Soul Burn is not one story by two authors but two novellas (one by each author) with both similarities and differences. They’re both BDSM erotic romances with one of the main characters a shifter.

In Shifting Flames, by Brenda Murphy, Celeste Quon is a recluse writer with a reputation for being difficult who has agreed to work with a screenwriter to bring her bestseller to the screen. Eve Perez is struggling after her ex stole her work and ruined her reputation. When they meet, sparks fly, each recognizing the need and desire in the other.

The Fire Inside, by Megan Hart, brings the reader right into the action, where Selena is being beaten by Clara. Selena uses pain to ward off orgasms. That’s her hard limit: she doesn’t want to climax. Clara is a very precise and conscientious Domme, and senses there’s more to that hard limit than Selena lets on.

What I found most interesting is that both shifters are submissive but while Celeste thrives on the shift and loves the thrill and pain of becoming her tiger, Selena fights her wolf with fervour.

I’m beginning to know what to expect from Murphy’s books: solid writing, intense characters, steam. I got all that with Shifting Flames, but it felt a little short and rushed at times (novellas…). Hart is new to me, and I liked her story a lot. Sure it’s extremely sexy but it’s the love and understanding that get to me. The two stories complement each other really well, and it’s fascinating to see how the same ingredients can result in very different tales.

I received a copy from the publisher and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

Soul Burn gives us two novellas by two authors. Shifting Flames by Megan Hart and The Fire Inside by Brenda Murphy have similarities – both are domme/sub relationships where the subs are shifters.

”A mistress, a werewolf, a screenwriter and a shapeshifter walk into your heart in these two sexy paranormal stories of love and redemption.”

In Shifting Flames we have screenwriter Eve Perez, ousted by the industry because of a scandal so she really needs this job. She agrees to take on a time-sensitive (and rather fraught) project to work with recluse writer Celeste Quon, known to be very difficult. In Celeste’s very secluded compound, a winter storm keeps both women in close quarters. Eve discovers Celeste’s dark secret.

In The Fire Inside, mistress Clara is doling out all the pain her submissive client Selena can handle. And she can handle a lot. Selena needs the pain to keep her wolf at bay but she can’t ever climax because then it would be all for naught. Clare knows Selene is on the verge of losing it and intrigued, she is on a mission to get to the center of this.

Both stories were full on BDSM, so it really needs to have your interest if you want to enjoy these erotic novellas. Both authors were new to me but I liked their style. It was intense, solidly written and very sexy.

f/f exlicit BDSM, flogging, edging

Themes: shapeshifters, dommes and submissives, a cabin in the woods, letting your inner beast free.

I’ve read a number of novels by Murphy and only one by Hart but I enjoy the way both authors write. Both novellas have shifters and BDSM in common but they’re quite different stories.

Shifting Flames by Brenda Murphy

A bestselling but difficult, reclusive author, Celeste Quon, has given in to the pressure to have one of her novels adapted for the big screen but only if she has full control. Eve Perez finds herself driving into the remote area in a snowstorm because, while this may be the only job she can get, it may be the job to restore her reputation.

There is quite a bit of scope in this story line for quite an intricate and powerful novella but some of the better arcs were left untouched in favour of more sex. Hard to believe I’m saying this, because Murphy writes some very hot scenes, but I think there were too many. Eve’s reputation issue could have been used more and Celeste’s shifter story could have been given more light. It’s still a pretty good story though.

The Fire Inside by Megan Hart

Clara is a professional domme who enjoys her work. Until Selena, that is. Selena hires Clara for the pain, but none of the pleasure and it intrigues her at first, then begins to worry her.

I enjoyed this story very much. It looks at the shifter from a different point of view as well as having an unusual dominance and submission relationship. If people are going to profess their undying love to each other I prefer them to have had a few meaningful conversations first but I realise that not all readers want that from story.

Both are well worth reading.

Brenda Murphy's latest is actually a duology which she collaborated with a fellow author, Megan Hart, with their own unique story to tell. I had read some outline of Murphy's story, "Shifting Flames," which she so generously shared when it was still work-in-progress and I was intrigued by the dynamic between the two MCs in a particular situation under a precarious environment. Anyway, so I was looking forward to reading the entire story altogether. However, I had never heard of Megan Hart before. So this duology was as good an opportunity as any, for me to explore Hart's writing and storytelling, with her story, "The Fire Inside."

