The dragon riders disappeared the year she was born.

Kalina is a nobody, an orphan whose only remarkable trait is the silver hair she is forced to hide.  But when she overhears that she might be a child of the Valdir, a silver-haired race of dragon riders that disappeared sixteen years ago, she chooses to leave her old life behind and venture into the unknown to discover who she is and where the dragons disappeared to.

But someone has been searching for her. In a strange city, searching for answers to her past, Kalina must conquer her own fear, deal with dangers she never anticipated from a crown she never knew existed, and forge friendships with unlikely people to help her find her place in the world.

Born of Air is the first book in the Valdir Chronicles.  If you loved Eragon you will love this coming of age adventure.

It's been a little while since I last dug into a solid fantasy and this one even had dragons! I really enjoyed the adventure and am curious to read the next book in the series. Sometimes I binge too many books in the same genre, which I'd been doing again recently, so switching to this YA fantasy adventure felt refreshing and exciting. I'd absolutely recommend it if you're looking for your next fantasy fix. ;)

This book started out really slow. Honestly, for the first half of the book, nothing really happened. It was work and sleep, work and sleep. It felt like prewriting. What an author would do to learn their character. Not that it was bad, I learned a lot about the main character, it was just slow. A little hard to get through. But the writing was good and the premise was interesting so I carried on. And when stuff finally happened it was great. The plot picked up and I couldn’t put it down. Still, it was pretty predictable. Nothing that happened shocked me.

Kalina was a young and naive girl. Some points I thought maybe she seemed immature but I think her childhood made her that way. She never really left the Abby until the story started so she wouldn’t know much about the outside world. Also, she grew out of that mindstate as she learned more. It was a slow and realistic transition. Kalina was a sweet girl and I really wanted to protect her.

So the plot, albeit slow, was very interesting. I love dragons and dragon riders so that hooked me and made me want to read it in the first place. I like the concept of the Valdir being a different race not just a name for dragon riders, well that's if I am understanding this right. The trope of the last dragon rider always gets me. I’m a sucker for it. A girl hiding who she is while also learning who she is is a yes from me. And I’ll say it again. DRAGONS. But I wanted more dragons!

Some of the exposition parts of the story felt teachy. An example is when Kalina first met the wyvern they explained to her in the middle of their conversation that they were a smaller cousin to the dragons. It felt forced. There were better ways to tell it to the characters and the readers.

All in all, this was a fun book. I enjoyed it, but it needed work. I think the writing was great and I would definitely read more by this author.

Thank you for the ARC. This is my review, honest and unbiased.

A tale of lost heroes, dragons, treachery, friendship and bravery.

I was sent an e copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Our heroine is Kalina, a character who is immediately relateble, with her dreams of adventure and seeing the world beyond the Abby that is all she’s known her entire life.
We follow her as she learns there is much more to her own history than simply being an orphan.
The friends she gains on her adventures and the enemies who cross her path are well fleshed out characters with full lives and goals of their own which makes them feel very life-like and interesting to read about.
I really enjoyed the friendships that were portrayed in this book, they were well developed and realistic as was the subtle romance, which added a nice subplot that doesn’t interfere with the main plot of the book.
The pacing, though a little slow to begin with picks up nicely as the plot unfolds.
The plot itself surprised me more than once. This to me is a classic coming of age/self discovery orphan story with dragons yet it takes twists and turns that I definitely did not predict.
The writing is direct and straight forwards and sweetly descriptive, particularly when it comes to wyverns and dragons.
I would not hesitate to recommend this to fans of younger YA fantasy and dragon lovers.

I enjoyed reading this book. The plot is full of exciting action and clever plot twists. I loved seeing the main character's notions of family grow as strangers step up to help her. Some of the books descriptions are breathtaking. I liked the wyvern--I'm not sure why they made such a big deal about it being "just" a wyvern and dragons being so much more awesome--I'd take the smaller one any day.
My main critique with the novel is that I would like to see a deeper point of view. More internal thought and filtering all of the words through Kalina's mind would increase the personal engagement with the plot. All of the action doesn't matter as much unless we know how it effects the main character.
Overall this was a fun read. I definitely noticed the kinship to Eragon, and I think I'd have especially loved this book when I was going through my Eragon phase--the next generation of dragon rider fans will want to check this book out!

3.5 stars Enjoyable but mixed feelings.

The story jumps around a bit and throws different plot twists that don’t flow quite right.

The good:
1. I like the heroine and the story is interesting.
I will be looking to try the next book and dragons and coming of age story etc... I do like.

The bad: (some spoilers)

1. The ending twist was thrown in for shock value and shouldn’t have happened that quickly and for no real reason.
2. Other story twists just didn’t flow right. Revelation of her parents and the prince and princess relationships didn’t flow quite right.

