Rate this book
Romance is bound to strike a chord when the young people of Bird-in-Hand join together to bring their community the gift of song. Hymn of Praise Sharon Lambert and Jay Smoker have been friends for a long time, but lately Jay has seen Sharon in a new light. They begin spending time together, and Sharon invites Jay to her family’s home to serve dinner and sing traditional hymns for their English guests. When Jay decides that this tramples upon his doctrinal beliefs, can these two dear friends compromise and find love? Or will Jay’s strict views keep them apart? Amazing Grace Dave Esh is broken with guilt after a recent tragedy. When Alice Blank, an acquaintance from school and youth group, invites him to join an informal singing group that performs for community members in need, Dave doubts he will enjoy himself—let alone find peace. Will Alice’s friendship help Dave learn how to forgive himself the way God already has? Great Is Thy Faithfulness Darlene Bender’s mother has been battling cancer, and Darlene can’t understand why God would allow someone so wonderful to go through such a terrible time. She finds strength in her singing group and friends, and when Andrew Detweiler senses that Darlene needs a confidant, he approaches and befriends her. As love blossoms between them, Darlene might soon realize that God was with her all along. O Holy Night Elaine Lantz and her parents have just moved to town from New Wilmington. After leaving behind some painful events and a group of deceitful friends, Elaine worries she’ll never be able to trust again. But the young people of Bird-in-Hand don’t give up, and Calvin King takes it upon himself to make Elaine feel welcome. Perhaps friendship and love await Elaine in her new hometown.

I discovered Amy's books over ten years ago while browsing at my local library.
As an avid reader of Amish fiction there where not nearly as many authors writing about the Amish lifestyle as there are today. Mainly we had to read Beverly Lewis and Wanda Brunstetter, not that I'm complaining as these are wonderful authors but it was refreshing to discover another Amish writing author when I found Amy's Kauffman Amish Bakery series which I devoured by the way.
I own almost all of Amy's books that have published since then including the novella collections but will admit I have not read her nonfiction or YA books.
Over the years I have watched her work strengthen and the plots become more realistic, the relationships romantic, fun and compassionate and I feel so inspired reading her books the encouragement is there. I highly recommend her books!

I have no idea how I missed the release of this book two years ago! It's unusual in that it's a collection of novellas written by the same author and I love the continuity that brought to the read. And what a great theme to centre stories around -- hymn singing!

Four sweet faith-inspiring love stories focused around a group of friends who share their joy of traditional songs with folks in need. And I love the way the author matched a hymn with the inspirational content of each story!

A wonderfully unique approach to a novella collection.

All of these stories were great! Each one was different, but had such a good message about second chances! I love that about Amy Clipston’s books. When you read her books you get a great story with a great message! This makes me want one more story to see what is in store for all of these characters.

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are mine alone.

Amy's books are so wonderful that I feel like I'm in the story with each of the characters.
I enjoyed each story in this book. There's a little something for everyone in this book.
This is definitely a can't put down book as most Amish books are.
I've been reading Amish stories for years and each book that I read keeps getting better and better.
This book didn't disappoint. This book will leave your heart feeling full and satisfied after reading each story!
I think the last story in this book is my favorite! I love how the community gives Elaine a helping hand. It's what I love about the Amish. They're there to give someone a helping hand whenever needed or even if it's just a listening ear. Most of all, I really really love their cooking! Some parts of this book made me drool over the meals they had.
I think the theme of this book is special because it shows the love, support. and friendships that are made here in the book. I especially like how the young people doesn't give up in each of these stories and they offer hope as well.
Amy does an excellent job in bringing joy to me as I read these 4 short stories.
My thanks for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

I loved the friend group, and how each friend got his or her own romance. I also really loved the hymns they sang - especially Great is Thy Faithfulness - and how they tied into each person’s story. Overall a sweet collection of novellas from Amy Clipston

An Amish Singing is a collection of four stories that all have the same theme: young Amish friends gathering together regularly to enjoy each other's company and sharing their love of music with others. Each story highlights one of Amy Clipston's favorite hymns as its basis and the emotions found in these stories resonate with all of us: pain, grief, fear, and guilt; feeling unworthy and unloved; learning to trust, and finally, the overwhelming joy that comes from forgiveness.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once said that music is the universal language and I believe this is especially true with religious hymns and gospel music. An Amish Singing is a beautiful acknowledgement of the power of sacred music in our lives and Clipston once again showcases her wonderful writing talent! I recommend this book to all who enjoy Amish fiction and Christian romance.

