Mercy Hills Pack #7

Omega's Heart

Rate this book
Too big for beauty...

All Felix wanted was what the rest of the White River omegas had--a mate, a home, pups. But when you tower over all your potential suitors, romance is hard to come by. Watching omegas ten years his junior get their happy ever after hurts more with each mating ceremony, so he begs his parents to let him move to Mercy Hills--not to find a mate, but simply to find a future where he isn't a dead weight dragging on those around him. Instead, he finds a cranky, broken, sarcastic alpha who is desperately in need of someone to sit him down and tell him how things are. And who looks at Felix like the sun shines out of his eyes.

"Your pack are a bunch of fools..."

Kaden came home from the Army heavier by the weight of a useless medal, lighter by several body parts, and with no real idea how to go forward. As he struggles to find his place in the pack, he takes solace in the company of the large omega sent to help him adjust. When Kaden discovers that Felix's size means he's never even been kissed, nothing will do for Kaden except to get the jump on all those other idiots who passed Felix up, mate this handsome creature, and give Felix everything his heart has ever desired.

"Come work for me and we'll change your world..."

Finding a mate is the easy part. As the Alpha's brother and decorated war hero, Kaden finds himself at the center of two political campaigns and must learn how to walk with a paw in both the shifter world, and the human one. And while he travels, courting the packs in a political campaign the likes of which the country has never seen before, he and Felix become an almost unstoppable pair, determined to forge new alliances between human and shifter, and lay the groundwork for their eventual freedom.

Omega's Heart is 256,000 words of slow burn passion between two exceptional shifters, warm family moments, surprising new friends, even more surprising new opportunities, political intrigue, and a turning point in the path that all the packs will eventually follow.

As much as it pains me I may just need to stop reading. I like the book - but I feel like it is never ever going to end. Like I'll be reading this when I retire. I have rarely ever had a book drag this long. OMG the minutiae -- so many details, so much just abandoned, so much extra. This book needs an editor BADLY and STAT. It should be half this length AT MOST and a good editor would have caught the continuity errors (which are bad enough as to make the reader confused as hell in some places) and gotten rid of the fluff. This is like a Chow type of dog - fluff everywhere.

Have you ever gone to a party and gotten stuck with a person who talks NON STOP and endlessly and, even though some of the talk is fun, much of it is poke your eyes out "why me?" yeah. That's this book.

Not saying I don't like the stories in here (all like 300 of them) because individually they are fine. I want to know what happens. I am invested in this world. I CARE. I will say Felix and Kaden need some level of conflict and I'm at 65% and still no real conflict. The politics, the other packs, etc. It makes the book feel scattered. Nothing seems to happen for long stretches of time other than daily stuff.

I love this universe and (other than #6 which was not great) have enjoyed the books but length does not greatness make. Outside of the editing issues (plentiful even to me and I usually brush them off unless they are egregious) it's too much stuff in one book. I cannot even say its exposition - it is painful, painful show and tell of EVERY thing happening. There is no conflict with the two MC's which makes their story pretty bland (good, just lackluster even though I feel good about them loving each other).

I don't think I can do it. It's endless -- I swear it took me an HOUR to go 4%!

P.S. AND the mating night sex was kind of blah and faded to black. If I'm reading 600 pages you better give me some HOT sex!

Too long for little reason.

Too long for me to enjoy it. At 600 pages, it didn’t give me anything that could have been summed up in 300.

Everything is basically perfect between this couple and I got tired of hearing how perfect they were for each other.

Best enjoyed as part of a series so you can get a handle on the endless characters in this saga.

It was a really pleasant read, for the most part. The only things that irked me were:
1. It got a little boring and repetitive near the middle, but luckily it soon picked up pace and interest after that rough patch.
2. A few phrases and words were repeated too much for my liking- the word “paw”, for instance, and that saying “I know which side of the tree a good den is” or something along that.

But I like the direction the world-building has taken, and the future seems really bright now. I hope the author keeps on coming up with cute couples to keep the Mercy Hills universe going strong and far ahead. Anticipating the next one.

