I found Sah on Instagram and love him! I wasn’t sure what to expect from the book as sometimes these things can be overly fluffy, but Spiritually Sassy provides practical tools and offers much more than surface level insights on what it takes to live an authentic life.
This is a book that I started to read on several different occasions. I was not ready for the work, and when I finally committed to reading it through, it was a lot of emotional work. That being said it was worth the efforts. I thought Sah provided a fresh perspective to a lot of the spiritual tools and strategies I have become familiar with. I appreciate him bringing some “sass” to the spiritual world, even if it was a bit cringy at times.
This is one that should definitely not be available as an audiobook, this book is designed to be scribbled in- there are lined literally spaces to write your own reflections and answers- and to be something that you will continue to dip in and out of as the teachings integrate into your life. I also think you should definitely be drawn to Sah's energy to warrant buying this, his beautiful energy is in every page, but he might not be the right teacher for you at this time.
That being said, as someone who is very much drawn to Sah after discovering his powerful guided meditations on Insight Timer, this book has had profound effects on my personal development journey. Yes many of the teachings are Buddhist, but having Buddhist wisdom being served by a queer person of colour who breaks many of the 'rules' of what it means to be spiritual these days, is divine.
This book came to me with perfect timing. I truely believe with these spiritual books you need to tune in to know which ones you're really drawn to and when is the right time to read them. I was really enjoying reading Sah's own story, having a gorgeous time filling in the questions in the first few chapters.. then I hit the chapter about forgiveness and ended up putting the book away for almost a year because I simply was not ready for the depth of that piece. I think that's the way these medicine books should be treated. As an unrushed journey- unravelling, embodying and integrating the wisdom- not just taking in all the information on a cerebral level and then moving onto the next book on your shelf.
I felt it calling me again recently and have finished it, having done enough shadow work (with lots of professional support) that I was actually able to forgive my abuser and complete the work of that chapter. Some of the medicine of this work will be harder to swallow, and I respect that.
There are invitations in this book to delve into the darkest parts of yourself, but after doing so to meet bliss and empowerment. The sass and humour along the way was such a pleasurable aspect too. I am so grateful for Sah, this book has been a beautiful support on my journey of setting myself free from my past.
I have followed Sah on Instagram for a while and really love his energy, so was excited to listen to his audiobook. I only listened to about half the book, as I found myself losing interest. As insightful as it was into Sah's own awakening, I felt that the techniques he outlined were generic in the self-help literature. I did enjoy the Buddhist topics, didn't finish it. Will still follow Sah on Instagram, but I don't think this book was for me.
This is going to be my number 1 go to reminder of self for the foreseeable future. It shows you that you can be fun, wild, loud, fluid, and vibrant and still be centered and spiritual. It’s supported my belief in abstract personal spiritual living and embracing all my life passion. Love love LOVE this book!
I wanted to love this book but truthfully just didn’t. there were some good take-aways but overall I found it difficult to follow - perhaps that shows how much I need a book like this lol.
the style of the book is great & I enjoyed using it in my journaling, I wouldn’t however recommend this book, even to my most spiritual friends
Amazing book that’s taught me so much about life and myself and my heart. I’ve done Sahs online courses and this is such a beautifully written and useful guide to reconnecting with yourself and of forgiveness. It also has beautiful practices in it and useful practices to use later on.
Love this book. I am going to read it again right away. I didn't know how helpful having a journal ready would be so doing another round with my journal ready. Fantastic, positive energy filled way to present spirituality and tips for growth
Loved the book! I have earmarked so many pages to come back to, full of such great advice and I will definitely be incorporating all of his wisdom into my daily life!
Sah is the piece of my puzzle that was missing. I know I'm doing the work but his teaching methods speak directly to my soul. This book is everything the world needs right now.
I have read this twice and done most all the journaling. A beautiful take on how to live an authentic life and heal trauma through movement and meditation! So incredible.
Sah is not just an author, but an incredible writer. Sah effortlessly intertwines his own life story with practical and energetic teachings within Spiritually Sassy. His writing is not repetitive, like I find in most “self-help” books. All of the practices explained throughout the book are also listed in the back, so that you have the basis of everything you need in one place. Spiritually Sassy is full of actionable steps you can take as you read the book, along with steps that will take more time depending on your personal need. I highly recommend this book!
Even though this book has been written from sheer love to human kind, this book was not written for me. I struggled to make sense of it page after page, until I realized all the information included were old ideas; thoughts I had already pondered in my philosophical path or been presented with by wise people who had come before Sah. Nonetheless, this doesn't mean that maybe, somewhere, somehow, a lost soul won't find this book is about them, and will start growing a pair of bright wings where they "had shoulders/smooth as raven claws".
Solid intro to aspects of mindfulness and Buddhism, not as sassy as hoped.
Having read “hardcore Zen” by Brad Warner some years ago (another good read if you like casual and at times irreverent language to frame these ideas), as someone familiar with Buddhism but preferring an informal approach, & after listening to a podcast interview with Sah I was happy to buy the book. Why? His voice, his wild unrestrained joy, and in the interview presenting dancing as a way to freedom.
Having read it, I’d buy it again. There were a handful of questions and insights that were and will be truly useful to me.
But I skimmed quite a bit. That voice I liked got kind of... lost.
What surprised me was how little there was in how the tantric path diverges from the ascetic path. And, as I led off: less sassy than hoped. I was ready for the author’s voice to be as though in a casual conversation, and it didn’t get there most of the time. (Editors, take heed?) It’s a genuinely solid book nonetheless. Torn between three stars and four.
