WITHOUT A TRACE UNSOLVED DISAPPEARANCES AND MYSTERIOUS VANISHINGS We all love a mystery – but what about a mystery that has no solution? Delve into the shadowy world of unsolved disappearances and people who have vanished without a trace, never to be seen again. Such strange and chilling tales run the gamut of the terrifying and the bizarre and include crime victims, lost explorers, ships vanished at sea, outdoor disappearances, and supernatural mysteries that defy all explanation. Among these pages you’ll find accounts of America’s Lost Colony, history’s most famous ghost ships, famous figures who vanished into the unknown, the unknown fate of America’s first kidnapping for ransom, a vanished heiress, lighthouse keepers who impossibly disappeared, the killer who escaped the noose – permanently, the Grand Canyon adventurers who were never seen again, the Prohibition lawman’s nephew who was never found, the Ohio sorority girl who never made it home, the abducted housewife who disappeared, the Hollywood starlet who left her family behind, a missing West Point cadet, the babysitter who vanished on Halloween, the missing Texas couple who may have been Russian spies, the little boy who walked away for good in the Smoky Mountains, a missing heiress to a candy empire, a missing TV news reporter, a long distance runner whose run never ended, plus infamous vanishings of figures like Theodosia Burr, Amelia Earhart, Glenn Miller, Judge Crater, Jimmy Hoffa, and far too many more! Just remember as you turn the pages, that if these people so easily vanished from the face of the earth, then it means it could happen to anyone – perhaps even you. You may want to read this one with the lights on.
Some people might think this is a book about strange disappearances that involve supernatural or space alien explanations but it's not that; it's about people who disappeared where there is no proof of what actually happened to them. The majority of these events involve people who probably ended up murdered for their involvement in some kind of crime.
There are a few that there is a pretty good idea of what happened to them but no absolute proof exists, just a high probability of what is thought to be the most logical explanation. This includes people like Amelia Earhart, Glen Miller and Jimmy Hoffa. The colony of Roanoke is discussed along with the Mary Celeste/Marie Celeste.
There are, though, some very odd things that took place a long time ago including groups of soldiers who were never seen again, including one case that involved as many as 4000 soldiers.
The author also covers ships that disappeared and spends some time debunking the idea of the Bermuda Triangle being responsible for disappearances of boats and planes.
The book is somewhat interesting but it's kind of like reading a mystery book where you are pretty much sure (in the upper 90 percentiles sure) of what happened to the victims.
There are so many interesting and cold missing cases, that it can be hard to put them all into one place. But this book pulls together some of the most fascinating and interesting cold cases of all time.
Without A Trace follows several different cases, talking through the different areas of each one, and what could have happened. While we may never know with all of them, some of them are able to be solved - someone always knows something. It is just sometimes a matter of time before the truth comes out.
Grab this book and dive into some of histories most enduring cold cases. Check them out, mull them over, and keep the history alive with these cold cases!!
"These dead men do tell tales, but their voices come from a place from which they will never be found."
From the Lost Colony of Roanoke Island, the 'Mary Celeste' in 1872, the vanishing of three lighthouse keepers from Eilean Mor all they way through history to the missing news anchor Jodi Sue Huisentruit, and the man who vanished in an airplane bathroom. These haunting and well-rounded tales of the vanished will most certainly keep you up at night.
I really enjoyed this book and, to use too common a phrase, couldn't put it down. A few of the cases I had heard about but the majority were unknown to me. I especially like the historical cases. My only complaint is that I wish Mr. Taylor had included photos. The text has a few typos which could be corrected but I am not one to be upset by poor proof reading.
3.5 entertaining as well as frightening. even tho there where a couple of cases I already knew, I still enjoyed reading new info and hypothesis of what some thought happened. it's a good book to pass time, specially if you're into real crime.
also, while I was reading I noticed the voice I was listening to was ryan Vergara's lol (he's from Watcher, YouTube channel, but was previously on buzzfeed unsolved) that was fun.
As a fan of true crime and true unsolved mysteries, I thought I had read about all of them, but this author wrote about several I've never read before. Inspired me to research some of these stories further. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
This is the first "missing persons" book that I've read which UNCOVERS FACTS about sooo many disappearances. The amazing author, T. TAYLOR really tells Truth amidst a lot of myth and legend. BEST Missing Persons Book yet!
Taylor explores these disappearances with an eye for those most mysterious and least likely to be solved. He sprinkles in both famous and obscure tales. Great job!
I like that this book went in chronological order. I felt that each story was well researched. However, there are numerous typos, grammatical errors and quotes cited incorrectly. I felt like this took away from the book as a whole.
The book was well formatted and I did enjoy the writing style. The sources are fantastic and greatly appreciated. I am looking forward to reading more from Troy Taylor!
