My life is a hot mess.

Single, working, and raising two daughters, it’s a miracle I get us up, dressed, and fed every morning. Forget about dating—nobody’s got time for that. Even if love hadn’t left me jaded, I’m not settling for anything less than perfect this time around.

Lucky for me, the perfect man just happens to work in my office. But there’s just one small problem: he’s my boss, and is totally off limits. But hey, if it’s meant to be, it’ll find a way, right?

Then a night out with friends turns into a night in with the walking-talking bad boy cliche of a bartender. It’s just one night. No harm, no foul, right?

Except when the hot bartender turns out to be my boss’s trouble-making brother, who wants more than just one night with me. The more I resist the spark between us, the more I find myself wanting him too. Which puts me in the middle of what could be the biggest sibling rivalry of the century.

Life is messy.

And love?

Well, love is even messier.

HOT MESS is book one in the LOVE IS MESSY series.

HEA: Not telling

I love Emily Goodwin and this book was romantic and sweet! What happens when a divorced mother of two has an one night stand with her boss's brother? Chaos ensues!
I loved the writing and Luke, our main hero, has to be one of my favorite book boyfriends ever. His character and kindness made the book for me. I would have liked to see the book's ending in one installment but I am very curious to see where the author will take her characters next.
If you want something light but entertaining and well written, then I recommend this book.

Super cute hero, super relatable single mom heroine, great chemistry, awesome story, PLAIN CRUEL CLIFFHANGER.
I advise you get the second book in the series before starting this, I mean, unless you want to have a coronary.

First things first: #CoverWin and #TitleWin >> because life can really be just one big Hot Mess!!

Second: See that title up there ... yeah, the one that says Duet ... don't be surprised the story doesn't end here :)

This is a really romantic, sexy and sweet story. Lexi and Luke have some serious hurdles to jump personally before they can even begin to commit to each other and I think that's what captivated me the most. Neither was/is perfect. They are real and relatable. AND the hot mess begins from page one! LOL

The story will finish in March when part 2 comes out but there really is no need to wait. This isn't an angsty filled twisted story that you HAVE to get to the end immediately ... it's a fun and flirty romantic story :)

Review for both books in the Duet:

A sweet and hot love story that becomes frustrating too many times!

Sweet and likable characters that become annoying too many times!

A light and fun book that drags and drags and keeps on dragging some more!

A duet that must definitely have been ONE BOOK!

***********************************************

The plot & the characters:

Lexi is a hot mess with a demanding job, two kids, an as*hole ex and financial problems. Since her divorce, she hasn't had time to date. She is an editor in a publishing company and has a crush on her boss, Cole, who never mixes his job with his personal life, so nothing has ever happened with him.

***********************************************

One night, Lexi decides to join the dating world. She goes out with her friends to a bar to possibly find a one-night stand. There she meets a sexy barman with tattoos. Luke is handsome, hot and he wants her. So, she gives in to the temptation and goes home with him and they have an awesome night as they have explosive chemistry.

***********************************************

Their one-night stand becomes more and they start dating. However, there is a problem. Lexi realizes that Luke is her boss Cole’s brother and they hate each other. Until they discover it, she hides this fact. Her reasoning is she believes that what she is having with Luke won’t last and why bother? She also doesn’t tell Luke that she is a divorced woman with 2 kids.

The surprising thing is when Luke learns she has been hiding all these things from him, he doesn’t get angry. He is so sweet and understanding. He really develops feelings for Lexi and wants to be a part of her life with her kids.

***********************************************

Cole acts like a total as*hole and tries many times to separate them. What is more annoying is Lexi is so gullible that she believes him every time he lies to her. She believes every and anything someone tells her. Just pathetic!

***********************************************

And when she doesn’t act gullible, then, she is annoying with her endless assumptions and doubts. Lexi makes her own assumptions about what Luke wants in his life and this also creates the unnecessary drama in the book. She doesn’t believe that a single hot guy who is so sweet and tender would really want a relationship with her as she is divorced and has 2 kids. She constantly assumes Luke will leave her soon. She can ask questions to Luke and learn what he thinks about the things she is worrying about but no, she goes and assumes the worst all the time.