"Shifting Flames" and "The Fire Inside" were two separate stories but in the same genre - urban fantasy. Yup, shape-shifters. First off, I love urban fantasy especially when it comes to shape-shifters, werewolves, vampires, and the lot. That said, what was unique about this urban fantasy-themed duology was that both stories were structured in the world of BDSM. Yup, I must say, I'd never encountered this original blend of urban fantasy with BDSM as the sub-genre before until now. So, apart from having the opportunity to explore these two genres together as one, my curiosity was piqued. I was intrigued by just how Murphy and Hart would craft their stories with the nature of shape-shifters as their main backdrop of their BDSM-focussed romance. Let's just say, by the end of each presented story, I was impressed by the amount of effortlessness in telling a proper romance with the "added" ingredient. I was fully invested in the dynamic of the MCs, in their respective journeys of love, truth and reconciliation and letting go.

Seductive, Sexy and Sublime
This book contains two stories written by excellent writers. Shifting Flames is written by Brenda Murphy. In this story Eve, a screenwriter who was involved in a scandal has a second chance if she can work with the reclusive and hard to work with author, Celeste. Celeste has a massive secret, and after the two become emotionally and physically entangled, she decided to show Eve and hope for the best… This is a wonderful story full of sexy bits and romance. It is delicious and divine and I loved it all.
The second story is The Fire Inside by Megan Hart. Clara is a Domme whose client Selena, is into extreme pain and her hard limit is not having an orgasm. Despite being attracted to each other they keep it strictly professional, until they just can’t and when Clara discovers why Selena doesn’t want to orgasm, she surprises Selena with tenderness and love. This appears to be the first F/F story published by Ms Hart but it is a good one. I liked how the emotions ran high and the Domme/sub aspect was lovely! Clara is wonderful and so supportive and calms the skittish Selena, bringing to her a sense of peace and lightens her heavy heart. The ending could not have been more perfect!
I highly recommend reading this book and think you will love it as much as I did.

4 stars in all. There are 2 novellas in this book, both shapeshifter stories. The first one was written by Brenda Murphy. This one was about a 3.5 stars for me. It was well written but there was a lot of sex with a storyline that was a little too thin for my taste. Still it was an okay read.
I liked the Second novella by Megan Hart more. This one also was well written and erotic story, but it had a lot more romance and build up of the relationship and happy ending. This story was a 4 star for me.
The book as a whole comes rounded up to 4 stars.

Let me start by saying I love reading about shifters, erotica and BDSM. Soul Burn tends to all those favourites so it is safe to say I loved reading this book. When this is your guilty pleasure too, please don't hesitate to pick this one up, you will enjoy.
The book contains two stories/novellas: Shifting Flames (Brenda Murphy) and The Fire Inside (Megan Hart).

I’m familiar with Murphy’s work and she never fails to satisfy my kink. And after reading Harts novella I'm able to say I like her writing style and she also is very able to write down a good story with satisfying scenes.
Because these are novellas, I didn’t expect too deep soul searching but was pleasantly surprised that I did find it in both novella's (a little more in Harts book). For the short time the authors had, they made it work great. In both stories, I found a little suspense, lots of sexy scenes and both provided well on an emotional level.

Shifting Flames: When reading Celeste’s first scene in the novella, she handles as a ruthless killer. At first, I was taken aback, but the reason why made me forgive her quickly.
Reading about the physical differences between Eve and Celeste I would have guessed the domme-sub roles being the other way around. So thank you, Murphy, for slapping my fingers on labelling people. The play in this part of the book is - in my opinion - milder than the Harts story. If you don't scare easily it is suitable for readers who haven't read BDSM before.

As for Harts part of the book - The Fire Inside - is a little more rough play, which is a necessity for Selena. All will be clear when you read this book, so don't let me spoil it for you. This was - for me - the first time to read about a submissive who didn't need the submissive part, but more the pain part. And although that may sound weird, it did give the book more depth. Also in this part of the book labels are not what they seem. Due to a lack of trust in herself, the power of shifting is what makes Selena weak.

Both enjoyable and sexy reads.

The first line of the blurb could not be more apt....
A mistress, a werewolf, a screenwriter and a shapeshifter walk into your heart in these two sexy paranormal stories of love and redemption.
These stories are different but similar. How so? Both have shifters, an aspect of each story that's beautifully done.

And both have off the charts, sizzling heat. More than I expected, but not unwanted.

I've read my share of books with BDSM, ranging from mild kink to total power exchange. I'm no expert on the topic, but there's nothing mild about the power exchange in these stories.

