Borderline Freaks MC #1

Service and Sacrifice

Rate this book
“Thank you for your service” is what we’re taught to say to military men and women in gratitude for our freedoms won at their expense. Less often do we thank their families, those left behind to hold down the fort, to manage the day-to-day struggle of keeping everything up in the air until their loved one returns.

When you can’t count on anyone else to save you, there’s only one real choice.

Amanda lost her husband to war. Alex lost part of himself. Through a series of glancing encounters, Amanda and Alex find reasons to continue on. And together, they’ll discover hope and peace can be found in the most unexpected of places.

Service and Sacrifice was previously released as a short in the Twisted Tales of Mayhem Anthology and has since been expanded and spawned a new series.

This was such as an amazing read as it was heartfelt and emotional and makes you realize we should live our life to the fullness each and everyday.

I have to say I felt the pain that Amanda was living with the author made it feel real and you were right along side her experiencing the loss and heartache she was.

Amanda was a character easy to love and it was apparent from the onset of the story deeply in love with her husband and her heartbreak and loss overwhelming at times.

A chance meeting between Alex and Amanda puts both of them on the path of healing and letting go of ones past and moving forward. The courtship of you could call it between this couple was quite endearing and heartfelt and a little bit scary for both of them.

Alex was a character that you could not help but fall in love immediately and him beginning an ex military soldier himself understood her feelings and what she was experiencing with the loss of her husband but, also admired her for her the strength and determination that it takes to love a military man.

A beautiful story and and even more beautiful ending of a story that definitely tugged at the heartstrings of this reader.

This short read will hit your heart and soul with so much emotion at times you will not be able to stop the tears that will roll down your face. A beautiful story that represents appreciation for both the service by the servicemen and the sacrifice by their loved ones. Two people who have suffered at the hands of this who meet by chance and together form a bond and connection that helps both of them heal. Even though this is a quick read it is ultimately a slow burn romance, one that will heal the soul and free the heart. Monk and Amanda are characters that will have you thinking about them long after the last page has been read. A touching story that is affecting, poignant, passionate and inspirational.

I seriously haven’t read enough of this authors stories. I need to read more especially after reading this amazing story.

This is a short read but a great one. As soon as I started it I didn’t put it down.

Amanda and Alex are two wonderful characters. I kept wanting to push them together lol Fate brought them together when they both were going through a rough time. My heart broke for Amanda. Alex was such a great likeable character.

Can’t wait to read book two in this series.

For a quick read, Monk and Amanda’s story was quite moving. It was emotional, inspirational and so sweet. The longing between the characters felt like a physical thing.

Service and Sacrifice was a story of exactly that. Amanda has mourned the loss of her husband for years and there is no end to how deep her sadness goes. It isn’t until a brief encounter with a biker and the moment of compassion he shows her that she begins to heal. This stranger provided so much comfort in the seconds it took to connect with her. As former military, he understands her sacrifice. His service was cut too short but he’s well aware of what her husband’s service meant to him and he’s seen the devastation reflected on the faces of those he had to inform when their loves ones weren’t coming home.

The depth of emotion in this story was beyond measure. I felt pangs of sadness almost immediately. Amanda’s sadness was palpable on so many levels. The way this story was written, in the short time it took to read it - I literally felt the time span of which the story was told. In just a couple of hours i was along the years journey that it took for Amanda and Monk to finally come together.

Deeply emotional and aww inspiring, this book was an phenomenal read.

This was actually my first book by this author and I have been dying to start a new MC series. This first book wasn't quite what I expected. This was sweet and short and packed in a lot of emotions.

Amanda lost her husband in the service and has been floundering in the years that follow. Unexpectedly on one such heartbreaking anniversary, she encounters someone who will change her future. Monk, a member of the Boardline Freaks, sees this broken woman and can't help but feel for her loss. Over the course of time, this connection grows and helps them both in different ways.