Felix White River is an omega who's turning 28 soon & still not mated. He has the body of an alpha & it's undesirable in White River. He wants the opportunity to mate, so he requests a transfer to Mercy Hills.
Kaden Salma Wood is an injured Army vet who's decided to rehabilitate in Mercy Hills with his brothers, instead of Salma Wood. He has some issues with his time in the Army & his injury but he's doing pretty good considering.

I loved Kaden & Felix as a couple. I felt like their romance was genuine & they truly loved each other. They definitely didn't settle for each other. They chose each other. I liked the parts where we got to catch up on the other couples. I liked that the brother's (Quin, Abel, Kaden & Cas) mother is coming around. She really redeems a lot of her previous BS with her talk to Mitchel.

This book is half about Kaden and Felix and half about catching up on Mercy Hills, the story of Julius and Minnie, issues with trying to get the Segregation Laws abolished, traveling to the other enclaves to decide who gets the next trust, etc.. The book could've easily been cut down a third just by cutting out some of the mundane day to day stuff that's repetitively written & condensing some of the visits to the other enclaves. It really dragged the story down IMO. The story doesn't progress much for being 600 pages long. Mitchel Alpha Buffalo Gap's change from being a domineering prejudiced alpha to a horrible waste of space was a big difference from all previous books he was in. Just added drama to finally give Mitchel his comeuppance for Usher? Well it wasn't enough. Usher deserved better than what was done to Mitchel.

There's a lot of spelling, punctuation & grammar mistakes throughout the book. It had enough run-on sentences to fill a sink. It needed a second pass of the editor or a second editor to catch them.

Story continuity issues: (%'s are on the Kindle version)
* Felix being referred to as being from Winter Moon, instead of White River, in 2 spots (5% & 18%) that I caught.
* At 22% the meeting with the president. It's written that the president is meeting Abel and Bax for the first time but in The Omega's Alpha (Quin & Holland's book) there's a scene where Bax is talking to the president.
* At 35% Kaden stood watching Felix & Julius but on the very next page he's in his wheelchair still watching.
* Fan's age? At 25% he's 10, at 51% he's referred to as a teenager, and at 80% he's referred to as nearly a teenager.
* Holland & Cale's parents? In The Omega's Alpha Chapter 15 Holland refers to Mitchel as his uncle. In The Omega's Alpha Chapter 10 it's mentioned as Holland's mother had gone to the Moonland's before his first mating. Then in this book Chapter 99 Mitchel says "We raised him right" referring to Holland & at 82% it's stated that Mitchel & his current mate are Holland's parents. In a previous book it was stated that Holland & Cale are full blooded brothers. Changing their parents in this book seems like it was just for drama.
* The chapters dealing with Damian & Salem don't follow along with their book Lone Wolf's Omega. Some things are out of order or not mentioned as happening as it was in Lone Wolf's Omega, which could've easily been avoided just by having their book handy.

Things thrown in for filler or wasted reading?
* The stump socks Felix made for Kaden, the Dr wanted to known about. Why mention this at the Dr appt but not to Felix later or maybe make it a way Felix could make money for himself?
* The mention of the museum curator wanting Felix's input but it was never followed up on.
* The roommates that Kaden & Felix had in DC. Barely mentioned but never met. Not needed, just wasted reading.
* Lots of talk about Kaden getting people to come work at the hospital but there was only one short talk at the play & then nothing. This is a major issue for Mercy Hills but it wasn't followed up on.
* On the trip to Los Padres Felix really wanted an orange tree. It was mentioned as something they could possibly look into. Never mentioned again. I know orange trees probably wouldn't flourish in Tennessee but maybe Jason's green thumb could've made some grow.
* Mentioning that Hunter wouldn't be welcomed in the enclave. That especially the elders would have a big problem with him. Then other than people looking at them odd nothing was said about it being disrespectful to the shifters to have a dog in the enclave.

Not sure how everyone could ignore so many mistakes & give this book a 4 or 5 star? There's just too much wrong to ignore IMO.

The only book I’ve read in the series but I really loved this couple. The book was a tad too long and not entirely focused on the main pair and since I haven’t read anything else in the series I didn’t really care about the politics and all the other pack issues. Still I very much enjoyed this ugly duckling-like trope book.

