Summer Hastings hates Christmas. She loves sunshine, the beach and running her travel agency, sending people off to their dream destinations – even if she doesn’t get to see the world for herself. For Summer, Christmas is nothing but a reminder of all the things that have gone horribly wrong in her life, so when handsome Noel Pritchett moves his pop-up Christmas shop in the store next to hers, Summer is livid.
Noel loves Christmas…and he also has a sneaking suspicion that he might be falling in love with Summer, if only he could break through the armour she has surrounded herself with. Just why does Summer hate Christmas so much? And can Noel be the one to prove to her that life can be sweet all year round?

I’ve picked up this book expecting a seasonal romcom, but this was heavier than the cover leads on.
Summer has a travel agency and loves everything summerly related - sun, heat, beach and sea. She longs for her own travels and for her life to begin. Noel, loves Christmas and every year opens a Christmas pop up store somewhere. This year the chosen place is just beside Summer shop, leading to a less than cold meet up.
I really liked Rachel Dove Ten Dates and I wanted to enjoy this one just as much. Unfortunately, it had several things than didn’t feel right to me, especially regarding the amount of violence between the characters. The writing is good, but too many things are happening, and none of those is more than superficially explored. I understand Summer had a difficult life, however, some of her actions are inexcusable, making it hard to believe on their HEA. The resolution occurs too fast and easy for the amount ou problems the characters were experiencing.
Overall, it was an ok read, with multiple POV, and a diversity of difficult topics and their consequences on character lives and family bonds.
2.5 stars
I would like to thank Boldwood Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was an enjoyable, if at times heavy emotional enemies to lovers, reverse grumpy/sunshine British romance that sees to neighboring business owners at odds when one loves Christmas and the other hates it. Summer hasn't had an easy life, her mother was emotionally abusive and has forced Summer to miss out on a lot of things.
When Noel opens his Christmas shop next door he's immediately drawn to Summer, if only he can convince her to take a chance on love. This one tackles some tough topics but was overall a heartwarming read and good on audio. Would recommend for fans of authors like Mhairi McFarlane. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review!
Summer hates Christmas and I did not particularly like Summer, either. Not just because of her festive aversions, she is quite a bully, arrogant and not very nice to others who don’t fit her ideals. She treats Noel pretty badly in the early parts of the novel and I admired his persistence in chasing the girl he fancies (even though I also thought he could do better himself!).
This is not much of a Christmassy read. It features a Christmas shop and Summer’s dislike of the season but otherwise, I actually thought it was set at a warmer time of year. It didn’t help that Summer’s name connotes such wonderful weather, but also the characters were wearing flip flops, billowing skirts at a time of year when we are starting to wrap up warm – especially if you life by the sea like these characters do. This irritated me a bit because it felt so out of keeping with the tradition of the story. I guess I was also hoping for something a bit more Christmassy. Therefore, if you are after a light festive touch, this is probably what you are after.
But what kept me reading was my interest in the minor characters. I warmed to Jean and I liked seeing how her life alters when a new neighbour moves in. This added a lighter touch to the story because it is quite emotional when you consider everything that Summer is going through. Her dislike of Christmas is related to her home life and this home life has collapsed in on itself.
With a reclusive mother, Summer is bound to home and is the primary carer for a woman who used to be so strong and independent. As the novel progresses, it is clear that her parents’ divorce has a lot to answer for, leading both women to give up on life altogether. Summer struggles and her self-preservation is reflected in her conflicts with Noel. I was interested in watching Summer’s mother alter over the novel. When there are better days, I felt as hopeful as Summer, seeing Angie start to reconnect with the world beyond her front door. Yet, there are still demons that haunt Summer and Angie and the writer does this to show how difficult recovery can be.
I kept reading this book because I was most interested in Angie and Jean. Unfortunately, Summer’s earlier actions really put me off her character and I thought Noel’s kindness was borderline insipid. He sounds lovely but not deserving of a relationship with Summer. However, I was glad I finished the book because the conclusion was so heart-felt and warming, setting everything right with the world. It had Christmas spirit… despite it being January.
In conclusion, this is not really a festive read, more about the antics of a Christmas-hating, angry woman; a Christmas pop-up shop; and a broken family. It doesn’t go too deep but I think I would have preferred a bit of a lighter tone, or the whole Christmas theme to be abandoned completely in favour of exploring the sub-plot of family instead.