There is not a lot of "MC" in this story but more about these two souls that find each other when the timing was right. Even though it was short a lot was packed into a small package. There were things I would have liked more of but this growing relationship was something sweet that kept me engaged.

Heartwarming second chance romance! I have to say that I really appreciate that after 5 years Amanda was still grieving the loss of her husband. Alex was amazing at giving Amanda the support she needed and the space to go through the stages of grief. Over the years that initial connection stayed with them both. Neither one expecting or looking for love but it found it’s way into their loved. I loved their story and look forward to more!

The fantastic MariaLisa deMora never fails to pen stories that really pull the extreme emotions out of me. And when I say my extreme emotions, I mean tears coming out of my eyes, as that's the thing I don't tend to do. Service and Sacrifice is about two amazing people who have not had it easy in their adult years because of people they love or them being willing to sacrifice it all for freedom. Amanda lost her husband, while Alex lost himself, and yet, fate stepped in. This story is a short(ish) one which packs a great big punch, and frankly, my heart bled for the two of them, the struggles they both faced, and the fact that they were rewarded when the time was right. But how did it all come about?! That's the thing, I'm not willing to go much detail other than they kept finding themselves at the same place at the right time, so yeah, FATE definitely helps those out. How does it all pan out?! Well all I can say is that you really need to one click to find out. You'll never be the same like me, so I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL!

Oh wow... This book just made me sad. I can't even imagine what Amanda went through. This book will literally have your heart breaking, but it will put it back together again, slowly...

After 5years Amanda is still grieving the loss of her husband and she feels like she will never stop. The first time that Monk and Amanda meet is at a gas station surrounded by motorcycles. She isn't afraid just nervous and when she has an encounter with him, man it was hectic for me. The words they exchanged, for people in the service i'm sure it will touch your heart strings. From then this journey they went on was about healing, and not just for Amanda but for him as well.

I think if you dont know what it means to loose someone who was in the service, this book will give you a glimpse into this world. And I for one, dont know how people move on, but all I can say is my heart goes out to you❤❤ This author really touches you with her words in this story and you get so caught up in the story that you actually dont even realise its a MC Story 😊😊 I look foward to the next story in this series

This one will mark the beginning of a series with also having you ponder something even I did not think of much. The characters will bring it front and center touching on areas that for the most part those that are the support of the ones who do it also have their light to shine. This author had me connecting with Amanda and Alex pulling at different parts of the heart. They bare themselves to us but in the same time opening up to something more. One spark when meeting builds and unfolds until they consume us too. By the time you are finished you will have to take a minute to regroup yourself.

Alex and Amanda are both experiencing their own kinda of turmoil when they meet. Is their hesitancy on both their parts? Yes, is a slow burn but boy was it a good one! As always, MariaLisa brings out the best of her stories. You really feel for these characters. You understand their pain and long for them to surrender to the love that they can have together!

I can’t wait for more!

Amazing read!

This story put my heart in so many places. "Thank you for your service" "Thank you for your sacrifice" will stay with me. Both of those statements are so powerful and true! So many do not think about those who have fallen, missing, currently serving, or the veterans but also their families. Thank you for writing this series.

Once I started this book I was hooked. From the very first "Thank You For Your Service" to the very last one, my heart was captured. This was such a heartbreaking and sweet read that I forgot that it had anything to do with an MC. They are definitely different from any of the MC's that I have read, but at the heart of this crew is what they do, what they stand for. I am thoroughly hooked, not only because of the characters, but because of what these guys do. From what I can see, this club is really just beginning, building their members. These guys don't run guns, they don't traffic drugs. What they do is good, honorable and will have your heart twisting in knots. They ride for the fallen, they ride as support and escort for the fallen service men and women to their final resting place.