Hmmm....I had a bit of a hard time rating this one. Let me explain. The writing was beautiful, I loved LOVED being in the Mercy Hills universe again, especially since the authors took the time to make sure there were no errors like book 6 where they forgot they had Raleigh move out once, then repeating the same scene of Raleigh moving out again later in the book. Lol...

So, I love the tiny details of the small mundane lives of the shifters of Mercy Hills. And for that I’d give it 10 stars if possible. But! You had to know the ‘but’ was coming... but, it wasn’t really focussed on the Kaden and Felix. They were in the scenes but it was more of the overarching storyline that’s covering the entire series that’s the focus. Even then, I truly don’t feel like the story moved forward much. It fleshed things out a bit, yes. But we’re no closer to the True Omega mystery or anything.

Which reminds me, I actually expected there to be more of a suspense plot line for Kaden’s story since in Book 6, Kaden made it sound like he uncovered some secret military plot or at least has some suspicions or something when he made Abel promise to get his hands on Kaden’s stuff before their mother. What happened to that?? 🤔

All in all, I would say, if you were already a fan of the Mercy Hills series, you will LOVE ❤️❤️❤️ this book. But if this is your first foray into Mercy Hills, you’re going to wonder what’s wrong with everyone because it doesn’t follow the typical Act 1 - introducing the cast, Act 2 - add conflict and Act 3 - resolve conflict, kiss and make up recipe.

I loved this. It’s so much better than Book 6, which was a shame. There were still some errors, but mostly missing words or misspellings and easily overlooked. At least the storyline was solid, if not the typical narrative recipe. I’m just wondering (and hoping) that there will be more to the series because there’s so much more to do!

I had a bit of a hard time reading this one. I loved reading about Kaden & Felix as a couple and I love the Mercy Hills universe, but the book was just too long. Especially as nothing happened ... no suspense plot, no drama, just nothing ... It was nice to read about the day-to-day live of the other shifters of Mercy Hills, but this could have been shortened to at least 2/3 of the book.

Wow, I'm lost for words. What a great, beautiful and fantastic continuation this book is. Safe to say I greatly enjoyed reading this, all 870 pages. I didn't want it to end!!
Go and read the other reviews, most of the give a much deeper exploration of al the intricasies of this story. I'll try to give you my own thoughts and opinions. It may contain spoilers, so I'm putting it in spoiler tags, read at your own risk!

All in all a wonderful read, I couldn't put it away, it just flows on. And now the long wait for the next book starts. It's totally worth the time, because the stories are of excellent quality, but still.......can't wait for the next one. Of course there's always rereading in the meantime. I can't recommend this series enough!!!!

Even though this book was long (117 chapters), it was a very pleasant read. I enjoyed the love that Kaden and Felix had for each other.

The ups and downs that their relationship endured was well written. I also appreciated the interactions of the previous characters from Books one through six. Mercy Hills is a great series and I hope it's not finished yet!

Oh, and now we've reached the last of the currently published books (as of October 2022), and while I loved this one as much as the others I'm feeling bittersweet over coming to the unfinished end with no continuation in sight. Because yes, I went to look on everything Ann-Katrin Byrde to see if there was an expected publication date or a progress update for Cale's book, which is everywhere as "coming soon" and the last estimated date called for 2021. If anyone knows something, please let me know. I haven't been as absorbed in a series in a while!
As for this book, I adore Felix. It's always interesting to see a character with small yet valuable ambitions get what they want and step up to what that entails. In Felix's case, he wanted a mate and a home, and stepping up to be the politician's mate Kaden needed. And I always love a disabled character who learns to live a good life with his disability, not "in spite of" it. Ann-Katrin had the chance to go the inspiration p*rn route and went "not today, Satan"; and as a disabled person I appreciate that.

Omega's Heart is one of my favorite books. This series is amazing and has stellar world building. It's especially perfect if you like abo stories or shifter stories.

