This book is another in "The Epic of Flight" series published by Time-Life Books. It highlights those aviators who flew as soldiers of fortune in a number of the world's conflict areas.
The usual stipulations apply-great bathroom reading, shallow as hell-but this one is also ludicrously American-centric. Aside from some brief mentions of pilots of other nationalities and the tale of one Swedish count who fought for various doomed causes in Africa, it solely concerns itself wit the exploits of American mercenary pilots. We get tales of American pilots fighting in Mexico, the Great War, the Russian and Spanish Civil Wars, with the Flying Tigers, and finally in south east Asia. A terribly interesting subject, but I feel like the old Time Life book guys did a worse-than-usual job of summarizing it.
