Their tenuous attraction is at times exactly what they need and at other times a detriment to their clients. That is until a frightened wife hires them to protect her and her infant… from her husband.

These women have more baggage than a Kardashian going on a weekend getaway!

But guess what, that's what makes this book so damn good. These characters are both flawed with a capital F for f*cked up.

We're first introduced to trainwreck Stella Moore who is recovering from a gunshot wound to her shoulder because she took a bullet for her then partner Joseph while undercover. She is convinced that even though she is attracted to women and has even slept with a few, she will never consider a relationship with one because of various nonsensical reasons like the fact that she has never fallen for a woman before. Stella also happens to still be hung up on her ex boyfriend and ex partner Joseph who dumped her over a year ago.

This woman made me want to throw my e-reader out the window several times. Because even when she and Jade first hook up she just won't shut the hell up about men and sleeping with them and how she will never consider a woman for a "real" relationship. (for this reason this book might be a turn off for some readers)

Speaking of Jade however, this former air force mechanic is as straight as a pretzel. After joining Pioneer Personal Security Services and meeting her new partner Stella, she almost immediatly falls prey to the gorgeous but self destructive former FBI agent. Even though she knows she alsmost certainly will get her heart broken she can't help but be drawn to the siren that is her partner.

These women have a type of chemistry that's like a four alarm fire in an oil refinery. (kudos if you get that reference) It leads to some of the hottest and most intense sex scenes I've ever read and that's saying something! I really loved their character development especially Stella's who became my favorite in the end.

The pacing in my opinion was great, I never felt the story in anyway was dragging. There was enough time spent on the introduction of the characters and the building of their relationship including the ups and the downs. Add the fact that the mystery element is always lurking in the background and you've got one hell of a page turner.

Minor thing that bugged me was that aside from grammar and spelling mistakes, the mystery element was pretty predictable but that's all that I can think of. This book was phenomenal and I will definitely be reading it multiple times again. Full 5* rating and added it to my all times favorites list.

Crash & Burn by Cynthia Dane and Hildred Billings almost did that… crash and burn I mean. I did finish, but had some real problems keeping myself invested in reading this story. I could not get a connection with the characters. Their romance felt too harsh, too abrasive for some reason. Stella, supposedly a bi-sexual, is so in-your-face-slutty-for-guys that it was confusing the hell out of me (she must have been but a one of the Kinsey scale). But somehow she hooks up with (and keeps coming back to) Jade.

The other thing that the writers really wanted to push home was that this story takes place in Portland, Oregon. I sometimes wondered if they were sponsored by the Beaver State.
It’s not badly written. It’s not even a super bad plot. I have enjoyed Dane/Billings books in the past and will in future, but Crash & Burn unfortunately is not going to be on my re-read list.

f/f explicit

Themes: I had no love for the characters, makes it hard to finish the story, a lot of testosterone in this book

Overall I give this 3.5stars...mainly because the two authors poke fun at themselves in part of the book but without that a solid 3stars. Reason is that regardless of it being a full length story, it was a bit too wordy when it didn't need to be, almost to the point being repetitive especially in the beginning when trying to establish the straight shooter and the slut. The pacing was a little slow at times and when you thought it would pick up, it kind of died back down. The last 25% of the book when the romance was put aside and the criminal aspect was being put together, the story got good. Regardless, I enjoyed the read and look forward to more from this duo in the future. Plus, kindleUnlimited baby!!!

Yet another book I liked more than I thought I would when I began reading (or, rather, listening in this case).

Jade grew up in Medford, Oregon, then joined the Air Force and is now starting a new job in Portland as a bodyguard. She knows who she is (100% lesbian) and is pretty earnest about her job and her life. Her new partner, Stella, is much more complicated. She’s messed up on many levels, but pretends she’s fine and happy with her life, and that all she cares about is getting laid as often as possible. She identifies as bisexual but doesn’t believe she could ever fall in love with a woman. She has a bad habit of sleeping with her job partners, and is still hung up on her ex-boyfriend, Agent Joseph Montoya. It doesn’t help that he’s hot, nice, loyal and that she literally took a bullet for him when they were working together. She used to do undercover work and is very good at hiding her feelings, including from herself.

At first, I was worried I’d get bored with Stella’s attitude and all her pining for her ex-boyfriend, how she likes to fuck guys and all that. It didn’t last long, though.

While Jade is straightforward and easy to like, Stella is the most interesting character, and the one who grows the most over the course of the story (a story that doesn’t stop at romance as both women get sucked into a murder investigation and a kidnapping ring). She’s a lot less shallow than she seems at first. She’s dealing with a lot at the beginning of the story – a career change she might not have really wanted, a break-up she’s not over, endless pain in her shoulder, loneliness she pretends not to feel. She reminds me both of Michelle Rodriguez before she was comfortable with her sexual orientation and of Cobie Smulders’s character in Stumptown, which coincidentally happens to also take place in Portland, Oregon. That attitude I was worried about hides a very complex, flawed and multi-dimensional character. As much as I liked Jade at the beginning, Stella was my favorite by the end.

