Η Ματού, μένει στην Πιγιόμ, λίγο έξω από το Πάρισι, με την οικογένειά της.

Γυρίζει καθημερινά περπατώντας από το σχολείο, και μια μέρα παρατηρεί έξω από το Τζαμί της πόλης, πάρα πολλά παπούτσια. Η Ματού φτιάχνει ένα δικό της, καινούργιο παιχνίδι, δοκιμάζοντας κάθε μέρα και ένα άλλο ζευγάρι.
Με αυτόν το πειραματισμό θα μάθει, θα αρχίσει να νοιώθει πώς είναι να μπαίνεις στα παπούτσια, καμιά φορά και στη θέση, του άλλου.

Τα παπούτσια των άλλων είναι ένα τρυφερό βιβλίο για την ενσυναίσθηση και την αμοιβαία κατανόηση από την Άλκηστη Χαλικιά, συγγραφέα του βιβλίου Το κουτί του Σιλάν, με την ιδιαίτερη εικονογράφηση της Φωτεινής Τίκκου, που εγκαινιάζει την συνεργασία της με τις εκδόσεις Ίκαρος.

Η Ματού, μένει στην Πιγιόμ, 23 χιλιόμετρα από το Πάρισι, αλλά όχι ΣΤΟ Παρίσι με τους γονείς της. Γυρίζει καθημερινά περπατώντας από το σχολείο μόνη, στο άδειο σπίτι μια και οι δικοί της δουλεύουν. Μια μέρα παρατηρεί έξω από το Τζαμί της πόλης ένα ξεχωριστό θέαμα: πάρα πολλά ζευγάρια παπούτσια· και εντυπωσιάζεται. Η Ματού, λοιπόν, φτιάχνει ένα δικό της, καινούργιο, διασκεδαστικό παιχνίδι, δοκιμάζοντας κρυφά κάθε μέρα και ένα άλλο ζευγάρι και προσπαθώντας να φανταστεί ποιος είναι ο κάτοχός του.

Μια μέρα θυμώνει με τη μαμά της. Η καθεμιά έχει το δίκιο της. Η Ματού θα στενοχωρηθεί. Κι εκεί που το χάσμα μεταξύ τους μοιάζει αγεφύρωτο, η μαμά τής ζητά «να μπει στα παπούτσια της». Η Ματού τα χάνει. Τη ρωτά τι είπε. Η μαμά της εξηγεί ότι η έκφραση «μπαίνω στα παπούτσια του άλλου» σημαίνει μεταφορικά να μπαίνεις στη θέση του. Κι έτσι, η Ματού, για πρώτη φορά ίσως, μπαίνει κυριολεκτικά, καταρχάς, και μεταφορικά, έπειτα, στα παπούτσια της μαμάς της. Το παιχνίδι της αποδεικνύεται πολύ χρήσιμο για να καταλάβει τον δύσκολο κόσμο των μεγάλων. Και καταλαβαίνει πολλά!

Η Άλκηστη Χαλικιά συλλαμβάνει μια πανέξυπνη ιδέα, χρησιμοποιεί το λογοπαίγνιο/ξενισμό που τα τελευταία χρόνια έχει αρχίσει να εντάσσεται και στη γλώσσα μας μέσω της θεωρίας της ενσυναίσθησης και δημιουργεί μέσα από την πρωτότυπη ιστορία της Ματού μια γέφυρα αλληλοκατανόησης μεταξύ γονιών και παιδιών, που μεταφέρει σε κάθε αναγνώστη ένα δυνατό μήνυμα αισιοδοξίας και αποδοχής, φωτίζοντας έτσι τη μοναδικότητα της γονεϊκής-παιδικής σχέσης. Παράλληλα, η συγγραφέας μιλάει για την πολυπολιτισμικότητα ως κάτι εντελώς φυσιολογικό, για την αποδοχή του Άλλου, για τις δυσκολίες της παιδικής ηλικίας που τείνει προς την εφηβεία και για την πάντα απαραίτητη φιλία με έναν υπέροχο και πολύ γλυκό τρόπο.