3. The world building and explanation for a lot of things was very scarce. The story was told from the perspective of the heroine and therefore we only knew what the heroine did and didn’t know the larger context.

This could’ve worked better, but combine that with twists that were thrown in for shock value and then never developed causes the book read to be slightly choppy.

All that being said there is a good story here it’s just rough so I will see if the next book has more polish.

I got an advanced copy of BORN OF AIR for an honest review.

It was an easy breasing story to read through. It does remind me of Eragon a bit. Love the mystery and how Kalina's world falls apart when when she realises she is not like the others. She belongs to a mysterious race, called the Valdir, that haven't been seen in a long time. Do they even exist.

But she founds allies in unusual corners who help her to discover who she really is. It is a high chasing story that keeps you reading until the end of the book. I love the tales around the dragons and wyverns, and the fantastical landscape before us.

Will she find her own people, or try dying for it while the cruel prince of Askor is searching for her?
The whole book is packed with action, with some moments to breath and have a lovely blooming romance.

Dragons are my favourite fantasy creatures and dragon rider stories are amongst my favourite. I enjoy how the focus here is often on character progression/coming of age and magic is secondary or not featured at all.

I liked the main character Kalina from the start and the other characters are very relatable too.
The parts of the country relative to Kalina’s adventures are well described and the glimpses into the wider world show that the world has been well thought out.

The first chapters were a little slow and all about getting to know the heroine Kalina.
After that the story picked up the pace and a number of different events followed on from each other in quick succession. In some cases I felt they moved on too quickly, because what happened should have had a bigger, often traumatic impact on Kalina, but she seemed to be able to move on fast.
I was also a bit confused as to time progression, I felt it was sometimes unclear how long Kalina was in a certain place and situation, and her injuries seemed to heal very fast considering their severity and often not be a hindrance to her soon after. Maybe Valdir heal quicker than regular humans, but if this is the case it is not mentioned.

Overall I enjoyed the story, though I think the author tried to fit too many experiences into the length of the story, so some parts felt a bit rushed and the effects and emotions not explored fully. Having said that, I would be hard pressed to say what could be left out, since everything played a part in developing Kalina’s personality. So maybe the book needed to be a bit longer?
For the same reason the flow of the story was at times a bit inconsistent. I am still looking forward to reading about Kalina’s next adventures and how she deals with becoming Queen of the Valdir.

The narrator Elizabeth De Vault has a pleasant voice and she was very clear and concise. In general I prefer narrators, who can give each character their own voice, but I didn’t really miss it.

I received this book in audio book format free from the author and am leaving this review of my own volition.

Wow This story with Kalina is fantastic. This read grabbed me from the first page to the last. It took me into the world of Kalina and her unique situation. I love how the Character was written along with the other characters in this read. I felt like I was right there living the story vicariously through the character. This Author does a fantastic job at the story. Theres twists and turns. As well as dragons. There is never a dull moment. I couldn't put the book down, I didn't want to miss the story. If this is a series I just love it. And the book cover is magnificent as well. I highly recommend this read. This is more than a 5 star story. This would make a great movie.

First of all, I must admit that I am an avid fan of dragons, therefore I already knew it couldn’t be that bad. 😜. This book is well written and drew me in immediately and held me captive until I was finished reading it. I wanted more and now! However, I am not a person who likes to cry (it gives me puffy eyes), I did shed a tear or two. I would definitely recommend this book even if you don’t adore dragons. It’s a great fantasy novel that you don’t want to miss!

This book is awesome! Kalina is an innocent girl, and orphan in her quest to find her roots.
Thought the rough plot lines didn't came as a surprise to me, is in the characters, the writing and specially in the places and landscapes that the beauty of this book really lies.
I loved the story and the book ends with a really high note. I won't be spoiler, all I can say is that I can't wait to find what will happen next. The big adventure is just starting and will be epic.

I would give this book a 3.5 star rating.

I wanted to love this book. It had everything I could imagine liking. Dragons, orphans trying to find out who they are, and adventure.

Although the story is intriguing, it is obviously an early book in the author's career. The pacing started out slow, which is fine. I can appreciate a slow build up. The foreshadowing was pretty obvious. I was able to guess all of the plot twists. There were quite a few typos and strangely worded sentences and the book could have used another round of editing or two (not enough to be considered bad, but enough to pull me out of the story a bit).

Now that I've gotten the negative out of the way, the story was intriguing. The characters, relatable. And dragons. Although the dragons didnt show up until like the last quarter of the book, they were still in the book and I love me some dragons.

