It’s official.
I, Ainsley James, am crazy.
Desperate and crazy.
It’s the only explanation as to why I’m nauseous, standing outside Maverick Lexington’s door.
I mean, it’s possible the stories about his deck of playing cards—with the words IOU scrawled across the back—are just rumors of the ruthless quid pro quo deals he barters.
But the flutters in my stomach know better.
Maverick is as cold as they come.
But, I need one of those cards.
I NEED to owe Maverick Lexington a favor…
Whatever the terms, I’m willing to pay.
Because, at this point, I have nothing left to lose.

When you become invested in a main character and experience a myriad of emotions in the very first chapter, you know it's going to be a damn good book!

I adore Maverick and Ainsley! He's broody, mysterious, and alpha. She's quirky, sassy, and fucking hilarious! Together, they're nothing short of perfection! I hope Kristy gives us a cameo of these two in future books. I've become attached! 😭 The side characters stole my heart, too! I need their stories! All of them!

IOU is the kind of book we all desperately needed to read in 2020. The premise is intriguing af. It's a fun hate (briefly) to roomates to friends to lovers romance. The writing pulls you in and doesn't let go. You'll smile to your face hurts, swoon the whole way through, but most of all, you'll LAUGH! You'll FEEL the friendship and love between the characters. You'll fall head over heels for this story and the author that brought it to you.

This is a book that makes you feel GOOD. In a year that brought us copious amounts of stress, anxiety, heartache, and bullshit of every flavor, it's the fresh breath of the
feels, love, and humor we deserved!

Romantic comedy fans and everybody coming out of the year from hell, this one's for you!

It took me a whole week to finish reading this book and it is only a 230-page book! It was neither funny nor sexy or romantic enough for me. Just meh... or was it even meh? I really don't know. It was just not good enough.

It was boring, childish and meaningless for me. And silly. What he did was silly. The way he led his life and his IOU cards. All silly. And him doing it so seriously was even sillier.

In case you don't know, Maverick does people favors in exchange for an IOU card. He plays the tough and scary guy as an appearance but in fact he is just an anti-social nerd who is trying to save his grandfather's company while also trying to finish his school. The tough and scary guy is all an act. He also has a serious heart condition at this young age. All in all, he never felt real. He was like a cartoon character. He didn't come to life. I think he was just not a convincing character.

Ainsley is kinda sweet but she is a weak character. She did stupid things that got on my nerves.

As a couple, I never felt their connection. Never believed in their insta-love. Hence, I was never invested in their story.

Every time I took my Kindle to continue reading, I was able to read only 10-20 pages and then I got bored. The reason why I didn't drop it might be the fact that I didn't have anything better to read...

The meaning of the book's name: IOU = I owe you. 💥

📚 “𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐝.
𝐎𝐰𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐚 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫.
𝐈 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐞, 𝐲𝐨𝐮'𝐥𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐭 𝐢𝐭.” 📚

Ainsley finds her boyfriend inside her roommate (literally) and does what any sane person would do: throws a lit candle at him... 🔥
But she hits the curtains instead, causing a fire, the arrival of the fire department and her landlord forbid her to return to her apartment. Heartbroken and desperate with no place to stay, she hears that Maverick - the scariest person on campus that do favors in exchange for debts, is looking for a roommate. He lets her stay with him until he finds another place, and hands her an IOU card (as a reminder that she owes him). 💥

📚 “𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐈’𝐯𝐞 𝐠𝐨𝐭 𝐦𝐲 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐞.” 📚

The first days are full of funny fights (and more and more cards) - but Ainsley has no trouble digging in and discovering the real Maverick, the one even his closest friends have not been able to discover.
Maverick has set rules so that no one could get close enough to find out what secrets he is hiding, but all of his plans go down the drain when Ainsley enters his life. ❤❤❤

Ainsley is... weird! I laughed at everything that came out of her mouth. I would definitely want a friend like her - cheeky, funny and totally crazy!!!! 😂
Maverick is the complete opposite, grumpy and mysterious, but beneath the rugged appearance he cares for the people close to him. ❤
They were perfect for each other. Each of their interactions made me laugh... and watching these two fight - and then fall in love, was so much fun. My favorite thing was that their relationship was not instalove, it was a journey. (but mostly, I liked that he fell in love with her first. SWOON!!!) 😍🔥👑

📚 “𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐬.” 📚

What worked less for me was the lack of information about Maverick's "secret." I did not want anything dramatic, but a little more reference would have given depth to the story. And also, Ainsley made me cry with laughter, but sometimes the things she did and said were TOO stupid - but oh well, this is a comedy... 😂😂😂
Plus, towards the end there was an unnecessary drama.