I'm a huge fan of novella collections, and I particularly enjoy the Amish-themed ones, such as this.

Music has always been a large part of my life, so I loved the music angle to this book and the stories. The traditional hymns mentioned were familiar to me, as they were ones I grew up singing.

Clipston has a way of making her readers feel a part of the story, and this book is no exception. The collection has themes of love, faith, friendship, and forgiveness. The young characters are brought together through music. The stories also remind the reader that God has a plan, as well as the importance of trusting and leaning on God in the good times and the bad. Each story focus on one key character in a group of friends, which ties the stories together. The setting for all of them is Bird-in-Hand, Pennsylvania. All four stories are quick, sweet, heartfelt reads.

Friends, yes this is a story of the love and companionship of Amish friends, they are there for one another in good and bad times.
New and old friends are welcome, and they do a giving type of singing. The giving that warms the souls of those in need, and this group is all about sharing.
We are given a gift of some sweet romance, and some paring up, and we journey with them as they find what is right before their eyes. The caring for their fellow community members is so beautiful, they sure knew how to brighten their day.
You can sit down and read one, but you probably won't stop with that, and before I knew it the last page was turned.

What a wonderful group of friends these young people are! It was so nice to get to know these 8 young adults better. I was fortunate to have a singing group of friends, but we didn't bless others with our gifts the way these young ones did.

What a wonderful gift this book was and while we're still digging out from under the pandemic, it gave me an idea for our church.

An Amish Singing by Amy Clipston contains four heartwarming Amish tales set in Bird-in-Hand, Pennsylvania. Hymn of Praise, Amazing Grace, Great is Thy Faithfulness, and O Holy Night are the four novellas. Love blossoms and faith is strengthened in these heartening stories.

Hymn of Praise has two longtime friends, Sharon Lambert and Jay Smoker discover that their feelings are changing. After Jay asks Sharon’s father permission to date, they begin spending time together. Then Jay learns that Sharon is singing hymns and their Amish traditional songs for her families’ English dinner guests. He is further astonished that Sharon has involved their friends. It goes against his beliefs and how Jay was taught by his grandfather. Can Jay and Sharon overcome this obstacle?

Amazing Grace has Dave Esh feeling alone and guilty after a tragic accident. He has isolated himself from his friends and, despite a number of invitations, refuses to join them. Dave had been planning on obtaining permission to date Alice prior to the incident. Alice Blank has been friends with Dave since they were kids. She misses her friend and wants to find a way to help Dave. She continues to invite him to sing with their group of friends to those in their community who are ill or who need cheer. Alice knows that Dave needs to forgive himself and find peace before they can pursue a relationship. Can Dave find a way to forgive himself?

Great is Thy Faithfulness has Darlene Bender and her family dealing with her mother’s cancer diagnose. Her mother refuses to allow anyone from the community to visit or help them. Darlene does not feel that she can burden her friends with her problems or her feelings. She misses spending time with her friends and singing. Andrew Detweiler can tell that Darlene needs someone to whom she can talk and share her troubles. He befriends Darlene and soon deeper feelings begin to bloom. Then Dave realizes something that could derail their relationship.

O Holy Night has Elaine Lantz and her parents the newest residents of Bird-in-Hand, Pennsylvania. This is a fresh start for Elaine. She is afraid of making new friends because Elaine is unsure if she can trust anyone again. Sharon, Alice, Darlene, Dave, Jay, Andrew, and Cal welcome Elaine to the community and invite her to join them. Cal is especially captivated by their community’s newest addition. But Elaine has built a wall around her heart and Cal needs to find a way to break it down. Will Elaine be able to embrace the friendship and love offered her?

