National bestselling and award-winning author Joanna Campbell Slan was born in Jacksonville, Florida, but she grew up in a small town in Indiana. After graduating from Ball State University with a degree in journalism, she worked as a newspaper reporter, a newspaper ad salesperson, a television talk show host, a college teacher, a public relations professional, and a motivational speaker. In that capacity, she was named by Sharing Ideas Magazine as “one of the top 25 speakers in the world.”

Slan's work has appeared in five of the New York Times Bestselling Chicken Soup for the Soul books, and one of those became a television show. She is the author of nearly 80 books, nonfiction and fiction, including Death of a Schoolgirl, which won the 2013 Daphne du Maurier Award of Excellence.

Joanna's personal essays have appeared in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, and one was made into a television program on the Pax Network. The college textbook Joanna wrote—Using Stories and Humor: Grab Your Audience—has been praised as an invaluable resource by Benjamin Netanyahu’s speechwriter and endorsed by Toastmasters, International.

RT Book Reviews has called Joanna “one of mystery’s rising stars.” Her first novel—Paper, Scissors, Death—was an Agatha Award finalist. It features Kiki Lowenstein, a spunky single mom who lives in St. Louis. The sixth book in that series will be released Summer 2013.

Kirkus Reviews has said, “Slan’s mysteries are most valuable for the well-developed characters and the issues they raise.” RT Book Reviews has said, “Kiki is so darn entertaining that she’ll keep readers hooked.” A series of short stories featuring Kiki are available on Kindle.

Joanna’s newest series—The Jane Eyre Chronicles—began with Death of a Schoolgirl (Berkley) and continues with the release of Death of a Dowager. The series features Charlotte Brontë’s classic heroine Jane Eyre as an amateur sleuth.

As “Lila Dare,” Joanna has penned the fourth book in the Southern Beauty Shop series—Wave Good-bye.

Joanna is married to David Slan. The Slans live on Jupiter Island, Florida.

I like Slan's writing but I think she should have concluded the series around book #8. Good mysteries but tiresome family drama for Kiki Lowenstein. I stopped after book #12 because I particularly didn't like that she had two first person narrators. Moving on to try some of her other cozy mysteries with a different MC.

A must read series

These books are so interesting to read. There is never a dull moment. The story lines touch on many social issues in today's world. So fun to read.

Everyone is the problem, except for Kiki, it is never her, not even when it is her, and she is always thoughtful and caring one, not anyone else, because she follows her faith even though half the time or more she claims she tried to be understanding not judgemental but rinse and repeat on and on. Her mother had issues, her father had issues, her family and friends have issues, but not her, because she is just human so only she gets Grace or whatever, because she had postpartum depression, which was mentioned 2 while times then brushed away. The mother's narcissist issues were dealt with the same way, as were 2 unplanned pregnancies or 3 if you count the lady and the priest. The nanny and the overdone preaching as well as the supposed teaching badly overdone and poorly done. The red herrings stunk like day old fish. The so called solutions were mix of silly, stupid, unbelievable, convoluted, crazy, and imbecilic.

BTW, that sweetener has been said to be artificial in part, and the amount of carbs and sugar and breads alone would risk someone being diabetic or hypoglycemic, and using food emotionally is the opposite of healthy behavior. In fact, for all the pseudo preaching about alcohol, she mentions drinking a bunch of times, when she is not busy talking about how thin people are, or alternatively stuffing her face with junk.

Everyone else do not take care of themselves, while pregnant Kiki texts while driving, runs into trees, spouses beneath vehicles, stands outside on the cold with set clothes, goes off on people because she says she had enough yet these never-ending situations never get fully or even partially explained, not all the money from her husband, not the money to do with Eric's mother, not the money her previous landlord had, none of it. Not that I expected a coherent storyline after wading through 2 long collections of start stop flash back flash forward mishmash mess, but would have been nice to have gotten more than just a migraine out of this chore.