When Monk meets Amanda for the first time it is at a gas station where she becomes trapped by all of the bikes lining up at the pumps. She isn't necessarily afraid, but more nervous. She hasn't gone in to pay for her gas yet and can't seem to move. When she shoves the money toward Monk saying she has to pay for her gas, he notices something about her. He keeps telling her to park, then pay. She's scared now but when he says "FNG" she realizes he's military. She whispers "oorah and when he whips his head toward her she says "Thank You for your service Marine." His reply; "Ma'am. My duty and honor". The very reply her husband said to people who thanked him for his service. When he walks up to her car he notices her looking down, rubbing her wrist. He notices the tattoo and takes her hand in his, looks and rubs it slowly, also noticing the scar that it tries to hide. He knows....he recognizes the meaning of the tattoo and the pain written in her eyes and asks "Brother?" "Husband" is her reply.

From this point on the story revolves around healing of a shattered heart, healing of a broken body and two souls brought together by a common thread, by pain, by their Service and Sacrifice.

I have no words to explain how much this story touched me. Although it is a work of fiction, we know that out there in the world, many of the things that go on in this book do actually go on in real life. To all of the military personnel out there: THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE! And to the families left at home: THANK YOU FOR YOUR SACRIFICE! My heart is with you all.

I cannot recommend this book more highly. If I could give it more than 5 stars I most definitely would. Do not miss this book, this series. One click it today.

What an amazing start to an MC series. This wasn’t like most of the MC’s books I read, but man did it ever pack a wallop and hit every emotional string in my body. The Boarder Freaks MC is made of of ex servicemen. Men who have all seen the best and the worst of times while serving. These men are all broken in their own ways but have found solace in their brotherhood. They don’t sell drugs or guns or deal in the things a lot of MC’s do but have banded together not only to help each other heal but they have found a purpose in helping the families of fallen service men and women who gave their all as well as others in need of a helping hand.

Amanda is a widow who lost her husband while serving. She is struggling with day to day life and can’t let go of what was to move on. She meets Alex, “Monk”, when the club stops for gas. Monk sees her tattoo, senses her pain and knows immediately that she has recently lost someone. He offers her kindness and comfort like no other, as he too understands. Their friendship grows through chance encounters and their brief times together helps them both to start healing in ways they never dreamed possible.

To say this MC book captured my heart and soul is a total understatement. There aren’t words to describe how heartfelt and tender this book was yet at the same had the mc vibe to it. Simply put this is as amazing book which is the start of what this reader feels is going to be one phenomenal series that I can see myself reading time and time again. Kudos to the author for taking a true to life issues and making it into one amazing storyline.

2 Thumbs up and 5 stars for a book worth way more but 5 stars but it is all they will let me give. I can’t wait to start book 2 titled More than Enough.

Be still my biker loving heart!! Theres a new MC in town and you wont want to miss this!!

Amanda never thought she would be a widow so young but thats the risk that comes with being a military wife. It's been 5 years and she hasn't stopped honoring her late husband in all she does. This isn't the life she was going to live. They had plans and a future but thay means nothing in war. Her husband came home in a bag draped casket and it seems like Amanda hasn't left that day

Alex, or Monk if you ride, served his country proudly until he couldnt anymore. But that service cost him day not only in physical hardship and pain but also back home. Hes spent years closed off from most around him, except his patch brothers.

A chance meeting at a gas station on just the right day opens up the world of possibility both Alex and Amanda had forgotten. Over the next few years, a dance begins of the sweetest slow burn. Both have a lot to let go, work on and work through. With all the sacrifices theyve both made, its amazing they're both still standing. As love comes back into their lives, you won't be disappointed in the changes that come! I adored this story! MariaLisa captured an incredible snapshot into the life of a veteran and all that can affect them but also into the life of a military widow. Emotions are raw in this book and on more then occasion I had to stop to wipe them both for happy and sad moments. Loss is a deep pain and its not easily forgotten or overcome, and both Amanda and Alex have suffered unbelievable loss. I finished this read in one sitting! I promise you wont be disappointed! 5/5

I didn't actually like Monk at first. It took quite a while for me to warm to him. I could FEEL Amanda's pain and discomfort and confusion through the words on pages during her interaction with the gruff biker and former Marine Alex "Monk" Waterman. Even after he manages to unmangle their first encounter I still was a bit salty. This is unusual for me. Generally speaking, I love the male characters right away and have a harder time connecting with the females, but Amanda just pulled at my cold heart and it broke for her pain.

