Living in Victorian London is difficult at the best of times. So, instead of following in his father’s footsteps, Albert decides on adventure. However, fate has other plans. One drunken night on his way home, he responds to the blood-curdling scream of a woman. He rushes her attacker and in the ensuing fight, he is bitten. Alberts world is changed forever. With that one savage bite, he is turned into a monster that people had believed was just a creation of an authors mind. That night Albert becomes a Vampire. Days turn into months, then years to decades as he struggles with the loss of his soul and humanity. He thought he was alone but as his friends and loved ones pass into memory, his own kind begin to make their presence known.
Nick James is the author of books covering many genres. From ‘The Misplaced Man Trilogy’ and ‘The Victorian Vampire’ to ‘What Zombie Apocalypse’. He has now hit the ground running with science fiction titles; ‘The Time Travelling Tourist’ and his recent release ‘They Stand Among Us’, an alien invasion story. All are written in his easy-to-read style, with action and humor. He has countless other stories and sequels in the planning stages.
Actually, it was more of a romp through history. From early Victorian Britain to 21st century America. Plenty of blood and gore but written in a slightly humorous fashion (well that was my take at least). Actual people and events, straight out of the history books, through to classic pulp fiction mayhem and all topped off with a romantic sub plot. A vampire who prefers human women as his lovers, who acts like a sort of Robin Hood and only tears apart the really bad guys. Yes, it was a fun tale and well worth a read.
DNF. This was not for me. First off the language was far too modern for the time periods, and a Vampire who tells just about everyone he meets that he's a Vampire.... Absolutely not. This could have been so good.
I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads Giveaway and thought the premise was interesting. However, at this point, I'm about a third of the way through it and am not planning to finish it. The characters all use modern speech patterns and slang phrases, instead of matching with the various time periods, and for me, that's a deal breaker. People who like action will enjoy this book, but it wasn't for me.
As soon as I finished Fallen Dynasties I was curious as to what Nick would bring out next. Thankfully I didn't have too long to wait and he didn't disappoint.
The Victorian Vampire gives the old Vampire Lore a much needed shock to it's undead heart, with thankfully no glittery moody teenage vampires. This book mixes the old fable that Bram laid out for us with just a hint of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles to serve up a modern tale.
Unlike the Chronicles we don't linger in any specific time or decade for too long, which on one hand is very refreshing but did occasionally make me wonder what Albert was up to in the decades that were brushed aside, and it's only because of this question that I haven't scored this book five fangs out of five.
Unlike the Misplaced Man trilogy this book closed off it's tale, but I think there could be more to come and I hope we will get to read more about the exploits of Albert's supporting cast as they move around the globe seeking adventures and blood for their demons to play in.
THE VICTORIAN VAMPIRE BY NICK JAMES AND NARRATED BY PAUL HILLIAR is one of the most hilarious vampire stories I have listened to in a long time!
Albert, born into a poor family is bitten by vampire Jack the Ripper in Victorian England. Berty, as his friends call him, takes advantage of his situation by murdering the lowlife thieves and stealing the money they have stolen from others. Albert, surviving and outliving families becomes a agent for the Brits during WWII killing Nazi spies. As the centuries pass by Alberts "life" continues.
THE VICTORIAN VAMPIRE is totally amusing! Picture vampire Albert killing thieves, stealing their money and feeding the thieves to his pet pigs in the backyard! The characters that Albert meets along with Albert himself make this a very enjoyable listen. Paul Hilliar does an outstanding job on the characters,as well as making THE VICTORIAN VAMPIRE very enjoyable listen. Nick James, the author has what I hope to be the first in a long line of Albert's adventures.
I recieved this audiobook free in exchange for an honest review.
Okay so this book starts out not too bad and it just never gets better from there. I only finished reading it because I needed an almost filler like book to keep me occupied when I was taking a break during my move to a different city. It was a short read and was able to get it on KU. What disappointed me the most was the grammar and spelling as this is the first time I have ever encountered this many spelling errors in a kindle book. I also couldnt stand how bland and empty the characters were. I know the main character started off as a 20 year old but towards the end of this book he was over 150 years old but had not shown any real significant characther growth since. I felt like the author could have done such a better job with the characters and done so much more. Their personalities *could* have made this a 4 star novel. Also at times the POV would change to another character and it was hard to tell. The ambiance was nice though.
