Since Lady Emilia Grey and her brother lost their parents at a young age, a simple life without privilege or tradition is all that she’s known. But all she ever wanted is a loving home to call her own. So, it comes as a surprise when she catches the eye of the most powerful man in London at the ball that Lady Constance Belmore organised. What does the future hold for her after that fateful meeting?
Lord Joshua Pembroke, Earl of Derby, is a powerful man who is no stranger to high society. In fact, he governs it. When it comes to women, the Earl can pick and choose as he pleases. But upon seeing Emilia, a woman unlike any other he has ever met, a fire will start inside him. Lord Joshua is certain that he will have her. But how far is he willing to go to get her?
When blackmail is the tool used to get Emilia, there’s no going back. Is their undeniable attraction enough to make a forced marriage succeed? Does she have the courage to give full rein to her deepest desires? When it comes to the union between Emilia and the Earl of Derby, all bets are off.
Lucy Langton was born in Boston but currently lives in Maine with her husband and their beautiful twin daughters.
She has a PhD in English literature from Columbia University. Her field of expertise was 19th-century British novel. After college, she went backpacking in Europe where she met her husband. It was love at first sight!
Lucy knew she wanted to be a writer ever since she was a little girl, writing stories from different eras to read to her little brother. Her first story felt like a dream come true.
When she’s not writing, she enjoys painting, eating pizza and baking… not necessarily in that order! She also identifies herself as the biggest Jane Austen fan!
And I am asking myself, why? Because goodness, that was bad. And yes, I do see the irony of my previous sentence.
A Quick, Impersonal, Technical Review - My first Lucy Langton book. - It had a weird writing style, like 3rd person narration between 1st person accounts. Very impersonally theatrical, and not something I could get invested in. - Ah, the many, many historical inaccuracies. How difficult is it to google (if you are unaware) the proper forms of address in English aristocracy/nobility? A daughter of a Baron is not a Lady, and for fucks sake, an Earl is never addressed as Your Grace. Also, a brother of a Baron is not a Lord, especially if the said Baron (deceased) has a son. Dear Lord. - Boring story. A garbled, unexplained istalove meets marriage by blackmail? Considering that the heroine has zero redeeming qualities? No, thank you. - Annoying side characters. If you are going to utilize a side character's story to bring the MCs together, then please be bothered to explain it. - Somehow, I have taken a personal dislike to Gina the maid. I don't know if she was supposed to be a humourous addition, it did not work. She was judgemental above her station, gossipy, and a worst kind of influence. - I liked the hero though, but I don't know what he saw in the heroine.
My Recommendation NO. Just incase the rating did not make that clear.
Is it to much to ask that authors know how the Aristocracy Titles work before writing Historical Romance stories?
Risking it All For A Sinful Earl is the name of this story. Joshua Pembroke, Earl of Dannay was a kind, decent man. He was Not Sinful. Yeah he did use information to force the Smart Mouth twit Amilia Grey to marry him. But he just didn't honestly know how to persuade her. When he accidently runs across some daming information on her also, dumb brother Roderick he uses it to get Amilia to marry him. I didn't like Ameila at all, she had a smart month on her. She came across as mean and bad tempered. She had absolutly nothing to recommend her. Joshua was very rich, powerful Earl. Joshua never intended on exposing her brother. He was going to protect him if Amilia married him. I didn't get why he even wanted her. She wasn't pretty, rich or accomplished, she even dress plain. She had nothing for him to love her. He was not until the end of the book that they even had a quick sexual coupling.
Now to get back to my orignal question. Why doesn't the author know that a Baron's daughter does not carry the title of Lady. She is a mere "Miss" Amilia Grey Not Lady Amilia Grey!! Also there is this scene when Amilia's brother Roderick calls Joshua "Your Grace" thats what you call Dukes!!!! No Earls! The other problem I had was Amilia seeking advice from a Maid who worked for her named Gina. She wasn't even a companion but a maid who seat down with her for tea and make up stories about the Earl and other people of the Ton. Basically she was a Liar!!
The story is full of Unbelievable Nonsense!! Don't wast your time or money on this story!!