Celeste is an engaging character, in and out of her tiger form. And, although Selena fights to contain her inner wolf, my heart soared when she was finally able to run free.

Hart and Murphy are two very talented authors, and, for me, these stories did not disappoint. Whether BDSM is your thing or not, if you enjoy (lesbian) shifter stories, I urge you to give it a go.

This is a really interesting book - in a good way! To clarify it is a duo of novellas, (not as I first thought a novel written by two authors) featuring kinky shapeshifters and bdsm sex. If this is something you like to read you're in luck because well written lesfic with a D/s dynamic is a rare beast. As for the shapeshifting, even if you think it's not your scene don't let that put you off; Soul Burn's tales deal with that issue in a completely different way to the more 'traditional' lesfic supernatural/werewolf genre.

Brenda Murphy's "Shifting Flames" shows many of the hallmarks of an old school gothic tale; Eve Perez has been shunned by society, (well the screenwriting world anyway, after her ex falsely accused her of plagiarising her work) and so is forced to travel to rural Colorado in the depths of winter to meet with reclusive horror writer, Celeste Quon. As we soon discover, Celeste hasn't left her mountain home and its extensive lands in years for...reasons. Continuing on the Gothic theme, Eve's rental car crashes on a mountain road when she has to avoid a sheep that ran into her path, leaving her at the mercy of the elements. When Eve finally arrives at Celeste's the games begin. Celeste should be all powerful; she is the shifter, the author of the book who has chased away countless other screenwriters and she has final say over the script, they are in her house. From the off, however, Celeste feels a powerful urge to submit to Eve which is in direct conflict with her deep set self-preservation instincts.

I really enjoyed "Shifting Flames" but I would have loved to have seen it in a longer format. The ending in particular was jolting and seemed rushed, perhaps a product of the novella style.

"The Fire Inside", by Megan Hart moves the action to the city and a professional domme and her client. Again, thankfully, there were no werewolf gang wars or elaborate pack ceremonies to deal with. Instead this story focuses on Selena who uses the pleasure/pain dynamic as a way of keeping her beast in check. Their relationship is very cute as it develops, each eyeing the other up but both worried that the other has no interest beyond the professional, then some slightly awkward but very adorable coffee together featuring an entertaining exchange where Clara reveals she's a vegan, much to Selena's horror! Watching this relationship unfold and the confidence they each give each other was lovely.

To sum up, two good stories and well worth your time and money!

This book is just an excuse for smut for middle aged queer ladies, and I can't fault anyone for that. I, personally, did not find it titillating in the least, and instead found the scenes awkward. It's got all the plot of a porn movie and not much else. It has its demographic for sure, but unfortunately I was not one of the ones who enjoyed it. If you're just looking for some sapphic porn and aren't too picky about the writing style, this will work just fine for you.

Brenda Murphy and Megan Hart bring the heat in these two novellas! I have read many of Murphy's romances but this is my first by Hart. Both authors did a good job at giving us some creative stories which include shifters.

Shifting Flames by Murphy is pretty much written like many of her other books. Heavy on the BDSM and quick on the love. Actually this one has a bit more heavy play than I am use to. I was a bit thrown at who would be the Dom and the Sub in this one, but it fits. I liked that Eve and Celeste are totally different characters than I pictured in my head at the beginning of the story. Like all other Murphy stories, this one is pretty steamy. The only thing I didn't really like was the ending. I know this is a novella the ending seemed thrown together. I rate this one 3.75 stars.

I enjoyed The Fire inside by Hart a tad bit more. Like Shifting flames the element of BDSM and shifters is unique. At least I haven't read anything else like it. I like this one more because of Selena who is fighting the wolf inside of her. This is why she seeks out BDSM. Clara is an enjoyable character as well. They just really fit well together and I like who Hart writes this story and even though it is a novella, the ending fits well and brings the entire story together. I give her 4.25 stars.

Rating both, I give Soul Burn 4 stars.

This book contains 2 different shifter stories both have an underlying thread of BDSM. They're unrelated to each other except for the themes. I did like the second better than the first. The shifter subject is present but takes a second place finish to the sub/domme play. Although, I feel this fell short in that aspect, kind of taking buzz words but unfulfilling in actual context. I didn't feel the heat in the relationships it felt to me more transactional.

All in all, I give 3.25 stars for this book.

Two sexy shifter stories in one, both deep and a great treat

What was the book about?
Soul Burn is like the perfect deal. We got two different novellas written by two very talented writers in one book.

