Fritzy Finds a Hat: A Gentle Tale to Help Talk with Children About Cancer

Rate this book
Fritzy’s mom has cancer, which is pretty scary. But Fritzy is on a mission to find his mom the perfect hat she can wear to her treatments. What will he find?

In this charming children’s book, Olympic gold medal-winning figure skater and bestselling author Scott Hamilton teams up with country music superstar Brad Paisley to share a story that will help parents talk with their children about cancer. The story centers around an ice-skating little boy named Fritzy who learns his mom has cancer. Each new page has him searching for a different hat for his mom to wear as she undergoes cancer treatments.

The delightful illustrations by Brad Paisley lend an air of whimsy and thoughtfulness while the gentle storyline by cancer survivor Scott Hamilton teaches children a powerful message of how their love and support can sometimes be the best medicine. Fritzy Finds a Hat can be read to younger children or given to older children to read themselves.

Proceeds from the book will benefit vital cancer research through the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation and at Moffitt Cancer Center as well as Moffitt's Families First Program.

This is a decent book for the arsenal of "talking to kids about cancer."

My main issue with the canon of 'picture books for kids on the topic of cancer' is that they all seem to focus on hair loss, hats and wigs. I know that is a big deal and definitely merits discussion; but noticing that mom is always feeling sick or sad, not being able to hug mom for awhile, etc- those are also important things that I'm still looking for in a picture book. They remain a sort of afterthought. But at least in this book, the hats Fritzy is imagining tie back into those things he has learned about mom- that she might feel cold, she might not be hungry, and so on. That was a nice touch.

(There is one line about saying a prayer, if the target audience of this is not religious)

Picture Book. I picked up this book once I found out that one of my favorite singers (Brad Paisley) was the illustrator. It is a book meant specifically for those dealing with cancer. Fritzy is a young boy whose mom is starting cancer treatment. She has given Fritzy the job of finding a hat each Tuesday for her to wear. He has lots of great ideas, several which aren't realistic, but ends up making a perfect hat himself. Soft and calm, it is realistic without being overly specific.

This is a cute and meaningful children's book. I've always like Scott Hamilton and the way this story relates to his life is special. Also, I had no idea Brad Paisley was such a wonderful illustrator!

Cancer is hard and scary, especially to kids. This book might help talking about a tough topic and that's a very good things. I'm a fan of Scott Hamilton and how lovely that Brad Paisley did the illustrations.

Deeper than an ice skating pond

Very well done. Good message without being beaten over the head.
Great illustrations. I especially liked the mom drawings - very much like I would imagine a real mom would be rather than a June Cleaver mom.
