Her Haunted Heart

Rate this book
WHEN THINGS GO BUMP IN THE NIGHT

When Zelda Shaye inherits the infamous Sazerac House, she immediately senses that something’s not right about the ancient mansion. Strange noises interrupt her sleep, the garbage disposal hates her father, and things move on their own. Her cute nerdy neighbor, Tobe Friedkin, confirms her suspicions when he tells her everyone knows the house is haunted and over the years members of the Sazerac family have suffered mysterious deaths until they were nearly wiped out.

Zelda is the last female descendant to inherit the legacy, and the family curse. Since her parents don't believe her, it’s up to her and Tobe, with the help of the crazy recluse down the street, and a cat named DeLorean, to lay the unquiet spirit to rest before it’s too late.

Horror romance is a genre that sounds amazing to me. And while I enjoyed the first book in this series, I feel like I enjoyed this one less 😬 I felt like in His Final Girl, the romance and horror was better balanced, but the cheesy romance in this one sort of overtook things 😅 But that could just be a me issue though. Lol.

Like I said, I found the romance in this one to be... a lot. And so instalove-y... yuck! And both of the main characters were like this. However, I did love how Tobe told Zelda that he wanted to know her better... on any term she prefers. It was so sweet! I also loved one of the neighbors, an older lady named Edith. She was so sassy, teasing Tobe about his crush on Zelda. It was cute!

As for the horror aspect, it left much to be desired, honestly. At least in the last book we had a fair amount of gore. But here, I feel like we didn’t really get to experience much of the haunted house. How do I explain... Like, I feel like we didn‘t see enough paranormal activity in the house before Zelda decided it was haunted. I just wanted MORE. I was also afraid the source of the haunting would be the cliché and horrible Indian burial ground. It wasn’t, thank god! And it turned out to be something quite interesting...

One thing I like about this series is all the fun horror easter eggs. There were so many, but here are just a couple that caught my eye: A guy named Anson Craven designed Zelda's house (as in Wes Craven).Tobe’s last name Friedkin, is that of the director of The Exorcist. A Rami house was mentioned, as in the director of the Evil Dead. And then Tobe’s grandpa Kramer was named after that one guy from Saw! Lol.

Overall, though, I liked the book... I guess? Like, it wasn’t awful, but I also didn't love it. The romance was a bit much and we didn’t get as much haunted house stuff as I expected, especially in the beginning when Zelda first moved in. Omg and the Epilogue!! I’m generally not a fan of Epilogues as is, but this one in particular was bizarre! But all that being said, I generally enjoyed the book. I got some Fear Street vibes, what with the interconnected stories that take place in the same town and with this seemingly cursed family... Yeah, I’m into that. Lol. Plus we had a brief cameo of the two main characters from the last book, so that was fun. I think I'm going to continue on with the series just because I’m curious and really like the idea of a horror romance. Lol. I just hope those two things are a bit more balanced like they were in book one.

I was actually a little disappointed in HER HAUNTED HEART. Where HIS FINAL GIRL really grabbed on to that nostalgic horror feel, HER HAUNTED HEART just didn’t have it. At the very least what it did have that HFG didn’t was a sex scene that wasn’t squicky. What really killed HFG for me was the overly descriptive underage sex. In HHH, while the lovers were young, they were at least both 18 and out of high school so talk of pressing members and nipples had a much more positive effect this time around.

I just was not connecting with the story. I thought a lot of the horror elements were completely drowned out by the overwhelming number of scenes of Zelda and Tobe just talking to each other and doing research on the house. Not to mention probably half of the ghostly encounters occurred off page or to other characters and recounted in very basic, almost bland, details. And when there were ghosts on page they weren’t malevolent or sinister and were actually the more Casper variety which almost countered the overall mood of the story.

The ending I think was the only real part of the story that was somewhat creepy and somewhat in keeping with the B-movie theme, but it ended too quickly, in my opinion. I would have liked to have seen more of that B-movie creepiness throughout the story.

As for the cats, love the idea in theory. I’m all for injecting a touch more common sense into horror so the characters don’t constantly make boneheaded decisions that get themselves killed. Unfortunately, in practice I feel like the cats blunted the overall effect of the horror. They succeeded in stopping a lot of creepy things from happening to the characters, which resulted in far fewer creepy things to read about.