PICTURE PERFECT
Police Chief Chad and Kiki are having a baby, Anya is glad not to be an only child. Kiki getting over having killed a guy. Chad gets a call that his two ex wives are dead. Bullets from his gun killed Brenda. Then finding he has a son he didn’t know about. With Kiki it is never dull.
GROUP PHOTO
Ex mother in law is getting married, then a month cruise. She keep adding to the guest list, and they still had a crasher, Who is he, and now murdered. Up to Kiki to solve so they could get on the cruise. As for Chad bringing home a son and a surprise with a nanny. Never dull with Kiki.
KILLER PAPER CUT
Mayhem and murder seem to go with Kiki and her friends, She is getting a backbone and starting to stand up for what she wants. Making money with her craft store, and her family. Good characters, and can be read alone,
HAND MADE HOLIDAY
Christmas season and Kiki student helper ends up dead. With everything else going on, to figure out why, the list even has her name on it. A busy time for her at the store and at home, she is finding time to juggle them all.
SHOTGUN. WEDDING
Wedding nuptials for them along with a shotgun being fired. Figure out why someone wanted to add this to their day, and put the family at risk. What she does to find the person , is only Kiki would do. Full of mayhem .
GLUE. BABY. GONE
Kiki has her baby, and with everything else, has the baby blues. There is babies being kidnapped, negative words from the mother in laws and a murder of someone who was enemy. Typical day for Kiki.
FATAL FAMILY. ALBUM
Mayhem and murder. Story about family and trust, could they now with the nanny. A lot happened in this book. Woman was killed while she was in a car, and Kiki wants to figure out why. Enjoyable series.

5 Stars. PICTURE, PERFECT, CORPSE #7
Superb writing. Wonderful characters. Imaginative plot. Another page turner. I don’t care a whit about scrapbooking but I love these Kiki Lowenstein books. They are so much more than cozy mysteries!

5 Stars. GROUP, PHOTO, GRAVE #8
Wonderful story! I actually think this may be my favorite of the series so far. While it is, of course, a murder mystery, this book is primarily about the characters and their interactions. An insanely jealous and incompetent Deputy Police Chief is thrown in for good measure. Kiki is still maturing; Anya and Detweiler are still her greatest loves; and life continues to explode in everyone’s face. Don’t miss this one!

4 Stars. KILLER, PAPER, CUT #9
Another good mystery. Kiki has a huge heart - always thinking of the other person first.

3 Stars. HANDMADE, HOLIDAY, HOMICIDE #10
I thought the murder was entirely too obvious, but this book was a nice interlude. It’s always fun to spend time with Kiki and her gang.

5 Stars. SHOTGUN, WEDDING, BELLS #11
Starts with a BANG at Kiki’s wedding. Great story except Kiki is showing a mean streak that is totally out of character for her. Overall, it’s another excellent book!

5 Stars. GLUE, BABY, GONE #12
I enjoyed this book a lot. A baby is abducted leaving no trace. Kiki is overwrought. Cara Mia, one of Kiki’s best friends, visits from Florida; she sees a major problem, and acts - no matter the consequences. Can Kiki survive all the conflict?

3 Stars. FATAL, FAMILY, ALBUM #13
I love Kiki (although she’s not as nice as she used to be, more’s the pity) and her family and friends, but … Fatal, Family, Album had lots of angst, not much humor, and little action. This book just didn’t hold my attention. I miss the fun of the early volumes.

So in my review of the first boxset, I mentioned that Kiki can drive me crazy with how irresponsible she can be with her own safety. When she gets pregnant, you would think she would take more care of herself and start to think about what could happen to her unborn child. Nope, not this woman. She is more concerned with everyone else, and the baby is an afterthought. Even when she is 8 months pregnant! And her ability to disregard her friends and family telling her to take care of her and ease up, she gets mean. No, Kiki was not getting stronger and more take charge, she was blatantly being stupid and stubborn. She just had to have her way. Given she didn't have the greatest childhood, and her 1st husband turned out to be a cheating douchebag, and her mother is even worse now than when she was a child, you would think she would know how to not treat people or to be more sympathetic. Again, no. It requires her friends and family having to remind her to be a good person and to not judge anyone to harshly. That is not to say that she doesn't have her good side, but I expected something different in her growth. It may just be me, but there it is.

