All my father wanted was to appease Clan Mackay. Maybe after he made a deal they would stop their raids and maintain the peace of the Laird’s lands and keep the promises they had broken again, and again. But what my father hadn’t bargained on was that Lachlann Mackay, the fearsome leader of the warlike clan at our doorstep, would want a bride in exchange for his peace.
A promise is a promise, and my sister will do her duty to our father, but when she disappears on her wedding day there is only one person who could take her place, but the last thing I want is to be tied to a filthy barbarian for the rest of my life. But if I do not—if I go against my father’s wishes and break the oath that was made, all of our lives are in danger.
Reader beware — “An Unwilling Bride” features lots of plaid, possible historical inaccuracies, a high-spirited heroine facing off against a sword-swinging alpha-hero worthy of some serious swooning, and a dastardly plot that could ruin everything. There is no cheating to be found here, and (by the trilogy's end) a Highland HEA is guaranteed.
Inside every history book is a heartthrob waiting to be discovered...

Avery Maitland writes in several different genres, but she keeps coming back to history.
She firmly believes that there is a heartthrob to be found in every history book, and she's determined to find the perfect one—no matter how many books it takes.
Bad!!! The h was sooo immature and annoying. She held stupidly that once her sister is found she can go back home. Being married and bedded didn't matter seem to matter.
🐱💋Cat MacCullach and her older sister, Morag💃💋, are as different as night and day in looks and personality. Cat🐈💋is her father's right hand, able to understand and do the work required on their large farm. Morag💃💋 is more suited to running the house and cooking.
When the MacKay clan burns🔥 their stable🐎🐎🐎 and runs off or steals many of their horses🐎 and sheep🐑, Alistair, the girls' father, decides they must go to the Laird, Nathan MacArthur, and demand justice!
The best way to bring the clans together and stop the infighting is to intermarry👰!
Morag💃💋 is chosen to marry the huge handsome Lachlan MacKay🐺🍆⛲🔪, who Cat🐈💋 recognized riding through her father's stable🐎🐎🐎 with a torch🔥!
ARC Received from Candid Book Reviews📚 I also got this ebook with KU.
Loved this fast paced and well written historical highlander🔪 romance💕. Author📚 Maitland has done her research. Her world building🌍 descriptions of life and politics back then are superb! The book ends in a cliffhanger.......which I really dislike, but this story is still well worth 📚reading and is a big step above average. The ADULT scenes are tastefully written.
First of all, I didn't realize this ended in a cliffhanger....aaarrgghhh! I usually stay away from those because I get too impatient waiting for the next book or else I forget what the first book was about if it's too long between releases! lol Oh well....
The story itself wasn't too bad but half the book was about Cat and her sister and Lachlann is mentioned in passing and we only get glimpses of him. I really would have liked to have seen more insight into Lachlann's character, as well as he and Cat having more to do with each other before they suddenly end up in bed! There just seemed to be no connection between them. The story is also written with only Cat's thoughts, not Lachlann's, and it frustrated me, wishing I could read his thoughts as well, it might have made him more part of the story.
I was given an ARC of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily giving an honest review.
I very much enjoyed this book right up until the final pages when I realized that despite this being in the blurb: "a Highland HEA is guaranteed." the darn book ends on a cliffhanger! To give the author her due, I really, very much, totally want to know what happens next so from that point of view, success! But it did lose that fifth star and nearly another one for that unexpected surprise.
The story itself is a real page-turner, lots of action, lots of intrigue, nice romance aspect, very strong cast of supporting characters. The MCs (especially Lachlann) were well written and complex. Cat... I'm still deciding if she's headstrong and independent or sometimes annoying, but there were times when I really liked her. The dialogue has just enough dialect in it to make you feel like you are reading a Highlander romance without so much it becomes difficult to follow.
I picked this up on Kindle Unlimited where it is available at the time of this review. I will be continuing on with the series and can recommend it to those who like historical romance with a bit of steam.
An Unwilling Bride: A Medieval Highland Romance is the first book in a series by Avery Maitland. It’s sold only in ebook format and strickly through Amazon. It has a cliffhanger ending. I know some readers hate cliffhanger endings, but if you know there’s one when you begin reading, it’s far less jarring.
