All journalist Christine Lewis wants is the truth. All pastor John Cross wants is to avoid it.

Former CIA agent turned evangelical pastor John Cross is busy caring for the small community of believers he ministers to in Virginia. Journalist Christine Lewis is busy with the demand for her talents from top news agencies in New York City. Neither has any time left for their relationship, which began eight months before when they paired up to prevent the detonation of a chemical bomb in the nation's capital.

But when Christine hears that her stepbrother has been arrested for murder in Texas, they team up again to discover the truth about the crime. Untangling a web of conspiracy, the couple finds themselves in the center of another dangerous situation-and in trouble far deeper than they expected.

With an assassin on the loose, a trusted colleague acting as a double agent, and unreliable artificial intelligence connected to mercenaries who have Cross on their hit list, these two may not get out of the Lone Star State alive.

Cross Shadow is one of the books I have been most looking forward to in 2020. Huff's first book in this series - and his first book ever - released in November. This second book in the trilogy was released on my birthday, something I worked out with the author. (Just kidding!)

The Christian fiction market tends to be a women's market, so it is great to have male authors putting out quality suspense like this, and they are too few.

This second book in the Shepherd Suspense series was just as great as the first was. I hate to over-use the word awesome, but John Cross is such an awesome character: former CIA agent turned pastor. Side note: I find myself envying his spirituality, which is crazy since he is fictional.

The description of Cross Shadow sounds a bit tame, but the book has a lot of action and suspense in it. There are a couple of high speed chases, and Huff did an excellent job of describing everything going on in the chases. I could easily visualize it in my mind, and it rivaled some of the high speed chases I have seen in movies.

The plot was a good one, and there were some things that happened that I did not see coming. I was a little disappointed about the romantic angle - I won't give spoilers away, and that may change in the third book, which cannot come out any time soon!

Cross Shadow is as much of a thrilling ride of suspense and action as A Cross to Kill. Huff is setting a standard of Christian suspense which is a standard others should strive for. Definitely five stars out of 5.

By the way, the first chapter of the third and last book, Right Cross, is that the end of this book. And yes, I made the mistake of reading it. Can't wait to read the rest of the book.

I was provided a copy of this book for review purposes. All opinions in this review are my own.

I really like watching John and Christine grow and develop over the course of this series, in their faith as well as their relationship with each other. We see John struggle with his old habits of deception, while Christine grows in her new faith, wanting to share it but not sure how and wrestling with the tension of Christian faith and the espionage game. I especially appreciated how John and Christine took time to evaluate their relationship rather than believing love at first sight during a hostage rescue is enough to last a lifetime. (I'm looking at you, romantic suspense.) Somehow Andrew Huff managed to make this small-town book lover relate to an ex-CIA officer and a national news reporter. No small feat!

Tons of action and suspense all over this one. There were parts I honestly skimmed because I couldn't take the suspense. (And a few parts I just skimmed…as with the first book, some of the car chases dragged on a bit for my taste.) I expected the plot to play out a little differently based on the book description, but in the end it all came together well. If you're a fan of classic villains with all-encompassing schemes of evil, you will definitely enjoy this. I've read it twice and still can't believe everything that guy did or planned to do to cover his tracks. It was fun to meet some of the agents from the first book, and Armstrong was a great addition. I haven't read the third book yet, nor any sneak peeks from the upcoming series, so maybe my wish has already come true, but Agent Augustus Lee Armstrong needs to have his story told. Especially after his hanging-off-the-bad-guys'-convoy scene, which includes my favorite line in the whole book:

"Baby steps. Wasn't that what his therapist had told him to do in situations like this? Not that they ever discussed situations like this."

Don't tell me there isn't a story there. (Armstrong really does need to get saved and stop cussing, though. Even "off-screen," it was starting to wear on me.)

I must admit that Huff's narrative style is not my usual choice, and sometimes it's hard for me to get into. But these are exactly the stories I've been looking for—Christian suspense that isn't primarily romance or gratuitous bloodshed. A perfect one-two punch of faith and action! (And faith in action.) I hate to read the next book, because then this series will be done…

CROSS SHADOW is another fast-faced, action-packed book in this series. Readers who fell in love with these characters from the first book will continue to do so in book two while hoping they come out alive. Recommended to fans of the series, Christian suspense, and military fiction.