In conclusion, I read quite a few "roommates" romances, but this one was different, refreshing and funny. ❤
The book will suit anyone who wants a break, because even though it's a light comedy and has no depth - I had a smile on my face throughout the reading. 👑

Overall Opinion: I hate being in the minority! I was seriously expecting to have to hide out in the living room to not wake my husband up because I’d be laughing out loud with this one...but I don’t think that happened once. Not that it wasn’t amusing! I just wasn’t amused enough to literally laugh out loud. I’m not sure if it is my sense of humor or what, but I didn’t feel the same as my GR friends about this being hilarious. I felt like it was a cute story but lacked the depth to make it great. I think the author has potential though and she might have some great books in the future!

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Ainsley and Maverick’s story. Ainsley finds her long term boyfriend cheating on her with her roommate and reacts poorly so that she is now homeless too. She has heard of Maverick and his ability to do favors for people in exchange for an IOU and Ainsley is desperate so she seeks him out. Maverick likes his anonymity and doesn’t want this crazy girl to live with him, but he made her a deal and he never breaks a deal. The more time they spend together, the more they like, and they end up falling in love. There are some crazy scenes, a few sexy times, and some serious moments...and they get a HEA ending.

Point Of View (POV): This alternated between Ainsley and Maverick’s POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Good. I never skimmed and thought it felt well (other than the abrupt ending)

Instalove: No, they take a while to develop stronger feelings

H (Hero) rating: 3 stars. Maverick. I felt like he was meant to be mysterious and have all of these deep issues going on, but they were only lightly touched — so I don’t feel like we got very deep into his character.

h (heroine) rating: 3 stars. Ainsley. She was crazy in a fun way, but I don’t think we got deep into her character either.

Sadness level: Low, no tissues needed

Push/Pull: Yes

Heat level: Good. They have some good tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex: Yes

OW (Other Woman)/OM (Other Man) drama: Yes

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: Not between mcs

Separation: No

Possible Triggers: Yes

Closure: This had what felt like abrupt closure and what I would probably classify as a HEA. I felt as though the ending was to please those of us that need that HEA but didn’t necessarily feel like it fit...if that makes sense.

Safety: This one should be Safe for most safety gang readers

As soon as I cracked this baby open, I was laughing. Seriously. The first chapter set the stage for what would be a hilariously unique romance I could really sink my teeth into. I've never read a story quite like this one and I recommend it to everyone looking for a hilarious romance.

Mysterious, alpha hero ✔
Sassy, fearless heroine ✔
An entertaining set of side characters ✔
A must-read college love story ✔

After finding her boyfriend cheating on her with her roommate, Ainsley is out of friends, out of a home, and out of options. What's a college girl to do? Sleep in her car. What she didn't count on was a 'guardian angel' in the form of a firefighter, a man who was watching out for her. A man who could put up with her idiosyncrasies when other's wouldn't, but he could only do so much. When she's finally desperate, she goes to the one person who can really help her. A man known around campus to collect favors. Maverick was definitely holding all the cards and when it came to Ainsley, he had no problem letting her rack up more debts.

There were tons of things to like about this book, such as the brooding Maverick, who was upset (and yet, not so much) about how Ainsley completely smashed through his life like an elephant in a China shop. For her, his rules were more like guidelines and his secrets were only safe until she ultimately dug them up. Their banter, their every interaction, prompted a laugh from me and I'm sure many others will find them just as humorous as I did.

5 BIG SEA LION STARS

“It’s like I’ve got my own personal genie”

This book is everything I needed in life!!
I adored everything about this book. It was fun, flirty, hilarious and a slow burn romance with an enemies to lovers trope. I adored the banter between Ainsley and Maverick.