I liked Tobe and Zelda both as characters. They felt real and fleshed out. Not sure how I felt about the rocket propulsion of their relationship, though. I know this is romantic horror so keeping in mind how romance novels work out. Just the timeline ended up being really short for how intense their love got and how it stayed. Full disclosure, insta-love isn’t my thing to begin with, but at least the individual characters were good.

So overall, eh. Blunted is probably the best word to use for HER HAUNTED HEART. I didn’t feel a lot of heart in this one and the story overall felt really detached. The editing also seemed not up to the same level at HFG, like maybe this book was rushed out before it was really ready. I have HIS SCREAM QUEEN, the next in the series, so I’ll keep reading. I’m hoping it’s a good marriage of the good I’ve seen in the first two books that’ll help to level this series out for me. I’m still a fan of Ann’s writing; it’s just this book was missing . . . something.

Brooklyn Ann's B Mine series is my go-to when I need a break from more serious horror. Which is not to say there aren't some seriously creepy moments in these books!

Each book in the series reads like a 1980s teen horror flick, full of teen angst, steamy sex scenes, and some kind of terrifying enemy that must be faced. These books know they're not elevated literature, and would never take themselves that seriously.

This book, Her Haunted Heart, is easily my favorite in the series. A haunted house, an ancient curse, a whole slew of family ghosts, secret rooms, hidden tragedies, and an evil spirit full of chaos and destruction...nothing that a couple of eighteen year olds can't handle with the help of a library room full of microfiche and a wise and lovable old neighbor lady, right?(All between rounds of sex whenever they can get it, of course.)

These books are pure fun, but also well written, truly scary in parts, and steamy enough to make me wish, briefly, that I was eighteen again.

This is the 2nd book in the B Mine series. I did read the first book, on my own. I liked that the couple from book 1 had a cameo in this book. This book is set in 1981 and reminds me of the Addams Family, Twilight Zone, and any cheesy B rated movie. There's a lot of symbolism throughout the book. Also, a lot of pop culture references for the time. I really loved the older neighbor and all the guardian cats. Essentially Zelda inherits a haunted mansion. Her next door neighbor, Tobe, is obsessed with the house and also starts to like Zelda. Zelda and Tobe work together to figure out what made the house haunted and why they see ghosts. Zelda and Tobe are nerdy but right for each other. This book is more a haunting/mystery and much less killing than the first book. Expect: Paranormal romance, supernatural horror, horror, 1980's, haunted house, ghost romance, nerd romance, cinnamon roll hero, mature themes, and new adult romance.

This is a well written book with strong characters and an interesting storyline. The author brings an intriguing story with an eighteen year old inheriting a haunted mansion. Enter the boy next door who's always loved the house. I loved how the author builds their story with the research of the house and all the happenings they discover. She moves the story fluidly and delivers a terrific story.

A beautiful young woman moves into a haunted house. Across the street from a young man who has been studying the house. This story was well written and I enjoyed it. Story had an 80s vibe to it which was an extra bonus.

This might be my favorite of the B-Mine series. A haunted house, loads of ghosts, a demon, and plenty of unexplained death. Sounds perfect!

Thank You, Brooklyn Ann

This was a Cozy Horror Romance Mystery Solving novel. Zelda inherits a ancestry family house with a very Dark Pass and A Family Curse. The House was built by a Carpenter with the sur name of Krueger
(Easter Egg 🥚 Freddy Krueger) and a Classic Car traps demon 😈 ( Easter Egg [in my opinion/] Christine). Read how the curser was resolv. Is the demon just waiting for the right moment to escape his imprisonment.

I Recommend this book to those who enjoy Mild Horror with Moderate Romance.

OMG I LOVE THIS BOOK

This is a story of a 18 yr old girl named Zelda who inherited a mansion from detcedent's of her family that put in the will the eldest daughter gets the house, well the house is haunted. The boy next door has loved the house since he was 10 and he is 19 now and Tobe and Zelda meet and have alot in common and fall in love. They research the house and find out about the deaths, suicide, and missing ppl that have come before Zelda. There is a dark entity in the house and Zelda fears for her family's safety so her and Tobe are trying to get rid of this entity they also have an elderly neighbor Mrs . Waters that knows all the crazy things that have gone on at the house. Of course I have to say this is another excellent amazing read, I started today and finished it this morning because I couldn't put it down, it's that great, the ending will blow you away because it gives you a clue to another book this writer writes.
