The Dark of Night

Emma Gilbert never imagined she'd have to battle an ancient evil, one whose powers and rage have been building for centuries.

Rabid Reader says, "Once again Jason LaVelle has written an intricate, creepy and yet thought provoking story that keeps you on the edge of your seat... The storyline captures your imagination and sends shivers down your spine...."

More than twenty years have passed since Karen Gilbert was stalked by a demon child intent on her death. Still, she can't escape from dark forces in this world. As her life draws near its end, her body ravaged by the same cancer that took her mother and grandmother before her, she's restricted to a hospital bed. With time running out, she must warn her daughter of the dark forces in the world, those she could never talk about before.

Emma Gilbert is as beautiful and headstrong as her mother, and she's just learned that she's about to be called into battle against an unimaginable evil that has stalked the earth for a millennium. She flounders under the weight of her newfound knowledge, and what it might mean for her life, but she cannot ignore her destiny. Forced into a supernatural confrontation, she discovers the daunting stakes should she fail--much more than her own life.

Jane Straugh says, "The minute I started reading this I was hooked and could not stop reading it. There was excitement from start to finish, lots of twists and turns...."

I was a little confused when I started this book maybe due to not reading The Cold Room. Once the fog cleared and I got into the book it was a pretty good read. Emma is quite the bad as$ but has lots of issues she is trying to work thru especially with the power she is discovering. When she finds out what is going on she steps right up to the plate to get it done. Now all she has to do is figure out what to do with all of this new found power, and she does.

I really enjoyed this book until the ending. That's all I will say as I'm not the type to have spoilers in my reviews.

A completely creepy, captivating book! Jason LaVelle has written a book full of great characters with a lot of depth. All of the characters have a bit of light & dark in them, but don't we all? Great mythos throughout the book. A very interesting take on the age-old good vs. evil story.

This book will definitely make you feel many emotions: hate, love, horror, sorrow, anger, empathy This is a book that won't soon be forgotten! The ending is definitely not what I expected.

Once again Jason LaVelle has written an intricate, creepy and yet thought provoking story that keeps you on the edge of your seat. Even though this book continues the story from the Cold Room, it could just as easily be read as a stand alone. The story quickly draws you into the lives of Emma, the main protagonist, and Karen, her mother and protagonist from the Cold Room. Their mother/daughter relationship is beautiful but also heartbreaking, and you can not help but become invested in Emma's survival as she takes on Amala, the ancient entity her mother encountered years earlier. The storyline captures your imagination and sends shivers down your spine, you will not guess where this story will lead as the author pulls you through the various twists of this intriguing good vs evil tale. The characters in this book are complex and have a duality that is fascinating, making this battle between good and evil not as black and white as you would think. It is a well written book in which the author makes you experience the emotions, hopes, fears, strengths and weakness of the characters very well. From the dichotomy of Amala, to the Steve's beautiful soul and the nastiness of Derek Trump (a psychotic hidden behind a veneer of normalcy), the characters are interesting and have depth. The Dark Of Night captivated me with its thrilling, twisting storyline and fascinating, well developed characters, keeping me turning the pages right up to its surprising end.

I received this book for free, as a review copy. However, whilst I would recommend fans of urban fantasy to give this book a try, I don't think I can do this book justice through a review.

The plot in this book was a nice change of pace, and I felt like the characters had a lot of potential. I particularly liked Steve, the idea of the vengeful demon through many generations, and the historical connection. Whilst there was a level of romance within the book, it was a nice change to see that this was far from central to the plot.

I possibly missed something (I'm usually doing other things whilst listening to audiobooks) or perhaps this is explored further in The Cold Room, however, I also felt that Emma's abilities were not very well explained, to the point where I felt a bit lost. Comparatively, I felt the background of the demon was very thoroughly explained.

Unfortunately, I listened to this as an audiobook and in turn I feel like this has skewed my rating. I don't think the is necessarily the fault of the narrator, I just usually listen to (auto)biographies through audio, which have a very different feel. For this reason, I just couldn't get into the story (even though the ideas and plot itself were interesting), feeling detached and caring very little for what happened to the characters.

I may need to reread this, through the eBook.

In this Paranormal/Horror novel an ancient being of immense evil clashes with a young woman, who is more powerful than she realizes. Emma's mother, Karen, has never told her the truth about her origins and, when she finally does, she is battling advanced cancer-with little hope of survival.

Emma must find a way to rid the world of Amala, the immortal being whom only she can fight. If only she knew how...

The mother/daughter relationship between Emma and Karen is full of love and respect for one another and I loved that. Yet Amala's internal struggle with how much she loved the power she wielded, but grew to hate her immortality, was captivating, as well.

The ending was surprising and I would love to read more novels set in this world.

Well now, Jason LeVelle has written such an intriguing story. Not only does the storyline make you not want to put the book down, but the characters are in a world of their own......a world that makes you afraid but so very intrigued
