What does a young Amish girl do when she has feelings for a young Amish boy, only to lose him when his parents turn Mennonite?

I have never really thought about how it affects the whole family, as well as friends and church members when someone leaves the Amish faith. It’s not just the act of leaving that affects the one person, but because the Amish are very connected to each other, when someone leaves, others can’t just leave with them – without choosing to leave the faith, too.

Jerry has such a unique way of showing the reality of the plain life - and how family and friends live. Even when children are leaving on planned trips or have important things to do, they are expected to do regular chores and keep up with school, church, and family needs on a daily basis… and they do their chores without fussing (at least in front of their parents).

Rebecca is a fine example of a young Amish girl who travels to another town to care for a family member when her mother tells her to go, yet she spends most of the time just before the trip helping her family, and willingly takes on her aunt’s duties for several weeks until her aunt is well enough to handle them.

This is an amazing trilogy… and definitely worth reading!

I have loved Amish fiction for awhile, and at one point I was told that Eicher was a good writer of Amish Fiction. I wasn't disappointed.

One thing I absolutely loved was that Eicher was not afraid to assign some really controversial points of view to his Amish characters. Usually in Amish fiction the most "out of line" a character gets is perhaps listening to music or dating a Mennonite. There were several characters in Rebecca's Promise that really broke the mold of Amish stereotype and I absolutely loved it. I loved how much more human Eicher's characters were because of it.

I was slightly disappointed by a few plot twists, but I enjoyed how he left it open for the next book in the series. His unique characters are enough to bring me back for more. I will be reading the next book in the series soon.

Jerry S. Eicher is one of those Amish fictions writers that people apparently either love or hate. I happen to love him. Since he was born and raised Amish, you can be certain he's giving you the real Amish world, and not a mawkish sappy one, as do most Amish Romance writers. I think many dislike him precisely because of that. Rebecca's Promise is one of Jerry's better novels. He seems to have grown from his earlier titles. The writing is more fluid and descriptive. I love his detail of day-to-day Amish life. The emotional build up at the end kept me glued to my seat. My only issue, and why I knocked off an extra star, was that he did not resolve the subplot. I felt cheated.

I'm a big fan of Amish novels, but this one was boring. Also, I'm not sure if the author has done much research on the Amish because there were a few contradictions compared to other Amish novels. For example, in the beginning of the book, the couple discusses getting married during Spring. In every other Amish novel I've read, there is a marriage season and that is November. Just something I noticed. If the book had been a little more interesting, I probably would not have mentioned it. I didn't bother to finish it.

I had to FIGHT my way through this book. Yep, this Amish fiction book was THAT bad. I never got invested in the characters and I wound up caring less about what happened to her. AND then there is the Amish family so consumed by inheriting money that turned me off. I am not saying that Amish are not like us...but the way they acted turned me off. This is a pretty short book but I couldn't bring myself to read it. I think I worked on it for over a freaking week. Yeah. That bad.

This was a strange Amish book, very different from other fiction about the Amish. Many things seem to be different than what I've read about the Amish. Are there really rich and poor Amish? Do they spend so much time worrying over money? I have the second book and will most likely go ahead and read it.

The 3 books in this series were on offer in our local Christian bookshop - I thought I should read them before I put them in the church library! It took me a bit to get into the pace of the book but after that I was gripped. There's something compelling about the Amish way of life - the order and peace that comes from living simply. I read all 3 books in a week.

This book was pretty good. There needed to be more trial in it though. I liked the story of Rebecca and Atlee and I'm so glad she got to see him one more time to ease her mind. It was a short and sweet story. I'll read the next book whenever my library gets it.

First of a trilogy, Rebecca's Promise is a book about tradition and promises. When is a promise not worth keeping? When is the first love ever over? Should Rebecca move on with her life or remember the boy she promised to meet on her 21st birthday?

A good Amish fiction book. Rebecca was a good solid character wanting to go what was right in her mind. I feel that I could actually smell the sights and sounds of the Amish Household from the descriptions given. I will add this to my author's that I will want to read more of.

Very good story, enjoyed reading it, my first by this author.

I recommend this story, it was an interesting read. This author is a good storyteller. I read Amish books a lot but I really liked the way this author wrote this thought processing story.

Rebecca is soon to be 21 and has said yes to John’s proposal. However, John’s proposal brings to mind a long forgotten promise to another. Is Rebecca bound to the childhood promise or is it simply to be considered a childish fancy?

I liked it pretty much. I want to read the sequels but can't find them in the library system so I guess I will have to buy them elsewhere. I want to find out who she chooses.

Pretty good book, but not one of my favorites. I normally love any book that is Amish related, but this one just didn't seem to keep me as interested as some of the others I've read.

Apparently I had read/tried to read this before, and it wasn't that memorable the first time. The blurb sounds interesting, but then I pick it up, and just can't get into it. (Sorry).

I just could not get into this book. It was really slow. Although the story was interesting, but I wasn't happy with how it turned out.

Good book. I have liked all the amish books. I like that the story has God involved in it. A test of fte for Rebecca and a promise made when she was very young.

Quaint little story

This book is a revealing look into the thoughts and reflections of young love. I look forward to reading the next 2 books in this trilogy.

True love

Can a love from and promise made by a 6th grader be true love? This is what Rebecca figured out with the help of an old beloved teacher.

I truly enjoyed this book! I was expecting a slower paced story, and a bit more romance, but I was NOT disappointed. The author told the story very well, and all the characters were lovable, with their own unique problems and struggles.
I was, however, just a bit disappointed with how quickly the resolution to the main problem came. After all the buildup throughout the book, I felt that moment deserved to be a little bigger and with more tension. A bit of a cliffhanger, especially where the major subplot is concerned, I look forward to picking up the next book in this series!

Rebecca's Promise is different from most Amish books I have read! Rebecca Keim thinks she loves John Miller and agrees to marry him but keeps thinking about the boy she promised to wait for while in 6th grade. She wonders which boy she really loves. John Miller is a good Amish man but is concerned that something is troubling Rebecca. Rebecca asks her old spinster schoolteacher for advice.

Not wowed but not kicking tires either….the constant fight over “money” was just too much for me. Great author but with some bad subjects within this book. To start the 2nd in the trilogy later this morning. 1am is past bedtime but I wanted answers and I only got one :-(