This book was a quick read, a single afternoon, and exactly what one would expect in a highland romance. Managing expectations is key when reaching for this type of book. Never does the author attempt to elevate the story to something more than a trade book romance. And sometimes, that is exactly what a reader wants. Entertainment for entertainment’s sake. And that is why these types of romances have always been popular.
This book has just enough of dinnae, lass, aye, and ye in the dialogue to allow a reader to imagine the Scottish brogue without it overpowering the story. If you are an Outlander fan, then An Unwilling Bride will help satisfy your craving for all things Scottish.
The characters are predictable but well-drawn. The writing is solid and the story fast-paced. I wished the book had been longer, more detail given about the time and world. But again, that’s not the sort of book this is.
The only real negative I have to share has to do with Catriona’s character. She’s presented to the reader as being fiery and headstrong, quite the opposite of her older sister, Morag. But at times, Cat’s actions and reactions to events puts me in the mind of Maureen O’Hare in The Quiet Man. She’s constantly over-acting her part. There’s no subtlety to her character at all. After a while, her stubbornness becomes annoying. And because she refuses to accept her situation as Lachlann’s wife through the majority of the book, when the pivot in the story happens, it feels rushed.
That in itself is probably too much criticism for this book, but I can’t help but feel like the author sprinted to end of Cat and Lechlann’s story in order to set up the beginning framework for what will occur in book 2.
Will I jump into the next in this series? Perhaps, but only to follow up with Morag’s character whom I found much more appealing.
So here’s my humble opinion…if you searching for a little Highland romance with tartans, raids, and muscled men brandishing swords then An Unwilling Bride is a nice way to spend a cold winter’s day.
This historical romance was really well written, with few if any typos, well constructed sentences, and great pacing. This story took place entirely from the heroine's point of view, which is different from most of the modern romance novels I have read. The pacing and swift moving plot was one of this novel's great strengths, and the characterization of the heroine was vibrant and well done. This reader did not get much of a feel for the character of the hero, but that was mostly a function of the fact that we don't get any of his point of view in this installment. The one nasty surprise for this reader was that this is the first installment of a series that ends on a cliffhanger, and I did not realize that when I was reading this novel. As a general rule I won't read series that end on cliffhangers, and tend to avoid authors who make a habit of writing them because I want a Happy Ever After ending at the end of all my romance novels. Aside from that, The novel was exciting and well written. I recommend this story for historical romance fans who like cliffhanger endings. An all around good read.

Well not even halfway into this month into the new year and already discovered new to me authors such as this one. The delight of a reader is stepping into a romance that is centered back in day with it really taking you there as this one did. This also goes like a war clan story with one wanting something from the other and the real battle will begin. In this it is mainly from one of the characters point of view though but still enjoyable. Cat is a character to be reconned with but the sister kinda leaves her hanging I would say. What happens then is what will be at a bit of a fast pace with us along for the ride to see how this will turn out. Kinda miss the battle of the wills that could of been presented more in this but still a romance to capture a heart.
I had a hard time getting into An Unwilling Bride: A Medieval Highland Romance (Highlander’s Honor Book 1). I liked the relationship between Cat and Morag – they clearly needed to forge their close bond after their Mom died to survive their Father. He was a coward, selfish, and a bit cold hearted in my view.
At the halfway point of the book, I became more engaged. The story of Cat and Lachlann and how they finally come to a shaky relationship ripe with sexual pleasure is intriguing. I was a bit disappointed that this story was not a standalone and ended with a “To Be Continued”. I do however look forward to reading the next story in this series to see whether Morag is rescued and to see how Cat and Lachlann’s relationship progresses.
Despite the unexpected cliffhanger, the potential TSTL issue/moment right before the aforementioned evil cliffhanger, and that it doesn't make sense that Cat would want to return to her father after his callous betrayal, this was a terrific book full of great characters, even though some of them aren't worthy of actual love. Family duty, sisterly bonds, trust, intrigue, guilt, abandonment, and love are some of the underlying themes in this well written tale about the mysterious powers of love. I can't wait to read what happens next.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Strong willed, decided and ready to action Catriona MacCullach couldn’t understand how her father could betray his daughters and she was intended to fight the Mackays all the way. But Fate had mysterious ways and the heart was an accomplice. Liked Cat’s character and her inquisitive mind. Interesting Lackland ways. He was not as fierce with Cat as the Mackeys were portrayed. Intrigued with Morag and her expectations. What would she think after what happened to her? A story with feudal struggles, drama, amusing situations, violence, mysterious characters and heated passion. The mystery was not resolved so, the story continues in the second book.