Before pointing my dislikes, I'd like to say that, after all, I really liked the book.

The thing is I don't get Stella, she feels a little too pushy, I don't know. It's really hard for me to believe that someone who loves men so much could end up with a woman. Not saying that because she's bisexual, but she spent a lot of time talking how much she loved d***s, so it's hard to believe.
The first time they hook up felt soooo wrong and fake, really like Stella was trying just to fill that void.

Also, I think that Jade kind of deserves better than Stella, but they are a cute couple. It's really sweet how they try to protect each other, and throughout the book I got to like them together and cheer for them.

Even with d*** talk (too much for my gay ass), it's really hot, very week written even when the MC is doing something wrong, it's still super sexy.

The plot is really interesting, although I figured the whole thing since the beginning, so not much surprise.

F/f explicit.

Jade, an androgynous out lesbian moves to Portland from her hometown in southern Oregon after a stint in the Air Force. Taking a job with a personal security firm she is paired with Stella, a beautiful, impulsive take no prisoners bisexual woman who could never see herself in an actual relationship with another woman. The story that unfolds is about their budding and unpredictable relationship as well as about a murder and a kid napping case that spiral out of control.

This is the fourth F/F pairing novel I've read by these wonderful co-authors and just like Hard to Get and On the Rocks it is much longer than your average romance, filled with edgy and well written sex scenes and set within a universe that brings forth characters from some of the other books. These authors never disappoint.

I dropped one star from the rating because I felt that the book dragged a bit somewhere between the beginning and the halfway mark when the suspense plot was set in motion. Basically this could have been a shorter, tighter book. But please read it!! Stella Moore is one of the most well-constructed characters I have ever come across in all the fiction I've read. You'll want to yell at her and hug her at the same time.

I'm not at all reading my Hildred Billings novels in publication order. The last one I read (Into the Fire) came out in 2019, and before that I was working my way through the Ren'Ai Rensai series, which came out in 2013. Now I'm back to a book from 2017, the same year On the Rocks was published--and the same year I discovered Hildred Billings in the first place. It's interesting bc I think the tone is more similar to the books I read of hers back then. Her tone must shift as she develops as a writer.

Crash and Burn, like On the Rocks, is a lot about a character who is bisexual but prefers men and can't see herself seriously being with women. Now Stella is a little more ridiculous than Adrienne. She's been sleeping with women since the age of sixteen, and clearly has been emotionally involved with some of them. But she's just had very meaningful relationships with men, so she figures that's how it's gotta be. With Jade she forges a connection that's different than anything she's had with a woman before.

Stella is a sympathetic character if very flawed. She can be insensitive, a little manipulative, and kind of a petty bitch. But she thinks of herself as a slut due to past experiences, both in her dating life and in undercover work, and partly due to that sometimes undervalues herself. She's willing to sacrifice herself for a lover in the blink of an eye, and while she's very confident in her attractiveness, she sees herself as someone that no one could really seriously commit to. This, more than reluctance to be with a woman seriously, is the major reason her relationship with Jade gets ~heated~ very fast, but takes a while to become something steady and grounding.

Jade, on the other hand, is a bit less interesting to me. Apart from falling for Stella, and her involvement with a new job and the intrigues of the plot, she doesn't have much going on. But she's competent, and manages to control her jealousy pretty well for someone dating a woman who's talking about her exes every five seconds. Sure, sometimes she snaps, but mostly she's patient and willing to take the relationship at whatever pace Stella wants to set.

Overall, I liked this book. It's funny--it has a lot of cameos from characters in other Billings and Dane novels, some of which I've read and some of which I haven't. So if you've read other Billings and Dane novels, particularly those written around 2017, you may catch some of those ;)

My head feels crushed after this book too.And it feels so wrong even trying to rate this book higher, like almost ilegal.

Don't get me wrong I enjoyed, a lot (sometimes),but the dialogue was cringe and corny most times and especially at the worst moments. The representation at lesbian and bisexuality was both not done well. The plot was captiving, giving me chills about what was next supposed to happen, but the holes in the characters personality and not only that but the characters development too was hurtful, truly hurtful.

Interesting but not something I would usually recommend .

3.75 to air my grievances

This had an interesting plot and crazy characters.

I wanted to quit at 5% because Stella is a piece of work. Abrasive would be too easy, and too simple, a way to describe her. There's a lot of people who state their intolerance is because others are "rubbing their sexuality/lifestyle in my face" and I always think they're over exaggerating because often people are just living their lives yet others get so offended by that. Stella is very much rubbing her sexuality in Jade's face. Hell, she rubs it in the reader's face too. Much like Jade, I did not ask for the gory details of Stella's sex life, and phallic preferences, before she was already there making sure I knew what it was. Her sexuality is not the problem, mind you.