***********************************************

I dislike people who are easily influenced by what people tell them before even checking the credibility of this information and Lexi is just that person! Her gullibility and insecurity cause her to make stupid decisions and the couple breaks up too many times and gets back together when Lexi learns the truth and believes Luke.

All the break-ups of the couple could have been avoided with just simple communication with one another.

***********************************************

The fact that Lexi believes Cole’s lies all the time is unbelievable. Every time Luke explains the truth, she sees that Cole is trying to separate them with his lies; however, being the most gullible person she is, she believes Cole the next time.

One time, when she believes that Luke is guilty of something because Cole told so, she even blocks his phone number without giving him the opportunity to explain. Then, she goes and asks that other woman about the truth and she believes her! Just unbelievable. She believes Luke is innocent when that other woman says so, instead of asking the man she loves. If I were Luke, I would never ever forgive her for her constant mistrust.

I lost count of the times I wanted to smack some sense into Lexi.

***********************************************

This heroine is constantly pathetic. One time, she hears something behind doors and assumes the worst and leaves Luke without even asking if her assumption is true. So very frustrating unnecessary drama!

***********************************************

***********************************************

Luke is perfect %90 of the time but he makes the same mistake twice and it is borderline childish. He leaves town without explaining where he goes, and of course, Lexi thinks he has left her. He comes back and explains why he had to go and where. She forgives him and they are happy again but this doesn’t change that they both act immaturely.

***********************************************

This duet could easily have been one book with appr. 250 pages. It is stretched so very unnecessarily with everyday stuff. The fact that there is not much going on makes the books dragging.

There is too much work stuff, too much family time with lunch & dinners. Add to them the times they play video games, watch movies and play with the kids.

Also there are lots of work-related meetings and illnesses of the children or grand parents.

There are so many times Lexi prepares lunch for kids before she takes them to school or there are too many times Lexi takes them to bed and Luke reads them stories.

There is too much talk about the books Lexi is editing and also about the authors of these books (who goes indie, whose book is being made a movie etc).

***********************************************

Well, also there is too much sex & too many break-ups of the couple. Because the sex scenes are all alike and they all feel the same (nice enough - nothing special), I thought the number of them was too much.

As for the break-ups, they were too many because of the stupidity of the characters. There are too many, "I will always..." and "I will never..." promises that they break all the time.

***********************************************

Luke’s brother and Lexi’s boss Cole is a character that seems too flat, and also too childish with his hatred and evil intentions. His lies and temper tantrums reminded me of a five-year-old child whose apple candy has been taken away from him and in our case, no one has taken anything from him.

He never showed an emotional interest in Lexi but after Luke has her, he starts to try to take her away from him. A very unbelievable character… Just doesn’t make sense.

And when the truth about his hatred is explained in the end, I said, “Huh, that was it?”. One simple five-minute conversation could have prevented all this time lost with hatred.

***********************************************

One more point:

I, for the love of God, have no idea why one would marry Russel and stay married to him and why one would be stupid enough to have 2 children with him.

Lexi's ex, Russel, is really a piece of work! He was never good enough to date or marry!

***********************************************

Here is one sweet and one annoying quotation from the book:

"But we can figure it out. Together.”
“It’s a lot of baggage. Are you sure you want to be part of it?”
“Yes. I have my own baggage. And whatever you’re going through…let me help you. We’re not meant to go through life alone.”
“I fucking love you.” I kiss Lexi, and the missing piece clicks into place.

***

He’s my boss. And I’m falling for his brother.
Wait, what?
Falling?
Luke?
Me?
No.
Fuck. Yes. I was.
Was.
But I can’t.
Shouldn’t.
I need someone who’s committed, someone who wants a steady relationship. Luke says he’s not seeing anyone else, and I want to believe him. But…I just don’t see why Cole would lie.

***********************************************

Safety:

Safe with no cheating except for one time .

***********************************************

Writing:

1. Dual point of view

2. Simple and flowing but sometimes too repetitive

3. Too many editing mistakes (It is also ironical that a book that has a heroine who is a book editor has so many editing mistakes! As a teacher, I had a hard time stopping myself to take a red pen and correct all these mistakes.)

The book did NOT just end that way!!!

