Yesterday I did something I rarely ever do and called in sick to work. At first, I was hopeful I had finally achieved my goal . . . .
But it turns out it is either sinus or inner-ear driven and not something I can spread around the office to all of my unsuspecting co-workers. It did, however, make me super pukey, effed my balance up pretty efficiently and made it nearly impossible for me to read during my eight hours of freedom. I know what you’re thinking . . . .
Samesies. I also had already blown through all of my various Househos on the DVR so I commenced with a marathon of Love It Or List It and dug out a stack of freebie cookbooks I’ve been acquiring for the past couple of months and failing to ever peruse or review.
Let’s start with the title of this one. Oh Lord, there would be so many complaints. Trust me . . . .
A more appropriate name for this might be the “Comfort Food Family Cookbook” because it had every single thing I want to eat when I need to turn my frown upside down and while I agree this was pretty comprehensive when it comes to nutritional value and did offer some alternatives when possible, zero effs were given when it came to only providing recipes free of gluten/carbs/dairy/meat/everything else that I find delicious.
I am a total cookbook hoarder (complete with one of those rolling carts everyone was buying a while ago located in a prominent position in my kitchen) and I’m giving this 5 Stars because I will use it over and over again. I love the idea of recipes for everything from Sunday pot roast to beef and broccoli all being conveniently located in one book.
And to prove that I’m not just a hoarder, but actually a real June Cleaver who also cooks dinner for the fam the majority of the time, here was last night’s selection:

A cookbook for the everyday cook. Filled with healthy comfort food that is flavorable. Printed in a nice size book with good quality paper. Nice colorful pictures of some of the recipes. Chapters broken down into themes (15-minute prep, 30 minutes or less, 4 ingredients, One Pot or Skillet, Slow Cooker). Easy to follow directions. Recipes use basic ingredients/easy to find ingredients. I’ve found quite a few recipes to try.
This book is awesome! The recipes are appealing everyday kinds of dishes that will please the whole family. There are nut-free, gluten-free, and vegetarian options, so you have a lot of options. I will work some of these into my rotation for sure.
I have an active preschooler and a hubby who works till dinner time, so it's hard for me to find time to do a lot of meal prep or fancy cooking. I often find myself reaching for frozen or boxed foods that I can whip up quickly. This book is great because it gives me some ideas for easy meals that are ready in 30 minutes or less, one pot/skillet meals, slow cooker meals, and more! I tabbed so many recipes in this book that sound yummy - there are multicolor flags literally all up and down the side of my book. Sheet pan steak fajitas, baked chicken fried rice, turkey bolognese... So many I can't wait to try! There is some good info at the front of the book about time-saving tips, suggested kitchen tools and pantry staples, and even a conversion chart for making slow cooker meals in your oven if you don't have a slow cooker. I wish there were more pictures, as I have a hard time envisioning what the finished product will look like by just reading a recipe alone, but otherwise I think this is a great addition to my cookbook collection and I know I'll be reaching for it on many a weeknight.

With simple and quick recipes that the whole family will love, this cookbook makes it easy to eat healthy meals every day! There are simple recipes that have only 5 ingredients, quick recipes with only 15 minutes of prep time, and recipes to cook in one pot.
This book begins with some "Time-Saving Tips" and "Tips for Raising Adventurous Eaters" to get your children involved in choosing and preparing healthy meals, and gives many family-friendly recipes that are simple enough for kids to help with the cooking.
In case you don't own a slow-cooker, there are also substitute cooking times for slow-cooker recipes using the oven or stove top instead. There are instructions for storing left-overs, as well as a list of pantry staples to keep on hand for multiple recipes.
Each recipe is labeled with helpful information like whether or not it is gluten-free, nut-free, dairy-free, vegan, or vegetarian. There are also some ingredient substitution tips for many of the recipes in case you don't have all the right ingredients in your pantry.
The recipes are imaginative and fresh takes on classics like the burger, pizza, or tacos, with a little more veggies and a lot more flavor! I really appreciate that the recipes use common ingredients that are easy to find at any grocery store. Each recipe has just a little bit of a twist to make it healthier and more satisfying.
I can't wait to try some of these recipes! The Avocado Chicken Burgers look delicious, and I really want to try the Maple-Glazed Salmon.

