Charlie loves Courtney, Courtney loves herself and Isla; Charlie's ex, has fallen in love with him all over again. Charlie loves Isla in a different way, Courtney loves the idea of the former lover's getting together, whereas Rose loves Charlie in a completely different way too. Rose is Isla's best friend and loves everyone, Courtney only loves the idea of Charlie and Isla getting together, then Vanessa hates Charlie with a passion. Vanessa is Courtney's best friend, Vanessa has one of those love to hate relationships with Charlie - Charlie ends up having to love and accept all four of them to survive.
This story is a little more than a comedy, or a simple tale of another love triangle gone wrong. If you take one love triangle, add it together with another one, then place those triangle's together, what you form is a diamond. Charlie loves Courtney, Courtney loves herself and Charlie is one diamond in the rough, ready to face really tough times ahead and take on the complicated die-angle fivesome.
I thought books written about love triangles were confusing enough, but with four women in his life, Charlie certainly had it tough. A great comedy, with all the usual Tudeski twists, turns and adult fun, then an extra bit of mayhem thrown on top.
Because I've read every book he's released, Jimmy Tudeski kindly lets me read his books weeks before release for an honest review. Complicated is no different from what he's released before in comparison of being funny and an extremely fast and entertaining read.
The book starts by introducing you to Charlie, a man happy in his relationship with his beautiful girlfriend and he is head over heels in love with her. Things quickly go wrong when Courtney (his girlfriend) meets up with an old friend from school and everything soon spirals downhill fast. This friend isn't just an old school friend to Courtney, but oblivious to all of them from the first meeting, she's also Charlie's ex. As you can imagine, when Isla (the ex) lies about knowing him, things get very complicated.
What Jimmy does in this book is not settle on the confusion and comedy this situation alone would normally bring, but use his imagination to throw plenty of spanners in the works too. A Stalker, a crazy best friend and a baby is involved in this fast paced read, where it not only gets complicated for him, yet gets a little complicated for a reader too (trying to keep up with it all) It's a funny book, not as funny as some other Tudeski books, but it's definitely worth a read.
Five books into my reading of Jimmy Tudeski comedies, I still search for that five star book written by him. I fully enjoy his adult humor and the mucky things his character get up to, but one or two things seem to go wrong during the writing of his books, that aren't that bad, but just fail to nail that top spot for me.
This book, his latest offering, failed. Once again, the comedy aspect of the writing, second to none. The storyline, perfectly set up for a comedy of this nature. What this one lacked? Nothing. It actually did too much yet again. The four women in his life would have been good enough for this comedy to be funny alone. The search for a woman who had given birth to his child in his past, whilst trying to please the four women in his life, not needed.
Jimmy Tudeski is by far the funniest, most controversial and outrageous comedy writer I've had the pleasure of reading, yet until he stops trying too hard to please his readers, I'm never going to find those five stars I so desperately want to give him.
I have read quite a few Tudeksi comedies over the last few months and despite this one not improving on anything else he's done before now, it maintains a very high standard of fast paced rudeness and comedy. Charlie is just a normal guy and Charlie must juggle four woman at the same time, and try to keep them all happy. No, it's not a cheap comedy that plays out a male writers fantasy of having more than one woman on paper, but his character's struggle to live with his adventurous girlfriend, his ex, her friend and his girlfriends best friend all in the same area. As usual, it's a chaotic Tudeski comedy, full of clever wit and mayhem. I enjoyed it, I laugh at parts in it, but I just wanted a little more than the Two and a half men spin-off it felt like.
A book and a very funny story that was simply let down by its character choice of names. It's not hard to work out that this author is a fan of "Two and a half men" considering characters names in this book include Charlie, Courtney & Herb. The book itself was very funny and took on many comical twists right up until the end, but again I couldn't escape visioning it how it should have played out on screen. I think this should come out of the comedy genre and be placed straight into the parody one. This would seem more fitting for a book clearly not copying a storyline of any kind, but definitely a parody/spin off of the show.
I am a huge fan of Two And A Half Men and neither was I offended by the characters names in this book, or put off by it in any way. This if anything, let those characters live on once again, yet if Jimmy did want to write a TAAHM spin-off, then Ashton Kutcher's name would have been a more updated version of the show, which I think he would have used. This character wasn't in it the book at all.
I think what we have here is a true fan in Jimmy himself of the show, writing a bran-new comedy about a man caught up in a huge love triangle, using his favourite character to get the job done. It worked for me and it would work for many other TAAHM fans I know.
I've heard the comparisons made to an American TV programme, but personally I've never seen it. What I read was very funny and highly entertaining. Charlie gets himself into all kinds of sh£t (a controlling girlfriend, a demanding ex and a secret baby) All hell breaks loose when it turns out they all know each-other in secret, then in comes a few other characters (another ex and the other ex's partner) It's messy, it's complicated, it's life and love in comedy form delivered perfectly.
This book would have been so much better if someone got killed or murdered during it. I mainly read dark books and although I know this author can write dark comedy, this wasn't one that stood out for me. It lacked depth and it certainly lacked originality. It was like watching a show on television that you've never seen, yet you still feel like you have seen it a million times already.
It seemed the comedy was there for all to see, yet I still struggled to come to terms with the British and American comedy brought together in a book. It was as though I was reading an American style comedy, yet full of British slag. The story was okay and definitely "Complicated" to follow, I just wished I could follow it all.
Poor man!! Charlie really did have it tough, didn't he? I was expecting so much more from this book, especially after enjoying a few others books from this author, but I didn't. Yes, it was funny, yes it had it's classical comedy moments, but nothing special regarding the storyline. I guessed half way through who's baby it was.
Jimmy has a very special way of writing books that are not only very funny, but books that make you think and mess with your head. This book about another disfunctional man and set of relationships was very entertaining, but nothing compared to his Battersea Parker series.
The only way I can describe this book is call it a Two And A Half Men spin-off or parody. All the main characters were involved and the same adult humour entertained throughout. Luckily I liked this sitcom when it was on TV, but this is definitely not Jimmy Tudeski's finest hour.
I thought this book was great. It was slightly confusing to follow in places, but I guess that's where it gets its title Complicated from. Its funny because I'm sure I've been in one of these messy triangles myself before.
It's a simple enough read with a semi interesting plot. Nothing particularly special. A little annoyed with some of the writing style (the constant self questions) but otherwise a short and simple read.
Far too many books take life to seriously these days. I Found this book to be light hearted, fun and very easy to read. Very funny in places, then some very predictable material.
It was better than Battersea Parker 2, that was really horrible. The story was fun and very short, perfect for a summer read. I did not laugh, but I did smile occasionally.
The group of characters could've been more diverse (there was only one male after all), but the female characters did at the least get more "screen-time" than Sally in the sequel of Battersea Parker. I really liked Rose and I wanted more of Vanessa, Isle was really great and smart, Courtney seemed just like a side character just to get the story along and not very smart.
The were some unnecessary chapters, like the one where Charlie seeks the mother of his daughter and his last argument with Courtney in which he doesn't tell her that he has a daughter for some reason and they bickered the whole night without mentioning it? These two sections where quite long and in the end they did not mattered. All I'm saying it could've been done better, maybe even expanded the story or I d0n't know, given Courtney more of a chance to show her intelligence or something.
All in all, an unoffensive summer read, I do recommend it, I only wish the authors covers weren't so eeh.