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

This story literally stuck to the name of the title of the book -Hot Mess!

Lexi is a single mom of two little girls and divorced from her super A-Hole of an ex-husband.
Lexi can barely keep it together on a day-to-day basis, struggling to give her a daughters a stable loving home and focus on her editing job.

Besides having naughty thoughts about her good-guy boss, Cole, Lexi is starting to feel the effects of being divorced and lonely. With the suggestion and help of her friends, Lexi decides it's time to start dating again - or find someone to cure her of her dry spell.

Out on the town and in a bar, Lexi seems to have caught the eye of the bartender.

Welcome bartender - Luke.
Luke is new to NYC, living with his brother that he hates, and running from something in Chicago (that we really have no clue about).

When these two decide to give things a twirl on the first night after meeting - it's just full speed ahead, rapidly.

Luke makes Lexi feel like she's never felt before - sexy, full of life, allowed to have some fun...

That is until the next morning when Lexi makes a grim discovery - Luke's brother is her boss, Cole.

This story was well put together, all very Insta-everything and yet, left you wanting more (literally because it ended in a cliffhanger).

What's to come next?
Will Lexi put Cole in his place once and for all? Will we finally learn what the hell had Luke running from his life in Chicago? Who the heck is Caroline? Why is Russell (Lexi's ex) such a massive douchenozzle?

Guess it's on to the next book for me to find out.

Alexis is a hot mess with two young daughters and her hectic dream job as an editor all while dealing with an ex who still treats her like dirt. She has been alone since they split and since the divorce save for one bad date set up by her mother. Her only feeling about the opposite sex is the crush she has on her boss. Cole.

So when her friends get her to agree to a night out and the hot bartender is looking her way, a few drinks make her ballsy and she attempts a one night stand. Luke is hot and sexy and there night of sex is off the charts but in the morning when she heads to the kitchen she is thrown for a loop as Cole is there. Cole and Luke are brothers!

Luke is on the run and has no plans to stay in NY. An ex firefighter from Chicago he is shocked with his attraction and feelings for Alexis. When he meets her kids it grows even more. But his past and his feuding with his brother will pose serious problems for the couple.

Cliffy as this a 2 book series. I really enjoyed the book and the characters. Like the storyline and steamy, hot, spicy sex.

W.T.H!!!!! First of all I didn't see that cliffhanger coming, sorry readers I hate to spoil it but yep. Which leads me to part two, I can't WAIT for Book two!!!

Lexi is a divorced mom of two little girls that meets hot bartender Luke on a much needed girls night out. One thing leads to another and one night stand turned into more. The only problem is that Luke is Lexi's boss, Cole, younger brother.

Cole is a world class prick the minute he finds out his brother is dating Lexi. Lexi ex is a selfish bastard and Luke was all alpha and swoony and smoking hot!! Lexi was too soft and at times I felt like shaking her and wishing she would have more of a backbone and speak up.

Putting those issues aside, the way Lexi and Luke relationship developed will have you rooting for them. And the ways Luke and Lexi girls bonded, priceless ❤️.

I can't wait to read the conclusion to this one.

Loved this book. It is a great book about a divorced woman with two girls that decides to go for a night full of hot, meaningless sex. She hasn't had any since her divorce and she needs to get back out there. Lexi and a couple of girlfriends decide to go for drinks and there is the most gorgeous bartender that takes their order. Lexi is a little unsure about herself and it takes a little while to realize he is attracted to her. Upon much persuasion Lexi decides to hang around until closing and her and the bartender decide to go to his place. Lexi and Luke's attraction for each other is out of this world and they have a wonderful night together. Lexi feels it's a one night thing but their attraction is to strong and the two starting seeing each other. There is something off with Luke but Lexi doesn't want to push things, after all he is gorgeous and the sex is amazing.
Lexi soon finds out that her boss is Luke's brother and he doesn't like the two dating, in fact he doesn't like Luke at all, their relationship is off but she's not sure why. Things heat up with Lexi and Luke but something is fixing to come between them, Lexi just doesn't know it. I can't wait to read book 2 to see what's going to happen.

I want more!!!
Hot Mess is the first book of a series. Emily Goodwin is a new author for me and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading Hot Mess.