Εξαιρετική και ιδιαίτερη η εικονογράφηση της Φωτεινής Τίκκου, αρωγός στο κείμενο, που θα δώσει αφορμή σε μικρούς και μεγάλους για αναζητήσεις πάνω στο χαρτί, ουσιαστικές συζητήσεις και πολύ παιχνίδι! «Τα παπούτσια των άλλων» μόλις κυκλοφόρησαν από τις εκδόσεις Ίκαρος, συστήνονται για παιδιά από 3 ετών, αλλά είναι αυτό που {αυθαίρετα} λέμε κατάλληλο -μην πω επιβεβλημένο- ανάγνωσμα για παιδιά από 3 έως… 103.

Very beautiful illustration, clever and original. I found the text a bit on the didactic side and I don't like that very much, I prefer things to be implied rather than said explicitly. However, it will be very useful for me as a teacher when I explain the Enlish phrase "get in somebody's shoes".

A little girl notices shoes sitting outside the mosque on her walk home from school every day and starts trying on different pairs to try and guess what the person who wears them is like. One day there is a misunderstanding with her mom and she has to try and "walk in someone else's shoes" to try and have compassion for the situation. This book flopped for me in several ways. First, I didn't love that she was sitting and trying on people's shoes while they were in the mosque. Second, trying on the shoes and judging what the people were like felt like the opposite of trying to teach empathy and compassion by not judging a person on their looks alone. And finally, the ultimate lesson the book is trying to teach fell flat because the cognitive jump it required wasn't clear.

Curiosity leads a little girl living just outside Paris to walk a little bit in others’ shoes, including those of her mother, providing her with a window into their lives and individual situations as she finds the value in empathy by putting herself into their positions. A fascinating combination of collage with photography and digital tools provides the reader with a beautiful juxtaposition of imagery that feels very fitting with the story.

Idioms and oddly charming turns of phrases are probably the hardest part about learning a new language. In this appealing picture book, the protagonist, Matou, takes the phrase "step into my shoes for a moment" quite literally, and she actually does that, slipping into her hard-working mother's shoes. But this special moment of awareness requires a build-up that comes earlier in the story. Matou, who lives outside Paris, and has to walk to and from school by herself due to her mother's work schedule, sees several pairs of shoes outside the mosque on her way home. She decides to try on different shoes each day, trying to guess what their owners look like. When she skips her usual guessing game on the day her mother has promised an outing and ice cream, she becomes angry when her mother's work prevents her from being able to keep her promise. In an attempt to help her daughter see how difficult the choice had been, her mother had used the aforementioned idiom. Finally, when Matou realizes what it feels like to be in her mother's shoes or situation. The ending is a bit anticlimactic, but still, this story carries an important message about empathy. The eye-appealing digital artwork, created with photography and collage, uses soft colors, pretty patterns, expressive faces, and quite a few shoes. This one would be useful in a classroom lesson on empathy.

Step Into My Shoes by @lantana_publishing @alkistishalikia @fotinitikkouillustration is a fascinating, relatable, heartfelt, exploratory, and important read! This beautiful book focuses on individual life experiences, assumptions, and empathy. Everyone has heard the some version of "take a walk in my shoes" and this book literally takes the reader on rather journey. A young girl tries on other individuals shoes and tries to guess what their life is like based off their shoes. Her observations are often correct. However, it isn't until she steps into the shoes of someone she knows and loves that she truly understands empathy.

A girl tries on shoes outside a mosque for fun(!?) and that teaches her a lesson about walking in others shoes and to give her working mom a break. Honestly this book did not sit well with me. I was thinking it was going to be a story about how the girl gets to know the Muslims at the Mosque and learns something valuable. No. She just creepy tried on the peoples shoes and then uses that to try on her moms shoes after getting mad at her for working late. A jab to the working moms. I don't know I just didn't like it.

This is a great multicultural book that will fascinate preschool and kindergarten children. I’ve never read anything like it before, and I’m impressed. However, towards the end of the book, the storytelling seemed to drop off and get jumpy. I’m a little disappointed because I was expecting this great story to be fantastic.
