Europa 28: Writing by Women on the Future of Europe

Rate this book
A being from another time and planet visits Earth, and takes human form for one year, as a European...

A young woman’s tyrannical father has arranged her marriage to an influential suitor, but a mythical bull from her dreams comes to her rescue...

A group of students in Tallinn’s Freedom Square imagine where the rise in right-wing fascism may have taken Europe by 2050...

With so many flare-ups of nationalism and isolationism in recent years, there is a sense that Europe needs to be fixed, or, at the very least, profoundly reconfigured; whether it is to address the grievances of those feeling disenfranchised from it, or to improve social cohesion, or even continue to exist as a democratic transnational entity.

Bringing together 28 acclaimed women writers, artists, scientists and entrepreneurs from across Europe, this powerful and timely anthology looks at an ever-changing Europe from a variety of different perspectives and offers hope and insight into how we might begin to rebuild.

Zo svojich rôznych perspektív vyzdvihujú myšlienky jednoty a súdržnosti, zdieľania a empatie.

A rather unique literary project that brings together female voices from across the working landscape and from each of the European countries. They are each tasked with working out an idea of a future Europe. You have everyone from filmmakers, actors, data analysts, economists, social activists, writers, poets, translators, historians, anthropologists and journalists, which gives the whole project a really polyphonic perspective.

That is also a tiny issue with the book. With so many wide and varied voices quality control is always going to be a bit of an issue. There are definitely some entries that I found less interesting than others, but, even then, that was a fairly modest amount.

I would recommend the book for Asja Bakic's moving piece of sci-fi alone. I was also grateful to be acquainted with the likes of Lisa Dwan, Ana Pessoa and Karolina Ramqvist for the first time. Each of their pieces left a mark. When you consider there are already excellent pieces in the book from the likes of established international names, such as Leila Slimani, Hilary Cottam and Kapka Kassabova, then the pros almost certainly outweigh the cons. Also, I must commend some excellent translation work, especially from Saskia Vogel and Jennifer Croft.

A wonderful collection of writing from women from each of the 28 EU member states. These writings take a critical, and sometimes difficult to swallow, look at the reality of Europe as it is today. As difficult as it is to face reality through these texts, they do also offer a solution to us. They're a call to action for change within our society. And leaves us with the question: what will become of Europe?

28 women from each 28 EU countries write an essay about their own view on the future of Europe.

These essays come in all shapes and colours: fictional stories with underlying messages, plays, personal experiences, stories from people that no longer can tell their own story...

I personally loved some essays and hated others but all of them made me think. I guess this was the aim of the book.

In a collection there are naturally going to be essays and stories that resonate, and others less so. As a whole I thought this was an excellent collection. The essays cover a wide range of subjects from fairy tales and myths, to politics, feminism, the digital age and more. Reading perspectives from women across Europe was enlightening. I particularly recommend the essays by Kapka Kassabova (Bulgaria), Leila Slimani (France), Lisa Dwan (Ireland) Zyudrune Vitalie (Lithuania) and Caroline Muscat (Malta). All these women, and the others not mentioned, force the reader to confront Europe's problems and now it might move forward to all our benefits. Women's voices are often excluded from the debate on Europe and, as a British citizen who voted Remain and is strongly pro-EU and Europe (for all its shortcomings) this is a timely and important book.

This is a brilliant @hayfestival project that brought women's voices from every European country together with force, kindness and purpose.

It includes passionate essays, personal accounts as well as stunning imagery about our dear Europe. The theories and stories come with so many voices and forms that it's an intriguing read. For me, this blended effort was the most powerful element - like Europe, this book does not have just one story and the effect of the whole is stunning.

I loved it, I felt none of the writers skimmed over the flaws, they detailed them but balanced with joyous feelings of hope, strength, creativity and resilience. For me, Janne Teller's 'My Dream for Europe', although the most fanciful provided such a glittering image it's stuck in my head.