"I want to believe I have a soul mate out there whose love is the kind of love I read about in romance novels. But...I thought I had it once, and I was wrong. "

Lexi is a divorcee, mom of two adorable girls who works as an editor for a big publishing company. She is trying to manage her work, her love for books and her duties as her mother but things are not easy for her. With all of that , she forgot about enjoying life and essentially about dating.
She has a crush for her boss , Cole but will never do anything about it.

One night, she goes out with her girlfriends and ends by having a one stand with the sexy bartender- Luke.

"Luke is a unicorn. Rare and mythical, they just don't exist. Granted, I don't know him well, but from what I've seen, he's a nice guy who is easy on the eyes "

Two problems- Luke wants more and so does she .... until she finds out that he is the brother of her beloved boss!
Life is going to get messy from this moment.

Overall, Hot Mess is a funny, engaging, hot and heartfelt story.

Emily Goodwin.. you naughty minx! I did not expect that ending and I did not realize this was a duet... but holy smokes! What an amazing book that captivated my heart and left me with a wicked hangover.

Hot Mess was a sexy, sweet, fun, intense, and passionate romance that captivated me cover to cover. This book was so good... edgy, smoldering, and not what I expected at all. This book took me on a journey that had twists, turns, laughs, smiles, and moments where I thought my kindle would overheat and have steam coming out of it.

Lexi and Luke.... they are about to find out how complicated love and life can really be. Sometimes you find love in places and with people you never see coming. Sometimes you have to take a chance despite consequences. Sometimes life gets messy and throws twists you never see coming. But sometimes... just maybe... life will give you exactly what you didn't know you needed... in the best kinds of ways.

Despite that kindle throwing cliffhanger, this book rocked.

I highly recommend this book.

Does this drama really need two books? I swear the author could've done this book in 1.

As a mother of two young daughters Lexi hasn't had time to date. It's been two years now since she got a divorce but she hasn't found the time to go out and meet someone new. Not after the abuse she suffered from the man she had given herself to for five years. But that changes when a hot one night stand becomes more. This man is everything and more than she could ever possibly dream of...can she really let him in?

Luke is running away from all his problems. He left his life behind in Chicago and is now staying with his brother, twin brother. And they both hate each other. He's use to the whole one night stand fiasco, but why is this one little blonde different? He can't seem to get her out of his head. But of course, she's his twin brother's employee.

Luke and Lexi's story is very sweet. Not sure if I'll read the next one. Maybe when I have more time.

Wow! Hot mess is right! Way too much drama. Between Lexi's idiot ex-husband and Luke's sneaky brother, Cole. Someone is going to end up in jail. But Luke and Lexi aren't totally innocent either.

If your brother is out to get you and can cost your girlfriend her job, why are you taking stupid risks and committing lewd acts in his office building? This is one hot mess and a cliff hanger as well!!!

1. Luke the way he treated the two daughters of h are absolutely warmed my heart

I can’t listed so many wrong thing about this book but let’s begin with a single mom which having two daughters going out for the first times finally decided to have ONS with no such self respect and putting her safety first out for those two girls at home by having unprotected sex and just asked the guy the morning after if he clean of Not

Wow just wow …. Dare I mentioned the mystery of conflict two brothers which live together like bitching around everyday but have no times to talks all the issues through , this conflict are just so made up and beyond I can’t patch up a logical reason for it that drag the whole book and left cliffhanger

Lexi is struggling to handle the heavy load she has on her shoulders. Recently divorced, becoming a single mother and having to go full time as an editor at Black Ink Publishing is proving there isn’t enough hours in the day. But despite all of that, she is the happiest she has been in a really long time. She’s escaped her suffocating and debilitating marriage and is on the way to slowly rebuilding herself

Lexi is finally ready to get back out there, not necessarily letting anybody get emotionally close, but she is more then ready to let someone get physically close, she’s ready to get back in that saddle.

Lexi first set eyes on Luke, at the bar where he works, while on a rare girls night out. Ready to saddle up, Lexi takes the plunge. Little does she know, her introduction back into the world of adult activities, her one night refresher course, is about to get slightly more complicated then she anticipated.

