When I get a call that my twin brother's been shot, I'm in shock as I head back to Baltimore to be with him. Seeing him in a coma is the hardest thing I've ever had to do; sitting here not knowing whether he's going to live or die is the worst thing I can imagine. But at least Jameson is with me-he makes it more bearable, and I don't feel like I'm in this alone. With everything going on, I probably shouldn't be checking out my brother's work partner, but I can't seem to help it. Jameson's been so sweet and kind and considerate; not to mention he's so sexy I can't keep my eyes off him.
Jameson
My partner getting shot and ending up in a coma brings everything in my world to a screeching halt. He's not only my partner on the police force, but my best friend and confidant. When I see his twin brother, Holden, sitting in the waiting room, I'm overwhelmed with gratitude that he neither blames me nor pushes me away. Now I'm doing my best to take care of him and support him; if only I'd stop noticing how his emotions reflect in his eyes and wondering how it would feel to touch him.
Will the bonding that takes place during their long bedside vigils become more than they expected? Can they be honest enough with themselves and each other to take it to the next level? And if they do, will Holden be willing to sacrifice the life he loves for the brother he's kept at arm's length for almost ten years and the man who could end up being his everything?
Heart Strain is the first book in the Interlocking Fragments series, but is a standalone novel. Each book in the series will feature a different couple, but the couples will show up throughout the whole series. This is a contemporary romance intended for 18+.
Michele is married to an awesome guy that puts up with her and all the burnt dinners she makes—hey, sometimes characters are a bit distracting, and who doesn’t plot when they’re supposed to be cooking? They live together in Baltimore, Maryland with two little monsters, a three-legged princess, a four-legged goofball, and a cutie with giant ears (aka their two kids, their two cats, and their dog). She hopes to rescue another cat soon, and if her hubby wouldn’t kill her, she’d get more than one… and maybe a few more dogs as well.
She loves creating worlds filled with lots of love, chosen family, and of course, magic, but she also likes making the characters fight for that happy ending. She hopes to one day write all the stories in her head—even if there are too many to count!

Expectation: Hot and Angsty. Reality: Sweet and Wholesome
There wasn’t necessarily anything wrong with the book, only that I was bored lol
The cover made me think this would be a bit angsty but this was a low risk novel with some healthy communication, and guys that felt comfortable showing affection with their friends and family (forehead kisses, handholding, hugging, etc). There was nothing at all forbidden about the “brothers best friend” trope here, in fact it didn’t even feel like that. Maybe because there was no drama or issues at play, I felt like Holden and Jameson didn’t have a whole lot of chemistry. I wasn’t seeing their sparks.
I also REALLY disliked the introductory scene with Holden (on the first page) because he was an absolute asshole. Which was weird and so off because that was the exact opposite of his personality throughout this entire book. He’s awkward and nice and adorable. Idk why it was even included.
I do wish there was more resolution between Holden and Drix, his twin, but I guess that will happen in his book. I liked how this set up a solid base for a lot of characters. The next books did catch my eye and I want to read them, hopefully they’re a bit steamier and passionate.
Note: An ARC was provided by the authors via LesCourt ARC Team.
I'd only read one other book prior to this one from Michele Notaro and Sammi Cee, and it was great seeing this shift from one M/M romance sub-genre (fantasy) to another (contemporary). Heart Strain was a good start to this new series, with a fair amount of angst that also had quite a bit of lighthearted humor to it.
I liked the slow burn feel when it came to the romance aspect because it allowed Holden and Jameson to get to know each other better rather than just rely on what Jameson knew of Holden through Hendrix (Holden's twin brother and Jameson's best friend and partner) and what memories Holden had of a younger Jameson. I also happened to like seeing the relationship between Holden and Hendrix mend without needing to be overly sappy about it--although there were certainly some things about their family that needed to be discussed.
This also had a pretty good cast of supporting characters, particularly, Hendrix, Gavin (Holden's best friend), Aiden (a fellow police officer and Jameson's temporary partner), and Jovany (Jameson's brother), all of whom, save for Gavin (since the second book in the series already features him), have me curious as to who'll be getting books in the series. I may be already shipping a couple of them. Hehe.