Shifting Flames written by Brenda Murphy.
Eve Perez a known screenwriter is struggling with the fallout of losing her credibility and reputation after being played by her ex. Now to reclaim her good name, she takes a job with a renowned author who isn’t known to be easy to work with. Celeste Quon is remarkable and a very successful writer but also a reclusive, who also is well known for being difficult. When they met both feel the strong connection. The need to explore that instant chemistry and the pull they feel toward each other can’t be denied. But what happens when Eve founds that there is something more to Celeste, a secret that could be the end of their working arrangement? Will they let fear to tear them apart or will they succumb to the fire of their desire?

The Fire Inside written by Megan Hart.
Clara is the best dome there is when it comes to hard play and pain, not many subs are up to the game. When her client Selena who is seeking extreme pain hires her, she knows she has found the perfect business agreement; but what happens when there is more than pain to give? She is scared but also very intrigued to find out more about Selene. What happens when Clara wants to discover no matter the consequences, the reason for the extreme pain Selena thrives? Selene on the other hand, can’t let Clara find her secret and ultimately the reason why she seeks that extreme pain. Can true love break into the darkness and fears?

Featured Tropes: BDSM / erotica / shapeshifters / romance/ self-acceptance

Two authors, one I am familiar with, the other I have not previously read. The paranormal genre is new for Murphy, so I was not entirely sure what to expect but I really like her style of writing, the diversity of the characters she creates and the stories she builds around them. Bottom line—I was in.

Shifting Flames by Brenda Murphy to me was one of ‘passions’. Murphy created highly creative, powerful characters in their own right who were dynamically drawn to one another by their own inner passion. The title, for me, was as much about one character’s existence as a shapeshifter, as it was about the shift of power between the two characters. So, yes BDSM is a major part of the story and dynamic between the two main characters, but also take the time to absorb what lies beneath the surface. The flames of passion and power are not always so easily defined. Murphy is great at developing diverse and complex characters and weaving stories built on absolute trust in another person…or in this case, just another. I love her style of writing and stories.

The Fire Inside by Megan Hart was so intense. Just consider the title, that kind of says intense doesn’t it. But here are some questions for you. What happens if that fire within gets out of control to the point your very nature changes form? What does it take to put out the fire inside you? Or who?
Hart’s writing is crisp, her characters were deeply complex and powerful, and the exchange of power may surprise you.

If you are a fan of paranormal and highly erotic fantasy, check out Murphy and Hart’s first collaborative endeavor. Just sayin’.

A pair of shape-shifter novellas. Both with BDSM, D/s. Both in which the physically stronger shifter is the submissive to a human partner. Though both stories were well-written, I liked the first better than the second. And as is often the case with novellas, I was left wanting more.

In the first story, tiger-shifter Celeste lives a hermit life up in the Colorado mountains. She is an author whose novel is being turned into a movie. Eve Perez is a screen-writer who is desperate for a job. So desperate she is willing to travel to Colorado and stay with Celeste in an all-or-nothing contract to come up with a script for the novel. When a snowstorm leaves her stuck there, the energy between the two is too much to ignore, but when the weather clears and the script is done, will Eve stay or will she go?

In the second, Selena is a wolf-shifter who has been fighting all her life to control the beast inside her. Clara is a dom-for-hire, to whom Selena turns for the pain that keeps the wolf at bay. But pain and fear are no way to live, and as she starts to feel more for Selena, Clara tries to help Selena reveal her secret and move on to living a more full life.

Soul Burn was an awesome read. There are two stories here that are both excellent. First is Shifting Flames that Brenda Murphy really did well. Both Celeste and Eve have challenges ahead of them and each must learn to trust each other. I thought the story was well written and has a hot, steamy factor that Murphy is know for and you get an awesome story. I thought it was interesting that Celeste was the sub in this story and that it does work well. I also liked the ending.

The fire inside was written by Megan Hart, this is the first that I’ve read of her writing and I really enjoyed it. At first I was unsure about how Selena was trying to accomplish through her sessions with Clara, but then I understood. I enjoyed how Clara gained Selena’s trust and how the story proceeded. I really like Clara and Selena and would love to read more about them.
Both story’s are very steamy and have BDSM in them that works well in the stories. I will definitely recommend this to others. I should warn you, it’s a hot sexy book.