Basically, we're in a world where shifters are real. The government decides to put them in enclaves, and Alphas are in charge of their own enclave. There are, and I'm going from memory here so I may miss one: Los Padres, Winter Moon, White River, Persiguir, Montana Border, Jackson-Jellystone, Nevada Ashes, Honisloonz, Salma Wood, Jordan Bay, Green Moon, and of course, MERCY HILLS. There are also "true omegas" and lots of lore around the true omegas being lucky or having "powers." It's WILD.

ANYWAY. Omega's Heart is Felix and Kaden's story. Felix is originally from White River but moves to Mercy Hills to start a new life. He's "too big for beauty," and the alphas all overlook him. He's 28 and feels unmateable. He moves to Mercy Hills, and eventually, his job becomes looking after the alpha brother of THE Alpha. Kaden was injured in the Army, and now he's home to heal.

Kaden feels like a broken alpha. As he gets to know Felix more and more, he realizes that the alphas in White River were fools and decides to court/mate Felix.

All the while, Kaden starts working for their local senator. Apparently, the senator plans to run for president, and if the shifters vote, the senator will "strike down" the segregation laws. The shifters will get more freedom and won't be forced to live under the harsh rules of the laws in/of the enclaves.

There's also the underlying plot throughout the entire series of each omega finding their HEA. Most are "true omegas," and they're discovering their powers. They're also dealing with prejudice against omegas from basically everyone, and they're in charge of the distribution of the Mutch Trusts. Which I'm not even gonna try to explain.

But basically, a whole hell of a lot is going on. I love this story for Felix, mostly. But I also love the look into the other enclaves.

This series is criminally overlooked. I love them.

Soooo... I'm torn about how to rate this, which is why it ended up smack dab in the middle. It felt both too long and yet like it glossed over A LOT. For example, there was all this buildup to the mating night because Felix wanted to wait and make it special, but then when it happens, it's pretty much fade-to-black. It'd be one thing if the sex scenes were ALL fade-to-black, but they're not. Several happen later that felt entirely unnecessary, so why skip one the characters had been waiting literal months for and the readers are anticipating after all the teasing? It didn't make sense. Also, there'd be lead up to other important events - THIS MAJOR THING IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN - and then there'd be a scene jump and we'd get a summary of what occurred instead of actually seeing it in real time, so to speak. Yet, there were plenty of extremely slow domestic scenes or scenes having to do with Kaden's political job that could have easily been trimmed. (And I hate politics in general, so I totally skimmed some of those sections, even though I recognize the importance of his work in the Mercy Hills universe.)

Anyway, as a whole I love this series and I'll definitely read the next one, but mixed feelings here. I feel like all of the extra stuff and the sheer minutiae of day-to-day life scenes detracted from Felix and Kaden's romance. I liked them as a couple, but not as much as some of the earlier couples. Overall, not a bad read, but I feel it could've easily been 30K shorter. ALSO, there were a lot of minor editing errors and inconsistencies. Enough to be noticeable, especially in a book this long. Name switches, missing punctuation, typos, the works. It really needed better editing.

Another great addition

Brother Four falls to fate. Kaden returns the Mercy Hills, minus half a leg and half a hand due to injuries received in the Middle East. He meets his helper, an exceptionally tall and stocky omega named Felix. Felix petitioned to be at Mercy Hills because he'd been overlooked and teased by his home pack, but Kaden sees him for himself. When Kaden is asked to help a local senator, we get to follow along with the new coup!e and the rest of the Mercy Hill shifters in their continuing bid for independence.

You know you've enjoyed a book when you get to page 587 and you wish it was twice as long.

#7 of the Mercy Hills Pack series.
MC Kaden, brother of three of Mercy Hills’ Alphas is serving in the US army when a grenade explodes nearby while on a mission and takes away part of a leg; three fingers and the hearing in one ear. He fails to save the life of a fellow shifter which adds to his trauma. Shifters in the US are segregated in enclaves with strict laws about where and how they they live and interact with humans. He takes a job with the local senator who has plans to run for president, in the hope that will mean the striking down of the Segregation Laws if he is elected with the help of shifters nationwide.
Running parallel to that is his developing relationship with an Omega who has moved to Mercy Hills. MC Felix is looking for a different life as he is sure that his chance of being mated is nil, given he is taller than most Alphas in his home pack, he is better educated than most Omegas and will have more opportunities to do productive work. The mystery of ‘True Omegas’ is gradually being uncovered but there are still many gaps in their knowledge about the old ways.
Sadly, it’s looking less and less likely that the duo writing as Ann-Katrin Byrde will finish the two books remaining in the series. So we may never have the answers to all the questions thrown up here.