Overall, Heart Strain was an entertaining read and has me hopeful for the rest of the Interlocking Fragments series. Four stars. ♥
* I was gifted an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review *
It was my first book by this author and as much I enjoyed reading it, I am a little bit disappointed. I loved the blurb and had high expectation. Unfortunately, this story is a little too long and definitely too sweet. Everything seems to be soooo annoyingly easy here.
We first meet MCs in the hospital while they are visiting Drix, Jameson's partner and Holden's brother. They bond over their pain and worry about Drix and spend almost all their time together.
It is a slow burn type of a story with a huge amount of DRAMA. It feels like both MCs, their childhoods, their friends and families had lots of serious problems and yet everything is always fine in the end. It didn't feel believable that everything was so sad, dramatic, everyone had a traumatic past and was bullied in school. Too much is simply too much. Same goes to the never ending amount of conversations, eating and crying. I truly believe that there has to be some getting to know each other in a romance book, but seriously, somewhere around 60% I had enough, how many times can I read about cooking, eating or ordering a take out? How many times I can read another teary story from the past?
In theory, this is a really good story with likable characters and lots of emotions, but in practice it is definitely too long and all those unnecessary pages devoted to irrelevant conversations makes it really annoying.
Holden is having a perfectly pleasant evening, with some guy’s tongue down his throat and about to get laid. And then comes the phone call. His brother, his twin brother, a police officer back in their home town, has been shot and he’s not expected to live. Holden drops everything to fly back, to be by his brother’s side if — no, when Hendrix wakes up. Because Drix is going to wake up. He has to.
When Drix was shot, his partner James had no choice but to fire shots in return, killing the suspect. Now James can only wait, helpless, as his best friend — his only friend — is in surgery. The only bright spot in this dark time is that Holden is back in town. Holden, his partner’s twin brother, on whom he’d had a not-so-small crush on back in high school.
I absolutely adored this book. It took me in from the first page and didn’t let me go. I loved the MC’s both men coming from terrible family backgrounds finding a family with each other.
This book was sweet, hawt, emotional, grown up, and all the things I love in a book. And I CAN NOT WAIT for Gavin’s story. I defiantly will be reading that one too. This book leaves you with a HFN/HEA ending. I can’t really see the MC’s splitting, but there were a few questions left, and I suspect they will start to unravel through the other books.
The writing was perfect, the side characters were amazing. I loved it, looking forward to more from this series, and defiantly going to explore more of what these authors have written
Man, the title of this book is so appropriate. Holy geez. This sucker pulls every tear out of you and then squeezes some more. Wow. It's is extremely emotional and as a warning, there is some talk of verbal abuse and emotional as well. Bad families, bad pasts. And this book starts out...well, bad. Holden was pretty happy where he was. He had his best friend, Gaven, who was his family and he loved his job as a vet. Everything was alright for the most part, until he got a phone call. His brother has been shot in the line of duty and may not make it out alive. And if he does, he may not walk or other things. Holden immediately leaves and gets there waiting for news from his brother's surgery. While he's trying to keep it together, he hears his old nickname that he hates, being called and looks up to see, James. Or Jameson as he's called now. He had no idea he was his brother's cop partner and was there when it happened. Jameson can't help but feel guilty. If he was just a bit faster. But Holden and everyone assures him, it wasn't his fault. Well, until his asshole uncle and the other stooges show up. But they ignore them and concentrate on Drix. Everyday, they visit and stay. Talking to him, trying to make things feel normal and make him fight to wake up from his coma. Eventually he does, but it's going to be a long road and Drix is not a happy patient. During this Jameson and Holden get to know each other better as well and learn about each other's pasts and why they are the way they are. As their friendship grows, it turns into something more. But Jameson is afraid Holden is going to leave again. And doesn't know if he can live with it if he does. Gah! Drix being shot. Holden and Jameson's pasts, and even Gaven's. The guilt, the pain of watching Drix in the coma, the pain of revealing the pasts. The pain of dealing with asshole family. And man, that's just a small part. Well, pretty big over all but definitely not all. It's a lot to take in. But it's so damn good. You learn in this book who and what true family is. And that secrets can harm instead of help. I swear this is another one of those books I wish I could reach in and slap some people lol. Oh my gah. But what I love, is no matter how hard each day was, even when Drix woke, they persevered. They may not have wanted to, but they did. They got up and kept fighting. They cried, they yelled, they grieved, but they kept getting back up. And that's what's important. Not to give up. Drix tries, but they don't let him. Everyone has to keep going and be glad they made it out alive. It's a hard story. It's not a happy, happy, joy, joy book. It doesn't pull punches. It gives you the nitty gritty. But it's worth every page and so good. And the way it ended, yeah I'm ready to see who's next. I have a funny feeling, but we will see.