An Amish Singing by Amy Clipston has a group of young people who are close friends and enjoy singing. There are good messages in these four novellas with the most important being that God has a plan and He knows what is best. We must trust Him. I thought these stories were well-written and engaging. I started reading Hymn of Praise and became engrossed. I quickly read all four of these charming Amish stories. Amy Clipston is a special storyteller. Her love of writing shines in each of her creations along with her love of God. I like how these characters sang for people who were ill and grieving. Their singing uplifted their audience. The sharing of the Amish hymns allowed this group to pass along their love of God and their faith with Englishers. My favorite message from these four novellas was how we need to lean on God in time of great need (illness, hardship, grief). He is there for us and He has a plan. We just need to be faithful. These stories will leave your heart feeling full and soul satisfied. An Amish Singing contains four uplifting novellas about family, friendship, forgiveness, and faith.

An Amish Singing by Amish author extraordinaire Amy Clipston is a wonderful collection of stories. Set in Pennsylvania Amish Country this set includes four inspiring tales. Each one is filled with love, friends, and faith.

I love the author’s writing style. It is inviting and grabs my attention. I was immediately invested in each of these novellas. Clipson’s smooth writing takes me to a culture that I don’t want to leave. She deftly explains values and customs of the Amish, and I learn so much from each of her books.

The author writes such interesting stories. These four were so good. I was captivated by each one of them. I loved the conflict in Hymn of Praise. Sharon and Jay were two relatable characters. In Amazing Grace we meet Dave and his friend Alice. Dave has withdrawn and is consumed with guilt. The next tale is Great is Thy Faithfulness. This is a story of family and illness. It is very real to life and touching, the last one is Oh, Holy Night. There is a new family in town, and everyone is very welcoming. The problem is that the daughter, Elaine, has been hurt and is not interested.

Life and spiritual lessons are presented in a manner that makes readers really think. Each story points to God and that He has a plan for our lives. The characters are endearing and made great book friends. I hated leaving them.

I highly recommend this endearing book. It is entertaining and enlightening. This would make a nice gift. I give it a 5 out of 5 star rating.

To a singer/musician, what better thing is there to write about than singing? All four of these couples were in very different situations, but they had two things in common. They could rely on the Lord and also their friends. Very well done!

A heartfelt collection of novellas about eight young people from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania who choose to share their faith and friendship through singing hymns!

Hymn of Praise
Sharon Lambert invites her close knit group of six friends to sing with her one Sunday to share with one of their congregation that needed a visit, thus beginning a tradition they decided to participate in more frequently. Sharon finds love and friendship with her friend Jay as the group continues their socializing and sharing of songs. When Sharon invites her friends to sing at a dinner where Englishers are served, she chooses a traditional hymn of praise to sing unknowingly offending her new boyfriend. Jay must decide for himself whether to believe that the singing of hymns is a form of sharing the gospel. Will his decision come too late to salvage his relationship with Sharon?

Amazing Grace
Dave Esh, a young man consumed with guilt over a horrific accident, is barely making the motions to live day to day. His plan to leave the community gets closer each day as he saves diligently thinking he can leave part of his guilt behind. Alice Blank invites him to join his old group of friends singing. Dave’s guilt does not allow him to participate in anything that might bring him a moment of peace. Alice decides she is not giving up on Dave so she puts her plan into action. Can Alice make Dave see that God forgives us even when we struggle to forgive ourselves?

Great is Thy Faithfulness
Darlene Bender resists singing with her friends as she struggles to balance a heavy workload at home and in their family store. Darlene’s mother’s battle with cancer is taking a toll on the entire family. As Darlene struggles with guilt at leaving her mom for any length of time, she also struggles with her faith as a result of the illness. As Darlene starts to spend a few evenings with her friends singing, her friend Andrew quietly works his way into her life and heart bringing an important understanding to her life.