“Rumor has it she’s a psycho”

Ainsley was the perfect heroine. She was sassy and hilarious and exactly what Mav needed. She was a mess and unlike any character you have read about before.

“Take a card.
Owe him a favour.
I promise, you'll regret it.”

Maverick was broody and mysterious. He had a scary persona but underneath that hard exterior he really cared about the people closest to him (his pops, brother and Ainsley of course)

After Ains finds out that her boyfriend had been cheating on her with her roommate she is heartbroken. She leaves but she has no place to stay. She stays in her car for the night but then her ‘guardian angel’ in the form of a firefighter swoops in and lets her stay at the firestation for a couple of nights. But she can’t stay there forever. Out of friends and options Ainsley is desperate and asks for help of a man known around campus to collect favours. Maverick kept racking up debts for Ainsley but she didn’t care, for her his rules were more like guidelines and she had no difficulty in digging up the real Maverick when even his closest friends couldn’t

I really loved this book and would recommend it. Every one of their interaction prompted a laugh out of me. The side characters were amazing too and I can't wait to read about them, I'm sure you guys would love this book as much as I did.

It took me some time to warm up to the writing style, the chopped disorienting beginnings of every chapter were confusing... but I got used to them and found myself enjoying the story and really caring for the characters.

You will probably hate the hero, Maverick, in the beginning, he gave out a strange "jerk-y" vibe at first... but when you get to know him better, he'll grow on you. The heroine, Ainsley, was a crazy and fun spitfire, I really liked her sass and humour.

Sure, I've noticed sexy qualities here and there. Especially his dark, messy hair and tattoos. But he always has a shield up. That shield keeps you from enjoying the hottest things about him, like his smile. His quick-witted personality. And his beautiful broken heart.
- Girl, I get you.

I want everything from Ainsley James. Every second of crazy. Every angry word. I want it all. Every inch she's willing to let me see.
- Yeah, Maverick will grow on you for sure.

Those two made my heart melt and gave me such a fussy feeling, I wanted to hug them. And now I want to read everything else by the author.

IOU is a re-read for me; I needed a light, fun read.

What a small apartment fire in the whole scheme of things when you find your boyfriend cheating on you, your roommate! Ainsley James is bat-shit crazy, and I’m here for it.

Ainsley now funds herself homeless and desperate. She finds herself knocking on Maverick’s door. Macerick is the famous man who does favors for others but is never free, and he gives you an IOU to return the favor; he is cold and calculative. Like a true poker player.

Ainsley pushes all of Maverik's buttons and keeps him on his toes. I love the banter between the two. So many times, I couldn't stop laughing. The drunk sidewalk scene is a classic.

IOU Is still one of my top reads. It's a fun, sexy read.

August,2020
The writing style of IOU is not what I am used to. However, I will say I did enjoy it very much. I couldn't stop laughing.

I absolutely loved Ainsley; she is my kind of crazy, strong, and I love how she puts up with bull.
Ainsley is off of work early, goes home, and finds her boyfriend, Tucker, having sex with her roommate. Instead of screaming, she throws a lite candle at them and sets the curtains on fire.

At this point, though, you’re probably wondering why I’m screaming, ‘Fuck you!’ instead of grabbing some water and helping Tucker pull the curtain rod down. It’s simple. I hate Tucker and hope his dick catches fire.

Ainsley is now kicked out of her apartment and banned from the building. After a few days of being homeless and desperate, she is now knocking on Maverick's door for a favor. Maverick is moody, to say the least, and sexy as hell. Maverick does let Ainsley stay with him against his better judgment until he finds her a new place. For each favor he gives her, she has an IOU to him.

The banter between the two is funny. Maverick has his rules and walls up, and Ainsley keeps breaking his rules and puts up with nothing ,says how it is.

And that’s what I adore about her. She is who she is. Take her or leave her—she conforms to no one. Not even me.

I loved how Maverick accepted Ainsley for how she is, didn't try to change her, and helped encourage her with her dreams. They are both what they exactly need.

If you are looking for a book to help lift you, I recommend IOU

You know when a book is epically beautiful and downright hilarious when, by the end of reading it, you are positively glowing... Well, that is the feels I have from reading this book. It's been a couple of days since I have read IOU but I am still high from the endorphin rush. I am giddy! I had a constant smile on my face throughout this whole book.