Okay, Cat and Lachlan are hot (fanning my face). I mean like burn up the pages and melt your panties hot. And the chars of Cat is freaking awesome! She's strong, stubborn, and not afraid to draw a knife when the situation demands it. But she not just feisty, she's smart and witty too.
And Lachlan is so sexy it's unreal. He tends to get a bit too alpha here and there, but he's also sensitive. He hides his sensitivity beneath a gruff, stoic outer display, but it's still there. I loved this book, enough to read it twice and also read the remaining books in the series. I think you'll lose yourself in this book and thoroughly recommend it.
This really is a good story. I like both characters. Catriona is independent, brave, headstrong and her antics are hilarious. Lachlann is a fearless warrior with a soft side when it comes to her, he is so patient with her. I enjoyed reading this, it's full of drama, adventure and emotion, I was shocked and a little disappointed that it ends with unfinished business. I am captivated with their story and patiently await reading what comes next for these highlanders. I received a free copy without obligation and am voluntarily reviewing.
It's a great historic romance. Loved it all so far. And I actually can't wait for book 2, with what I read for a sneak peek at the end of the book. Characters are well written. Drama and adventure all great and go in tune with the book. The fighting between the mains was funny and cute. Cat can't believe what's happening to her home and what is to happen to her quiet, but very well liked life. Disrupted by the bloody Mackay's. The long standing fued may be coming to an end finally. Only it may have some consequences she may very well not like...
Oh no! “to be continued” are my least favorite words. This is a fast paced, well written story told from the perspective of Catriona, the daughter of a Highland clan chief. She is fiercely loyal, and kind of a tomboy, yet there is an innocence about her that is endearing. This is one of those stories where the scenes and characters are so well described that it is easily imaginable. I can hardly wait to read the next book and find out what happens.

I enjoyed this story though it does not end with this book. Catriona was a strong woman and a bit reckless. She was loyal to her family and did as was expected. Despite a rough beginning, she found her heart taken by Lachlann. He was reckless in his own way but took great pride in his family and their holdings, wanting better for all. Danger, kidnapping, with some fun and loving moments kept me turning pages.
I received a copy of this book through CBR Services, and this is my unsolicited review.
Of the two sisters, Cat is my favorite. She fiery and unrestrained. This book gave a glimpse of medieval politics and treaties. I had not really given thought about daughters being used as bartering goods. It seems like according to this book it could have been the norm. Granted, this is fiction. This was an entertaining read. spolier: Cat could have easily been broken but instead she was won. This book was given to me at no charge. All opinions are completely my own.
This was an awesome read that I thoroughly enjoyed and I highly recommend. The story and characters pulled me in from the beginning and I couldn't stop reading until I finished. If you love hot alpha males and the heroines they love with a hot and sexy romance then this book are for you. It's an awesome book and a definite must read for any fan and I can't wait to read more!!!

Aside from rampant apostrophe abuse (how can you write for a living if you don't understand the difference between plurals and possessives?!) I was able to get into this story... until I came crashing into the worst kind of cliffhanger.
This isn't a very long book and damned well should have included the ending. I despise this ploy to double the number of books sold and most emphatically NOT be paying to find out how this ends. Gah.
The first book in the Highlander's Honor series a well written story with a very good storyline the story flowed smoothly from page to page. This is Lachlann Mackay and Catriona/Cat MacCullach's story of a woman who ends up as a bride after her sister is kidnapped. I want to read the next book. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Writing is ok but the male characters could do with a bit more development. We have a good picture of Catriona and Morag’s father, but far too much time was spent on the main serving woman at the Argyll keep.
I am enjoying this story very much. The characters are vibrant and very vivid. The storyline is engaging and fast pasted. Book 1 does end on a cliff hanger so I am eager to start book 2.
