Inheritance #7

Sigils of Spring

Rate this book
We all fall down. When Quentin is accosted on the street by YouTube ghost-hunters with a crackpot theory about his mother, he writes it off as nonsense -- until they kidnap him right off the street in broad daylight. Not even his psychokinesis can save him, but Laurence will. He must.

Except Laurence can't find Quentin. His powers have never failed him like this before. There's only one hope left: a stranger called Angela is willing to teach him more magic than he currently knows. Normally he'd write her off as bad news, but Quentin is running out of time, and Laurence is all out of options.

He has less than 48 hours to save Quentin's life, and no price is too high.

The clock is ticking.

Sigils of Spring is the seventh book in the award-winning new adult series where X-Men meets October Daye.

You know there’s a problem when the smartest character around is a bird.

I don’t know if it’s me or the book, but I became increasingly less tolerant of the stupid choices the characters made. Laurence has never been the brightest guy around and thinking before acting will never be his strong suit, but in this book I don’t know what was worse,
I really don’t get how his brain works at this point.
Although I’m getting the feeling that the author is planning on “redeeming” Freddy and making him one of the good guys. Since the task is difficult (or impossible, imo), the author seems to be forcing the other characters in that direction by acting stupid and trusting him without any reason, instead of making me believe that Freddy’s character is redeemable in any realistic way. I may be wrong, but Laurence’s choices still don’t make any sense.
Not that Quentin is far behind, with all that nonsense

Speaking of other characters and the plot, they didn’t make much sense either. The general idea wasn’t bad, but there were too many points where things were clearly forced just to move the plot in the direction the author wanted, like when

There were things I liked () that were all good, but most of the book was a mix of good ideas poorly executed. I didn’t hate it and it was really fun to comment about how stupid the characters were with my fellow buddy readers, Linda and Rosa, but if this is what I can expect from the rest of the “season,” I would’ve preferred the series to end with the fifth book.

Wow, was this ever a letdown. I initially thought I'd give this 2.5 stars, but as I thought about it over the course of the day, it slipped down to 2 stars, and now that I've finished my review, it's slipped again. There just aren't enough positives to outweigh the negatives, and a couple of those negatives are pretty huge nopes for me.

Maybe the year and a half since the last book had something to do with it, but things that didn't bother me too much before bothered me a lot more now. And the writing is just not up to par with the previous books. The characters are inconsistent, the story structure is sloppy, the plotline is a dumpster fire of epic fail (so much potential wasted), and nearly everyone in this story is TSTL.

Things I liked:

1) Windsor. So funny and easily the smartest one in the room. The fact that he's a one-year old raven familiar should tell you something.
2) Rufus. Telling it like it is and putting Laurence in his place, finally. Not that it did him any good, because Laurence is Laurence.
3) Rodger. I don't remember him from previous books but apparently he works in the florist shop and has quite a lot to say about the goings on there over the past year.
4) Traumatized characters getting therapy.
5) Characters not being able to rely on their powers or gifts to get out of trouble. Which leads me to...

Things I didn't like:

1) Characters having to rely on their wits instead of their powers. Would be better if they actually had some wits. Well, turns out Quentin did. Laurence will never win a Nobel Prize though. Maybe a Darwin Award.
2) Laurence trusting Freddy when Freddy's done absolute squat to deserve another chance. And by the way, did Laurence make those anti-mindrape talismans for everyone else in the house and his life? Because he really should if he hasn't.
3) Quentin's martyrdom complex. It's gotten out of hand when he Compassion is all well and good, but not when it turns you into a moron.
4) Too many characters. The author makes zero attempts to reintroduce any of them. The main characters were fine, I mostly remembered them. But all the secondary characters were just names on a page. At one point, a character walks into Jack in the Green, talks to Laurence and Ethan about something insignificant and walks back out. Why did I just spend a page on this character and conversation when it didn't mean anything to the story in any way, shape or form, and I had no idea who it even was? And then there's all these kids in the house. How many of them are there? Five? Ten? Fifteen? Names kept being added at random. Why are there so many of them when the majority of them don't even contribute anything to the story beyond a line or two? It's stuffy and jumbled. I couldn't even remember which ones were the dogs until one of them started licking Laurence's fingers!
5) Laurence is completely self-centered and selfish (except when it comes to Quentin) and while he's always been a little like this, it seemed like it was ramped up to 11 here. He makes decisions that'll impact other characters without consulting them and avoids fulfilling obligations because they're an inconvenience to him, and thus uses anyone and everyone around him to his benefit as a result.
6) Plot holes you can drive a tank through. I liked the idea of the plot a lot, and for awhile, it was actually going well and holding my interest. But it became apparent that the author painted her "heroes" into a corner and the only way she could get them out of it was turning her super competent villains into dithering idiots. Ok, I need to stop now, or this'll go on forever. I didn't even get to the various plot threads that were introduced and then left unresolved. I guess this is still the start of the "season" so these threads can still be picked up later.
7) Putting "the" in front of street names. What was that about? It drove me up a wall even before the crappy conclusion. And American cars have hoods, not bonnets.
8) The D/s between Quentin and Laurence. I had a theory that So on top of just not liking that dynamic, it makes no sense in the context of this relationship or these characters. At least the sex was kept off-page, so I was spared having to actually read beyond the setup.

