Hello toes, our tootsie friends

Hello, summer feet again!

Canadas Dr. Seuss, Sheree Fitch, is back with a brand-new tongue-twisting picture book that celebrates all things summer. From those first barefoot days, wobble-dy walking over rocks and pebbles, to wandering-wild while searching for sea glass and, finally, huddled-up cozy at a late-summer bonfire, these summer feet flutter kick, somersault, hide-and-seek, and dance in the rain, soaking up all the season has to offer.

With Fitch's classic lip-slippery, lyrical rhymes and Carolyn Fisher's bright and colourful illustrations, Summer Feet will be an instant summertime favourite.

From the Writer's Federation of Nova Scotia:

"Sheree Fitch is an educator, literacy activist and author of award winning poetry, picture books, nonfiction, plays and novels for all ages. Her first book, Toes in My Nose, illustrated by Molly Lamb Bobak, was launched in 1987. The books that followed have garnered numerous awards, including The Mr. Christie Award for There Were Monkeys in My Kitchen, The Anne Connor Brimer Award for Mable Murple. If You Could Wear my Sneakers, a book on Children's Rights commissioned by Unicef won both the Ontario Silver Birch Award and Atlantic Hackmatack award.

In 1998 she won the prestigious Vicky Metcalf award for a body of work inspirational to Canadian Children. She has been goodwill ambassador for Unicef since 1994 and her lipslippery adventures have taken her to remote parts of the globe.

Her work as a poet and literacy educator has taken her to the Arctic as eight-time poet laureate for Peter Gzowski's fundraisers for literacy and to Bhutan where she taught writing and participated in that country's first national reading week. Author readings have taken her to Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Belize and Mexico.

Currently, she is Honorary Spokesperson for the New Brunswick Coalition for Literacy. The coalition recently initiated the Sheree Fitch Adult Learner Scholarships. She is also Honorary Spokesperson for the Nova Scotia Read to Me Program. This program provides literacy information to new parents and books for newborns. Each year she sponsors a writing competition for New Brunswick Youth. Her latest venture in literacy education includes completing a three year (summer ) writer in residency for Somebody's Daughter --- out on the tundra in Nunavut. This is an innovative program for Inuit women started by Bernadette Dean, Sheree's friend and former student from a writing workshop Ftich held during one of her soujourns to the north.

In the fall 2004, Gooselane Editions released an expanded anniversary edition of her adult book of poetry In This House Are Many Women and Orca published Pocket Rocks, illustrated by Helen Flook.

In May 2005, Fitch's first novel (ages ten and up), The Gravesavers, was published by Doubleday Canada Random House. A coming of age story blended with a historical event—the wreck of S.S. Atlantic in 1873—Fitch considers the novel "a kind of love letter" to her Maritime home and a celebration of her roots. Upcoming books include If I Had A Million Onions, a collection of nonsense for all ages and Peek a Little Boo, a book for babies.

Fitch lives with her husband, Gilles Plante and divides her time between Washington D.C. and River John, Nova Scotia. In demand as a visiting author, workshop leader and keynote speaker, she is currently working on an adult novel. She holds a B.A. from St. Thomas, an M.A. from Acadia University and honorary doctorates from both St. Mary's and Acadia for her contribution to Canadian literature and education. She has two grown children."

Hmmm… I guess this will appeal to some, but I'm not sure the younger version of me, now almost lost to the mists of memory, would have liked it much. It uses a lot of word-play and techniques like kenning to build up a script that has the sensibility of spoken word and rap, and which shows as many possibilities as it can for being barefoot in nature – at the seaside, squelching through mud, dancing around farms, snuggling up with marshmallows and a campfire, etc. It's certainly gone for the liveliness a young reader may find appealing – we have multiple font size shifts, wavy text lines and more. So while al fresco summers might seem like the subject of a classical, canonical bit of poetry, this is anything but. I can't say I took to the visuals, either – I think there were too many examples of when we could have had a really eye-catching double-page spread, but it's more akin to a sort of messy Gauguin approach. Certainly people who are footophobic (for want of googling the right term) will not like many of the shots here – that wasn't why I disliked it, but as I say it just didn't really float my boat.

Summer Feet is a perfect picture book to read with children during the Summer, especially when the weather is nice enough to finally get those toes out of shoes/boots. It was an homage to feet and the sensations and activities that come with bare feet. Over the summer you could participate in many of these activities such as walking barefoot in grass, sand, over rocks and pebbles, squish in the mud, dance in the rain or race through a pasture. There is a lot of new vocabulary in this book that is highlighted by the large, colourful illustrations. The text is written with a rhythmic cadence, but it was not the same from page to page. I enjoyed this book with one complaint. It became repetitive and my granddaughter began to lose interest. It was a bit long, so with the younger one, I read it in two sittings. Overall a beautiful book that I will be pulling out again in the late spring when we look forward to going barefoot once again.

I thought that this was a great and fun book!

It is a book that really does celebrates all things summer!

It is the idea book to read at this time of the year and I also liked that you could follow the story and make sure that you do as many of the different activities on a summer break too - walking barefoot in grass, sand, over rocks and pebbles, searching for sea glass and, finally, huddled-up cozy at a late-summer bonfire - bliss!