Maverick and Ainsley are characters that you will undoubtedly fall in love with. If you think you already have a favorite character from one of Kristy's books, someone that you compare characters to, then prepare for your loyalty to be tested. Mine was and I failed because Maverick and Ainsley are my ultimate OTP. Ainsley is unlike any character you have read before. She is a mess. A perfect quirky mess! I was constantly laughing at the stuff that came out of her mouth. I loved being in her head. She is witty and wacky and although Maverick scared her, she was completely herself. And that is what made Maverick fall in love with our little firebug.

Maverick, oh Maverick, oh Maverick... So grumpy... So closed-off... So sexy... So my new favorite! He was so perfect for Ainsley. They balanced each other. He was such a mystery and puzzle that I wanted to crack. The method behind his IOU's was ingenious! I so desperately wanted to know why Ainsley was at Maverick's door! That blurb was during me crazy. I had this picture, in my head, of what Maverick is going to be like and how he is going to behave and in certain aspects he was like that but he still surprised me. I was captivated by him.
I loved the fact that Mav and Ain's relationship was not rushed. It had a slow burn feel to it.(I'm a total sucker for that btw.) We got to feel what they felt. It was a journey that we got to be a part of.

Kristy deviated from her normal genre and our favorite marines and decided to try something new–to give us something new to experience–and it paid off. This is book that you can't help but fall in love with.

I absolutely LOVED this one!

I wasn't expecting the main characters to be college students. I felt cheated when I learned that but in the long run? It didn't matter. Oh Maverick and Ainsley. Such a great pair!
Ainsley wasn't as crazy as she was made out to be, I mean I have seen far more crazy in my life so maybe I'm immune to it but I loved her. And Maverick was, hands down, one of the best male characters. And his bond with his friends was amazing and their conversations? Hilarious.

I never even knew I wanted it until I read it- sea lions, a deck of cards(which btw I don't know how to play for shit), a nosy firefighter, a manwhore attention hungry best friend, a crazier and funny mother of a crazy daughter and an even greater grandfather of a poker playing grandson, a pretend bad boy who is actually a hot nerd and a seemingly crazy girl full of life, love and sass.

This was so freaking good, I want to kiss the author right now.

The comedy part was amazing. I found their banter and their actions towards each other truly amusing, at least until they got together. After that it was predictable and cheesy. My main issue though was the whole plot around the cards, I found it ridiculous tbh. I tried to overlook the absurdity of it all, but the more the story progressed, the more ludicrous it seemed🙈

3 very low and bored stars...

IOU is... the exact kind of book that makes me roll my eyes the ENTIRE time I read it. It has almost all of the things I hate in books:

1. Takes itself way too seriously with absolutely no reason too.
So much forced intrigue and ~*mystery*~ for something that really isn't that big a deal.

2. "Quirky" girls, who aren't quirky they just speak with a lot of exclamation points and have very little social skills.
But what do you know, a lot of that shit disapears after getting together with the hero and magically she's just a lil cutie you wanna cuddle for being so dorky aWwWwz.

3. Inappropriate reactions to people being shitty.
Granted the book did address how fucking awful Taylor and Tucker were but goddamn I feel like only Ainsley had an realistic reaction to it. Everyone else was like... "sweetie, time to get over it. It's been 3 hours, why are you still stuck on this???"

Ainsley was... very exhausting of a character for the first half of the book. The author tried so hard to make her quirky that it made me think of how men write women to be either this perfect sex goddess who doesn't know she's hot, a bitchy hot girl, or an ugly serious girl who's lowkey repulsive with her personality and opinions. Ainsley went from the third to the first REAL QUICK. She became interesting and hot and gave no fucks right when the plot needed it!
PAR EXAMPLE...
Who brushes their teeth in the shower? Never mind. Of course she brushes her teeth in the shower.

.... first of all, I do. It saves a lot of time and let's you hang out in the shower for longer than necessary because who doesn't love that shit. Maybe I'M the QuIrKy fun cutie girl after all 🤪

Maverick... did he have a real personality? Because I can't find it. He was pretty much just smoke and mirrors and a fucking deck of cards. Why all the drama? Why all the secrecy around his work and lifestyle? I'm pretty sure you can be a "water drinking nerd" and still put the fear of god into people. Turns out he's not this mysterious batman hides in the shadow cool guy, he's just a normal person who works too much and gets boners over personality traits.