With thanks to Boldwood books and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Many Aussie’s celebrate Christmas in July wanting to experience a traditional Christmas dinner on the coldest month of the year, well, I’m not going as far as making a Chrissy dinner but it is giving me the excuse to read some of my Christmas books this month and as it’s wintry here in Australia it’s the perfect opportunity to read books with a snowy vibe and winter scene.
Christmas in July read 2025
Summer was mean, grumpy and a little unlikable to start with, but she had her reasons.
Once the reader gets into the story it’s cute, entertaining and heartwarming and you can’t help but be lost in the tale.
Honestly, this book was a huge miss for me. The characters had such unrealistic and labile moods that it felt like I had whiplash. And the POV changes were extreme. One sentence was in the POV for one character and the next another. It made the story hard to follow. I also never figured out why Summer hated Christmas so much. Overall, just not my cup of tea.
Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for providing me this gifted copy in exchange for my honest review.
Summer hated Christmas is the plain, undiluted truth. She abhorred it with all her heart. Her past was too entrenched in her, gripping her in the grinchy ways, that try as she might, she would always hate Christmas. Noel opened his forever festive shop, right next to hers and sold everything connected to—you guessed it—CHRISTMAS. Oh boy!! Sparks flew. The first chapter had Summer kicking the Christmas Tree. Oh no!! What was Noel to do? He had to fall in love and teach her to love Christmas once again!!
My very first book by Rachel Dove made my heart fly. There was magic in her words. The scenes opened in front of my eyes as if I could see every rich nuance of it, from the expressions on their faces to their emotions. I knew I was reading one talented author’s book.
The characters, oh what can I say about them?!! They are unique. C’mon, who hates Christmas?! They are real, their emotions strengthened the story in a way that I didn’t have words. This was not just a love story, there were other relationships, some loving and some which were broken. There were turns in the book where the story dipped. My breath literally hitched at a few places.
This was Summer’s story and of the people surrounding her. My heart has been frozen solid. I hate love. But this book pierced the hard encasing, broke through the cold walls, and held me in its loving grasp. Not many books can do that. There was joy in the writing. Rachel Dove knew how to spin gold from straw. Noel was simply awesome. He never gave up. I could feel those tiny hearts fluttering and dancing when he was around. Was this love?
At first, I picked up this novel with some reservations, as it seemed to have a strong Christmas theme, and I'm not particularly enthusiastic about the holiday season. However, the story exceeded my expectations in many ways. While it does have elements of Christmas woven throughout, it goes far beyond that, delving into various themes and intricate character dynamics.
The strength of this novel lies in its ability to explore a multitude of factors and considerations, creating a rich tapestry of storytelling. It's not just about Christmas; it's about human relationships, personal growth, and the complexities of life itself. The characters are well-developed, and their journeys are both relatable and thought-provoking.
One aspect that stands out is the author's skill in navigating the various elements of the plot. Despite my initial reservations, I found myself fully engaged in the story, eagerly turning the pages to see how it would all unfold. The pacing is just right, with moments of tension, reflection, and heartwarming scenes that keep you invested from start to finish.
In the end, while I may not be a Christmas enthusiast, this novel managed to captivate me with its depth and intricacy. It's a testament to the author's storytelling prowess and their ability to make you care about the characters and their journeys, regardless of your personal preferences. I highly recommend giving this novel a chance, as it has much more to offer than what may initially meet the eye.
Train wreck of what I can only assume is an unedited first draft.
Summer lives in a small coastal English tourist town. She owns her own travel agency and enjoys planning trips for others (even though she has never left her town). Noel moves to town to open a pop up Christmas store in the fall. Noel’s pop up store is next door to Summer’s travel agency. Summer is described in the blurb as “hating Christmas”, but in this novel hate isn’t a strong enough word. She loathes Christmas with a passion and will fight any stranger who dares to reference the holiday in her presence. On the first day of meeting Noel she loses her mind on three separate occasions. She is an adult woman who is described as feral at the sight of a Christmas tree. The story continues from there with added in plot lines from Summer’s mother (who is agoraphobic) and Summer’s cleaning lady.
This novel was all over the place from the characterizations to the plot to the narrative to the writing style. Several times throughout the book it felt like the author was trying to squeeze in way too many plot line or tropes when she was lost as to how to continue the story.
