THE OFFICIAL TIE-IN TO JOSS WHEDON’S AWARD-WINNING BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER TELEVISION SERIES!
After the third season finale of the Buffy the Vampire television series, Sunnydale High has now gone up in flames - though perhaps a bit more literally than Buffy and the Scooby Gang had ever expected. Now it’s time for college, as Buffy and Willow seek prepare for a more normal life, but from new love (Hi, Riley!) to lost love (Sorry, Oz) and tortured dreams of the rogue Slayer known as Faith, it looks likes the past isn’t ready to let go of our heroes just quite yet.
Maybe the Hellmouth wasn’t so bad after all?
Collects Buffy The Vampire Slayer #20-29 and Angel #15, previously published by Dark Horse Comics. This volume includes “Haunted,” the unforgettable story focusing on Faith courtesy of acclaimed Buffy writer Jane Espenson.
Legacy Editions collect for the first time every issue of the most popular BOOM! Studios series in chronological order, in a newly designed, value priced format.
This is a collection that is based on the television show. This collection takes place during the fourth season.
I am so thrilled that these collections keep on improving. I really disliked the first collection and seriously questioned if I wanted to continue with them. I am so glad that I did. This takes place during Buffy's first year of college. Angel has taken off for L.A. and Riley is now in the picture. Thru this collection we explore Buffy deal with college and the changes in her life. This collection progresses like the television show. We are introduced to the "big bad" and that is our over lying arc for the whole run of the collection. We also get side adventures that do not progress the overall arc. Since Angel is now in L.A. and has his own show we get the requisite crossovers. The first crossover was the highlight of this collection which Bangel fans will eat up. Why not four stars for a rating? I have a similar gripe with this collection as the first collection. It just ends in the middle of a story. No "to be continue" or explanation. I am not even sure if it will be picked up in the next collection so readers might be left hanging.
Obviously, this collection and the other collections do not compare to the show. That being said, they are an entertaining way back in the Buffyverse. The artwork is good and most of the dialogue is on point. The crossovers were terrific and I loved the tie in with the media tie-in books based in this world. This was fun and I will eagerly move onto the next collection. Never thought I would say that after my time with the first collection.
I really got into this volume. The series started off pretty crap and has kept improving to the point where I am very much enjoying it. You'll be wanting to also read the Angel Legacy Edition books for some of the story to make sense.
These stories are set between the third and fourth seasons of Buffy and season 01 of Angel and see the first comic cross over between Buffy and Angel.
What I liked - At this point in time Dark Horse were beginning to try more serialised story telling with the Buffy comics. This worked for making it ‘feel’ more like the show but all these years later doesn’t entirely work given how most of it can’t be classed as remotely canonical. Still, I liked they tried. The language and interactions with the characters is more fluid and show like here and helps the comics resemble the world of Buffy much better.
What I disliked - The comics have a habit of having Buffy square off with larger than life foes that the show rarely did (budget constraints and what not) and whilst it works as it’s a comic book it still removes you from accepting it as a part of the show. Some of the dialogue is janky and doesn’t work. Notably Buffy telling Willow to get laid to love on from Oz...
Favourite panel/ moment - Having Lucy Hanover from the Buffy novels was a fun inclusion that rewarded fans that devoured any/ all Buffy tie in material.
This series just gets better and better; what started off as a confusing jumble, has now transformed into a lucrative storyline that feels like it could be a season of buffy in itself (although it takes place during season 4). I enjoyed the Angel crossovers and the use of some characters popping up from various buffy novels but it can be confusing to where exactly it takes place as there isn't many references to the show so I'm not considering this canon, but still a fun extension of the buffy verse.
This collection of stories is a little uneven. Characterization is not as clearly and cleanly developed as I saw with later “seasons” of the comic book series. There are many little touches of the characters we love, but not enough.