I love this series. You would think with such a long book you would get bore but with this series I'm always disppointed that I've reached the end and was to read it again. This book brought a surprise of entering Kaden into the political ring something I wouldn't have thought of. I love how this explores more of the injustice of the world and shifters and the fight to give them more equality. It makes this series stand out for more than just a normal mpreg story with shifters falling in love and popping out kids.

Couple wise I love Felix and Kaden's relationship. Instead of fireworks and undying love it is more quiet and stable. They have a comfortable feel around them. I love Felix being like the gentle giant of an omega. Probably the most intriguing thing in the book was Hunter. Not many shifter books have regular domesticated dogs as characters. It was interesting to see how his doggy character was handled and interrogated into the Mercy Hills Pack.

I love every book of this series and at book 7 this series is far from stale or boring. I have to wonder where it will go from here. All the brothers are mated up but there are still a lot of loose ends for the series. I'm really anxious to see what is in store for this world.

Omega's Heart is the seventh book in the Mercy Hills Pack series by Ann-Katrin Byrde... and has just become my favorite book in the series. I absolutely loved Kaden and Felix both together and separately as characters. Kaden is a strong, smart and protective Alpha who sees what a catch Felix is and isnt afraid to mate the atypical omega. Felix is ot the average omega - he is bigger, stronger and as people are about to realize, he is perfect mate for the Alpha's brother. And together these two are hot.
The story itself is extremely interesting and I love the series. This book gave me emotions, humor, drama... everything I could ask for in a shifter mpreg book in this series. I can not wait what happens next.

I received an advanced reader's copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.

So. I have some thoughts. It wasn’t my favorite of the series. I thought there was a lot that shouldn’t have been in it then stuff I wanted more of was glossed over. Like the alphas brothers mom I wanted more of. I wanted more of the omegas from Buffalo gap at the end. I would have loved seeing the omegas stand up face to face to Mitchell. All the traveling was glossed over and it would have been cool to see how the different packs lived (HELLO COMPANION SERIES???)
But then there was sooooo much of just day to day stuff that didn’t have to be there. I would have loved to be an editor on this book to point them in the right direction. It was so close!!

I give this book a 3.5 stars. I would have given it 4 if it has had a good editor. Also, it dragged a bit in the middle and was a bit repetitive. That being said I really like Felix and Kaden and the supporting characters. I've enjoyed the entire series and was eager to read this one. I liked that Kaden was an amputee and disenchanted after the war and Felix was a non traditional omega, because of his large size, and their very differences from the others in their packs made them ideal mates.

I really did like Kaden and Felix’s characters, very different from anyone else in the series. Kudos for that. I loved how they worked together, complemented each other, and built strength together. But this book was way too long, too much minutia in daily life, and for me all the political stuff is way too boring.

So... this book is Long. L-O-N-G long. Capital L long. I've been reading it on and off for a few weeks now and for a long time there seemed to be no end.

So why the fie star rating? Because the world building is freaking brilliant. Because I LOVED all the characters (most of them have their own story in this series, but I wouldn't know, this is the only book I've actually read out of them), their depth, their many facets. I especially loved both, Felix and Kaden. And I enjoyed the complex layers of pack and human politics. The funny and not-so-funny moments. This is not a romance story - this is a whole complex world in book form in which romance happens for Felix and Kaden.

I have to say, partly the five stars are also kudos for making me enjoy a relatively typical alpha-omega pairing (stereotypical in some ways, not so much in others). I always have a huge problem with alpha-omega stories because they largely feel like traditional heterosexual (and heteronormative) romance stories with gender stereotypes switched on to the max - my most hated feature of most het romance - just with the woman having a dick. I absolutely resent the inherent inequality supposedly designed by nature. It's just a sensitive issue for me. And while this inequality is, in part, also true here, I found it a lot more palatable. Even if it still makes me squirm.