Holden Weston would never have returned home had his twin brother not been injured on the job. A terrible childhood warranted it as far as he was concerned, and as much as he'd missed his brother, this was for the best. But the instant the news was received, Holden uprooted and flew to his brother's bedside. What he never expected, was to be dosed with the past in the form of his old time crush.
Policing was something Jameson Fox fell into when his estranged family's issues forced his hands. He wanted to do right for all those who could not defend themselves. What he never expected was to not able to protect Hendrix, the one person he considered family. Nor was becoming reacquainted with his school hood crush in the plans. But there Holden was, bigger, braver and opening his mind to so much more.
As the men held vigil for Holden's brother and Jameson's partner, they could not deny the chemistry flowing around them. One night would never be enough. How would they explain when Hendrix woke up? And how would it work out when Holden was adamant that he was only saying long enough to get his brother better.
This was a good read focusing more on understanding past events, a budding romance and praying a comatose patient awake. The secondary characters were a good fit and I cannot wait for book two which will follow Holden's best friend Gavin's story. Gavin is broken and needs to tell his story and I want to be there for it. Oh, and there are some great laugh out loud and sweet moments.
I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the authors through LesCourt.
This was a very nice story. I was thrown for a bit of a loop when it was quickly revealed that these two had known each other in high school, I was under the assumption that they hadn’t known each other at all. Not that it’s a bad thing it just puts the story on a different track than I had expected. The same kind of attitude is taken with Jameson’s relation to the police chief, it’s made out like they are strangers and then the relationship is mentioned and really something like that just throws me off.
Holden left his hometown right after high school and has only been back briefly to visit his brother over the years he still struggles with how he was treated by his mother and while we learn from Jameson that his brother, Drix, has always wanted him to come home they really need to have a sit down to get all their cards on the table. Jameson is really so strong, seeing how his own family treats him and what he had to grow up with let alone choose to work with just breaks my heart.
I loved that these two were able to help heal each other a bit, though I expect and look forward to Holden and Drix having a heart to heart in a future book. I adored Gavin too and can’t wait for his book as it looks like he will be moving there soon enough.
I received an ARC of this book and am giving an honest review.
Man these two had crappy families, and it just kind of rips you up a little bit.
When you find out why Holton left, and what Hendrix's actual reaction was, and his expectations, it's pretty touching. These guys are dynamic characters. Jameson and Hendrix both grew up to be cops. Holts is a veterinarian. Even Gavin, who we see very little of turns out to be a therapist.
You got this one surly guy who was injured in the line of combat, and his brother who never felt like coming back to Boston for entirely valid reasons, but who suddenly finds himself back there waiting to see what happens to his injured brother period.
If you can deal with a little bit of angst, there's a good payoff, and a fully fleshed out h/c story here. I definitely recommend this one. 5/5
I hav e yet to read a book or story written, or co-written, by Ms. Notaro that I didn't love and this is no exception. It has all the classic hallmarks of her writing: realistic, relatable and lovable characters; a compelling storyline and, of course, a little bit of sexy thrown in for good measure.
I have been privileged in the past to beta read for Ms. Notaro, although not for this book. However, this did not influence this review in any way. I would love this book regardless, and honestly I barely put it down for the past 24 hours or less that it took me to read it. I would highly recommend it to anyone.
Heart Strain by Michele Notaro and Sammi Cee is book one in the Interlocking Fragments series. The book focuses on Holden and Jameson. Holden’s twin brother has been shot in an arrest gone wrong and he needs to rush back to his bedside, but being back in Baltimore is hard for Holden and his family house holds a lot of bad memories in general for him. Enter Jameson, Holden’s brothers work partner, a man who holds a lot of guilt regarding what has happened to Hendrix, even though it wasn’t his fault and carrying around a lot of baggage due to his family’s treatment of him.
