This is still just as cute as I remember it being as a kid.

Still love the characters Jamie, Mack, John, Samuel, Elias, Mary Laddle, Thomas, and Owela. Ben Sparks deserved what he got though.

Mack and Owela's subtle romance is sweet and rather forward thinking for the time it takes place in, talking about compromise to make things work between them. Gives the reader a little bit of insight as to how Oneida might have been back when the Americans were throwing tea in the harbor and such. The author even has the characters talk briefly of Paul Revere.

Of the five books I bought home to read from the Balanced Literacy books, this was my favorite. It is a journey by two youngsters across North America. The writing style adds more flavour and description to a predicatable tale that highlights events leading up to the American Revolution. It was cool to hear of people like Paul Revere from another perspective