I almost put this book down at 25% because it was extremely frustrating to switch between Ainsley's forced weirdo POV and Maverick's nonsense fake mystery. All his mystery and secrecy made for a really limp dick of a conflict right at the end and since it was lame as fuck, it got resolved in under 30 seconds.

All of that being said..... I regrettably liked them together 🙄
For some reason once Maverick started liking Ainsley, I got invested and wanted to see how it played out. Unfortunately, they were really cute together and that forced me to read the whole damn thing.
Maybe I'm just a mean, picky bitch but sometimes I read books and wish they were written by someone different and with a LOT of things improved.
This story really shouldn't have been about kids in university. It would make a lot more sense with people in their late 20's or 30's.

Bla bla bla I'm picky but this wasn't as horrible as I thought it would be. Do with that what you will.

This was so damn cute and funny. It was such a unique concept and I really enjoyed the fast pace of the book.

Ainsley was such a smartass and I loved her for it. It was a breath of fresh air I didn’t realise I needed.

Maverick was an adorable grump. His whole backstory was something I loved and I really liked that there was minimal drama that came from him.

Overall it was a really fun romcom to destress and relax.

𝗦𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗲:
I might read the next books in the series because aspen’s character sounds so interesting. And Sebastian has me… intrigued because I love his charisma.

4 stars. This book was so fun. It really was a five star read until the end when the story went a little off the rails. It felt like the author couldn’t think of anything good to create drama in the third act and her choice ended up just being somewhat silly. There were also a few unanswered questions that I felt the author should have clarified.

I really like a book where the heroine is betrayed but finds someone much better. The hero was a huge upgrade over her ex.

Safe
No Virgins
Heroine walks in on her boyfriend having sex with her roommate at the start
Heroine has only ever been with her ex before hero
Hero not a manwhore and had been celibate for an unknown length of time
No scenes with OM/OW
No cheating between MCs
No OW drama, some OM drama from heroine’s ex.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

This story delivered a fresh and original storyline with laughter and feels that I have come to expect from the author. I wouldn’t mind owing favors to the one and only Maverick Lexington! This hot AF card/loan shark has all the right moves. He’s the king of favors and he always cashes in!!!

Maverick is the guy you seek out on campus when you need something. He’ll make it happen, but there is always a price to be paid. He’ll help you out and you’ll owe him a favor whenever he decides to call it in. The man is clever. He knows exactly how to get what he wants.

Ainsley is quirky, a little bit crazy (but the good kind), and a whole bunch of fun! I adored her. She’s just been screwed over by her long time boyfriend and her roommate. Now with no place to live, she’s looking for the guy that makes things happen. He’s her last hope.

Maverick is willing to help, but it’s going to cost her. He never agrees to a favor without getting what he wants. Mav just took on more than he ever expected. This is one IOU that’s life changing.

I read IOU in one sitting because I was swept up in this super fun and sassy romance. The story brings us some of the best secondary characters that you’ll absolutely love. The build up and tension between Maverick and Ainsley was straight up HOT! There was such incredible wit, interlaced with emotion and constant laughs. The author kept a smile on my face the entire time and I LOVED these characters.

***** 5 GENIE IN A BOTTLE STARS *****

Well Kristy Marie did it again....just when I thought I couldn't love her writing any more, she has created a new world with unique and quirky characters who will make you laugh and swoon with every page!

K Marie's books are ones that when I open the pages, I just feel like I'm "home." The characters are relatable, the story lines are easy, witty, yet unexpected at times. They will draw every emotion from you, and at the end of it - you are crying for more. This is exactly what IOU was for me...I didn't want it to end. I was grinning from ear to ear at this surprising couple, and fell just as hard for every side character as I did for both Maverick and Ainsley. And there is a cameo in here that if you are a K Marie fan, will have you standing up and cheering!

I don't want to spoil one thing about this book because that is the fun of it....it will surprise you at every page! I am SO head over heels in love with these characters and their story, and have already begged K Marie for more of them! Well done once again!!!