The concept "Family Dinner" has always meant so much more than sitting at a table and eating a meal. It's not just a meal eaten together, it's a time to communicate, relax, and refresh--good times. "The Healthy Family Cookbook: 100 Fast and Easy Recipes for the Whole Family" is designed to make meal prep and cooking simpler and less stressful and to infuse family meals with enjoyment. Author Brittany Poulson, a registered dietitian nutritionist and certified diabetes educator, has put together a collection of 100 recipes that are organized by cooking method, indicate special-diet suitability, and provide complete nutritional breakdowns. She also discusses why healthy family meals are important, how to make meals healthy. easy, and family-friendly, and offers tips on kitchen equipment, time-saving, pantry staples, and making the most of "scraps". Here are some of the delicious dishes that will be sure to please the entire family: "Sheet Pan Steak Fajitas"; "One-Pan Hawaiian Chicken"; "Tex-Mex Casserole"; "Breakfast-for-Dinner Casserole Casserole"; "Beef and Broccoli Lo Mein"; "Fish Tacos with Colorful Coleslaw"; "Tangy Orange Chicken Stir-Fry"; "Lemony Shrimp Pasta"; "Tortellini with Shrimp and Spring Peas"; "Chicken Pot Pie"; "The Ultimate Meat Loaf and Potatoes Dinner"; and "Loaded Potato Soup".
“It (this cookbook) isn’t for professional chefs, but rather,
for everyday cooks who want to be proud of what
they’re putting on the table for their family.”
-Brittany Poulson, Introduction, page x
Healthy Family Cookbook by Brittany Poulson is a cooking reference for those interested in cooking healthy meals. Chapter 1 brings tips for adventurous eaters, pantry staples, and kitchen equipment. Chapters 2 through 6 are easy go-to recipes titled 15-Minute Prep, 30 Minutes or less, 5 Ingredients, One Pot or Skillet, and Slow Cooker.
This is a good family cookbook that enhances the reduction of prep and cooking times and will be a great addition to any home cookbook shelf.
Recipes ready for my testing that caught my eye are Avocado Bean Burritos, Avocado Chicken Burgers with Sweet Potato Coins, and Pork Chops and Potatoes with Creamy Dijon-Spinach Sauce.
I prepared the Pork Chops and Potatoes recipe that has excellent flavor and a smooth and creamy sauce. The Dijon mustard and parmesan cheese made the sauce absolutely delightful.
I recommend all home chefs to add this book to their cookbook collection after testing just one recipe. I do not think you will be disappointed in the least.
I received this book from Callisto Publishers in exchange for an honest review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission Guidelines.
After the introductory chapter you will find recipes in the following categories: 15 Minute Prep * 30 Minutes or Less * 5 Ingredients * One Pot or Skillet * Slow Cooker
Author state her recipes aren't "for professional chefs but, rather, for everyday cooks who want to be proud of what they're putting on their table for their family". Did you know that the best vegetables to use for stock are onions, carrots, celery, mushrooms, leeks and parsnips? Save all your scraps (bits you cut off) and store them in the freezer until you have a bagful.
WARNING: Serving sizes are small - great for little kids but not for teenagers. You will likely need to double some of these recipes. For example, how many of your kids or adults only eat one burrito?! On the plus side there are a good variety of recipes included with plenty of vegetarian options. PLEASE NOTE that this book contains only main meals, no desserts. Whilst this is not a recipe book I will be keeping (donating it to our library), I can see it being VERY useful to some families, especially those who want to change the way they are eating and spend more time cooking at home and enjoying REAL food.
I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher. Thanks, Liz