Ok, I am going to be totally honest, this is not my cup of tea. I has no idea this was fantasy so it was a little hard for me to wrap my head around. The writing was clear and concise. Easy to follow and the story had a nice flow. Eve and Celeste's Screen writer and author relationship is built on the secret that Celeste is keeping. After emotions and things get physical Celeste makes a decision to share with Eve, letting fate decide. The Second book is the story of Clara and Selena, a domme and Selena being submissive and hiding a secret. Clara shows Selena what if feels like when someone shows tenderness. Clara for me won this story being that she is a domme , it could have went south quickly. These are well written stories and I am sure these are a lot of readers who just love these stories. I am not a reader of fantasy and I am not a female domme fan. But, with that said, I didn't dislike the stories. They were well written and an easy read.

Not bad, not bad, but it didn't exactly hit all my sweet spots. I enjoyed the first story more than the second story. It felt like there was more urgency, more heat, more yearning and want, and that's what I loved about it. The characters almost felt desperate to be with each other but the obstacles, albeit, kind of dumb, small obstacles that could be moved, were in the way and ultimately prevented them from expressing themselves, verbally and physically. Of course, they ended up together, and when they did, HOT! The first story was erotica/BDSM sprinkled with love. The kind of love you search for your whole life but never find it, then one day it practically falls on your lap without you even realizing it at first. I was pleasantly surprised that the shapeshifter was not the typical creature we're so used to seeing. Absolutely magnificent, and one of my favourite animals.

The second story left me feeling disappointed a bit. I appreciated the author showing us how the shifter kept her animal at bay by experiencing pain with her Miss at the BDSM club. I also loved seeing the protective side come out of the shifter when her Miss was in danger. As for the intimacy, however well written, though, didn't really do it for me.

If you enjoy erotica with an edge and a bit of mystical magic, then I suggest you pick up a copy of Soul Burn.

Both of these novellas were hot and sexy and a bit surprising. I didn't expect in the first, Shifting Flames, for the shifter to be submissive. In my fantasy or paranormal reading experience, they're all strong tops/dommes. But it worked, as did the romance. The same is true of the second story as well. This was more overtly domme/sub because the first setting was in a BDSM club where we're introduced to both characters, and some of their motivation. I liked the turning point with a minor character in the parking lot because it set up the change in the story well. I've read most of Murphy's work but this was my first read by Hart, and I'll be looking for more.

Soul burn is two erotic novellas that are FF and the shifter is the submissive partner. Both stories are very similar in that the age range is mid to late 30s , FF and BDSM elements. I think both stories could have been better presented and better developed. The story with Celeste if they had finished the plot would have been really really good but the focus because heavily on the FF aspect which felt disconnected.,. the same could be said of the 2nd story I just don't feel the 2nd story had a better plot IMO.

Holy cow! This book burned up my Kindle Fire! You two should chat more often, if this type of book is what you come up with! Great characters and storylines. Oh, and by the way, do not read this one in public. The squirming in your seat and bright red blushing may be a bit embarrassing! ☺️ Pick this one up, but be sure to have some ice water handy, to drink or pour over your head. You’ve been warned😉😏

The first story- a little too much thinking by the characters. Their inner monologues and thoughts written out on the page deterred me from reading those passages. Skipping the italicized moments allowed me to enjoy the plot.

The second story? I was all in. 10/10 recommend. Steamy, supernatural, good time all around:)

I love shifter stories, so I really enjoyed this book.

Two authors, two stories, two shifters coming from two different perspectives. One shifter who has embraced her nature, the other learning to embrace hers, throw in a D/s dynamic, it makes for two very interesting shifter stories.

This book contains two stories, both of which did my BDSM and Pansexual heart good! The first story is about a lesbian couple, one is a domme and the other is a submissive shifter (tiger) who fall in love with each other. The story is well-written and very spicy. The second story starts off with a beautifully done session between a domme and her submissive. This story is about a lesbian couple who have to go through many things before they get together, one of which is that the submissive is a werewolf and she just won't give in to love again. Beautifully written and also very spicy.

Wow! I'm not normally a fan of shifters or paranormal, but I AM a fan of Brenda Murphy. This is a two-story set, similar in that both feature submissive shifters and a fairly heavy dose of BDSM with racially diverse characters. I thought each story was the perfect length and was able to get through them each in one sitting. It was everything I expected from Brenda Murphy, but I wasn't familiar with Megan Hart since she doesn't "live" in the LGBTQ world. I will definitely recommend her writing to my friends who read mainstream romance. A great way to spend a couple of cold winter nights!

A fun sexy romp. Would have liked it to be longer. Great characterisation and settings, a little light on stakes.