There is nothing wrong with anyone, character or real, enjoying a vast amount of consensual sex. With that being said, Stella is a ho. Funny thing is, I didn't think she was until she used Jade for a petty scheme, without Jade knowing her intentions.

It didn't help that there is truly not one likable character in the whole novel. Men acting too big for their britches and being dogs. Women too ready to play into their own stereotypes.

A good portion of this book, and their relationship, was toxic. Jade is constantly, during sex, comparing her prowess and worth to Stella's love of penis. She doesn't think she's enough, and she is always acting like she has something to prove out of, and inside, the bedroom. If someone is constantly worried they aren't enough, and the person they're with has graciously stated that disclaimer multiple times, why would any sane person do this? Answer: Neither one is sane. It is acknowledged that they are two "fucked up" and insecure individuals. Penis envy though? Ugh. The last thing anyone needs to do is give Freud a bigger head, even in the afterlife.

I just can't get behind anyone making a woman feel unworthy because she doesn't have a dick. Excuse my language. Preferences matter, but if this baffling/stupid attraction is leading down a road of fucking up someone's self-worth... nope.

Everyone, including Stella and Jade, believing Stella is a slut and acting accordingly is a theme throughout. Even Stella isn't looking out for Stella. Jade constantly trying to fuck the insecurities out of her body is also a theme. Again, excuse my language.

I'm going to stop ranting now, or it may never end.

I liked the plot for Lisa. The "case" and how everything around them tied in was a nice touch. All in all it wasn't all bad, just frustrating. If you intend to read this, just remember: Sex. Sex. Sex.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Loved this book! Thrills, murder, mystery, intrigue, suspense, and passion continue to keep you glued to the pages of this fascinating romantic suspense by Cynthia Dane and Hildred Billings. This was a great suspense story that is full of emotional angst, scorching love scenes, and a compelling storyline. I loved how the romantic relationship builds between the two protagonists. A poignant story about two women partners who are assigned a high profile case, but they need to overcome their indifferent attraction to solve the case. Jade Emerson now works for a private security services as a bodyguard, and when her boss informed her that she will be working with a new female partner on special assignment, she is paired with Stella Moore, former FBI agent. What happens when Jade wants to pursue a relationship Stella? One problem—Stella’s ex-fiancé/partner, Joseph who she still cares about, but the chemistry between Jade and Stella is undeniable and it becomes sultry. There are several twists and turns within the story that makes it interesting. The scenes are well written, fast-paced and flow smoothly from one scene to the next. This story will pique your interest and draw you in from the beginning to the very end.

If you are looking for steamy romance, characters that dislike each other and then fall for each other and a happy ending this book does deliver. I was looking for all that, but I didn't enjoy this novel as much as I thought I would. I was honestly annoyed with one of the characters most of the story, though I will say she had a character development that made my sympathize a bit more at the end. Said steamy scenes also came off as a little cheesy at some moments and didn't seem realistic. Could have just been not my cup of tea, other people may enjoy!

An interesting start for the two characters Jade and Stella. It wasn’t hard to see they were destined for each other, but the trip there would be difficult. Stella is into sex with anyone she just doesn’t care. Jade is only into sex and having a relationship with one woman. Can Jade make Stella see that intimacy and a relationship with a woman can fulfill her if she’ll allow it. Will Stella open up to the idea that all the casual sex she’s having isn’t all it’s cracked up to be and Jade is the best thing for her ?!!

Good ending and good story.

Okay read

I really enjoyed Stella (ex-FBI/ex-cop) and Jade(ex-military) both working together as private security The complexity of the couple and their friends/coworkers was nice and I'm looking forward to reading up on their relationship. They had a great storyline.

What bothered me was the lack of proofreading. There were a lot of grammatical errors and extra words thrown in that should have been deleted while editing. That sort of thing trips me up...it made this book a slow read for me.

Mystery & romance

Awesome story telling once again! Loved how Stella and Jade get together with some mystery thrown in. The title absolutely fits the book.
Stella is an interesting character that can’t decide what she wants either male or female lover. It’s interesting to me how she decides what she wants and who with.
Jade knows what she wants, but is a little surprised how fast she falls for Stella.
Crash and Burn is a good read that you don’t want to put down since you want to know who, why and how sooner than we read to find out the answers. Enjoyable read.

Good Story

We have a murder mystery of sorts as well as a lesbian and bisexual woman in love. I enjoyed the read except for the poor grammar. I understand that self published authors often cannot afford to hire editors, but I think that people who write for a living should know the basics of their craft.
