earl finds he needs a new direction in his life after returning home from the War in France and experiencing the pleasures of Paris. Will he find it?
*Will a mysterious highwayman deliver a vital message to the heroine in time?
*A dramatic skirmish occurs that involves quite a number of characters that appear in the book. What is going to happen?
*Will there be a wedding?

Most of these questions can be easily answered based on past BC titles, but it is still an entertaining story. The opening chapter goes into detail introducing the recently widowed Lady Sybil Shenley and her evil plans for her stepchildren.

Terry, the young heir is only eight years old and acts his age, but he also understands the situation he is in and will act to protect his sister if he can. His sister Kyla is clever and quick thinking in developing their escape plan.

Even though romance happens late in the story, the happiness and celebration towards the end kind of makes up for it. The Earl finds himself with a new family to love and new goals to work towards, and it's good to see him embracing it.