I'm beginning to wonder if I read the same book as the rest of the reviewers. This book is FULL of inconsistencies and errors. One does not address an Earl as "My Grace". Just no. In the intro the hero is introduced as the Earl of Derby, but then is referred to as the Earl of Dannay and then the Earl of Dennaby. I was intrigued by the plot for the first half, but with the repeated inconsistencies I started losing interest. The hero and heroine spend hardly anytime together, but then they are suddenly deeply in love. Not to mention the heroine's brother, Roderick, was a damn cowardly idiot. Honestly, I skimmed the last 30% of the books. This book had such potential. I really enjoyed our main characters, but they could have been MORE! In the end this story lacked emotion, development and was chock full of errors.
Would have given a zero if possible. I don't understand the good ratings. I found this book quite boring. Even skipping chapters did not increase interest. Will not read another book by this author.
What's a little blackmail in the overall scheme of things? The tall, handsome, dashing, ambitious, and roguish Earl of Pembroke🐺🍆⛲ spies young Lady Emilia💃💋 across the room at her very first ball. Its love💘 at first sight! And love💘 at first fight!
Emilia💃💋 is scooped up by the forceful, tenacious Earl🐺🍆⛲ for her first and only coming out dance! So bold is he, that he tears up her dance card. Such an audacious man!
Emilia💃💋 doesn't know what to make of the gorgeous and arrogant Earl🐺🍆⛲. She tries her best to avoid him in the days after the ball because he seems so sure she will be his. His sure mindedness maddens and angers her. The Earl🐺🍆⛲ knows what he wants and knows he will get it!
The Earl of Pembroke🐺🍆⛲ is one of the wealthiest men in England and he has the ear and confidence of the Prince👑Regent.
As the Earl🐺🍆⛲ is also the most e!eligible bachelor in England, it takes a long while for the young, naive Emilia💃💋 to realize what the Earl🐺🍆⛲ is offering!
ARC Received from Author📚 The book was provided via Amazon Free. Opinions Expressed here are my own.
The book is very tame, heat wise. It's a very long, slow seduction The Earl🐺🍆⛲ must employ to finally win over his reluctant bride👰.
Great, multi-faceted characters. Very interesting plot. Vivid descriptions. I felt every emotion. Just enough passion! Kept me intrigued from the first page to the last. Simply a GREAT read!
*I received a complimentary ARC of this book in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.
This story starts out horribly which is full of selfish pride and blackmail. This story could have turned out a lot better if the Duke just courted her. Men like this have to use their power to manipulate people to do their will. After forcing her into marrying him, he can't even make love to her due to the guilt of the way he forced her to marry him. The writing becomes stilted at times, and the dialog lacks especially in some of the most important moments like the author wasn't sure how to proceed in the situation. The only thing well done was the physical chemistry between our heroine and villain.
I don't usually leave reviews unless I really, really loved or really, really hated a book. This book was beyond boring. Storyline was not interesting. Main characters had no chemistry. Not a book I would recommend at all.
This book was wordy experience... The characters just kept rehashing the same issues over and over again. I liked the characters, but the plot felt like it wasn't fully realized and that it was over before it began. Unfortunately, I skimmed though the last quarter of the book.
Great romance with magnificent coercion. Historical social gatherings and events. Nice transition from seeming indifference to the very best of family life.
Started out slow and couldn't see where it was going but it turned out to be a good love story, happy ending and all. Good characters, flaws, worries and all.
The story of Lord Joshua Pembroke, Earl of Derby a man who knows what he wants and gets what he wants. As soon as he sees Lady Emilia Grey who happens to be attending her first ball of her first London season he knows he has to have her. Her attraction to him is there also although she doesn’t quite understand how she garnered his attention. While I found his method of achieving his goal very underhanded I understood his reasoning behind it. Having more in common than either knew it was evident to me from the beginning they were meant for each other. Brother Lord Roderick Grey was another story. I kept waiting for him to redeem himself only to realize he couldn’t in my eyes. Given the era he did what was expected but in my eyes what he did was unforgivable. I would have liked to see him grovel and be truly remorseful for his actions. He wasn’t a truly bad person he just allowed the dictate of the day to steer his moral compass. It seemed everything just worked out for him with very little sacrifice. I’m never disappointed with Lucy Langton and honestly recommend Risking it all for the Sinful Earl.
