Dakkon’s in trouble. Things have gone horribly wrong. But, so long as there’s still a glimmer of hope, it’s not too late, is it? With such high stakes, failure isn’t an option. He’s got to stay crisp. Frosty. Focused. Dakkon needs luck, skill, and a meteoric rise in power, however success won’t come so easily. Nature is cruel. Predators come in all shapes and sizes, especially when the land is warped by magic. Everything rests on Dakkon’s shoulders now, but perhaps someone can tell him: Elves. Why must they all be so damned uppity?
For years I’ve been a massive fan of the LitRPG genre. Initially, I devoured the few books available in English and sought more content in episodic fan translations. Now, finally, the genre is starting to rapidly grow. I love how authors manipulate progression. There’s something wonderful about being presented with a mold, only to see it broken and surpassed.
I’ve always been drawn to stories that work to build a stable world then, once norms are established, begin to rock the boat in a big way. The first book in my series aims to establish this world boat, while offering glimpses beyond the horizon. I sincerely hope you enjoy it.
This third book in Kevin Murphy's Chronicle LitRPG series turned out to be a bit of a flop for me. I'm not quite sure what went wrong! I read the first two books in this series about a year ago but have to admit that I jumped into this third instalment of the series blind as I recall next to nothing about the happenings of the first few books in the series. I guess that in itself was a sign that this series was not a particularly memorable one.
I recall the first two books in the series as being enjoyable reads that were nothing overly special or exciting. Unfortunately this third book did not match those standards. I found the happenings a bit dull and boring. Dakkon is a likeable enough lead character but I was just never given any real reason to invest in his adventures as most of the happenings felt like they had no actual stakes. It was just a VR world to Dakkon and even if he died he just re-spawned. That fact resulted in most of his adventures feeling like filler and a waste of time.
It is a shame really as I do feel like this LitRPG world has some interesting components but that they get pushed to the side far too often so time can be dedicated to filler quests and battles with no stakes on the line. As with the previous books we get tantalising hints that the sci-fi real world Dakkon lives in is probably a far more interesting place than the VR world where this story spends 99% of its time.
I think I'm probably done with this series. There was nothing terrible or offensive about this series but it is also just not holding my attention so even finishing this instalment became a bit of a chore in the end. I think the LitRPG genre on the whole has an issue with series being unable to keep me invested in the long haul as I dump a lot of series after the second or third book even when I've actually enjoyed the first book in the series. The Chronicle series is the latest victim of slumping LitRPG series quality!
Rating: 2.5 stars. Nothing terrible here but it was so dull I struggled to make it to the end.
Audio Note: As always Nick Podehl did a great job with the audio.
I really enjoyed the first 2 books. This one was just ok.
The premise that we were left at the end of the second book was all about Cline's return from death and for the large majority of the story, this just gets lip-service.
The fun part of the previous books was the party. Multiple characters working together to get to where they wanted to go. We don't get anything like that this time around. There's even a specific time where the main character single handedly takes down a raid boss. While interesting for what it was, and being a good use of mechanics, this isn't why I was reading this series.
The story is mostly unrelated to the main premise of the book and too slow paced, too expanded in some parts. Dakkon most of the time didn't seem to be concerned about Clien unless he remembers his purpose of this journey by casually mentioning "oh yes, Clien is dead, I have to hurry". The last part with the sea was totally unnecessary and didn't do anything for the story. Otherwise the story was interesting. Not as good as the first two in my opinion (but that may be because I listened for the first two on Audible).
The most triggering thing for me was the use of the word "though"; The author should use some synonyms... There were sentences where this word was used 2 times. There were parts where the word was repeated in 3 sentences in a row. In my opinion, it is just too much and as a writer, he can and should do better.
To all those who want to continue the story, I suggest sticking with audiobook instead. It will be much more interesting and less triggering.
Okay, I'm officially a Kevin Murphy fan! What a series! This is rapidly building into a saga to rival LOTR! Mr Murphy is a Hell of a good universe builder. If you've read books 1 and 2, this won't disappoint.
Was really happy to find book three. A good continuation of the series. A bit of a uptick in the power scale byt handled alright. Should be good to see more!
It doesn’t take itself too seriously. The series seems to be continuously evolving the power growth to be both subtle and powerful when used in creative ways as well as bonanza loot drops. I Look forward to more.
Im always concerned with the litRPG genre but the chronicle series has ben consistently great. Well worth a read, its an exciting series and manages to not kill you with stat blocks.
What a way for the story to continue. Fallon has really fallen into it now, and he and his crew are hard pressed to stay alive. Hope they have some luck on their side...
The author writes a good story with interesting uses of magic and abilities, the loot has good qualities and i like the openness of uses in the system. This story continued nicely and im excited to see what comes next
I'm looking forward to the next installment of this series. Great world building continues and the main plot is definitely thickening. I hope Dakkon can keep luck on his side!
I read this with a large gap between 2 and 3. However, I was still able to jump back in and enjoy how the plot developed. Fun twists and turns, and interesting characters.
It was an incredibly entertaining read, and obviously well planned out. I highly recommend it to RPG fanatics, if the future of videogames keeps going as it is then this could very well be the sort of thing we get in 50 years or less if technology makes some leaps. It did take me a while to read it but that is not the fault of the book, it was more life getting in the way. My only reason for this not getting five stars is that the world outside the game seems incredibly interesting and any little tidbits of it are just not enough to satisfy curiosity. I would love to see more of that explored in the next book whenever Mr Murphy gets to writing it. Which I suppose I should not chastise him for because my own project has sat on a shelf for a while.
The first two books were good. I liked the companionship and the travelling and the adventures...but this book. Hmmm...I'm 11 hours through a 13-1/2 hour book, read by the insurmountable Nick Podehl, and I'm having trouble not throwing it at the wall.
Dakkon gets all these cool toys in a dungeon then goes lame dark-side, sacrificing an NPC to get power to save Klein (Cline?), then turns into a douche...its like someone took over the writing and didn't understand Dakkon's personality. Or, of course, perhaps his personality is being influenced by a magic he's absorbed...i dunno. Even if this resolves towards something...there is no excuse for abandoning the Old Man and his dog.
Hopefully I'll be back with a positive edit shortly.
Good book the only thing that was annoying is that the MC can still get his ass handed to him even after getting a super op boost to his stats and level on top of the super op armour, which kind of contradicts a review I saw earlier plus he got a bunch of opportunityes to get even more super op but I doubt that would have helped much against his enemies
This story was good. However, the story is not finished with this book, and it has been several years since this book was written. Based on when the author last released something, it does not look to me like the series will ever be finished. I am guessing the author either is sick of writing, is major having writer's block, or is physically incapable of writing.
Started off pretty slow, but turned out great. I think this book was a set of several random adventures with multiple characters peppered in. It felt like 3 episodes of a TV show bundles together. Each could have been its own book. That being said, it was so entertaining. Not AMAZING, but good.
I had to reread the series since it was a while since I read book 2. Good thing I did or else I probably wouldn't have enjoyed the book nearly half as much as I did. Great series, and a great book 3.