I am a longtime lover of the vampire genre, having read "Dracula" over 50 years ago (I know, I'm old!). So, I'm always on the lookout for something new and different (and that doesn't sparkle!).
Albert Morris is a young man in Victorian England who wants more than to go into business with his father. First, he joins the Army for adventure, but only goes as far as Ireland. One night while wandering the streets of London, he hears a woman's screams and goes to help. He soon finds himself being bitten by a man and his life is forever changed!
The book follows Albert through his immortal life, from Victorian England to modern NYC. Along the way, he marries the love of his life and has numerous flings with other (human) women. Once he is settled in NYC, he learns that there are more of his kind who don't like his dalliances with the food. The Coven wants him to join them and stop his interaction with humans, but Albert has other ideas.
The book is full of action and a bit of gore along with historical facts. At times, this reminded me of Forrest Gump with the mentions of historical figures sprinkled throughout the book. The author has mixed in enough humor to give the reader some nice chuckles and the characters are great.
The narrator did a great job and his voices and performance added a lot to my listening enjoyment. If you are a fan of the vampire genre and are looking for something different, I recommend this book.
Overall: 5 of 5 stars Performance: 5 of 5 stars Story: 5 of 5 stars Reviewed: 08-01-22
Albert tried to do the right thing, he really did, unfortunately he got bit in the neck for his trouble, setting off a chain of events that no one could have imagined! “The Victorian Vampire” is a thrilling account of Albert’s trials and tribulations as he comes to terms with his new reality, Completely enthralling, a bit horrifying and somewhat macabre in all the BEST possible ways, the writing is fantastic, the dialogue smooth and the characters, WOW the characters, some history based with liberal editorial license, and some totally of the authors imagination, ALL beautifully developed and running the full spectrum of likability! No spoilers, As much as I would love to mention a few of my favorites, I don’t dare as that might be giving away too much of this ingeniously creative and totally unique plot! The narration was excellent, keeping me engaged in this magnificent story. All accents (and there were several) were spot on, and the vocal intonations were emotionally appropriate throughout. I throughly enjoyed listening to this one! Five fabulous stars!
What an charming and enchanting vampire story! I loved following Albert through his life. He has such the great attitude which is not what I was expecting. The characters we meet are lively, lovely and some dangerous.
I did not love this like I have this authors other stories but in no way is that a bad thing. I just missed the humor. This is a more straightforward story with little hidden agenda. It is pleasing to listen to as the narrator did a wonderful job. This was my first time listening to Paul Hilliar and I could easily listen to him again.
I was given a copy of this book for a honest review. *** Poor Albert or Berty as his friends called him was born in the late 1800's and after he was turned this book revolves around how he learned and adapted to becoming a Vamp and the friends he made along the way. It was both funny and heartbreaking at times but never boring!! I was lucky to be given a copy of this book but I would highly recommend it!! I hope that Berty gets more books!!!
I'm a big fan of vampires, witches, werewolves etc and I'd just finished the time tourist book so wanted to see what else he had written. Well I wasn't disappointed, great story with some brilliant characters and humour that's right up my street. Thoroughly enjoyed the book and now I'm on to his zombie book. If you want something to while away a few enjoyable hours with, this will fit the bill
What I liked more than anything else is that it started from the Victorian era. I love a good old vampire story. I loved how it evolved into modern day. It was full of adventure and covered most of the curiosities one would have about vampires. It however would have been nice for the writer to give us a little detail in how can these vampires eat and drink albeit not a lot. But it was a good story.
Who ever thought that a Vampire could live and work (sort of) amongst humanity, helping people in astonishing ways! A great story that's hard to put down and has a couple of cracking twists! Just downloaded Nick's next book, another journey through the darker side of life...
I got fed up with this book, lost all motivation with it. it was a case of repeat live repeat, maybe live is the wrong word, was interesting and engaging during the Victoria Era without giving to much away. After that I had to put it down & stop reading, I usually like this kind of gothic fiction, but the vampire is too super herois (main character) & not my cup of tea in the end up.

I didn't care for this novel. The main character was ok, but the author's focus needed to be more narrow. It felt like the author lacked direction. He had a vampire novel, but he had no idea where he wanted to take it, so he just decided to wing it.
I really enjoyed this book and cared for the characters. I think it would have been interesting to explore the Victorian years more and the ending was rather abrupt but otherwise a good read.
This was a great read. I enjoyed the story and the interesting travel through time. I had. Lot of laughs and a few tears. You’ll love the cast of characters!
