Vampire Slayer Valen Beauchamp has an old score to settle with Julian Montague. It all started in the year 1733, when Valen narrowly survives an attack by centuries old vampire Julian Montague, and even receives a minor bite when Julian’s teeth scrapes his skin before he manages to get away. The venom from the bite almost kills him, and he soon discovers that Julian is searching for him everywhere to either finish what he’d started or kill him outright. Neither option is attractive to Valen, so he flees to the New World. As time passes and he doesn’t age, however, he comes to realize that the vampire had perhaps not destroyed him, but instead cursed him with an unwanted gift—immortality.

When he learns that victims of deadly vampire attacks are dying in large numbers in Paris, Julian’s home, Valen decides he’s tired of hiding from monsters and travels back to Paris to use his formidable Slayer skills to end this thing once and for all. During a tense confrontation in the dark cellar of an opera house, Valen finds himself mesmerized, overpowered and seduced by Julian and finally succumbs to his charms. And even that wouldn’t be so bad if every vampire slayer in Europe weren’t out now to kill them both. Valen is falling deeper and deeper in love with the vampire while trying to figure out if the vampire who bit him is one of the good guys or not, and if their love will mean his ultimate damnation or his salvation.

This was a fast-paced novella about elder vampire Julian Montague and his mate Valen Beauchamp that were first introduced in Hunger. This story is told in dual POV and is enemies to lovers with plenty of steam, a bit of rough loving and power struggle in the relationship.

The initial meeting between Valen, the human, and Julian, the elder vampire, happens many years before their story starts. Due to Fate, both of them stay alive and live their lives separately for more than a century. Assumptions, thirst for revenge and death bring Valen back to Julian, and that's how their love story starts. While it's insta love for Julian because he as a vampire who recognizes his mate and can't help the pull and the connection that forms between Valen and him. It takes Valen a bit longer to break through all the lies the Vampire Hunters instilled in him throughout the years to see who the real monsters are and that there is a way to exist as a vampire and be happy while at it.

I enjoyed their tempestuous relationship and Valen's internal turmoil about his new life and all that he has left behind. The thing that bothered me was the modern language used in conversations and throughout the book. It was 1883 after all, and the words like teenager or cash among others were not in the vocab, and it really took away from my enjoyment of the story. It got really distracting. Otherwise, it was very enjoyable read. I liked it.

Did Not Finish

DNF 69%.... (I’ve decided not to rate even though I’ve read more that 50%)

Honestly I really wanted to love this. I’ve been looking for a decent vampire MM book for quite some time and nothing had really caught my interest.

Anyways I would best describe this book as “messy”. It was so fast paced and all over the place that it was hard to keep up with. The transition from “hate” to “acceptance” was sloppy and had absolutely no depth behind it.

The sex?.?.?. cringe worthy! Our Vamp is getting ready to turn his MATE, his virgin mate I might add, that he feels the need to protect and cherish, and he just wets his fingers and shoves them in.... (shoves... them... in...) shortly followed by his dick... I don’t think there was any prep in this entire book so far... yea no thanks... It’s incredible un-dude to be shoving things into un-lubed/non-prepped assholes... just saying [cringes in multiple languages...] [repeatedly].

Anyways, I just decided I couldn’t finish... It felt like the authors just had so much they wanted to say and to have happen in the book that it just ended up being over loaded and messy.

Not my thing. 97% of the book is made up of sex scenes and little plot, with an in-depth study of the characters almost non-existent.

I tried. DNF @84%

The plot could have been so deliciously good. Hell, the blurb caught my attention so fast. I was ready. My body and brain were ready.

I was let down. Let down hard.
The pace was all over the place, it was WAY TOO FAST, it was messy. It read like a fanfic.
The sex scenes were another mess. I mean, read this

“Keeping Valen’s mouth busy, he stripped Valen as he moved and hiked him up against it. Pushing Valen’s legs up to his waist, he drove his cock deep up Valen’s ass and thrust hard.”

What the fuck is that? Was that supposed to be part of a straight romance novel?. You do know that assholes don’t self lubricate, right...? You can’t just shove those pants down and stick your penis in and start thrusting like it’s a vagina. All the sex scenes are like this. It’s like this millennia years old vampire is 15 years old and cant wait to shove it in. The sex scenes are fast, no foreplay to hype things up just...ugh.