My actual, non-GoodReads rating: 3 1/2 stars
Brittany Poulson has written an engaging cookbook with healthier versions of family-friendly recipes. There is a lot of variety so, while not all recipes will appeal to every family, there is something here for everyone.
The recipes are uncomplicated, easy to understand, and won't send you on a hunt for strange ingredients. The book is conveniently broken down with an eye to preparation: meals that take 15 minutes to prepare, meals that take 30 minutes or less, meals with 5 ingredients, meals that use only one pot or skillet, and meals made in a slow cooker. There were two useful sections that you don't often see in cookbooks: one that tells you how to convert slow cooker recipes to the stovetop or oven and another giving storage tips to help groceries last longer.
I bumped my actual rating down from 4 to 3 1/2 because, as I mentioned earlier, the range of recipes is very wide (perhaps a little too wide) and there are a lot of recipes that my family just won't eat. My kids are not going to be okay with butternut squash mac & cheese, salmon, or all-green pizza. But this is still a book I recommend for easy, family-friendly meals.
The book features 100 diverse MAIN MEAL recipes that are organized into themes or categories i.e. One Pot, 15-Minute, 5 Ingredient. (You won't find side dishes or desserts in this cookbook.) There are helpful dietary labels on each recipe like gluten free, vegetarian, dairy free and nut free. Most recipes would be easy to make (not complicated were you have to have special chef skills), and the ingredients are easy to find in any grocery store (an important point if you live in a small town and special ingredients would be hard to find). Helpful nutritional information is given for each recipe if you want to keep track of calories, carbs, fiber, fat, protein; there are helpful tips, and measurement conversions.
I was a little torn on how to rate this cookbook. Many of the recipes are delicious and easy to prepare. However, the sodium count is very high. I found I needed to modify all the recipes I have cooked. Normally I would say this isn't a big deal because I always do that because my husband has high blood pressure. But this is supposed to be a healthy recipe cookbook so I was a bit surprised.
Overall I decided to rate it based on how the recipes taste and ease of preparation than I lowered my rating One Star Due to Sodium Content.
BUT if you are looking for a book with low sodium recipes that don't need modifications you may want to pass.

Thank you Callisto Publisher's Club and Rockridge Press for this free cookbook. The following review contains my honest opinions. I have really enjoyed this cookbook! I like the cover design and the images throughout the book. It is divided by how long the meals take to prepare and/or cook and progresses from simply recipes to more complex recipes, which are very helpful references for a busy mom. Various tips throughout the book can save time or take the meal just one step further which I enjoy. There are also tips peppered throughout the book on how to modify the dishes for picky eaters, making it possible to serve one meal to the entire family. I highly recommend this cookbook!
Our family is little, meaning that it is only hubby and me. That said, the Healthy Family Cookbook is a cookbook that is for anyone to use. Delicious sounding and easy to follow. My hubby is always my guinea pig if you will, always eager to eat what I make and he says that it is not very ofter that I make a bad meal. This book ensures that anyone with the lowest cooking skills can cook.
The recipes use healthy ingredients, family-friendly and for every diet. Recipes include a few different fish tacos, Mediterranean recipes, chicken and beef recipes. Some can be made in 15 minutes and others 30, 5 ingredient recipes one-pot and skillet recipes, slow cooker. To see any kind of recipe that you are looking for. I actually have a half dozen or so recipes. A very nice cookbook. I received this cookbook from the publisher for review purposes.
If you're looking for a simple resource for lots of quick, easy, and healthy recipes to make for your family, this would be my recommendation. Split into chapters for 15-minute, 30-minute, and 5-ingredient meals, along with slow cooker and one-pot recipes, there are one hundred new dishes included inside with lots of delicious color photos. There is basic nutritional information for each recipe and the instructions are easy to follow, making it easy to integrate these meals into your healthy-living regimen. I have several dozen recipes flagged and I cannot wait to try them. *Advance copy provided by the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
The first thing that caught my eye was the way that this cookbook was organized - 15 Minute Prep, 30 Minutes or Less, 5 Ingredients, One Pot or Skillet, and Slow Cooker. I also like the way that the index in sorted by ingredient. I am looking forward to trying the Mediterranean Salmon Bake with Spring Vegetables and the Hummus and Rotisserie Chicken Enchiladas. My critique would be that some of the recipes are not healthy options for anyone who is concerned with sodium levels.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher in return for an honest review.

I loved that this was full of fresh, healthy ingredients! It’s laid out in a wonderful way and was very easy to follow. Highly recommend for any family looking to enhance their dinner rotations!