Going off half cocked

Though I enjoy the KIKI stories, I’ve also come to the conclusion that much as she rants against it , she is almost always judging people at face value. And harps on others’s perceived flaws, not listening to what others say. Also, it was understandable that she give away her gowns when her circumstances deteriorated after her husband’s murder, but why has she been shopping goodwill and thrift stores when she musthave had closets of serviceable clothing? And she’s very argumentative and unyielding. I’m sorry, but I’ve grown to dislike this character, good as the mysteries are and good supporting characters.

A Series With Substance

I spent the past week reading the first 13 books. I love them! Real life characters present a wide range of real life situations the characters face with varying degrees of success. These stories are entertaining mysteries that will take you through a wide range of emotions from laugh out loud merriment to eyes welling with tears losses. A wonderful series!

Outstanding series

I do crafts (not scrapbooking) so was particularly interested. I started reading the first 6 and wanted to continue. Read books 7-13. Kiki was so interesting in trying to help solve crimes, work at the shop, her relationship with Detweiler, raise her daughter, and subsequent children. Loved Brawny too. Good to see an intelligent woman figure with a backstory. Can’t wait to read the rest of the series and other series by Joanna Campbell Slan.

Totally cool books, great plots and people, really odd typos

Kiki is a wiz at scrapbooking and goes from feckless amateur to fantastic pro from witless widow to fearless/fearsome wife, I can't stop reading about her and her shop and her friends. Joann is a gifted writer and teacher, can't believe how much new stuff I've learned from reading these books, she just needs a better proof reader.

Simplistic? Maybe. But informative

I have just finished all 12 Kiki books. Thankfully no one person can experience all the drama she does. But the mysteries are enjoyable. I also appreciate the spotlight on each of the social issues presented as part of the plot or the character development. There is no preaching. Compassionate and intelligent presentation prevails. I learn something new with each book even though all the subjects are common in our society. Thank you.

Can’t stop wanting more Kiki

I really enjoy these books, partly because I grew up across the river and North of St. Louis and went shopping and to the zoo with my family in St. Louis. I also appreciate the way Joanna explores social issues in a serious but entertaining way. Yes at times I get exasperated by some of the characters, but truthfully I do the same with real people. Overall I just have come to feel like Kiki is someone I would like to have as a friend.

What a Storyteller!

Joanna Campbell Slan takes on beneficial issues, tells a great story, and never gets boring by repeating the same old sayings or idioms. I've seldom read about more wildly interesting characters. I greatly enjoy her humor. I recommend her to all who like mysteries. I'll keep reading them.

Too much drama

Oh my stars, way too much drama happenings in one family unit! Shot, abducted, shot again, friend abducted and on and on .... way too much drama. The premise of the books is really good but all the drama needs to be diluted and spread outside the circle of family and friends.

Another super series!

Our author has addressed some of the most ineresting topics in this latest series of Kiki Lowenstein stories. Intersex?? I'd never heard that term before. Brawny, the Detweiler clan's Scottish nanny's story was heartbreaking. Thank you, Joanna, for tackling such a touching and important topic.

Good reads. Was going to do as separate books, but am reviewing whole set. Kiki is single mother with new love who is a cop. She is pregnant again. Lots of drama, but in the mean time she is running a craft store. I learned lots about scrap booking and may get back into those things

Life Happens

I no sooner finished the first box set when I downloaded the second set and devoured it! It's not just whodunits but also real life situations that are dealt with between the covers of the books. It definitely helps reading them in order~

Non stop action

I absolutely love this series. Non stop action follows Kiki and her immediate and extended family, while also exploring real and actual social issues. The characters are real, as are their problems, trials and tribulations. Wonderful, fun and exciting read.