That’s my review: Just ugh.

My favorite main characters are the ones that "hate" each other, when in reality, the hate is just to hide the fact that they would much rather jump each other's bones, lol.

Exactly the case with Julian and Valen. And OMG! The chemistry between them two is hot! They chase each other while they try to deny how much they burn for one another. And  when they do get together...talk about scorching passion!

𝑰𝒏𝒔𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 is burning need and intense connection between two men that are supposed to be born enemies. Absolutely an intriguing, gripping  story and I loved it!

I am so happy that we get to know about Julian and Valen's story. This is definitely a perfect beginning to this great series. It is great to see how their relationship started and definitely enhanced the other books in this series. It answer questions I had in the other books and I just love the two. Now I am going to reread the other books to get the full experience.

This book was great! The whole series is absolutely awesome! I'm really hoping there will be more in this series. Easily the best reads of the year for me and I highly recommend them.

A prequel of an instant love attraction followed by a forced separation for these 2 destined souls. Julain, A vampire finding his mate and not wanting to let him go, and Valen, a vampire hunter dying who cannot deny his attraction but is hesitant of being a vampire. I love that with Valen's transformation it allowed hot scenes to occur between 2 characters to grow in their relationship in a short time. They help Sacha, a young newly turned vampire who will be kind of like their surrogate son in the future. There is also a connection of, Marchand's Mother and why Julian was unaware of his child. I liked how they became equal partners in the end that shows how they appear in the present story line. Valen's rescue scene of Julian from vampire hunters was awesome.

Amazing start to the series. If you love sexy vampires this is a must for you. I loved how these two came together; definitely a opposites attract/enemies to lovers read for sure. Valen and Julian’s are hot and very stubborn; butting heads almost at every turn. As time goes they come into their own but also see the benefits of having a soul mate by your side. Twist and turns and I can't wait to see more of them later. These two Vampires pop up in Hunger (book 2 of the series). I've read Hexed (book 1 in the series) and that plot has no connection to this Prequel so if you wanted to skip this and jump to book 1 you can and not get confused. I definitely recommend it before Hunger; also not skipping it because it is awesome! Can't wait for the next.

Insatiable made me ravenous

Ever since I first met Julian and Valen In TS McKinney’s Hunger, I wanted to know their story. I’m so happy that Shannon West and TS McKinney teamed up to bring it to us! This story is full of action, heat, and so much love. I adore Valen and Julian and they are my favorites in this series. I really liked how Valen fought his feelings for Julian in the beginning and the battles they had; I need a cold shower. Once Valen accepts his life, he is fierce! The love Julian and Valen have for each other knows no boundaries. I hope we see them again at some point because I don’t want to leave them.

Valen is a poor vampire hunter who comes face-to-face with Julian Montague, head of a large vampire coven. The events of this night have far reaching affects on both men. This is an amazingly hot book with two sexy characters. I was touched with Valen’s struggles to come to terms with the changes in his life and Julian’s loneliness. The two were definitely made for each other. I was looking forward to learning their story after meeting them in book two of the series and am so happy with this book.

Exciting new series

Interesting new series beginning. I loved that Valen was always a bit unsure of the Slayer's teachings so that Julian could reason with him. I'm interested to see where things go in this series and how they develop in New Orleans.

Valen and Julian do not have the best first meeting..or second...or possibly even third. What makes this even more interesting is that there is 150 years between their meetings and things have definitely changed for both of them. As they try to figure each other out and make their relationship work, we find out more about something that was revealed in later books (read them to find out). All I can say is make sure to have a fan and some cold water nearby; you'll need it.

Short but enjoyable

It takes a bit over an hour to read and had some good bits in it. I would recommend reading this book before starting the series. I did it backwards.

I enjoyed this but I would rather it had been a novel with this novella as a part, then more about them in the present time. I love these men!

The cover is better than the book. The writing was clunky with a lot of telling. The sex scenes were fumble bumble tumble. There wasn't enough every day living and relationship development.