O Holy Night
When Elaine Lantz struggles mightily with a difficult personal betrayal, her family moves to Lancaster County hoping for a fresh start for the entire family. On Elaine’s first church day, the singing group of young people introduce themselves and invites her along. Elaine, filled with apprehension as a result of her past situation, eventually joins the group a few times and finds herself drawn to Calvin King in spite of herself. Can Elaine learn to trust friendship again?

A delightful, easy read in which singing plays a role in each of these young couple’s lives! Enjoy this pleasant book consisting of four novellas each linked to the others. Perfect read for fall for those who enjoy Amish stories and contemporary Christian fiction!

I am a huge fan of Amy Clipston! I never read a book of hers but that I feel like I am "in the story". When I began the book, I guess I didn't read the description of the book because I didn't realize it was four short stories. So when the first story was done, I was kinda left hanging. From when I continued with the next story, it continued on into the lives of these friends. This book didn't fail me. From the beginning, I was drawn into the lives of this group of Amish friends in the community of Bird-in-Hand. Each story tells the story of one main character in the group of friends and their relationships with a special person and also the entire group of friends.

Sharon & Jay are the couple in the first story. They have to work through cultural and religious beliefs and overcome some obstacles to continue in their relationship. The singing group of friends begins in this story where Sharon's mom feeds English people & to defer questions about their way of life, Sharon begins a tradition of singing to and with the group of Englishers.

Dave & Alice are the couple in the second story. Dave has gone through a tremendous tragedy of losing a friend recently and basically tries to shut himself off from the rest of the friends. Through the singing group of friends, Alice draws Dave out of his depression and helps him find peace back into his life.

The third story continues with the group of friends and Darlene & Andrew are the couple highlighted in this story. Darlene's mom has been battling cancer which causes her to somewhat withdraw from the group of friends at times. Through her mom's battle, Darlene and Andrew become closer and he helps her to understand more of life's challenges.

In the last story, Elaine and her family moves to town. Elaine has left behind a group of friends who were not really the friends she thought they were and in that process, she has acquired some trust issues with people. She becomes a part of the group of friends and they (especially Calvin) help her to learn to love and trust people again ,

An Amish Singing is complied with four friends that sing together to share the gospel and what the plain life is to the English world. The friends gather at Sharon's house for dinner and singing. It gives the English a taste of the gospel and later in a meal setting they ask questions.

I enjoyed this concept and the stories of the four friends. Starting with Sharon's story, she is now in a relationship with Jay who loves to hear Sharon sing. She is full of grace and is kind. However, when he witnesses one of the singings, he wages a war within himself of the sacredness of the Amish hymns. This war hurts his relationship with Sharon and together they reconcile what love really means. One of the things about the Amish is that they do not share the gospel, their life displays the simplicity of the gospel. So I liked how sharing the gospel is about keeping it simple.

Each of the stories reflect life and the pursuit of love. The backdrop of each story is the singing and the friendships of these group of friends. Each story reminded me of the saying Be Kind everyone is fighting a hard battle. These battles were self-righteousness, shame, rejection, and fear and each was overcome by love. The simplicity of the gospel.

A special thank you to Zondervan Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

Beautiful stories filled with love and uniqueness of the Amish people. I've always been intrigued by the Amish singing and Amy Cliptson in these collection of stories brought life into it and made it all enjoyable in ways I've never read before.
I loved the sense of belonging and close knit families caring each other even when they are not related by blood. I loved how friendships turned into more. I loved reading how they protective they are of their culture and ways and how kind they are to non Amish people, in subtle ways sharing the love of Christ with them. It was admirable to read how eager they were of sharing the Gospel with others using Hymns and their traditional Amish songs.
Just reading about the dishes in this book makes one hungry! Lol

Amy Cliptson with ease and skill writes beautiful Amish stories filled with love, family and faith. Leaving a lot to imagination.

I recieved a copy of this book from Netgalley and this is my honest opinion.

The Amish have a love of music, and author Amy Clipston shows us that in her book, An Amish Singing. All four stories feature a group of young people from Bird-in-Hand, who love to sing for the enjoyment of others. I really liked that all four stories are about the same group of friends, each one focusing on a particular couple.