John and Christine don't seem to get much of a break from facing threats and trying to serve their country in this second book. They're also trying to figure out their relationship and how to make things work. I enjoyed their banter and sweet moments as well as getting to see some old friends from the first book. There were a few new characters as well. Then there was this crazy plot (a bit unbelievable and unrealistic, which was my only complaint), but a plot that kept things moving with the car chases, danger, fighting, and suspense that I've now come to expect from this series and author. The faith element didn't come off too strong and I think most would relate to these characters trying to trust God and figure out what He wanted for them. The romance was a sweet aspect to the story, but not the main focus, which definitely worked for me.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This was another thrilling ride! Definitely an entertaining read for Christian suspense and military fiction readers. I'm very curious to see what new developments there will be in these characters' lives in book three.

Content: Some violence, fist fights, shooting, car chases, etc (what you'd expect from this type of story).

Despite the large amount of suspense novels in the Christian fiction category, this series brings a special something that sets it apart (probably the spy aspect. Everything is better with spies). It reads like a spy thriller, with all the action, banter, and subterfuge one must have- along with cool gadgets, lingo, and, of course, vehicle chases. But it brings something much more rare: a heart and soul (and a tad bit more realism).

I loved John Cross from book one, and was glad to see him again, though he seems to be going through a tough season of his life right now. He feels like old habits from his time in the CIA are sneaking back into his life as he deals with tension in his relationship with Christine and facing a future beyond his ministry. I understood his pain. What I didn't understand was how merciless a certain other character was when viewing him.

Christine hasn't grown on me any more than the last book, since I can tell she's all wrong for John. She's growing as a new Christian, which is good. But she still is way harsher with John than there was any call for, especially surrounding a supposed deception that didn't seem very deceptive to me. They still make a very good team in some aspects, though, and it's good to see that she does respect and rely on him when they're in danger, at least.

Guin is my other favorite character, though it felt like I was only being teased with her name for a while. But, as always, she's well worth the wait.

Anyway, if you want to read about spies, Christians dealing with actual problems, a murder mystery, a corporate conspiracy, and one whopper of a climax... well, look no further.

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher, but was not required to write a favorable review.

From the very first scene in this second book of the Shepherd Suspense series, CROSS SHADOW, the action captures the reader's attention and doesn't let up until the very last of the book.

If you like contemporary fiction that is loaded with suspense, fast paced action, and an Adrenalin charged story, then you certainly won't want to miss this book. I encourage reading book one first, but it isn't a must do for reader's enjoyment.

John Cross is "retired" from the CIA and he is now a Baptist pastor in a small church located in a small town. That is the setting for a sedate life after the action charged life he led in the CIA. But things happen. Cross is there. And the action accelerates.

Christine is a news journalist from a major station and somehow she, too, seems to get tangled up in situations that will leave a story reader saying, "Wow!".

I totally enjoyed this book and am looking forward to Author Andrew Huff's next installment. Wonder what John Cross will get into then?

Christine and John are back with more danger and adrenaline in Cross Shadow. I'm really enjoying this series, because I love international thrillers and intrigue. This one is another racefrom the opening incident in NYC to the closing pages in Dallas, Texas. At the core, this book has the hero and heroine wondering how to merge their pasts with their futures and what that means for them as a couple. Throw in lots of action and it's like reading a Mission Impossible book with Jason Bourne moments of introspection. Because the author is involved in media production, the scenes are very visual. One adrenaline ride of a book.

I recently read the first book in this series, A Cross to Kill, and I enjoyed it immensely! I was looking forward to reading this installment in the Shepherd Suspense series, and I was in no way disappointed by this well-written follow-up to the author's debut.

Cross Shadow may be read as a standalone novel, but I highly recommend you read A Cross to Kill first simply because you will have the background knowledge needed to truly understand the main characters in this book and also because A Cross to Kill is such an awesome story!

Cross Shadow begins with several chapters of intense, rapid-fire action involving a character introduced in the first installment in the series. I was glad to see this character was included in book two as she is as likeable and formidable as the main character, John Cross.

Throughout the course of the story, John's and Christine's paths meet again; and whenever they do there is a lot of emotional depth and substance to their interactions. The introduction of a couple of new characters into Cross's social circle make the drama and action even more extreme.

The author is adept at building his story layer upon layer. The plot is intricate and is filled with red herrings (an essential in a good suspense novel, in my opinion), diabolical villains, and good old-fashioned investigative work.