Brief highlights building to the train wreck: -Zero idea why Noel was attracted to Summer. She was rude and terrible to him the first several times he met her. She acted like an immature child anytime someone mentioned Christmas. -This may be a personal issue, but I really don’t like when POV changes without notice. Several times POV would change in the middle of a paragraph. To me this is jarring and forces me to go back to reread the page to figure out which POV we are viewing now. -This was described as a “romantic comedy”, but had several trigger warning issues pop up out of the blue and seemed very unnecessary to continue the story (such as a drug overdose death of an adult child of a tertiary character). -I can only assume that when the author wasn’t sure how to continue the story she would add in another POV. By the end of the novel we had 6 different POVs. -There was never a true explanation for the depth of Summer’s hatred of Christmas.
Thank you to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for an ebook of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Review for 'Summer Hates Christmas' by Rachel Dove.
Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Rachel Dove, Book And Tonic, Boldwood Books and Rachel's Random resources Tours.
Publication date 19th August 2023.
This is the first book I have read by this author but it most definitely won't be my last!!
This novel consists of 17 chapters. The chapters are short to medium in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
This book is beautifully written with vivid descriptions setting the picture perfectly in the readers mind. The title, description and cover works perfectly with the storyline.
If you are looking for a stunning romcom then this is the book for you!! Rachel's evocative writing skills sucks the reader deep into the pages bringing the absolutely beautiful Bridlington to life along with all the amazing characters. I have never visited Yorkshire let alone Bridlington in my life but it felt like I was on holiday there throughout this gorgeous read and when I closed the pages it definitely makes me want to pack my bags and visit it for myself!!!! I absolutely loved the plot of two people who have the complete opposite personalities working in shops next to each other, selling contradicting things and clashing big time, and boy did they clash!!!! Along with the stunning storyline of enemies to lovers there is also the deeper storyline of Summer's relationship with her mum Angie who is seriously suffering mentally and also physically after something happened with her husband, Summers father. Summer wants to jet off on holidays but feels she can't leave her mum alone even with the help of her 'adopted mum' Jean. This book had so many emotions packed in it was like being on a rollercoaster and as well as going from laughing to annoyed to heartbroken to bliss there's stories of waffle stealing seagulls, Santa bashing, holiday making, one legged seagulls, dancing elf's and so, so much more!!! This is one of those rare books that are perfect to read regardless of where you are or what season it is as it has a bit of everything from Summer Loving to Forever Festive!! While reading this book you will be swept away and left feeling the fresh air, hearing the seagulls and seeing and hearing the festivities come alive. It is a stunning escapism read and it genuinely felt like I was dropped into the middle of this beautiful place that I absolutely loved exploring. I was absolutely devastated when I came to the end and had to pack my mental suitcase to return to rainy Wales. It is ram packed with emotions from tears of sadness to tears of happiness, friendship, love, community, new beginnings, breaking free, supporting friends, mental health, festivities, family and everything you could ask for in a beautiful page turner!!! This is one of those gorgeous books that I just could not book down. I lost count the amount of times I promised myself just one more chapter but with just 17 I thought there was no point in just one more and ended up devouring it in one sitting!! This book is an absolutely stunning read that is perfect to lift your spirits!! I felt like I was next to Summer and Noah throughout the book from their first meeting to the absolutely beautiful ending!!!
Grab your copy of this stunning page turner today and clear your schedules as there's no way you will be able to put this down once you start!!!
I absolutely loved these strong, larger than life and realistic characters!!! I was gutted when I came to the last sentence and had to say goodbye to them so my fingers and toes are crossed that Rachel is, at the least, thinking of making another book to follow on what happens with Noah and Summer. I absolutely loved these two characters along with the majority of the others who all played their parts perfectly. There wasn't any characters who were just 'floaters' who are there but have no involvement with the story at all. I definitely took a while to warm to Summer, especially after the way she was towards Noah but warm to her I did!!! In fact by the end of the story I absolutely loved her!!! I'm not going to say too much about the characters as I don't want to spoil it for future readers but I will say my heart absolutely went out to her and I could see why she was the way she was at the beginning by the end. I absolutely loved Noah from the start!!! What a sweet, romantic and gorgeous character!! I had to admit I had no idea who Poldark was and ended up googling him but strangely enough who I had pictured before I googled him wasn't that far off so it just goes to show how fantastic and evocative Rachel's writing skills are as she created the characters perfectly using her fantastic writing skills and they all came to life in front of my eyes!!! I started off feeling sorry for Angie but my feelings for her definitely fluctuated through the storyline, the same with another character who I won't name. I adored Noah's mum Sheila, Summer's second mum Jean and Avril who were also amazing characters. That's all I am saying about these fantastic group of characters apart from they will stay with me for a long time and you will regret it if you don't meet them so grab your copy today!!!!