A great way to be interactive!! It is 5 stars from me for this one!!

I adored this book. It's all about tossing off our shoes and enjoying a barefoot summer. I'll admit, I forget all about folding socks when summer hits and try to go barefoot as much as possible! This is a beautiful, rhyming picture book that remind me of my favourite season of the year! And the illustrations are gorgeous <3

Good and less good in this children book. I like the sort of homage to the naked feet and the way we can enjoy going around with them, especially for those of us who knows winter... I also enjoy the words plays and rhythmic the sentences have. Unfortunately I find the book really repetitive and overall it hasn't much to say and those homage felt a bit long. So I can,t give it higher than a fair three. It was okay!

This is a playful use of words to describe what it is like to walk around in bare feet in the summer. IT goes on and on until it is autumn again, and one has to return to the world of shoes.

I found it painfully long. I suppose as a celebration of bare feet it was ok, but it took a long time to say that having summer and bare feet are a good combination.

As an adult I found it boring. Maybe children will enjoy the bright colors, and the dscritpoins of what having bare feet are like.

But I would pass on this one.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

I love Sheree Fitch's work. She is dubbed as Canada's Dr. Seuss and kids love her books and wonderful sense of humour. Her newest book, "Summer Feet", is a celebration of many things you can experience while toe-trucking through your world. Kids will be delighted to shed their shoes and socks and say...

"Hello toes, our tootsie friends
Hello, summer feet again!"

FREEDOM! Freedom to explore, discover and wander-wild every single day finally letting your piggies go... unleashed! Those bare-naked feet will get tickled as they race through pastures of grass, get mushy and dirty as they sink deep into the mud, twirl and pirouette as they dance in the rain, and wobble-dy-walk to escape the ouch ouch of gravelly rocks, just to name a few.

The rhythmic words and playful scenarios will be a great hit with kids and encourage them to let loose their ten little digits ( at least for the summer season) and de-feet that feeling of being held back before they must re-boot once again as the weather cools down.

The illustrations show a diversity of kids and are colourful and whimsical with text swirling through them. The flavour of the book is bright, happy and summery. I highly recommend this book.

Title: Summer Feet
Author: Sheree Fitch
Illustrator: Carolyn Fisher
Grades 1-2
Youtube: Summer Feet by Sheree Fitch

Known for her tongue-twisters and “lip slippery adventures in words and language,” her purpose is to trick and make you feel happy when reading. It’s the start of summer; socks and shoes are kicked-off for that summer freedom. The illustrations make reading this tongue twister silly, fun, and exciting for summer. The author shares summer activities that all can play, such as rolling down hills, running in the sun, playing Red Rover, Red Rover, and listening to the sounds of summer, all done in “bare naked summer feet.” She continues and describes all the wonders of summer that include visiting the beach, swimming in the ocean, all in our “bare naked feet.” As the seasons start to change, a cool breeze in the air, the reader is reminded to put on their warm cozy socks and shoes as they will soon meet again next summer. I would recommend this story for its unique way of sharing what summer is all about.

I found this book on the NCTE Notable Poetry Books for 2021 and the author read it aloud herself on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usTwK...
I had to check this one out because my husband incessantly talks about summer feet each year and I think it's a farce. I have to hide this book from him. The language is complex and full of alliteration and twists and turns. The word pictures and illustrations are beautiful. It's a glorious ode to summer and makes me so happy the season is approaching. I see this book being a great one with my own kids and all English speakers K-3rd grade. I do struggle to see this working with ESL students. It would be a lot to take in since it's less about the emotions of poetry and more about playing with words. Still a fun book.

Today’s the day
we kick off shoes
hide away socks

Today’s the day
Our summer feet shout
LET US OUT.

The main characters in this book are the feet of the children. In Summer, the feet come out of the shoes and socks and explore nature in their bare-naked form. The bare-naked feet walk over hard rocks, tumble down hills, climb trees, play hide-and-seek and many other activities.

Summer Feet is a perfect picture book to read with children this Summer. It also provides for activities to do in Summer. Hurry up and grab this book because Autumn is coming and the feet have to be imprisoned in boots and socks soon.

"Summer Feet" by Sheree Fitch is a cute children's tale that tells the story of the adventures that summer time bare feet go on. The pages are wonderfully fun with plenty of adjectives that thoroughly describe all of the kid friendly summer activities like playing in the dirt and making smores. The book did seem a little overly complicated in terms of wording and was somewhat difficult to read aloud. Despite this, our family enjoyed the story and loved the summery fun found inside this book!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an electronic copy to read and review.

An adorable book about the beauty of exploring barefoot outside. The illustrations are cute, but I wish there was more diversity in the characters (there is some). I will definitely. be picking up a copy for my classroom to use for descriptive writing lessons. My own children will also love this book for when we are camping.

This book was written in 2020 and is a fun poetry book that has some tongue twisters in it and would make for a good read aloud. It would be a good book to read at the end of the school year to get kids more excited for fun summer adventures.

Abit long for a summer ST. I can see a family reading it for bedtime or read aloud. The feet doing all kinds of summer activities was cute (trampoline, gardening, swimming, etc.) I just felt like it was too much text for a ST.