My three favorite aspects of the author's writing style are the faith elements woven into each chapter, and the manner in which he conveys his message (and the message of the characters--good and bad) by not using explicit language or content. This book is completely clean in language and content. Finally, I appreciate the manner in which the main character, John Cross, accepts his own flaws as a human being and how he works to become the man he believes God wants him to be. He is dedicated to his new-found faith and to changing the way he thinks and acts to be more in keeping with his interpretation of God's word.

This book is highly-recommended to fans of Christian/clean fiction, Christian/clean suspense, and Christian/clean romance.

My only concern about this series is this -- Do I really have to wait until 2021 to read the next installment in this series, Right Cross ?

Oh wow, let me catch my breath! Once again, Andrew Huff takes us on an adrenaline-fueled roller coaster ride of a story. There are moments of normalcy in this book, but for the most part it goes from scene to scene of suicide bombers, fight scenes, shootouts, chase scenes, and more. Still reminiscent of a Vince Flynn and Tom Clancy, Huff also uses his unique voice and adds faith elements. I really liked how he diving further in John and Christine’s relationship with its complications of trust and the past. And John Cross is still very John Cross in this book: quiet, efficient, and with an aversion to shooting his gun for fear of taking a human life. But I also thought that Huff expanded on the human side more with Cross as he contemplates his future with Rural Grove Baptist in Mechanicsville, Virginia, my former hometown - the fictitious church has to be a play between Rural Point Road and Walnut Grove Road! Sorry, I digress. In conclusion, if you are looking for an action packed book, this series is definitely for you! On to Book 3!

Ever since I finished reading "A Cross to Kill" by Andrew Huff, I have looked forward to "Cross Shadow", the second book of the series. The hero and heroine of Huff's series are smart, focused and exciting. They are unlikely partners--a former CIA operative turned pastor and an up and coming reporter, but John Cross and Christine Lewis capture our hearts with their courage to confront evil wherever it leads them.

In "Cross Shadow", they are trying to find out who framed Christine's step-brother for murder, but it doesn't turn out to be as simple as just finding the real murderer. Their search becomes more complicated and dangerous and involves more than either of them expected.

Staying true to his craft, Huff keeps us on pins and needles until the very end.  His next novel in the series, "Right Cross" is coming in 2021.

In book two of the Shepherd Suspense series, author Andrew Huff does not experience a sophomore slump. In fact, as we follow John and Christine to Dallas, things heat up quickly.

A fight feet away from a minister’s conference, a complicated technological tangle, local law enforcement, and questions about a relationship that began fast and hard are just pieces of the engaging and intensive Cross Shadow.

High action (fight fights, car chases, and more), a suspenseful plot that will keep you guessing, and questions of faith centered around difficult decisions to save lives will delight fans of spy and action stories. Think Mission Impossible, Jason Bourne, and Jack Reacher.

I can’t wait to catch up with John Cross once again in 2021!

Wow, I enjoyed the first book in the series, A Cross To Kill, and I expected to enjoy another suspense from the author, but, I did not expect it to be quite what it was … like the Mission Impossible movie. I loved getting to see the characters’ struggles and a bit into the characters’ pasts.

I loved seeing Christine and her side of the story … Without giving spoilers, I just loved how she grew since the first book. 😉

I voluntarily received and reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

This is the second book in this Christian fiction series, and you can read this one alone, there are references to what happened, but you will miss the action of how the two main characters meet.
This book starts with Christine Lewis on a subway in NY City, and this is where the action begins, and beware it doesn't let up. How these two individuals survive, but for the "Grace of God".
John Cross follows Christine to Texas, and yes, this is where the action escalates and you wonder how they are able to move on? From a Christian Conference to a State of High Tech Company, you never see where the bullets may start flying or where or when the danger is going to stop!
There is also a teaser at the end or the third installment in this series!

I jumped at the chance to review this second novel in this A Shepherd Suspense trilogy. I thoroughly enjoyed the debut novel, A Cross to Kill and the Redemptive fiction elements that it contained. It is so good to be back in the world of John Cross and Christine Lewis.

If any reader of the first novel thought that the worst was over for John and Christine, they were wrong! This novel takes the journey of these two characters to the next level. True love never runs smoothly they say and John and Christine find this out in this novel. Their relationship was formed in turbulent times in A Cross To Kill that forced them together and under lots of duress, they found they were attracted to each other, despite John being a Pastor with a committed relationship with God while Christine was at the other end of this spectrum.

Such a satisfying ending with Christine developing a relationship with God at the end of that novel. A great foundation to build on their relationship.