But, don't panic because I firmly believe that everyone is allowed to have a do-over and Monk does well enough to bring me around. Not only does Monk give Amanda something that she needed so desperately and didn't really know it, but he gives himself something too. Time and human contact in the most innocent of ways seem to be the exact thing these two lost souls need. Throw in Monk's bro0thers and we've got the makings for a fabulous read about love and life and heartache/break and learning to make a new, while not forgetting. Learning to give honor and still find that thing you need to fly.

MariaLisa is a heartbreaker but she knits and stitches her reader's hearts back together so beautifully every time.

"Ma'am. My duty and honor."
That was it. That's all it took to stand the hair up on my arms, make my breathe catch in my throat and make me KNOW that Monk / Alex Waterman, would one day become the most important person in Amanda Stewart's life.
"Thank you for your service, Marine."
That may have come before and was just as important, but the fact of the matter is that for Monk....'My duty and honor', came home with him and lived inside of him even after he was no longer in the service. It is part of the life he has built with his club and the way he lives with his brothers and it is most definitely a part of the way he decides to move forward with doing for Amanda...even when she doesn't know.
Monk and Amanda are both so painfully damaged, each in their own way. They are both so terribly alone...again, each in their own way.
THIS love is the most hard won, deserved ending I could've asked for.
I loved every word put down in these pages!
MariaLisa deMora....I'm kinda running out of new praises to sing to the sky....50 stars wouldn't be enough.
Never ever enough!

WOW!! I honestly don't know where to begin!! Service and Sacrifice is book #1 in MariaLisa DeMora's Borderline Freaks MC series and holy hell it is one of the best Military/MC books I have ever read!!
My heart was breaking right from the beginning, I was crying but at the same time I had hope that the broken hearts and souls of Amanda and Alex would finally begin to heal!!
Amanda is a strong women but losing her husband so young had just broke her heart and a piece of her did die with him, so she closed herself off to love!!
Alex (monk) fought in the war but when he left the service he left a piece of his soul over there and now he wasn't living he was just existing!! When they have a chance meeting they became unlikely friends and slowly started to heal eachother!!
Will they get their hard fought for Happily ever after??
You will need to read this amazing book for yourself!! I absolutely loved this book and I highly recommend it, you will not be sorry!!
I wish I could give it 10 stars, but since I can't I will go with another 5 star read by this incredible author!!

Amanda has heard the words, gotten the flag, and now lives without her serviceman husband. All their hopes and dreams destroyed by a sniper’s bullet.
Alex has delivered the words, handed off the flag, and lives with his service-related PTSD. His disability effects his hopes and dreams for the future. It manifest an unexpected way for a love story.
Their love story takes place over a time span of years. No love for first site for these two. It is a nice change. When they meet for the first time, it is the day before the 5th anniversary of her husband’s death. Alex goes beyond for a stranger and holds her. He then meets her at the cemetery and holds her while she cries. Over the years they met or nearly met there.
Social Media plays a large part in the advancement of the relationship. The motorcycle club is oddly enough in the background of the story.
I wished the story was stronger in the MC and more depth was given to the story. I loved it, but after reading RWMC, I wanted way more detail, not just surface details.

Service and Sacrifice
Those two words mean so much. I never thought to stop and think about how “Thank you for your service” would be taken or that “Thank you for your sacrifice” should be given.
Alex is a member of the Borderline Freaks MC. This book focuses on the characters and not so much on the MC life. The struggles of Alex and Amanda due to their service and sacrifice are the focus of this story.
This book had me in tears for a lot of it. My parents and my in-laws are military. To watch as these two characters, Amanda and Alex, get to know each other was almost unbelievable. At first, I thought who would wait that long. Then, I thought, I would’ve waited for my husband; my mom waited for my dad; my mother-in-law waited for my father-in-law. Alex waiting for Amanda to be ready became believable.

