When a cyber terrorist targets the Amish town of Shipshewana, an Amish farmer and a seasoned agent join forces to stop the attack.
How do you defend yourself against an attack you can't see?
Nora Brooks has been sent to the small town of Shipshewana to stop a cyber-attack that could kill hundreds. She doesn't realize that she'll need an Amish farmer to do so. Ben Lapp is walking around the corner of his barn when he comes face to face with a woman dressed in black, bleeding from a wound on her right arm, and aiming a gun at him. When he learns why she's there, he wants to do more than stay out of her way. He wants to help her stop this threat to the community and the people that he loves. But the man who is threatening Ben’s community has faded into the night, and it’s going to take every bit of cunning and instinct these two possess to find and stop him.

This is the first of the new Cyber Division series, a series of novellas or short reads, where cyber crimes are investigated. Nora Brooks is a field agent working in the cyber crimes division working to neutralize cyber crime threats. She and her partner Tate have been sent to the small town of Shipshewana, Indiana, where a criminal has hacked the local government's system. It is becoming more and more prevalent where hackers get into the computer system of small cities and hold their information in ransom for a fee. Nora and Tate split up and intel sends Nora to the farm of an Amish man, Ben Lapp. Nora is shot with a minor injury before she can get a drop on the person known as Dash. Nora and Ben work together along with other Amish people to try to find this person who should stand out in a small community where everyone knows each other. This is a quick and intense, action packed fifty plus pages and a great start to the series.
This is a novella length story that first appeared in the Summer of Suspense collection. It's a short and fast read that is action packed from start to finish. You will be sure to read it in one sitting as you will be rooting for the bad guy to be caught but how can we protect ourselves against cyber terror? It's an attack that can't be seen and Amish area Shipshewana is the perfect area for the attacker to blend in. Small town America is the perfect area, nothing bad ever happens here right? This is the first book in the Cyber Division series. Check out the continuing story with Midnight Strike, book 2 in Vannetta Chapman’s Cyber Division series. Expected publication: December 9th 2019 I was given a complimentary copy. Thank you. All opinions expressed are my own.
Ben, a young Amish unmarried farmer is finishing the barn chores. As he is heading back to the house, he is suddenly confronted by a woman in black holding a gun. She thinks he is an extremist that is planning on planting a bomb in the peaceful community. It takes a bit before Ben is able to convince her that he is just what he is, an Amish farmer. I did get a chuckle from the “udders” of the cow part, cows have 4 teats, but only one udder. Quick read. although I really like Vanetta’s pure Amish books, I couldn’t really get into this one. It was novella size and a complete story but felt a little rushed. That being said it was a good story, just not quite what I was expecting.
With its intriguing plot and novella length, Fading Into the Night is a quick way to dive into some suspense and danger! Ben and Nora are characters that the reader gets to know just enough about to be interested in whether they can follow the clues and stop a terrorist before it is too late. I liked the setting and seeing both Amish and Englisch working together. I enjoyed this quick read and look forward to the next novella in this series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Fading into the Night initially appeared in the Summer of Suspense Collection. This novella is a fast paced and quick read that kept me spellbound to see if Nora and Ben were going to be successful in capturing the cyber attacker. Shipshewana was the ideal place for his next attack with the lack of technology in this Amish community. The dramatic action and threats were realistic with cyber attacks happening in our society today. Nora and Ben made a wonderful team with their visit to the Bishop playing a role. This is the first book of Chapman’s Cyber Division series. I look forward to reading book two, Midnight Strike that will be releasing December 2019.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was under no obligation to post a positive review but have expressed my own thoughts.
A really good short story, and as always dialogue and characters that will draw you into the the action and building relationships. Thank you, Ms. Chapman, for another entertaining afternoon .
Fading into the Night by Vannetta Chapman is the first book in the new Cyber Division series. It first appeared in Summer of Suspense. Fading into the Night is a short story at only fifty-five pages, but it is a captivating. I was instantly drawn into this suspenseful book. It is short but packed with action. I liked Nora who is a strong female agent who does not let a bullet wound stop her from completing her mission. Ben Lapp was the perfect counterpart for Nora. Shipshewana was the ideal spot for Dash to pick because the area does not have camera and most of the community lives without electricity. He can blend while he plots his latest attack. I appreciated the epilogue which nicely completed the story. Fading into the Night has suspense, mystery and action. I enjoyed this riveting tale and cannot wait to read Midnight Strike.