However, in this sequel, things are not going as well as they thought or hoped. From the months that have passed from this first adventure, they are both finding their way with each other, and in their occupations that is complicated by many kilometres (miles to my American followers).

Despite their spending time with each other with weeks in between, their occupational duties and the distance inevitably becomes a wedge between them that strains their relationship.

They both have their struggles with the aftermath of the events that brought them together. They desperately need to talk about this but struggle to do so. It is as the description of the novel says,

"All journalist Christine Lewis wants is the truth. All pastor John Cross wants is to avoid it."

And at the end of the novel, we find out why. Then the events of the murder charge against Christine's stepbrother and a suicide bomber complicate their relationship. John cannot separate his past life as a CIA operative with that of being a Pastor and therefore finds it difficult to let Christine investigate these murder claims on her own. Lies and deception now enter their relationship on both their parts. It is an interesting dynamic and one that made me very tense. And the crux of their struggle, that of trust, in each other and in God, is a poignant message to all of us. Its depiction at the end of the novel is powerful. And on top of this trust issue is another that John identifies, he does not know who God wants him to be and what God wants him to do. I am sure every Christian has these doubts and queries at some time or other. I can see readers identifying with this.

Now that they are both involved in this latest threat, the lies and deception they each face gets deeper. In one sense it sets them apart as they try to be honest with each other and themselves and it takes the entire novel to bring this to a head, leaving the ending on a sad note but with hope for the future. But on another sense, they hold onto the thread of caring, respect and foundling love as they work through these issues right up to the end. Then I read the first chapter of the third novel that follows the end and things only get worse. However, if one reads carefully, there is a hint that all is not what it seems, thus setting the scene for a final suspense-filled end to this trilogy. It has to end satisfying as it would then not be a trilogy but would need to be continued.

Huff definitely uses his knowledge and experience of church life, his life as a youth pastor and creative arts pastor together with his bachelor of science in religion degree and a master of arts in Christian education to develop the Christian elements and relationship dynamics in both these novels and the final one to come.

It is a breath of fresh air to have included such accountability and honesty from John's deacon in the character of Gary that keeps John focussed on his role as Pastor and care-fronts John in this role and responsibility. We all need someone like Gary in our Christian relationship and Huff portrays this well. It reminds me of the Paul and Barnabas type relationship of the Bible. This is the type of relationship every Pastor needs in his inner circle.

It was this that contributes to the decision at the end of the novel that John makes that leads into the opening chapter of Right Cross where the reader hits the road running and sets the pace for this future novel.

The problems that John faces in this novel show what it is like when an operative like John moves into a profession such as Pastor, where he has migrated from one end of the spectrum of lies, deceit, killing and special ops training to one of peace, do no harm, healthy counsel, and reliance on God. Somewhere in between such a man or woman would become conflicted unless they totally give up the one for the other. John thought he had and it is this that forms the basis of his conflict with this past CIA life and his new one of being a minister of God. No doubt, this affected Christine and contributed to her doubts and crisis in faith.

Huff depicts this conflict well. The effects of this are interspersed throughout the action, suspense, mystery and thriller scenes and plot. I kept thinking that at any moment their conflict would come to a head and jeopardise their mission and swing the odds further into the hands of Hale and his company in undermining the American President and Administration. But Huff has no such plans and this just adds to the ever-increasing levels and layers of suspense and mystery with its accompanying fast, unrelenting pace.

Now what Huff has established in his debut novel with the car chases has now become his trademark. Many reviewers, commented both positively and negatively on the length and degree of intensity of the car chase scenes in the first novel. Well, Huff is consistent with this in Cross Shadow. This time, it is a different chase scene. We have trucks, SUVs, a high tech motorbike and a helicopter! It would make for a fantastic highlight movie scene if the novel became a movie. It would not surprise me if movies were made of this series!

I only have one concern with this novel. In A Cross To Kill, Huff provided a comprehensive background to the biblical themes and faith issues concerning John and Christine and to the spiritual reasons, John left the CIA and became a Pastor. I would have liked a similar degree of this spirituality in this novel as it was a bit thin and played second fiddle to the action and adventure and the mysteries of who set up Christine's stepbrother and why.  I feel his focus was more on this. I would hate to see Huff became an author who just creates a clean read. Christian authors are capable of more than this especially when they have established this in a previous novel.

Despite this, Cross Shadow is a worthy successor from its predecessor in progressing this trilogy to the next level. It forms a solid middle ground for the finale to be created and the readers eagerly waiting with more than anticipation to see what happens to John and Christine with all their loose ends tied up.

