When Queen Victoria stepped onto the throne of Great Britain and Ireland in 1837, gone were the days when the monarch had supreme authority over the kingdom. Victoria ruled at the head of a government with which she was meant to converse, debate, and ultimately guide, and it was a job she sometimes struggled to perform. Victoria described herself as an emotional creature and blamed her gender for what she believed were her shortcomings as a monarch.
The queen suffered emotionally during her childhood and also in the early part of her rule, but despite a few dramatic scandals at court, Victoria came to be loved and respected by the majority of her subjects across the vast British Empire. An unprecedented number of important social and economic changes occurred during Victoria’s 63-year reign, and that span of time has come to signify Britain’s coming of age into modern history.
One of the most important changes experienced by Great Britain between 1837 and 1901 was the population explosion. When Victoria was crowned, there were about 13.9 million Britons; by the time she died, there were an estimated 32.5 million. The sharp increase has been related to modernized methods of medical treatment, sanitation, and social welfare, but each of those industries was far from perfection during the 19th century. Nevertheless, the birth rate increased and the mortality rate fell.

First off I must declare that I don't read a lot of history books. I read this one because I have always been fascinated by the Victorian era especially literature and art. The book gave a good overview of the main topics of the Victorian age. I especially loved the chapters on literature and the occult.
Very interesting synopsis of the period of English queen Victoria's reign. The biography of the queen, progress made in the areas of science, literature, infrastructure, politics and expansion of the empire are delineated. This is a good introduction to this fascinating period not only of English but world history as well. Easy to read and fun, and readily affordable c onsistent with other Captivating History issues.
I wanted to read a book that gave an overview of the Victorian era, when the UK was at its pinnacle of power and achievements. I also wanted to get an understanding as to how Britain was able to take over and rule over all of India. This book was a pedestrian attempt to do this. Some parts were glossed over rather quickly. Others (the section on Jack the Ripper, for example) were written in too much detail that was overkill and totally unnecessary. Overall the book was lame but served my purposes.
Interesting description of various aspects of the Victorian Era. It has been very succinctly put right at the beginning, "the underlying theme of the Victorian era was the search for a balance between, tradition and modernity, Christianity and spirituality, and wealth and poverty". However, what surprises one as a reader is the enormous space provided to Jack the Ripper as compared the exploitation of India during this period by the British .
An excellent overview of the times Queen Victoria reigned over Great Britain and its empire. Insightful and educational with the details that I had forgotten about during this period. "The Captivating Histories Series" bring the subjects they address in details that are understandable.
Good overview of Queen Victoria's unlikely rise to, probably the most powerful woman in the planet. This era greatly influenced the next century with ripples being felt even today. Interesting and worth the time. Check it out.
Essentially a potted history of the Western world from 1837 to 1901 with early emphasis on the personal life of Queen Victoria of England. The table of contents includes sanitation/bacteriology, Egypt/the Suez Canal, cults/spiritism, poverty and even Jack the ripper, plus a lot more. Although the narrative centers on England and the British Empire, much of the Western world was affected by events begun there.
A very good overview of the Victorian era! Flew through it, wish there was more. The most interesting thing I learnt about was the Victorian era post mortem photography trend! Highly recommend