I love when authors write about members of the military because they are touching stories. This one is a heartfelt sweet romantic read. Life is filled with happiness for a time and painful memories. One that Amanda and Alex know too well. They are both existing and getting by the best they know how-- dealing with their pain. A chance meeting between the two starts a friendship of a sort that over time develops into a slow burn kind of love that neither were looking for but needed. Love, loss, pain, grieving, hope, healing all come to mind while reading this story. I recommend this book and can't wait to read more in the series! (First read this story when it was part of the Twisted Tales of Mayhem 2019 MMM Special Addition Anthology)

An amazing touching story. Many of the Borderline Freaks MC are former military. They honor the fallen. When a chance meeting brings widow Amanda and Alex, the clubs road captain, along with his brothers to the same place, her soft "oorah, thank you for your service", calmed the impatience of the club members and touched Alex.

It started more meetings. Could the meetings begin their lives again? His wounds may not be on the outside but they are just as real and debilitating.

Watching these two find their second wind in life is touching and gives hope. This is a short read but no less complete in character and storyline. I look forward to more books in the series which I WILL BE READING.

What a wonderful start to a new series. From the first word to the last, I greatly enjoyed this book. This is a beautifully written second chance romance. This author has many skills but the one that makes me giddy every time she releases a book is her phenomenal character development. Her characters aren't simply a mixture of words on a page. She has the ability to reach out and yank me into the world that she painstakingly created full of characters that I laugh, love and mourn with. The characters she created here are relatable, whether a reader has experienced this level of loss before or not. This book has so much to offer it, I cannot imagine anyone not finding something to enjoy.

This book had me in tears from almost the beginning. Amanda’s pain and heartbreak of losing her husband in the line of duty is felt so deep and all of these years later she still can’t move forward (which is understandable BTW). Then she meets a grumpy and rough looking biker at a gas station and her whole life changes. Former Marine Alex (Monk) Waterman just wants the lady at the gas pump to move when she seems frozen from all of the bikers at the gas station. When they both really “see” what the other is about they form an unlikely friendship. Who knew innocent touching and unbelievable good hugs could start heal the broken parts of their souls? I can’t wait to see where this relationship goes from here!!

Amanda is the struggling veteran widow trying to hold everything together while she grieves. However, not all memories are perfect. Alex aka Monk is back from the war trying to survive his own memories while finding himself leaning on the support of the Borderline Freaks MC. Amanda and Monk met each other and recognize some of what the other is feeling and has lived through but as their meetings increase so does the slow dance to love. Each have baggage to bear but once they realize the other helps to ease the burden in ways they never thought possible a beautiful love story blooms. Despite the fact their courtship takes time, effort and understanding these two characters show strength, commitment and bravery. What a great read to kick off the series.

Beautifully Written

Hooked from chapter one and could not place my reader down. I am be such a huge fan of MariaLisa DeMora and her writings. She brings her characters to life and I feel like I am there to bare witness to the events.
This new series is no exceptions. I fell in love with Alex and Amanda. They both suffered a great loss and found hope and love again with each other. This tale is so good. I can't find the best words to describe how it makes me feel.
However, I will say their story has all of the feels, so make sure to grab some tissues.

I highly recommend this new series and will always recommend this talented Author to my friends. I cannot wait to read book 2!

M/F Military Romance
Triggers: Death
I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.

Alex and Amanda have both lived very different lives. But, on a chilly day, they both meet under strange circumstances. I actually really loved how they met. I thought it was a unique way to have to main characters meet.

You kind of watch time pass, but it's mainly just through the pages, not necessarily through their interaction. However, it's a slow dance that they do and I really enjoyed watching it unfold.

This is a story about finding yourself, love and friendship again. It was short and sweet.