Here we have a beautifully woven story about two broken pieces finding each other. Both Holden and Jameson have their own story to tell and we learn about them and what they have been through throughout the story whilst also seeing two people start a new relationship in the face of something tragic which has happened. Both characters bring a lot to the story and there are deep moments of heart-break for the two when they communicate how they feel not only about each other but also about themselves and their respective family members. It certainly is a slow burn read but you want to keep turning the pages to find out what happens not only to the main characters but also the secondary characters too (I hope everyone gets a book!)
This story is all about love, friendship, family and some pretty cute animals too. A must read!
The blurb says this is a standalone book. I strongly disagree.
3.25 🌟 grudgingly rounded up
I was enjoying the story just fine until I realized I was running out of book, and the romance was wrapping up, but there were so many plotlines left hanging that you will definitely have to read the next book to see what is going on. I just didn't realize that the series was going to be so intertwined, I guess. But, the story was pretty good, and the characters are well developed throughout the story, so I had to round up my rating...just because I was disappointed with the way the author chose to end the story does not mean it's a bad book.
Holden does not want to return to his hometown, but when he gets the call that his twin has been injured in the line of duty, he rushes to the hospital as quickly as possible. When he arrives, he is alone, scared, and on the verge of breaking apart, until his boyhood crush shows up in the waiting room looking as broken as he is. It turns out that James -now Jameson - grew up and is the 'Jameson' that Drix has mentioned being his partner on the police force.
As the two men watch over Hendricks in his coma, they start getting to know each other. When the Chief and his cronies show up, the animosity towards Jameson comes through loud and clear, but Holden waits for their departure before he asks what he already knows from the past. As time goes by, the attraction between the two MCs grows, but they both hold back. As friends, they are able to unburden their hearts to each other of past hurts and the scars they have left on their lives. When they finally decide to date, they try to take things slowly, but eventually things move forward quickly, and the men find themselves in a relationship they both love and adore.
I have left out a lot about the underlying plotlines threaded throughout this book. There is Drix, and his condition after the injuries. There is also Gavin, who has been the closest thing to family Holden has had since moving away. Gavin has his own painful history that is not explained, but his book is next in the series. And then there's Jameson's family issues, especially what is happening with his brother.
Overall, I did enjoy the story. And, I will probably pick up Gavin's book when it comes out just to find out what is going on...I just hate cliffhangers when I'm not expecting it! Lol
* I received an ARC of this book and I am leaving my honest review. *
I found this book on the "Customers Who Bought This Also Bought This" (on my kindle) for Someday, Someday, and it got pretty good review so I was like yes I will read you and probably like you... and it was okay, not close to Someday, Someday at all.
There was no conflict... I know that some people would enjoy that, and I mean I guess you could say the conflict was the fact that Holden was the brother of Hendrix who is Jameson's partner on the police force. But that was resolved very quickly.. I don't know what to think because normally I am used to the pattern of reading a romance when you get to about the 75%-80% and the conflict arrises and you know that around 90% the conflict will be resolved. In this book I got to the 75%-80% mark and... nothing no conflict at all, I was slightly confused and then all of a sudden the book is done.
I will say at the beginning I enjoyed the relationship with Jameson and Holden, but then I didn't feel anything towards them. They both had very similar ways that they were being raised and issues that they went through with their parents, especially their mom's. I thought there would be more conflict with Jameson and his Uncle or cousin or brother (who I felt like had unresolved things with Jameson, that I am unsure if they will ever be brought up again since this is technically a "standalone book"). There were a lot of open ends, and it wasn't clear if his brother was starting to accept him or if he is up to something sinister... and I don't know if we will ever find out... I don't think I will be reading the next book, I didn't care too much for any other characters after awhile.
Overall this was underwhelming, and I had high expectations going in to this after Someday, Someday, and I was let down.
Cover – Black and white static-effect still-frame shot of a man with his head bowed slightly. Title font is not easily legible but authors font is. In this case, it was not the cover that appealed to me, it was the synopsis that gripped me and would not let go.
HOLY CRAP ON TOAST… This is the first time reading either author and now I’m wondering WTH actually took me so dang long!!