MESMERIZING ADVENTURE!!! Babies on a roll! All the uncertainty, revelations and speculation along with all that nerve racking drama go together piece by piece. Throw in a little intrigue and you have one dynamic page flipping delight that launch this gem to a whole new level. One refreshing spin with an exhilarating storyline and gripping plot propels this bad boy to life flawlessly. Twists and turns abound with unnerving circumstances and a bounty of inadvertent surprises that thrust all of your emotions bursting into play front and center. The dynamics and presentation in layer upon layer that you peel back with each page you fall in love with the tale and the characters one page at a time. The characters and their personalities are original, tangible and well developed with just the right amount of flaws that bring it to life spectacularly. Amazing job Lucy, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.
I absolutely loved reading this sweet romance between Emilia and Joshua. An uncomfortable and impossible marriage proposal leads Emilia to the alter with Joshua. I love Emilia's character. She is intelligent, wise, kind, honest and forthright. She struggles to forgive Joshua for what he did to make her marry him. As I got to know Joshua, his character began to grow on me more and more. There is an especially moving scene where he is on his knees asking for forgiveness. The more Emilia gets to know the real Joshua, not the face he shows to everyone, she is touched by what she learns about him. The story moves along smoothly at a moderate pace. There was just the right amount of drama and tension to hold me and kept me reading page after page. I was very happy with how it ended and especially enjoyed the extended epilogue. A real down to earth emotional moving story that I do recommend.
I don’t know about you, but I love a well done historical Regency Romance book. Lucy Langton’s Risking it All for the Sinful Earl certainly qualifies as such. It really is the promised tale “full of passion, love and intrigue”. It’s a real pleasure watching Emilia grow during the course of the novel despite all the things thrown at her (including blackmail) while equally enjoyable watching Joshua bite off much more than he expected to chew. Well done plot that well written and with a great cast. Frankly, but for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed, I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend.
Risking it All for the Sinful Earl is a must read that will keep you captivated from the moment you begin the journey with Lord Joshua and Emilia. Lucy Langton's characters have depth, are strong willed and have great chemistry. From the first page and throughout I was totally enthralled. The scenes are so vividly detailed it paints an incredible backdrop that makes you feel like you are one with the story. Wonderful tale that hooked me from the start and kept me turning the pages. Throw in all the sizzling romance, drama, suspense, giggles, and a never ending love. Remarkable emotions, and unforgettable characters.
Waaaaaah! I enjoyed this story very much so. The characters were of my liking and the continuous plot, even when dull at time, was connected and well done. I enjoyed their banter, comical interaction, and physical ones.
Another thing I enjoyed, If you couldn’t tell by now is the writing.
If you enjoy, soft men, ever-changing men, the Earl is one for you. If you enjoy, powerful, intelligent, and driven women, Emilia is for you. There were tons of soft scenes, humor, and conversation. From his pet especially, he wanted to be clear about his intentions from the start and even after marriage. I'm very much pleased with this story.
Risking it all for the Sinful Earl is an amazing Regency Romance crafted by Lucy Langton. From the first page, you don't want to put this book down. A lady's first party in society, an Earl's overpowering obsession to claim this lady is just the beginning. There are twists and turns, heartbreak and forgiveness, deception and lies.
Follow along with well crafted characters, beautifully described locales and heart wrenching emotions. If you read this in ebook format be sure to read the epilogue, excellent closure.
I really enjoyed reading this book. You have romance, mystery and betrayal. Sibling bonds can be really tight especially after you lose your parents. But a secret becomes known as well as to threaten their society and work life. This secret is behind a blackmailing marriage. Emilia and Joshua have been through a lot all starting the first time she makes her appearance in society to a huge secret making things uncomfortable to say the least. Emilia, Joshua, Delia and Gina are wonderful characters. Gotta love a strong woman that stands up for herself and those she loves. I recommend this book !
I did enjoy Emilia and Joshua's story. The issues in their relationship were true to the time period. My interest was kept with the obstacles that were solved only to have a new one thrust in their way. I did find the writing a little stilted, but I think that is due to a personal preference of writing style. It had a satisfying ending as both learned the true nature of the other and looked forward to many years together.
I think this is my favorite book by Ms. Langton, it captured my attention the first page and didn't released it until the end of the extended epilogue. Having the Earl so focused on Emilia by using blackmail to get her to marry him and then feeling remorse about how he got her to marry him, wow a man with a conscience. Keep writing thoughtful and entertaining books.