I like Lexi from the start. She is trying so hard to keep afloat. She fought to keep her kids in the divorce and she won and you can see the immeasurable love she has for her little girls, Grace who is 6 and Paige who is 3. Although she cant spend the time she wants to with her girls, and she’s had to go fulltime at work and still doesn’t have enough money to make her stop worrying and she’s still working on fixing herself after her assface of an ex-husband crushed her and she’s not getting anywhere enough sleep because of trying to fit everything in. She’s happy. And that’s what I love about her. Even though she has so many reasons to be angry and sad and to just give up, she doesn’t: Lexi looks at the things she’s got, her girls, a job she loves, great friends and family, it’s enough. And I love that!!!! Her positive attitude on life is something I wish more people had. It’s a trait I think we could all benefit from. In the book she sometimes thinks she’s failing but she is 100% winning, no doubt about that!!!!

I also like seeing Lexi really come into herself as the book develops, with Luke’s and her family and friend’s support and love, she’s growing in confidence and finally getting the happiness she wants and deserves.

Introducing Luke Ladies and Gentlemen.
HOT. TATTOOED. MUSCLEY. SEXY MESSY HAIR. STRONG FLIRTING GAME.
What more could you ask for really?
Well, add super supportive, caring, sensitive, great with kids and a love for dogs, fire-fighter and can cook!!! DREAM MAN ALERT
We meet Luke living at his brother’s house: his brother who happens to be Lexi’s boss, Cole, who she just so happens to have the BIGGEST crush on.
Luke grows on me and I fall for him more and more as the book goes on. He’s got this bad boy image and Lexi stereotype’s him that way for much of the first half of the book, but he proves her and me wrong, he’s not your typical ass hole but you’ve gotta love him anyway sort of guy. He’s hot as hell and is all man, but has the personality traits to match. I love his supportive nature and the way he just takes everything on bored, Lexi’s kids and divorce, and likes her more for it. He builds Lexi up and in return, Lexi has helped Luke see that life isn’t as bad as he originally thought.

Luke and Lexi’s relationship is so so so lovely. They both go in thinking of it as just a one nightstand, but right from the beginning it’s like they see something in each other, something they can both relate too, maybe being a little bit lost and lonely. Its not an instant Love but its is definitely an instant connection and deeper attraction. It then develops with such ease and flows so well, its just lovely to read. Their both working through some issues, but with each other it’s easier to get through the day.
I LOVE that its told in dual perspectives, so we can see both sides, see how they both feel, I’m glad it wasn’t just told from just one of their views.

Now there are 2 assholes in this book.
Russell, her ex–husband is a waste of space. The way he talked to Lexi, practically destroying any self-confidence she had, making her doubt her ability as a woman and then being a deadbeat dad. When Grace talks about not liking spending time with them, it was heart-breaking.
Cole, is our second resident asshole. We don’t find out why he has this deep hate for Luke, but it’s definitely there and it’s like his life mission to make Luke just as miserable as himself. I also hate that he all of sudden wants Lexi now, sees how amazing she is, just because Luke is with her. IT DOES NOT WORK LIKE THAT!!! If you couldn’t see what was in front of you for years, you can’t come running when she’s finally found someone! DICK!!!

There is mystery through the whole of the book however. Luke moved from Chicago to New York. We find out that he pretty much just upped and left without explanation and he’s struggling with what happened there. He has a woman calling him, but we don’t know who she is or why and that’s pretty much all we know, we get little drippings throughout the book, but not enough to figure out what the story is there, but its more than enough to keep you intrigued.

AND HOLY MOLY THE ENDING! Everything was up in the air, I don’t know where anyone stands and the mystery factor has rocketed by like 100000. Great ending.

Overall the book is a really lovely, steamy, little bit of a mysterious read. All of the characters are realistic and believable and it just makes you smiles and cry and feel everything their feeling.
WILL DEFINITLEY BE READING THE SECOND BOOK (its out March 1st)

If I’m being honest the only reason I picked this book up was because it was free, and i wanted to venture out of my comfort zone when it comes to books. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this read.