IOU [noun] A signed document acknowledging a debt .
Late 18th century: representing the pronunciation of I owe you

This was a very sweet and funny book , but the plot very lacking. The heroine is crazy and a trainwreck and the hero is focused , calm and collected, so the combination was quite good. They had chemistry and the banter flowed easily with no awkward conversations.

[ I read this book with Mar Mar bookaholic and we actually wanted the story to go in another direction as: the old firefighter "Boss" to be the H and this book to become an age gap trope lol, would have been fun and totally hot (you ll know what I mean if you read the book )]
Overall the perfect read for a good laugh and an easy evening.

I will start this review with how much I envy Ainsley! 🤷

Reasons :
1) She is such an amazing character! She is passionate. She is caring. She is brave, fiesty and fierce. She is funny. And I wish I could be her, or like her!
2) She has got Mav and Boss. Mav and Boss? Characters I wish I had for myself. Even her mom, guys!!

Coming back to work in hand...
Ainsley was desparate. She needed a place to stay. And considering the rumours around her, only Maverick Lexington can help her now. Only.. she has to owe him a favour with those IOU cards. Yup, desparate and crazy.

Now our big bad scary boy Maverick. I want to talk about him so much, but I won't. I don't want some crazy pyromanic burning down my home! (Sorry, Ainsley!)

I loved their relationship. Their banter.
How Ainsley had so many IOUs that :
"IOU too many favors to count—consider my life yours. Do with me as you wish."
Which, directly or indirectly, led Mav to hospital! 😂😂😂

This is definitely a fun read! Oh, I loved the Dedication! 😜

And this is Ainsley and Maverick :
She swats me on the arm as her eyes water. “Why are you the sweetest asshole ever?”

My heart aches at the teary strain in her voice. “You were the best thing to ever happen to me,” I admit. “I don’t care that you love Lawrence more than me, I’ll settle for being second best in your life.”

I may not have known my real father, but I have adopted Boss and he’s better than that sperm donor.

Do you know what is a perfect romance? When you laugh and swoon so much that you feel sad when the book ends.
And that's how all Kristy's books are. You're constantly laughing out loud and swoon about the sweet but very alpha men in her books.
Don't let them know I said sweet 🤭 they will flip out and run for the next exit 🤣 You know, we're talking about this kind of men.
I love this YA novel.
I don't know what you're looking for in your romance, but this story has all the right feelings I love in my favorite romances. Heartbreak, hilarious and emotional unstable, but badass heroine (I love her! She is hilarious ❤) and a lot of drama and obstacles to read it in one go, because is so damn exciting.
And of course litty-bitty erotic 😉
The love story is so unique like all Kristy's books.
Just amazeballs 🤗.
It's a light and sweet read for everyone.
I've read all her books and not just this one and her humor and amazing characters are addictive. No, I'm not going to tell you what this story is about.
If you love YA romances, then you will definitely love this book, trust me.
And one more thing, if you haven't read Kristy's books, what are you waiting for? Her Commander in Briefs series is one of my all favorites ever.

Kristy Marie may not be most mainstream of names when it comes to romance writers but she is one of it's finest contributors. Her characters and stories are personal and relatable. Educational and funny. Captivating and engaging. And most of all passionate and heartbreaking.

IOU is no exception. She once again weaves a story that has you hooked from the very beginning, and captivates, mesmerizes, and dazzles you to the very end.

You meet Ainsley James & Maverick Lexington and the fire that brought them together. She's crazy & desperate & in love with sea lions and he's the most secretive guy around.

So while Kristy's brilliance isn't widely recognized just yet, it is there. And this book is just another proof

** updated May 2025. The audiobook was fantastic and made the book even more enjoyable. I purchased the 21 Rumors box set. Highly recommend.

This book is a Royal Flush.

One of my most anticipated books of this year. Since I first discovered this author, I have watched her steadily get better and better. From the get-go, this author had a gift at creating a story that resonated with me but this one might just be my favorite that she has written.

From the blurb, the cover, to the actual story, this book not only met my expectations but surpassed them. The premise of the story was unlike anything I had read before. It was fresh and unique and much needed in romancelandia where, like it or not, there seems to be a rehashing of the same old stories. That isn't to knock other romance books because no one is reinventing the wheel here but it is always a much needed reprieve to have something so unexpected; a palette cleanser of a sort.