I absolutely loved this amazing and gorgeous uplifting page turner!!! A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS TO RACHEL on this stunning read!!! I cannot wait to read more of your books as if this is anything to go by I just know I will love them already. I'd like to welcome you to my favourite authors club and here is to your next success 🥂!!!
Make sure you read to the very end of the book to read the first chapter of Rachel's 'Mr Right Next Door' which promises to be just as gorgeous as this book and is one I'm definitely looking forward to reading myself!!
Overall an absolutely gorgeous, laugh out loud page turning romcom!!! Absolutely LOVED ❣️ IT!!!

✨ARC Review✨ Summer hates Christmas and doesn’t understand why people go through all the trouble with decorations, singing, and stocking up on holiday foods and drinks. Instead, she would rather be relaxing in the sun, on the beach with a refreshing cocktail.🍸
What she doesn’t expect is that Noel just got a lease next door to her traveling agent business and he owns a Christmas shop.
“This, Summer Hastings, is war!” “Get ready for Christmas, baby!”
And was it was😂. I could not stop laughing at the things the two did to get back at each other.
Summer needed a reality check a few times for her behavior though. Her actions were at times very childish for being a grown woman but I understood that it was part of her character and I’m glad she did change.
Summer’s mom hasn’t been the same since losing her husband. She stays in the house and never goes out. Drives summer crazy with multiple daily phone calls while she’s at work.
I felt like all the characters and events in this story were very relatable. We find out why Summer doesn’t like Christmas, and how losing a partner can do a lot of damage to one’s mental health.
The story ends with a HEA and I was very happy with how it ended. This was a fun, swoon-worthy Christmas book. I enjoyed how it was different from the whole hallmark vibe.
Thank you, Rachel Dove, Boldwoods Books, and Netgalley for the EARC! As always, my review is my opinion and thoughts. This review will be shared on my Instagram (@Alexandriavwilliams_) shortly.
I really struggled to like Summer and sympathise with her as she has such a harsh way of speaking and can be so unpredictable. It is only as her story unfolds, that you realise quite what is going on in her life and why she reacts as she does. Then you begin to have empathise and wonder how her future is going to pan out. Noel seems to be able to disregard her harshness and despite everything she says to him, has the patience to get to know her. Family is an important component of the story and there are some surprising twists in Summer's background which I did not see coming.
I did enjoy Jean's part of the story and her growing friendship with her neighbour. She also has a sympathy for Summer and Summer's mother. There are some genuinely funny parts of the story. I especially liked Noel's reaction to the thieving seagull and to Summer's spray tan sessions. With mental health very much at the centre of the story, this is a book with plenty of light and shade.
I really enjoyed this story. I went into it thinking it was just a cute cheesy romance, but it ended up being a lot more. The complicated family aspect really had me turning the pages to know more. Summer sure put up with a lot in her life and I have to say I don’t blame her for being grumpy. I thought it was nice that we got to see little snippets of the character's pasts as well as big parts of their current life instead of it being just about Summer and Noel. Also, I knew something was up with Avril, but it was definitely not the twist I was expecting! Can’t wait to read more by this author.
It was a cute read... Summer Had it rough and was a Unlikable character to start with but i think she slowly reforms herself... I Did find myself asking what Noel was being so nice to her for... But he Makes the Grinch's heart finally grow. Its a bit of a sad read especially the mum.... for that many years Must be difficult and heartbreaking.
Summer has her reasons to be dreading the approach of Christmas – she’d prefer to ignore it altogether, enjoying her walks on the beach, and planning next year’s summer holidays for the customers who visit her Bridlington travel agency. When a pop-up Christmas shop opens up next door, it’s the stuff of nightmares – Noel might be an Aiden Turner look-alike, keen to make friends and get to know her better, but his enthusiasm for everything Christmas sets her against him from the very beginning.