One warning before I end, read the first chapter of the next novel, Right Cross, at your peril! It will whet your appetite for this next one immensely and then leave you hanging until sometime in 2021 to continue!

Highly Recommended.

I really enjoyed the first in the Shepherd Suspense series and was eagerly awaiting to read the second one. However, this one felt a little flat compared to the first in the series.

There is a Mission Impossible feel about the story and it's easy to turn the pages as the pace is always fast and exciting. The most fascinating aspect to the series is John Cross and his faith and his vocation. Can he be an effective pastor when his heart longs for the thrill and chaos of the CIA life? We see the grapple and Huff uses Cross's head church elder, Gary, to serve as a form of intercessor which is done well, but the overall struggle is mostly sidelined by the action. It will be interesting how Huff develops Cross through the series. God equips those He calls and how Huff explores this in Cross's life makes the series keenly interesting.

The story begins with Christine. Her step-brother, Philip, has been arrested for the murder of a work colleague. Christine heads to Dallas to help her brother, and John pursues her fearful she will get into some danger. Well, he was right about that. The baddies soon get involved and for much of the second half of the book we see John, in particular, get himself out of some precarious situations as the aforementioned seek to kill him.

The story around the bad guys takes over, and the original matter of Philip's role in the murder gets lost, even though the two are linked. Huff loves car chases and used them extravagantly in book one. This time they play an even bigger part. There are two chase scenes that probably take up about 20% of the novel. To his credit, Huff makes them incredibly visual but sometimes one loses track of the detail. I skimmed over much of the second one. I hope Huff leaves the car chase behind for book 3 as I feel they've lost their impact and would encourage him to find an alternative device to ramp up the visual action.

I didn't feel this story built on the first one with anything new. Yes, we're thrown into a new plot scenario but the action scenes were similar and I didn't feel there was any great chemistry between John Cross and Christine Lewis and questioned their romantic connection. I liked how Huff brings together a couple who are trying to develop a relationship and clearly following traditional conservative practices. However, the long distance aspect of their relationship inhibits it plus Cross's uncertainty about his vocation and Christine's young faith.

I do look forward to the next in the series simply because I believe John Cross has the potential to be developed into a really fascinating character.

I received a marked up copy of an early PDF version of the story from Kregel via 'I Read with Audra' launch services without any expectation of a favourable review.

If you’re in the market for a super-masculine thrill-a-minute action story, look no further: Cross Shadow by Andrew Huff is the book for you!

Huff continues main character John Cross’ personal angst as he tries to protect girlfriend and journalist Christine Lewis from a sticky situation when investigating her stepbrother’s murder charge. You can feel Huff’s confusion as he tries to live up to what he thinks God’s plan for his life is while also trying to serve as the ultimate protectorate for those around him. The life lesson that comes at Cross is one that we all need to learn: that there’s no better place for us to be than in the center of God’s will.

The book included some relationship drama, which definitely had higher stakes than in the first book, but these two issues made up the sum total of emotional drama for the story – the rest was all action. The story literally jumped from action sequence to surveillance sequence to another dangerous action sequence. It felt like reading a spy movie; I couldn’t help but wonder at the cost of all the cars that got destroyed as I read!

I love a good action flick, and suspenseful stories are actually my favorite to read, but this left me craving more drama. I discovered like I like the balance between character – drama and action-motivation than I thought! I felt as if the characters and their emotions weren’t as fleshed out as they could be, and I wanted to go deeper with them both. I wanted to know more about what they were thinking and feeling, and I think they both got the surface treatment. If you read for the action sequences, though, you definitely don’t want to miss this book.

I did enjoy Huff’s way with words quite a bit. Several times throughout the story I found myself pausing and rereading over the last few lines, thinking that they would make excellent graphics or quotes – things that I wanted to stop, and hang up somewhere, so that I could ponder their meanings later.

Either way, Cross Shadow makes an excellent summer read!

Andrew Huff returns with another installment in his suspense series featuring a former CIA operative turned small-town pastor.

In Cross Shadow, Eight months have gone by since his encounter with a terrorist and confession to his congregation about his CIA past. Pastor John Cross finds his life has not settled down to normal. Christine is busy working in New York City while John ministers in Rural Grove, Virginia.

They work together to prove the innocence of Christine’s stepbrother, Philip, who works for a Texas high-tech company and has been accused of murder. As they untangle a web of lies, can they prove Philip’s innocence before someone else gets killed?

