So I read this one in Dutch, but I will be writing an English review!

I spotted this book in the book store and I was instantly in love with the cover. The blurb also sounded lovely, so I just decided to read it. And I am quite happy I did read it, however there were a few things that I, as a book lover, didn't particularly like.

For instance that these animals just put sticky sandwiches in someone else's books. Ate stuff while having sticky hands. Damaged books. If you do it to your own stuff, eh, if you want to treat your books badly that is on you, but don't just barge into someone's house and do that to their stuff. No. Just no.
And yes, they just break into the house. Patience? What is that?

And then there is the so-called big bear.... *snort* I won't say much more about that, but boy I was disappointed.

Still there were good points too (otherwise I wouldn't have rated it a 3.5 stars). For instance these animals really did love books, and they were really voracious readers. I also loved how each of them loved something different about books (well OK, almost everyone). Then there is the art, it was pretty cute, fluffy and sweet. Next the cover. <3
The bear's house, full of books? It was amazing, it is a dream house (then again, my home is also stuffed to the brim with books).
The ending was really sweet and cute. Definitely a perfect ending for a book like this!

All in all, a lot of good, but it is just a shame of the things that weren't too well done.

First sentence: Once there lived four friends who loved stories. Every night at bedtime, they read the same worn-out storybook. The cover was scuffed and the pages were sticky, but they didn't mind one bit. It had been theirs since they were all very little.

Premise/plot: This lovely picture book (originally published in the UK) stars a fox, a mouse, a hedgehog, and a bunny. All four friends LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to read. The problem? They only have ONE book between them. Where do new books come from, they wonder?! Do you dig them up like potatoes? Do they fall from the skies like stars? These four set out to have a book-finding adventure. Do they find a new book? Yes. But perhaps more importantly, they find a new friend too.

My thoughts: I really loved this one. I loved the five characters in it--particularly bear!!! It was fun to see so many characters get so excited about reading, about books with happy endings! This book has a VERY happy ending because Bear decides to open his house so that others can enjoy his books. But there are RULES too. Rules that I can get behind 100%.

Favorite quote:
"Who left sticky pawprints on this cover?" he grumbled. "And a sandwich in the middle!" he rumbled. "Who's been reading my books?!"

Chapeau! Deze mag niet bij ons thuis ontbreken.

No muta täähän toimi yllättävän hyvin ääneen dramatisoituna!
Reploissa riitti kuiskattavaa, hihkuttavaa, piipiteltävää, karjuttavaa ja tömisteltävää. Siinä sivussa kauhisteltiin joukolla hillovoileivillä tuhrittuja kirjoja ja niitä eläinlapsiparkoja joilla on vain yksi kirja. Erinomainen eskareille ja nuoremmille kirjastokierroksen päätteeksi :)

I always pick up books about books so this was no exception. The story is quite cute - a group of animal friends have one book which they read over and over and treasure. Once day, they find another book in the woods and read it before noticing that is has a bookplate in front saying it belongs to Bear. The animals grapple with the idea of keeping the book since they found it, but decide that they should return it to bear in the end. When they reach Bear's house they discover that he has a whole house full of books, so they decide to go in and enjoy...
When Bear gets back he is understandably upset that they have gone into his house without permission, particularly when he discovers that someone has used a jam tart as a bookmark (!), but he then decides to turn his home into a library so that everyone can enjoy the books.
I liked the bookish theme, cute illustrations and the obvious love for books. I wasn't such a fan of the books being mistreated or the animals breaking into bear's house!

This would be a great book to pair with Wanted: Ralfy Rabbit Book Burgler. Neither of these characters understands the idea of sharing books with others and the wonder of a library. While they are fun books to read in 4th grade, because everyone needs some fun, they would be especially great in the lower grades to talk about how to use the school library and the classroom library. You could start by talking about the lessons that Ralfy and Bear learn about sharing books and what a library is like and then translate that into lessons about what they will do. I actually might use Bear's House of Books to introduce my library and explain that Bear was so generous to share his library, the animals were very grateful and took good care of the books. Then relate it to the amount of books I have in our classroom and how I want to share them but I need them respected as well. Hmmm.... it's a thought.

Toiminut pienten satuhetkiin!

Discovered at my library is another book about the love of books, the need for more, and sharing what one has. Fox, Bunny, Mouse and Hedgehog love to read, but they only have one book! In a search for others, they find one and see that it belongs to bear. They walk to return it, but Bear isn't home, so they return it through a window. Unfortunately, Mouse falls in with the book, and then lets the others inside, to a wondrous home. It's filled with books! They begin to read and are so absorbed, they forget that they really don't belong, and Bear arrives home. What happens then is a sweet scene, and both Bear and the other animals get their wishes. Full page and boldly colored illustrations will delight young readers.

The illustrations are adorable but there are a few reasons why I may not read it during storytime.
* I liked it for personal book loving reasons but this might be too long and not action packed enough for wriggly preschoolers.
* The little animals basically break into someone's house and the trespassing isn't addressed. I'd definitely have to take the time to talk about that with the kids. "Now, should mouse have let her friends into bear's house just because he had awesome books?"
* The little animals may love books but they don't treat them very well. Though this could also be a thing to discuss during a storytime. "Should we wash sticky stuff off our hands before we touch books? Especially books that belong to other people?" and that kind of thing.

Four little friends love their book, but they wonder if there are more books out there. They go looking in the woods and actually find one. But it says it belongs to Bear, so they decide to return it. When they do, they discover that Bear's house is full of books. But will the grumpy Bear be willing to share his stories?

An adorable little story about the love of books and the joy of sharing them. The illustrations are quite cute. This reminds me a little bit of Bunny's Book Club but it is different enough to distinguish itself. If you like one of these stories you will probably like the other. Hand this to book lovers, cute animal lovers, and those wanting to celebrate the joys of libraries full of books.

I liked this book, for me I would rate it about a 3.

My 2 and 4 year old love this book. For them I rate it a 5.

When my kids pick the read aloud I often end up reading books based on TV characters or show. This is a read aloud that my kids pick every time and I enjoy reading so much more than a regurgitated tv episode of whatever popular character they found on the shelf.

Cute story. The animals read a book and then they hunt for a new book. They find one but it belongs to the bear. They take it back to him and he has a LOT of books. He lets them stay and read. They tell him they only have the one book. He decides to open a library and share his wealth. Reading is fun alone, but is also fun to share.

"This isn't our house! These aren't our books!" - This book had me laughing so hard I would have to take pauses. Incredibly amusing - the love of books and lack of library in the woods drives a group of small animal friends to home invasion style trespassing. I borrowed this book from the library to read, but it is so cute I think I am going to have to get my own copy!

This is a very sweet and cute book about the love of stories. The illustrations are fluffy and adorable. Plus, this story can be used to teach the basics of caring for books, particularly borrowed books. For example, don't read books with sticky hands while eating a jelly sandwich!

This is a sweet story of some book-loving friends who find a lost book in the forest and they're determined to find the rightful owner, Bear, and return it. What they find is a new friend who loves books as much as they do and so much more!