It was enjoyable enough that I've picked up the next book. And I would recommend it.

Such a good read

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and could not stop reading once I started. I love how the main character, Kalina grows and matures through the book. I also of course loved the wyverns and dragons! I did get a little teary eyed at the end, but what a fantastic end (or beginning I should say) it was. I can't wait to find out what Kalina will do next.

Born of Air is a story of becoming, where a young lady learns that she is more than what she was taught. Being raised in an orphanage in a small village was all she knew.
Follow Kalina’s adventure as she learns of her heritage and finds her only family and what it means to be. Lots of adventure, love, and tears! Great coming of age story. Ps…did mention the dragons?

Kalina is a teen-aged girl living in an
orphanage, called The Abbey, near a
small village.
Suddenly, one day, strangers arrive in
the village and she must run for her
life...just because she has silver hair !!??
Have your coffee beside you, your slippers

The story is compelling and it was easy to get lost in Kalina's adventures. I thought she was an incredible heroine, though I wished she had a little more to fight for.
I also think the characters could've used a little more depth. Every character was either plainly good or bad. There really was no morally blurred characters.

All in all though, it was an enjoyable read and I look forward to more from this author.

I picked up this book primarily because I LOVE dragons. Especially intelligent ones. I’m so glad I finally took the time to start this series. Kalina is a relatable girl. Bullied, but fairly courageous. Kind, eager to learn and intelligent. She knows that some at the abbey she was raised in have secrets about her. Or at least *one* secret. She’s drawn to learning of the Valdir. So she decides after meeting and befriending Savath, the wyvern, she will see what she can learn in the capital city. Though it will bring her closer to the prince, a man bent on finding her. The series of events from the time she reaches the capital are heartwarming, disgusting, slightly scary and sweet at different times, but it says that the author is great at bringing out the emotions of her readers. I very much enjoyed the ride and especially the little surprise at the end of the book. I can’t wait to read the next adventure.

“She knew this was possibly the most adventure she’d ever have in her lifetime and she wanted to cherish every moment. Flying felt like she had put on a second skin, one that fit her perfectly, and her heart sank as they did, not wanting to give up the joy of flying.”

*I received this book in exchange for an honest review*

I picked this up since I’ve always loved reading fantasy and anything with dragons! This was a quick read, but I read it in one sitting since I was hooked! I felt that the start was a bit slow, but I love Kalina’s character, especially how the author describes her uncertainty but also her confidence. I liked how Kalina faces relatable problems such as being bullied by Mari and Daillion. One thing that bothered me was that many things seemed to come easily to Kalina and many people went out of their way to help her, which didn’t seem entirely realistic to me. I loved the section at the end where she found the Valdir. However, the last plot twist was too sudden and I think there should have been some more build up to it.

Overall, this was a great first book of the series and I’m excited to read more!

Little issues, but good overall

The story seemed to start off a bit slowly. There are small inconsistencies (like someone saying a flight somewhere would only take a few hours, they left after breakfast and arrived at sunset... That's more than a few hours). Overall though I liked the story and the characters.I bought the next one ☺

Foundling Kalina lives a life of drudgery, never knowing why she has to hide her silver hair, until the arrival of a knight, searching for the last of the dragon riders. She flees, hunted by a evil prince as she searches for her heritage.

The narrative would probably work best for younger teens and on that basis provides all the staples of vulnerable, feisty heroine, a loyal love interest, friends found when needed most and the obligatory identity twist. As a fun start to a series, it performs well, though there weren't enough dragons for me.

This was an enjoyable book, but a little too slow paced for my taste. I felt like the first half of the book dragged and I struggled through it. Then, after the halfway point, it picked up, but then felt rushed. The plot itself was good and has lots of potential. I didn’t like Kalina much as a character. I constantly forgot she was 16 because she seemed so much younger, childish even. I’m disappointed we didn’t get to see her bond with a dragon yet, but hopefully that’s in books to come. The ending was great. It ended so perfectly, setting up for the next book.

This book started out as a short story about a virgin obsessed Wyvern, and then somehow morphed into a three book series (and a few novellas planned). I don't really even know how it happened. An author friend of mine gave me the prompt and I just started writing. A few days later I was 9,000 words in with no signs of stopping!

I have loved my adventures so far with brave Kalina. She isn't afraid of any challenge, despite her own struggle with a panic disorder. She doesn't let it stop her and she works hard to ground herself and move on. She really just wants to belong, and with the help of a few good friends (mainly Talon, who has a kind heart and loves dragons as much as she does) she overcomes obstacles to find that place.

I'm working on book two, and I'm super excited to write book three, where things get a bit more epic! I really hope you enjoy this book, because I really loved writing it.