The MC is relatable and flawed, although it was very realistic in some aspects it was very unrealistic in others, but that didn’t keep me from reading. I did have a few issues with the writing but it was overall decent. There weren’t many issues to overcome, no twists or turns, the plot itself didn’t kick in until near the very end, but with all the steamy romance in between it was hard to put down.

I decided to give this book 4 stars because it was a quick & fun read, even with its share of flaws I enjoyed the love story and honestly didn’t mind that nothing terrible happened to them because I loved them together.

This is the first book in a series and although I’m not rushing to get my hands on the second installment (even with that cliff hanger), Hot Mess was a pretty solid read.

I was pulled right into this story. This story contains heartbreak, pain, secrets, and suspense.

This is Lexi and Luke's story. Lexi is a single mother with two daughters. She is an editor and has fantasies about her boss but he is not for her. When she meets Luke out at a bar she knows she needs at least one night with him. Things get compilated right from the start. He is her boss’s brother. They don’t get along. But will that make a different when it was supposed to be one night? When her boss starts acting weird she must wonder why. The more time she spends with Luke the more she falls but is he falling or planning to run as soon as he can?

I loved these characters and the side characters. I felt I could connect with the characters and the story was a great read. Book ends on a cliffy so you will need to get the next book releasing in March.

I highly recommend this book and can’t wait for the next story from this author.

Emily Goodwin is the queen of cliffhangers.

I've never been a fan of them, but when it comes to her writing, I just can't get enough. I started reading Hot Mess at 1am because I couldn't sleep... it is now 6am and I NEEEED MORE! The whole single parent, hidden past, family angst really does it for me. I felt Lexi's working single mom struggles. I felt angst and worry over Luke's past. I felt their passion-- it practically spills from each page. Now I'm freaking out because I need to know what's next for these two!

My wonderful friend who I thought loved me sent me this. It ends in a cliffhanger. I have a love/hate relationship with cliffhangers. As in I won't read the book unless they're all out. Nope, I have to wait for the duet to this one. I. Have. To. Wait. I'm not a very patient person, but I so much loved this book I will make an exception. ;) Interested in seeing what book 2 brings.

You know, I really enjoyed this book. From the very beginning we are swept away by Lexi's story as she struggles to juggle being a single parent and working full time. Add a sexy as sin bartender and what was supposed to be a one night stand and you get one hell of a hot, funny and charming read.

Lexi is an open book, I loved her from the get go and admired the way she tackled everything she was struggling with. She was the definition of a 'Hot Mess'.
Luke on the other hand is a complete and utter mystery. Completely closed off and only gave a few little tidbits of information throughout the book.

Luke and Lexi's chemistry was off the charts but you could also see the way they really felt about one another.

But that ending...everything is up in the air. Questions swarming and truths needing to be uncovered, I will be waiting with baited breath until the next book.

I need answers!!!

Overall a great book which had me laughing and swooning and wanting to smack someone for being an utter dick.
A definite worthwhile read.

DNF’d at 20%. This needed some editing. Like a lot. Bright blue pupils?! Really? The heroine also had a LOT of drinks during the meet cute. Like, too many for consent to be ok. I’m not anti-drinking but the hero is a bartender so for them to keep interacting she just kept drinking. Then she lied about having kids? To a one night stand? Then they had oral and PinV sex without protection. HARD PASS. THEN I WAS SO ANNOYED I READ REVIEWS ON GOODREADS AND ITS A CLIFFHANGER. No, thank you.

Hot Mess is right!

Started reading this book ,which is really very good.I really got into it until the very end ! That’s where the author gets you, because you see,it doesn’t end! It just leaves you hanging! And I can’t stand books that do that !No,I’m not going to buy your next book!

I really enjoyed this one. The title is appropriate because things are a bit of a hot mess. Not between Luke and Lexi, but their pasts and how they're lurking in the background. I can't wait to see what happens next in this Duet. I have a feeling it's about to get messier.

2 hot men....

Two brothers and one woman. She loves one of them. But they both want her. Oh and a cliff hanger. I hate cliff hangers. But this book is good. So I have to keep reading. Oh who is Caroline

Cliffhanger. I will never rate a book higher than a one with a cliffhanger ending. I hate that, because it was a great book and I would love to see what happens to the characters. But I refuse to buy a book because I was “forced” into it.