Strong characters, a dash of mystery in regards to the IOU's and what they meant or when/if they would be cashed in, and chemistry galore. I loved Maverick, he was everything and then some, but perhaps the one that stole the show was Ainsley. Sweet holy hell, this little spitfire of a pyromaniac. Her quirkiness was refreshing. Watching her regain her purpose and self-identity was endearing. Together, these two were fire, only no fire-extinguishers were needed to put them out. There were twists to this story that I didn't see coming which made me like the book that much more.

From the first page to the last page this was a book that I couldn't read fast enough, even knowing that by reaching the end that it would be over. That is the true hallmark of a great book. Loved the secondary characters (I want more of them) including some tied to the CiB series (This scene; in particular; had me laughing for obvious reasons!), and I left feeling like this author could take me in several different directions and I would be more than okay with that.

I highly recommend this book. There is a reason that this author is one of my favorites.

My first 5 star read of 2025! I initially wasn't sure about this book and thought that it was something I would have enjoyed maybe 5 years ago...but I was wrong. Save for the few chapters in the beginning which made me think that this would be a 3 to 4 star read (because personally, I would have liked Ainsley to make Tucker and her roommated PAY for what they did...but I digress), this book was really good🥰 I would be lying if I said that I didn't have a cheesy ass grin for nearly half the book haha🫣 Really enjoyed reading about Ainsley and Maverick and how their relationship progressed - esp Mav's secret soft and nerdy side🥹 Also, their chemistry was OFF. THE. CHARTS. The whole 'this is supposed to only be a favor/contract but I want her' was EPIC🫠 Maverick telling Ainsley to teach him what she liked? The 'fuck it' moment? The soft kisses and passion between them? AMAZING!😮‍💨 So glad I picked this up and would totally recommend it if you enjoy college romances with forced proximity and he falls first and harder!

safety squad:
- no OW/OM drama (H gets possessive over the h when her ex tries to talk to her)
- no cheating/sharing
- forced proximity
- no virgins (the h has only ever been with her ex but she's not portrayed to be innocent or naive)
- no manwhores (no hoe vibes; it's been months since the H had sex)
- slowburn (I think???)
- no condoms
- protective MCs
- mentions of parental neglect, MS, stroke, heart problems, on page cheating (NOT between MCs - it was her ex who cheated on her with her roommate), etc so don't forget to check the TWs!
- HEA (with engagement and a pregnancy)

5 Showing Your Hand Crowns

Kristy has done a thing; a brand-new NA Romance is coming your way. This book has everything: Feisty AF Heroines, Brooding Bad Boys, Off the Charts Chemistry that will set your Kindle on FIRE!!!!! This right here is what I love about NA Romances. You absolutely NEED this in your life.

Those stormy eyes flash with an intensity I’ve never seen from Maverick. At least when he’s not been pissed.

Maverick is absolutely amazing; this man tries so hard to be aloof and unfeeling but deep down you can tell that he’s the exact opposite. Kristy has created him with so many layers, written with such precision divulging one layer at a time until you’re completely obsessed with him. I loved that you got to see the evolution of his character as the pages go on, giving you more and more pieces of him to love.

I welcome the heat of her body and hold her tight, breaking all my fucking rules today.

Ainsley is the BEST. This girl is quirky and fun but also super feisty which I love in my heroines. There are so many moments where she puts Maverick in his place in the best way and it makes you fall a little bit more in love with her every time. Her character is so much stronger than she gives herself credit for, she’s been through some crappy circumstances but she’s here standing and trying to figure out who she wants to be. I loved watching her and Maverick together you could feel the tension pouring from the pages building and building until it’s about to combust. These two are pure Kindle FIRE!!!

“My heart can handle you, I promise.”

Kristy has this wonderful way with words that draws you completely and utterly into every story that she creates holding you captive until the last page. She creates one of kind characters that give you all the feels and more, and Ainsley and Maverick are no different. I absolutely loved this book from start to finish it will have a smile on your face and leave a lightness on your heart… This is a definite MUST READ!!!!