I wasn't expecting this, since the other books were so good, among some of my favorites actually. But this was a mess in both characterization and plotting. Characters did things because the author needed them to, not because it was plausible or believable. In a series like this, I love being able to theorize about what's going to happen next, especially with the epilogues that tease at the next book. But when it feels like things are being made up out of thin air as they're convenient to the plot, I lose interest in doing that. Maybe this was an attempt to subvert expectations or maybe these were supposed to be plot twists, but they're not based on anything within the context of the story or series.

I guess every series is going to have a bad apple in the bunch, but the next one will need to be a vast improvement to renew my interest.

And thanks to Rosa and Elena for the awesome BR. I couldn't have gotten through this without them.

Good. Consistent with the previous books in the series.

Because it’s been a while since the last book was released, I reread it before this one, and it stood up to rereading well.

This is a good continuation of the series. Faulkner should consider a dramatis personae list at the end or the beginning of the book though - who is Ethan again?

Another great book!

With the last book and now this one, it feels like the series has maybe drifted a bit in terms of plot? It’s been a lot of wild situations happening to the characters that they then had to respond to.

But it was still a good story about characters I really like and feel invested in, which is the most important thing to me. And I love how the author is still taking all the trauma the characters go through very seriously. And of course I love the relationship, the magic, the telekinesis, and everything else that I’ve been enjoying this whole time.

Seven books in, sometimes there’s not much to say that I haven’t already said, so that’s all I’ve got this time. But I am enjoying this series!

Where is the next one? I'm glad I'm buddy reading this with Linda and Ele, I need to comment! At first this was a bit slow, but once the action picked up, I couldn't put it down.

🤔

I didn’t like this one as much. It didn’t have the natural flow. I love the series but it seems like it’s gonna diverge from the original nature mythology stuff and I’m not sure how I feel about it. I don’t like that Laurence hasn’t helped Rufus at all yet. That seems wrong. I don’t like the new evil guy and I’m afraid it’s gonna turn out to be Quentin’s little brother which would really suck.

I read some reviews before I read this book and that was bad. I was worried about what was gonna happen through the whole book.

This series is SO good, but this installment just wasn't quite as delightful, compelling & exciting as the other books are. There are sort of tongue-in-cheek references to how a kidnapping isn't quite as high stakes as some of the other dangerous situations Quentin & Lawrence have been in, but truly, it just really wasn't as interesting to read for that exact reason.

I was actually so interested in the witch hunters as a new part of the Inheritance world, but I didn't feel like I got enough of their or Katharine's history, even with the prologue. So hopefully that comes back at some point. Similarly, we get the introduction of Angela, but not a whole lot of fleshing out of her character. This just left me wanting more, and not necessarily in a good way. However, all that being said, this has no bearing on whether or not I'm going to continue reading the series because I absolutely am!

Such a disappointment!

I like this series a lot, so having this book with a plot with so many holes and with the characters acting senselessly was a huge letdown.

And I'm going to put all under a spoiler tag because I need to vent and there WILL be spoilers.

So, in short, I really hope that the next book will go back to consistent characters and good plots, because this? this was seriously mediocre.

Not the usual Quentin/Laurence magic and mayhem but an engaging character exploration in the context of fighting (possibly?) earthbound baddies who push all the buttons.

I found the first half of this slow-going - to the point I almost set the book aside to read something else (and wondered briefly if I was done with Inheritance), but I'm glad I didn't. The second half is action-packed and does not resolve the way I anticipated.

This is still my favourite series and Laurence & Quentin live rent-free in my head, obviously.
But this book was dark. I feel like it was the most depressing one of the whole series so far. Which isn't a bad thing, but I need some time to process the events and how they just feel SO MUCH. I love when a book does that.

Very intriguing

I couldn't put it down until I finished reading the complete book. I am now curious as well about Quentin and how he will manage all of the things that keep happening to him.Hope this comes out on audible soon. Do so love listening to the boys voices.

While having really enjoyed the series thus far, I
am afraid it's becoming rather repetitious with barely any progress with the story line or the characters further development. Still the same unanswered questions. I'm about to move on without any more answers. Pity.

Another stellar entry in a stellar series. God, I love these books more than words. The writing is lush, the world building is gorgeous and just keeps going, and the characters are easy to identify with. if, like me, you have very limited funds for books, spend them on these books.