I was expecting a light and festive romantic comedy – and the book certainly has plenty of laughs as Noel tries so hard to win her over and, after a distinctly shaky start, a friendship develops between them that might just become a romance. But this is a book with darker edges too – Summer’s life away from work is difficult, and she’s filled with dread and sadness every time she turns into her street and approaches the neglected house she shares with her damaged and reclusive mother. The family situation is so well drawn, and with particular sensitivity – heartbreaking at times, but with a glimmer of hope shining ever brighter when Summer takes steps to change things for the better. And there are some related sub plots that add extra depth to the story – a really lovely supportive friendship, and some particularly difficult family complications.
At first, I found Summer rather difficult to like – her reaction to Noel’s presence seemed rather OTT and out of proportion – but she did slowly win my heart as her issues became clearer. I really felt for her – planning experiences of a lifetime for others, but with no chance of managing her own escape. I loved Noel from the start though – he’s a bit like an over-excited labrador puppy, but with depths that are gradually revealed – and his understanding of Summer’s issues and the gentleness with which he handles her only made me love him more. The chemistry between them developed really nicely – and although I doubted it at first, this was a rather lovely developing romance I really believed in. And yes, there are heartbreaking elements to the story, but there’s a lot of fun too – some of the Christmassy set pieces were really laugh-out-loud, and the perfect counterpoint to the more emotional moments.
Not quite the book I expected, but it was certainly one I enjoyed – for the raw emotional content that was so well handled, but also for the romance and many fun moments along the way. Uplifting and particularly heartwarming – I’d recommend you give it a try.
Pre- Order this book now!!!!! Wow! What a fantastic book! I have absolutely loved this story from start to end. I really hope there will be a follow on with these characters because I would love to know more. This is a beautiful, heart-warming story which has grabbed my attention from the very beginning. The plot had twists which I didn’t predict were coming but kept me needing to know what was going to happen next. Despite not liking Christmas, I have really liked main character Summer. I felt able to relate to her in some ways- especially as she has tried to protect her heart. She is such a genuine character and Noel is her complete opposite. I loved the love/hate relationship that appeared at the start of the book. Summer was so rude but he still made an effort. I love the references to Christmas shops and the grinch in this book. We are definitely approaching my favourite time of year so this book definitely made me smile. Rachel has portrayed the relationships fantastically throughout this book. We have a budding romance, marriage separation and it’s after effects as well as Summer discovering people she never expected. Every scenario within the book could easily be real and are described in a completely realistic way. I adore Rachel’s style of writing, she always manages to really hook me from the beginning. I couldn’t put this book down, I’ve read this in just two evenings. I have to say, hand on heart this is definitely one of my favourite books. Rachel you are a queen of romance stories- I already cannot wait for more. This book deserves hundreds and thousands of stars. It is so wonderful, I fear my next read may be disappointing because I don’t think it will be as wonderful. This should be on everyone’s TBR list!
Summer hates Christmas. Noel loves all thing Christmas. Summer runs a travel agency. Noel just opened a Christmas shop next door. These two are destined to be enemies. But Noel can’t resist perusing Summer. Can Summer and Noel find common ground, or are their differences just too big?
I picked this book up hoping it would put me in the festive feels, but sadly it did not. If I am honest, I was a left somewhat disappointed. While Christmas is in the title, I wouldn’t say this is a Christmas story. Instead I would say this is Christmas adjacent. Most of the story takes place during autumn and has little to do with the holiday other than Noel’s shop and one or two chapters.
I was also taken aback by how heavy this book turned out to be. I anticipated a much lighter, fun read from the title and description. However, the book primarily deals with the breakdown of a family and the lasting side effects. For instance, Summer, has a rather hard exterior that often leads to angry outbursts, primarily directed at Noel. She was a difficult main character for me to get behind and with the absence of proper character development, I was left wanting more.
If there is one thing I have learners during the course of my reading journey, it’s that not every book is a perfect fit for me. But, I wanted to mention it because it just might be the perfect book for someone else.
Thank you to a Netgalley, Boldwood Books, and Rachel Dove for gifting me a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
What a wonderful book!!! I picked it up because it's said "Christmas" on the cover and I love Christmas books but if you are not into Christmas books don't worry, you will still love it as it's not so much about Christmas. Of course there are some Christmas elements here and there but this book not about Christmas. I really enjoyed reading it from first to last page! This book is sometimes serious and a bit sad, and sometimes it's hilarious and funny. A very good balance! And of course there is a romance going on which I loved! I really recommend this book to anyone who love a good enemies to lovers romantic story wether you like Christmas books or not! It's for both!!! 4 stars out of 5 for this book for me!!!