Huff’s second novel is as engaging as his first: filled with action, mystery, and political intrigue. As expected, there is violence, but it is necessary to the story. Both John and Christine continue their faith journey, trying to reconcile their past. Their relationship is complicated but clean. Christine is busy working in New York City while John ministers in Rural Grove, Virginia. Neither has much time to dedicate to a relationship. Given that, it is unclear if they will have a future together.

The author does an excellent job of setting the stage and making characters the reader cares about, and adds in plot twists as the mystery unfolds. However, more often than not, his last name was used, while Christine’s first name was used in the narrative: “Cross and Christine . . . Cross knew Christine,” etc. With that exception, the novel reads like an adrenaline-infused action movie, flying from scene to scene, with an assassin, possible double agent, mercenaries, and military technology playing starring roles.

I was thrilled to get started on book 2 in A Shepherd Suspense Novel! If you haven’t read the 1st book “A Cross to Kill” you will still be able to read this as a standalone book. There will be some content that you may not know but enough fill in information to give you insight into it.

The book follows Christina and John as they start looking into her step-brothers arrest for murder. It starts out with a lot of energy and suspense. As they start to look into the murder they find themselves into a larger conspiracy plot as they uncover secrets that are suppose to stay that way. There are a lot of twist and turns that will surprise you.

The main story takes place in Dallas, Texas. Lots of action packs throughout the pages as you follow Christina and John’s complicated relationship. They have lots of sweet moments and you can’t help but like the two characters. John is still a pastor at his small church in Virginia but it’s hard to take the CIA agent out of him. He’s wondering what God want him to do? It sounds a bit silly a CIA agent turned pastor but it is so good and a clean Christian suspense read.

There is a lot of high speed car chases and other action filled suspense scenes throughout and a lot of spy elements come into play.. The end left me yearning for the 3rd book right away!

Warning! This book is filled with nail-biting action and pulse-altering situations. Proceed with caution!

This is the first book that I've read by Andrew Huff and Cross Shadow has made me a believer! It didn't take long for the action to begin as reporter Christine Lewis realizes that she is on a subway with a suicide bomber. There are many more thrills that involve Christine and John Cross, her 'ex-CIA agent turned minister' boyfriend, as John steps in to help her prove that her step-brother is innocent of murder charges. Suddenly, as their hunt continues, it becomes evident that they are in extreme danger and that our nation's security is also at risk.

Cross Shadow continues Christine and John's partnership that began in A Cross to Kill but this book finds Christine beginning to question her initial reactions to John. Yes, he is a minister, but she feels unable to fully trust him. Will her serious reservations alter their future relationship? John also has troubling questions but they are about his personal connection with God and they mirror our own thoughts. How many of us have wondered if we are truly living for God and serving Him as we should?

I was surprised at Huff's ending but there is a third Shepherd Suspense novel scheduled to release in 2021 so, perhaps, there is still hope for this duo. You will certainly want to read Cross Shadow if you enjoy intense adventure, conspiracy theories, treacherous villains, and a God-fearing hero. I recommend it to all who enjoy Christian suspense novels.

I liked this suspense filled second book in the John Cross series. This one involved some high tech deception as two plot lines are intertwined. The initial plot involves Christine helping her stepbrother accused of murder. He supposedly killed a fellow worker, both employed by a high tech company. That introduces the second plot line. Something is very off at that company. John and Christine team up to deal with both concerns.

I like how Huff blends the potentially budding relationship between John and Christine with lots of action. The high tech company has won a lucrative contract from the government to build a robotic warrior, a scary possibility I've seen in other novels of suspense and international intrigue. When John gets an idea of the company's deception, his life is in danger and soon so is Christine's. The suspense is over the top. Huff knows how to write a chase scene and there is another great one in this novel.

This is a good novel for readers who like lots of suspense and action. The action is well paced and the body count is high. John usually gets through the deadly suspenseful scene but is sometimes too conveniently rescued by old CIA friends. I definitely like the Christian message that comes through John. And I like that we are left with a hint of John's next suspenseful adventure.

With such detailed writing and high-action scenes, these books are hard to put down. I did start off with book one: A Cross to Kill before reading Cross Shadow. I do recommend you read them in order as the relationships will make more sense if you have the background information that’s provided. Plus, they’re both just great books and you’re gonna love them.