So, at the end, I had this very weird feeling I often get when having read a long, but good book - as much as I was looking forward to the end, when it was actually there, I was sad to let go. I wanted to read more about Felix and Kaden. Damn.

Politics, trusts, matings and babies, oh my.

I love the Mercy Hills Pack series. This saga just gets better with each book. You will want to read the first six books in order. The bundles make it easier. This is a long book, but I was never bored. Lots of questions are answered, more still need answers. Differences in pack attitudes are revealed, and human politics are in play. It is a non- stop ride that will leave you breathless.
While all our old friends are here, welcoming us back into their lives, this book concentrates on Kaden and Felix. Home from the Army after losing part of a left leg, hand, and hearing , Kaden just wants to heal in peace. That is if his brothers, Quin, Abel and Cas let him. He doesn't expect to fall for the tall, gorgeous omega who is helping him. Felix left his birth pack for Mercy Hills after it became clear he had no future there. At 6'2 he looks more alpha than omega. But he is drawn to Kaden. He doesn't see a cripple, he sees the heart and strength under the tough exterior.
Kaden and Felix are well matched. Working for a senator with plans for the White House will take them to visit all the packs to gauge support, and readiness for the next round of Trusts.
Their road to HEA is filled with bumps, family angst, the power of the omega pack, a pregnancy, and politics. Ooh, did I mention they adopt a three legged former bomb dog? You will love this book!
This book contains adult themes and language, mm sex and is intended for mature readers only.

Despite my unfortunate experiences with the series I was really interested in this one, the plot sounds very nice, I really like the "different omegas" stories.

Felix is definitely different, lovable, adorable, sweet and determined. His counterpart Kaden is grumpy and even grumpier in the beginning but gets on with the program fairly quick making most of the book about how they live their lives together, mating and such and not so much about their struggles getting together.

There were also subplots about Kaden's mother, trust funds, politics that once more made the book drag on and on and on. At times they were interesting and showed the growth for both characters as well as bits of how previous pairings are doing and their own roles in these subplots and background plots. How things are changing in the world building. Just... at the place of a slug and with lots of scenes I felt unnecessary or unnecessary long.

I give this book 2.5 (3 because goodreads doesn't like my rating style) out of 5 and I'm sure I won't be reading it again, despite liking the characters. I was also interested in another book of the series but this book was 115 chapters or so and it drained me, took me too long to read and 20% of it was speed reading and pulling teeth. I just can't. I won't be reading the series anymore.

Well this book have one of those ABO dynamics that I really love, a big hunky Omega, the fact that he has one of the most heartwarming personalities I'd read is just the cherry on top.
Kaden being broken and cranky but never treating bad Felix is what a good alpha should behave, he always respected the big Omega and acted fast enough to not losing him, I loved how he remarked the fact that alphas of Felix past pack were fools for not looking how amazing omega he is. His role on politics were a nice touch that added some deep to the story while still focusing on the romance.
Felix, well I described him at the top of the review, he was such a lovely character that I wanted to hug when he wasn't feeling good, he was always trying to be useful for his new pack and my heart ached when he was a little depressed.
The mating ceremony and the relationship were beatuiful, I was really focused on the details, the pack traditions were interesting to read, in this book I liked the pregnancy phase because both of the MCs really wanted to have all those kids.
The book is really long, I mean it's unusual to have a 600 pages book but it's easy to keep reading it, it took two days for me but honestly I just stopped the first one because I needed to sleep.

Rating: 3.5/5
Feels: 🥰😍😊
One Liner: Long book that didn't feel long because the story was just engrossing.
Rec: Yes - don't let the length scare you

Went straight in at book 7 and didn't face any problems with understanding what was going on. Was also my first book featuring the whole omega thing - wasn't sure how I was going to like it. And the book was looooooong - like seriously long! Even with those things, I found myself just reading and reading, totally engrossed in the story. I would describe the story as very readable, not in a 'oh my gosh i can't put this down way' but more in a 'oh i am still reading this and I want to keep reading' (If that makes sense.