Clipston’s characters, and settings, are charming. I found myself fully immersed as I read these stories. Each one has a different set of circumstances that challenges faith, yet each person is drawn to God and how He works in their lives.

It was fun seeing how a couple of the families open their homes to Englishers through serving dinners. I myself have enjoyed such dinners and I encourage you to try it some time.

All in all, a really good book if you enjoy Amish fiction.

An Amish Singing, by Amy Clipston, is a delightful collection of four, interrelated novellas featuring stories of faith, family, friendship, and sweet romances. As close friends gather to share hymns of praise with others, relationships are nurtured, friendships are strengthened, and love is given an opportunity to bloom. With the message of a classic, beloved hymn adding a meaningful theme to each story, this book is relevant and uplifting.

With a natural flow from one novella to the next, the four special stories in this collection are linked together through the passage of time, the power of faith, and the bonds of friendship. Set in a small, Amish community over the course of several months, these four stories unfold, revealing a likable cast of characters who join together to bless their friends and neighbors by singing hymns of praise. In each of these stories, the characters build connections with each other as they overcome insecurities, misunderstandings, and doubts. The characters offer forgiveness, embrace new perspectives, and find more reasons to open their hearts to new dreams and unexpected blessings.

I truly enjoyed being in the charming, rural world depicted in this book. As I read each of the four stories in this collection, I was easily invested in the plot of each novella, and I quickly developed a genuine emotional connection to the characters within each story. Their struggles, successes, motivations, fears, and perseverance kept me interested and inspired from the first page to the last. An Amish Singing is an endearing book. Abounding with warmth and plenty of heart, this book is enjoyable and engaging. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

An Amish Singing is a beautiful collection of four stories written by author, Amy Clipston. Enjoy a trip to beautiful Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and learn more about a special group of friends in this book.
In the first novella, Hymn of Praise, Sharon Lambert and Jay Smoker have always hung out together with their group of friends. Lately though they both start thinking their friendship could blossom into something more. When a disagreement threatens to dissolve their relationship they continue to put their trust in God to help them through. A sweet story!
Can Dave Esh truly forgive himself for the tragedy that happened in the next novella, Amazing Grace? Can Alice Blank and her friends reach out to him and show him that he is forgiven and just needs to forgive himself before it is too late? This beautiful story will capture your heart from the very beginning!
In the third novella, Great Is Thy Faithfulness, Darlene Bender needs someone to talk to. She needs a special friend, one that she can open up to, or at least that is what Andrew Detweiler thinks. Darlene's mother has been battling cancer and chemo treatments and it has been hard for her entire family. When Andrew starts spending more time with Darlene, can their friendship develop into anything more? A story of forgiveness, hope and faith.
O Holy Night is a beautiful ending to this collection of short stories. Elaine Lantz has recently moved to Lancaster County with her family. She is very hesitant to pursue any friendships because of what has happened in the past. Calvin King continues to reach out to her and show her what friendship is all about.
I definitely recommend reading this collection of short stories! Once you start reading, you won't be putting this book down anytime soon!

In An Amish Singing, Amy Clipston brings a group of young people who have been friends for years. One Sunday, one of them suggests singing as a group for a church member who couldn't make it to church that day, and a tradition is born. They enjoy it so much that they also begin singing as a group when two of the mothers host English people for meals. As these seven young people work and sing together, hearts open to one another, and each one finds their life partner. (The eighth person shows up in the final story by moving into the community.)

I enjoyed each couple's story. Will Jay's strict adherence to his Amish beliefs keep him from seeing Sharon's heart behind singing for the English at her mother's meals? Can Amazing Grace bring Dave home, just like the song says? Or will a past mistake keep him lost in his grief and unable to make a commitment to Alice like his heart is telling him to do? As Darlene's faith takes a beating during her mother's chemo treatments, can Andrew be her strong shoulder, even when he believes her doubts are sinful? Can Elaine learn to trust another man when her last boyfriend cheated on her with her best friend? Can Calvin convince her that his friendship is worth taking that chance?