I am afraid I didn’t get hooked on Summer at all. I know there are people who don’t like Christmas, but it wasn’t for me.
It’s very rare I don’t read a book once I’ve started it, but after her outburst at the pub, it didn’t inspire me to carry on and wait for a change. I returned the book.
I know we are all different and entitled to our own view. Glad there are many people who enjoyed it, as I appreciate the work the author put into it.
Sorry but I couldn’t get past the hideous behaviour of the heroine who seemed to have serious anger management and mental health issues. Her behaviour to Noel when they first meet is criminal. I feel really bad about being so negative knowing how hard the author will have worked on this - but a heroine who is so violent, abusive and unreasonable is not a heroine I am interested
Well well well well...... What do we have here? As many of you know I absolutely love Christmas books and can't wait to get my hands on them, BUT this two star rating makes me feel so guilty and heart broken to rate a "Christmas" book this low. Summer Hates Christmas written by Rachel Dove is NOT YOUR TYPICAL CHRISTMAS BOOK. The cover definitely had me fooled, it's way heavier than the cover portrays. I'm not really sure why this author would have this beautiful cover on this book when it has NOTHING to do with Christmas. I have heard really good things about Rachel Dove's books, but this one just wasn't for me, but on the bright side I won't let this stop me from reading her books. I know not every book is going to be unicorns and sprinkles, but why portray a Christmassy cover when the story has nothing to with Christmas at all? I have seen many people stating the same thing I have said, but I knew I had to read this book before I can make my own judgement. Please don't let this review stop you from reading this book, you may have better luck than I did, but these are just my own opinions and how I felt about this book. Like I said in the beginning, I truly feel guilty rating a book so low.
THANK YOU TO NETGALLEY AND BOLDWOOD BOOKS FOR AN ARC OF THIS BOOK IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW!!!!!!!!
⚠TRIGGER WARNINGS⚠ -Physical abuse -Verbal abuse -Depression -Cheating (mentioned, but off page) -Alcoholism (mentioned, but off page)
Summer Hastings absolutely hates Christmas, She loves sunshine, the beach, running her travel agency, and sending people off to their dream destinations. Summer hasn't really had an easy life, her mom was emotionally abusive, which caused Summer to miss out on a lot of things. Handsome and charming, Noel Pritchett moves his pop up Christmas shop into the store right next to Summer's travel agency business, when Noel does this Summer just sees red, what could this possibly mean? Is Noel a red flag? Noel LOVES Christmas, but he likes Summer too and she HATES Christmas. If Noel can break through the anti Christmas armor Summer has surrounded herself with then Noel can really show Summer that Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year. Noel has more questions than answers, but as he gets to know Summer those answers will start revealing themselves as to why Summer hates Christmas so much, can Noel be that person that shows Summer what Christmas is all about? I totally understand why Summer hates Christmas, but she acted so childish when Noel opened his Christmas pop up shop, Summer literally kicked his Christmas tree.
Summer Hates Christmas is a fun, reverse grumpy sunshine romance.
I love an excellent grumpy sunshine romance, so when I read the synopsis for this book and saw that it was a reverse grumpy sunshine (meaning the heroine is the prickly one), I knew I needed to read it. I enjoyed reading this book. The plot is interesting, the characters are likeable and real, and of course, I love a book set in a small English town. When I started reading this book, I figured I would be in for one of those typical charming English romances, and well there are charming moments in this book. There are also a lot of more serious moments and themes that are woven throughout the story. Summer has to deal with some challenging family issues that have dictated how she can live. Rachel dives into issues like severe social anxiety and agoraphobia and does so with a lot of thought and care. This will be the perfect book for readers who want to read a holiday book but don’t want to be bombarded with all things Christmas. Christmas is present in the book, but it isn’t all-consuming; it really is just there as a catalyst for conflict between Summer and Noel. I loved the depth and charm the secondary stories added to this book. I felt just as invested in Jean and Jim’s relationship and loved those sweet moments between them.