Andrew Huff writes amazing fight and car chase scenes. If Die Hard was a book series, I imagine it would be similar to the Shepherd Suspense novels. Edge of your seat doesn’t give enough credit to the tension and action you’ll find inside these novels.

John Cross is quite the conundrum. His past and his present are so different, it’s hard to reconcile the two and seeing him find his way through a new life in Christ while still doing his best to protect the world around him creates that heart-pumping emotion we all love to read and experience.

If you enjoy high impact action, amazing writing, and the heart-thumping reaction of a man trying to prove he’s overcome his past, you must read these books. That’s probably my favorite part. John’s spiritual journey is just as tension-filled and crucial to the story as the car chases. Instead of taking the passenger seat in the story, Jesus has the wheel.

Cross Shadow is a thriller that follows reporter Christine and her former-CIA-agent-turned-Pastor boyfriend John Cross. Okay, when I heard it was about a CIA agent who became a pastor and who stops major catastrophes, I rolled my eyes. It just kind of seems like a silly set-up. However, it surprisingly works.
Most of the book takes place in Dallas, Texas which is not exactly an exotic and exciting place, but they make it work. The author, Andrew Huff, is from that part of the world so it's neat to get the insider perspective. Like any thriller book, you can expect fast-paced action, twists, great fight scenes, and cool technology.
Though this book is published by a Christian publisher, this book doesn't force faith. And I appreciate that. We need more of that! The plot is driven by an enemy not motivated by faith, there are no forced conversations, and nothing in the theme really has a faith feel (like most thrillers, there isn't really a discernable message). The characters are complex and interesting and no one comes off like a stereotype, which is awesome (and not always the case in faith-based stories).

In short: if you like action-adventure or thrillers or want realistic Christian characters who are also cool, read this book.

The stakes are higher than ever in Dallas...

Once again author Andrew Huff delivers a rip-roaring thriller that will leave you gasping and your pulse pounding. Both John Cross and Christine Lewis are back, and, yet again, they will have to try and trust each other as they dodge both bad guys and the law. Betrayal is just around the corner and flying bullets are only a breath away. But, this is pretty much everyday stuff for the small-town preacher and the big city reporter.

I've been looking forward to Cross Shadow since reading the first Shepherd Suspense Novel last fall. While action thrillers are not my movie of choice I do like to read the occasional well written book. And, Cross Shadow IS well written. Andrew Huff keeps up the breakneck pace of the action all while his characters grapple with some tough questions.

I read this book in pretty short order. I couldn't put it down. Like John and Christine I HAD to know the truth. Did her brother really commit murder? What about the shadowy company he worked for and what are they hiding? What will happen to John and Christine? Can they survive intact?

I really enjoyed Cross Shadow. Andrew Huff more than kept me engaged and anxiously turning the pages of this action thriller. Though the ending was a little bittersweet, the promise of more to come in next Shepherd Suspense Novel contented me.

Fans of John Cross and Christine Lewis will be excited to learn that the adventures they began in A Cross To Kill are continuing in Cross Shadow, the second book in the Shepherd Suspense Novel Series!

In this book, the strains of a long-distance relationship and competing job interests have left them on somewhat shaky ground:

All journalist Christine Lewis wants is the truth.
All Pastor John Cross wants is to avoid it.

But as in all good relationships, Christine and John are there for one another when it counts. That time arrives when Christine’s brother is arrested for murder in Texas. The two of them team up to investigate the charges, but what they discover runs far deeper and places them in far more danger than they ever could have imagined.

Once again, Andrew Huff has proven himself to be a masterful storyteller with the power to thrill, chill and delight.

Cross Shadow ends with Chapter One of Book Three in the Series, Right Cross. Can't wait until the arrival of Book Three in 2021!

As I was reading this book, all the action and suspense kept the “Mission Impossible” theme running though my mind. I really like the character of John Cross. He’s a pastor who also is a former CIA agent. He’s pulled back into action as he tries to help journalist Christine Lewis clear her step-brother of the charge of murder. The deeper they get into the investigation, the more they realize this investigation is becoming a national security issue. There’s lot and lots of action in this book that kept me reading quickly to find out what happened next.

This is definitely more of an action/suspense novel then a romantic one. John and Christine’s romance takes an unexpected turn, and it seems as if circumstances may be pulling them apart. The ending to this second book of the series surprised me. There’s a couple of storylines that aren’t tied up in the last chapter of book, so I’ll waiting for Book Three to find out what the author has in store for John and Christine.