Readers who love Amish romance will not be disappointed with "An Amish Singing." Clipston's sweet, gentle romance takes each couple from "just friends" to "something more" in a way that seems completely natural. I like that each story was short enough to read in an evening, and that all of the characters remained the same throughout. I think you'll like this!

Amy Clipston is one of my all time favorite authors, and I truly adore each and everyone of her stories. She's become my top pick for Amish fiction stories, and I always look forward to her new releases. Unfortunately, I didn't notice this one was a novella collection before I started it, as I'm not always the biggest fan of these type of collections. However, I ended up being pleasantly surprised by just how much I enjoyed this one, and I will definitely be recommending it.

I think one thing that made this one work for me is that while it is four individual stories, each story revolves around the same group of young people that's introduced at the start, with the exception of one character. While a certain couple takes the center stage of each individual story, most of the characters put in appearances in each and every story, and I thought that this helped strengthen the plot of each short novella. I thought it was an interesting idea to have the whole collection focus around the friends singing to help spread the word of God, and I thought this was represented beautifully throughout each of the four separate stories. It's always refreshing to read about people who are eager to share the Gospel with others, and that was definitely one of my favorite parts of this collection.

I've come to expect great things whenever I pick up a novel by this talented lady, and An Amish Singing was no exception. With how short of a word count each of these individual stories had, I ended up being quite impressed with how well developed each of the individual stories and corresponding romances were.
The reader can tell that Amy Clipston truly writes from the heart, and I loved the focus on friendship, first love, faith, grace and redemption. The kindness of the Amish culture is always something that I love getting to read about, and I enjoyed it even more with all the hurt and smallness that exists within our current world.

Final Rating: 4/5.

I truly adored this collection, and I already can't wait for Amy's next release.

Thanks so much to Zondervan for allowing me to read and review this!

I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary advance reader copy of this novel from the publisher (Zondervan) via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to give a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

An Amish Singing is Amy Clipston's newest anthology, and, like her others, it will not disappoint you. Each story centers around a group of friends who sing for people in their church community and as a way to share the gospel. The stories are also named after hymns, which is really great. As always, I enjoyed reading about the Amish youth in Bird in Hand. Each story was great, but my favorite was Great is Thy Faithfulness. That story centered around Darlene, whose mom has cancer. I found myself crying and rooting for her and her mom, as well as Andrew, who helped her as she struggled. My dad passed away to cancer and I could really relate to how Darlene felt. Clipston did a great job of showing the emotional toll that an illness like that takes. The other stories were also good! One centered on Jay and Sharon, who were getting to know each other, but found that they had differing views about sharing the gospel through song to outsiders. Another story was about Alice and Dave. Dave had suffered a great tragedy and Alice was determined to let him know how much she wanted to be there for him. The last story followed Cal and Elaine, who had to overcome some trust issues as she started to get to know him. As always, I have only good things to say about Amy Clipston's books. I have read every one of them to date and will continue to! I hope you get to check them out! Enjoy!
I freely offered my opinion on this story. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity!

An Amish Singing is a collection of four short stories by Amy Clipston. As with Ms. Clipston's other writings this is a heartwarming grouping of novellas set in Amish country. These wholesome, Christian stories speak of family values, faith and romance.

A Hymn of Praise is the first story in the book and features a friendship turning to a romance which is potentially threatened by perceived differences in faithful beliefs.

The second Novella, Amazing Grace, focuses on the internal struggles of a young man. Can he find a way to forgive himself and find his future, perhaps with a new friendship and maybe a bit more?

In Great is thy Faithfulness we meet a young Amish woman whose faith is being tested as she witnesses her mother's struggle with illness. Turning to her friends, and perhaps a new love, she may be able to find her path back to God after all.

Finally, in O Holy Night a young woman leaves behind a painful past when her family moves. Through this move she finds that true friendships and love still exists.

If you enjoy Amish/Christian fiction you will find this to be a great read.