I enjoyed the relationship between Summer and Noel. There are some fun antics between the two as they wage a mini-war against each other. Noel is a sweetheart, and that man works hard to get past Summer’s prickly attitude. I loved that he doesn’t just dismiss her as a cold hearted bitch; instead, he realizes she is going through something and stands by her. The chemistry between these two is nice, and even though I enjoy the more traditional grumpy sunshine trope, I did enjoy the relationship between these two.
Summer Hates Christmas is a sweet and fun English romance.
As a girl who loves Christmas more than anything, I was intrigued to read this book. I wish, for that reason, I had enjoyed it way more than I did.
From the first chapter, I could not stand Summer. Her character came across as a spoiled b*tch who had a serious anger problem. The fact that she just shoved Noel's ice cream cone in his face, shoved over his Christmas tree, and kicked his bins outside his store is behavior I would expect from a child - certainly not from a business owner. She has definitely been through some stuff, but that is not an excuse for her behavior, in any way, shape or form. I wanted to be a bigger fan of Noel's, but he seemed to be a bit of a pushover. I think Avril was adorable, but there were major hints about her that led to the "plot twist" at the end of the story.
The romance in the story came way out of left field - one minute Summer literally hates Noel, and then she's all about him? I'm not buying it. We also kept switching perspectives - and not just between Summer and Noel. No, no...we had chapters from the perspectives of Summer, Noel, Angie (her mom), Jean (her friend), Ronnie (her dad), AND even part of a chapter from Jim's perspective. It was all too much, and unnecessary. In addition, the book has a lot of British slang in it (which isn't a huge deal), and the author is clearly anti-Trump (not saying I support him, just that it was mentioned more than once).

This was such a sweet and emotional story. At first, I thought it would only be an enemies to lovers romance (which it is), but there are so many other themes. Familial relationships, finding your voice, and healing after trauma.
Summer lives a very mundane life. Everyday she reports to work at her travel agency, to book everyone else fabulous vacations abroad while she is stuck at home. She lives with her Mom, who turned into a recluse after Summers Dad left home. Her Mom will not leave the house, answer the phone, or even get the mail; so Summer spends most of her time not at work doing everything for her Mom. When a new shop opens next door, Summer is horrified to meet Noel; a real life Christmas Elf. He has opened a shop selling everything Christmas related, and there is nothing more Summer hates more than Christmas.
From the first time they met, Summer can’t stand this man, but for some reason Noel finds himself attracted to Summer. As they two inevitably begin to spend more time together, they find themselves falling in love. But Summer finds it difficult to manage this new relationship, when she has so many responsibilities at home, taking care of her Mother. And anyways, Noel is leaving at the end of the year; so what’s the point of being together? Summer and Nate’s story was real and raw. We got to see their relationship develop and flourish, but also see Summer grow as a person, as well as her and her Mom healing from the past.
The end of this story was seriously sooo so good, it could not have been better. If you’re looking for a sweet and emotional Christmas time read with an HEA, this is the one!
Summer Hates Christmas has been re-issued by author Rachel Dove and Boldwood Books. It is marketed as an enemies-to-loves grumpy/sunshine romantic comedy and has a cute cartoonish cover. I saw advertisements for it on Facebook and requested a review copy. This is a rare “do not recommend” review for me, based on its marketing.
The heroine, Summer Hastings, is the owner of a travel agency in coastal England called Summer Loving. Unfortunately, she is unable to travel because she is the caretaker for her mentally ill mother. When Summer was a young girl, her beloved father, Ronnie, cheated on her mother and abandoned their family. As a result, her highly capable mother, Angie, quit her job and became a recluse, and Summer began hating Christmas. Summer enables her mother’s narcissistic behavior and acts emotionally immature as well; both ladies are in severe need of counseling.
Noel Pritchett is a handsome and charming owner of a pop-up Christmas shop that relocates to the empty space next door to Summer. When he first encounters Summer inside his store, Forever Festive, she berates him and knocks his Christmas tree over, breaking several ornaments. Later that evening they run into each other at a bar, and after a shared drink, she insults him again. Summer’s behavior is not “grumpy”; she is abusive and violent.
I hope that I have provided enough description of why Summer Hates Christmas is not an entertaining rom-com. Noel is a very likeable character, but I wondered why he was at all interested in Summer. Other secondary characters, particularly neighbors custodian Jean and homebuilder Jim, were far more engaging.