There’s a thread of faith that runs throughout the story. This is a clean book that fits the category of Christian fiction.

I hope you are ready for an adrenaline rush. This story is pure action packed from beginning to end. I’m glad to be back with John and see him in action. How would he know that a trip to see Christine would place him in the wrong place at the wrong time? The author does a great job of bringing the two back together in another adventure filled with danger and faith. I love John’s character because he is a pastor first then a CIA agent. Okay maybe he is retired from the CIA but it is hard to tell when he gets tangled up in a tech company. I have to say the technology is kinda spooky and almost realistic.

The author is good at keeping the action going with chase scenes and near death experiences. Is John Cross over his head this time? Will he walk away from his church or follow God’s direction? There is a little more to the relationship between John and Christine which delves more into their past. It was a hard book to put down and I look forward to the next in this explosive series.

I've been reading a lot of horror and science fiction this year, so it's been nice to change things up a bit with my recent read - Cross Shadow by Andrew Huff. It's the second book in the Shepherd Suspense series, which kicked off last year with A Cross to Kill.

While I liked the first novel, I had a lot of issues with the story, and I believe I gave it a 3-star rating. Despite some nitpicking, I wanted to read the sequel from Kregel Publications.

For a Christian thriller, this novel has a lot of action and a high body count. This time around, the plot is better laid out and isn't as predictable as A Cross to Kill; though there are a few cliched scenes where the primary character, John Cross, gets out a deadly situation way too easy. Cross's love interest, Christine Lewis, is more fleshed out, and their relationship feels more realistic.

Overall, I enjoyed reading Cross Shadow. It's a well-written sequel that surpasses the original. If you like mysteries and thrillers, then I recommend getting Cross Shadow.

Andrew Huff has created a character : John Cross – think Jason Bourne and 007 meets Christian Pastor. We met John Cross in A Cross to Kill which you can read about HERE.

This is the second book in the Shepherd Suspense series.

Book 2 is a bit more about John and Christine (the woman he rescues in the first book), as they find themselves in a mess of trouble, again! John has to face some difficult decisions with regards to his church and his budding relationship with Christine.

I really enjoyed this book, along with the first! They are both fast paced, you kind of hit the ground running. The characters are solid and seem to wrestle with relationships and life, like the rest of us. I love how Andrew weaves in faith throughout the book, and especially how Christine is trying to grow in her young faith and apply it to her daily life. It is something so many of us work at no matter where we are in our faith journey.

The suspense and drama continue in Andrew Huff's newest novel, "Cross Shadow." Reporter Christine Lewis is asked to check into the arrest of her stepbrother in Texas for murder but to her surprise and indignation John Cross has followed her to Dallas. What follows is a cat and mouse game to find out why Christine's stepbrother is being framed for murder while being shot at and chased. Not only does this story explore more of the relationship between Christine and John; it explores John's life as a pastor and a former CIA agent and his relationship with God. Can he live with a foot in both worlds? How can he reconcile lying to find the truth? This is a fast paced read with endearing characters. I am secretly rooting for Christine and John to discover how to make their relationship work as the reader is left wondering at the end of the book. So I am anxiously looking forward to the third installment. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Audra Jennings PR and was under no obligation to post a review. a Rafflecopter giveaway

What an action-packed story! There were some awesome fight sequences and some amazing car chases! There's a little bit of trouble in paradise as John and Christine seemed to have a hard time trusting each other. John's so used to lying back in his CIA days and it's a hard habit to break, no matter how hard he tried. And if you don't have trust... They also both wondered about where their lives were going. They wanted to do God's will. They both prayed throughout the story. It was interesting watching them investigate and there was a little bit of funny banter. There was a surprise ending so I'll be interested to see where it goes. This worked well as a stand-alone but it was nice to know their back story from the first book, which I also liked. I recommend it if you like suspense!

Andrew Huff did it again. Cross Shadow is equal to A Cross to Kill. I didn’t know if he could reach that same level a second time, but he did. The action sequences and complex intrigue of the plot keep you glued to the page.

The character development continues on solid ground. John and Christine are in an awkward phase of their relationship. They trust each other, and know they can count on each other. But they frustrate each other too. No longer the ‘crisis romance’ of the first book, more the ‘how does this work in regular life?’ phase.

The Sci-fi tech being used and developed was something I thoroughly enjoyed. What can I say, I grew up on Star Trek, Star Wars, etc, and my current favorite Sci-fi show is Eureka!

Thank You Andrew Huff for another fun day!