Holden (Holds), a Veterinarian, rushes home when learning his twin (Hendrix, aka Drix) was shot multiple times in the line of duty. Jameson, Drix’s partner, is mired in guilt and grief over the catastrophic call that has left Holden’s brother fighting for his life. While Drix has a long road to recovery and Jameson is on a forced leave from the force, Jameson and Holden reconnect (they all went to school together) slowly developing a bond and rekindling their secret crushes on one another. Jameson’s family aside, this was a heartfelt book with tons of emotions. Raw and vulnerable moments, loyalty and strength of friendships tested, bonds formed and forged, and PETS to be ADORED! The story between our lead men was more of a slow-burn that felt completely appropriate for the content. There are several loose ends to be tied up with the SECONDARY characters but our lead couple gets a solid conclusion. I will be following/stalking this series for more! . Wow! Just a few pages in and I am already crying! Sibling love really gets to me, having two sisters of my own. Holden and Jameson, sweet and so loving. You would not think that they have gone through so much pain in the past. Two people who have kept pain in their hearts for a long time, now have a chance to heal and maybe be with each other.
Abuse can come in many forms, and some of these are more painful and lasts longer than physical ones. Sometimes it can come from people you don’t expect it from. When we find a kindred spirit, we try to build on that and hope that it’ll last. Both Holden and Jameson have gone through a lot in their past, Jameson is still going through it, but finding each other again and this time, trying to really get to know each other, will be their second chance.
This novel navigated through all these emotions and how each of the MC coped in their own ways what life dealt them with. Ms. Michele Notaro and Ms. Sammi Cee, you have shown us how brothers can still be there for each other when the time comes, even after being apart for so long. You have shown us that family can be who you choose them to be, blood-related or not! Congratulations on your new series, looking forward to more! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Terrific story of connection and finding love unexpectedly. This story has all the feels for me! I loved the MC's and the supporting characters are amazing. We find special people in friends, family, nursing staff and more. The writing is awesome and the plot is well developed. I sat an read this in one sitting and could not put it down.
Holden (Holds) and Jamison (Foxy) are amazing characters, they are well developed and have so many layers. My heart hurt at times and did the happy dance at others. This is a slow burn of the very best kind and it will be a re-read for me. Holds and Foxy are just so beautiful together and they will steam up your kindle.
One of my favorite quotes from this book is: "Life can be hard and crazy and far from perfect, but building a life with this wonderful man, is better than anything i could've ever wished for.'
Heart Strain is the first book in the Interlocking Fragments series by Michele Notaro and Sammi Cee. I am so looking forward to the next book that will be about Gavin, Holds best friend.
I was gifted this book from the LesCourt Author Services and i freely give my honest opinion and review.
This book has so many strong characters. They support each other and I love Holden and Jameson together. This book has childhood bullying, messed up families, friendships that are unbreakable, and falling in love. It takes a strong person to let go and bring down their walls around their heart to let love in no matter how hard it is to go back in your past to move forward in our lives. I can't wait for the next book to find out Gavins story. I volunteerly review this Advance Readers Copy of this book.
When I say this is the perfect start to what looks like an exciting and intriguing series I mean it's absolutely perfect. We get a great love story with Holden and Jameson but we get so much more. I have so many questions that need answers. What's up with Drix? What's Aidien dealing with at home? Most importantly, who will be Gavin's love interest? I do think he will be the perfect person to help someone though. Can't wait to find out. These two authors are amazing in their solo work and brilliant together. Now I just need more. Nudge nudge lol.
A little long but not bad. Slow burn but then they get boringly stupid for a while and there’s a looong stretch of exposition. Just too much repetitive daily details. Lots of interactions with other characters that point to eventual conflicts to come for Jameson but nothing occurs in this book. There’s a lot left hanging including Drix recovery. That’s what caught my interest so it was disappointing nothing was resolved and feels incomplete if the next book is supposedly about Gavin. I’ll probably get the next book to see where the story arc goes.
This story is just filled with so many feelings...it broke my hurt but then slowly healed it and filled it with love. Holden and Jamison are full of hurt that makes you want to hug and give them love. You go on an emotional ride of jealousy, anger, hope, friendship and love that sucks you right in. The love they find each other leads to healing and happiness for two hurt souls that just soothes your soul. I really enjoyed this story and I can't wait for the next book to find out about Hendrix. And hope Jamison's awful family gets what they deserve
amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing i loved this so much and i cannot wait for book 2. these two authors together just amaze me.. they push each other and make each other better. the emotion they put into their stories.. the love.. the anger.. the interest.. all of it is amazing and wonderful! i loved loved loved it