Vannetta Chapman has a commanding way of combining the everyday American or "Englisch" ways with the Amish ways of doing things. The development of characters is both refreshing and repeatable as being among those that have questioned their faith. Her explanation of faith is exactly what is needed in todays society. We need to take a step back from preaching and patronizing others and just love them as Jesus loved.
Lost one star due to a plot error. I've reported it and will change this to 5 stars when fixed. Can't believe it was not caught. Story is about cyber crime and is beautifully set in an Amish community.
Two strangers from different walks of life are brought together in an unusual way. Danger and intrigue fill their lives. Can faith and trust win? Great story. Quick read. I received a complimentary copy of the book. No review was required.
Having been to Shipshewana, the farms, the market with English and Amish people.. Quick mystery to enjoy with Ben stepping in to help her. Staying at his home overnight would be a definite no, without chaperones, or the kiss also would not happen.
A note before I begin this review: This novella first appeared in a collection of stories entitled “Summer of Suspense”. If you have that book, you have this story.
Vannetta Chapman writes amazing mystery/suspense stories. I also love her Amish books. This one combines both genres in a storyline that seems as if it could be right out of today’s headlines. This story has a “race against the clock” feel to it, and as I kept reading, I felt the tension grow all through the story. Although this book is shorter in length, it lacks nothing as far as plot or character development. Even reading it for a second time helped me pick up details that I missed the first time as I was reading quickly to get to the end of the story.
I also loved the characters of Ben and Nora. Ben’s an Amish farmer; Nora’s a seasoned Federal investigator. They come together in a most unexpected way in an unexpected place—the small Amish community of Shipshewana, Indiana. It will take the two of them working together to stop the beginning of a cyber plot that could affect thousands of people. Their differences in background adds much interest to the plot of this story.
I’m hoping that the author will bring these two characters together again in a another book. I loved this “Cyber Division” story.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Wow, the only fault I can find with this novella was that it wasn't a longer book! I really enjoyed the chemistry between Agent Nora Brooks and Amish farmer Ben Lapp. Though as different as night and day, they worked well together to pursue a dangerous cyber criminal nicknamed Dash. I liked that while it was sophisticated digital sleuthing that located his general location, it was common sense and neighborly networking that finally identified him. Nora and Ben both find a sense of purpose for themselves and their world in this satisfying read. A lot can happen in 24 hours!
Fading Into The Night ( Cyber Division Book #1 ) By: Vannetta Chapman I really loved this action, packed , suspenseful story. It is not your average Amish story. A Cyber terrorist is planning an attack on a city close by and Agent Nora is trying to stop the attack. She meets up with Ben , an Amish farmer. Can she talk him into helping her? Can the two of them stop the terrible attack ? I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This suspenseful story was first a part of an anthology called Summer of Suspense. Although a quick read, it held my interest and is book 1 of the Cyber Division Series. I really liked Ben, the Amish man, who discovers a woman agent ready to do him in! I love his character and hope that he will be in book 2!
The book moves quickly and there are no dull moments. I really enjoyed reading this!
I received a copy of this ebook from the author. All thoughts are my own.
This is the 1st book in this series that I have read.
The story is about Nora Brooks, a cyber security agent, who is assigned a case in Amish country that involves a terrorist named Dash. This story has Dash ransoming communites for money and if he doesn't receive payment a bomb will go off. Nora arrives and follows a digital trail to a farm where she is shot by Dash. The owner of the farm Ben Lapp comes out to milk his cow as he does every night. Nora believing he is Dash points her gun at him. Ben is later able to convince Nora he is not Dash.
Nora, working with Ben, begins the search and she gets help from a AAmish bishop. Nora eventually gets a lead and she knows that time is running out.
Discover how Ben and Nora were able to figure out the target of where the bomb was going to be exploded.
The ending will close the case for you. It is a definite read and I look forward to reading more in this series.
