The Enemy Hypothesis

Rate this book
Abby Pena’s hands are full this year. Between school and helping her grandma wrangle her three younger sisters, there is no time for an after-school job, and certainly no money in the budget to get a car. When Brazos High announces a brand new school-wide contest, everyone thinks it sounds lame. Until they learn the winner of the contest gets a brand new car.

Mark Caputo is living a lie. His family owns a popular restaurant in town and their favorite pastime is being rich. Only… they’re not rich. His parents’ constant pressure to look the best and be the best has Mark on edge. This new car could give his parents some much needed financial help. Too bad he’s starting off this school contest in last place.

Abby and Mark have their own reasons for wanting the car, and so does the rest of the school. As tensions rise and students scramble to win the contest, Abby finds herself battling for first place with the last person she’d ever expect: the super cute Mark Caputo, her new mortal enemy.

I like how cute and wholesome this is .. the book is so simple with enough plot to make it enjoyable :)
This time we will follow Abbey, Jules friend who is in desperate need for a car, and Mark who is a student in the same high school who needs the cash from selling the car, their worlds collide when there is a new competition in the school about who is the better person, and the prize is a car.. so the two of them are head to head to win this competition and then sparks fly
I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for the third book :)

This is book two of the Brazos High Romance series and tells the story of Abby Pena and Mark Caputo. Abby is living with her Abuela and her three younger sisters, whilst her parents have gone down to Mexico, to look after her very sick parents. Abby is worn out as her Abuela is too easy going and her three sisters, aged 13, 11 and 8, walk all over her. Maria who is the oldest of the three went off to the mall with her friend and blew $200 dollars of the family budget her parents had sent their Abuela. Now they have literally nothing left for the rest of the month and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are all they can afford! She wants her parents to let her get a car, so she can gets away from the house occasionally, to do what she wants for once, and not have to be looking after her sisters all the time. But they can’t afford it! Mark is almost the complete opposite. He comes from a seemingly well off family, who own and run the family restaurant Caputo’s Italian Grill. His parents want to appear rich, to keep up appearances and ensure customers keep coming to their restaurants, but end up arguing about money all the time. They have leased a really expensive sports car for him to use, which makes all his high school pals jealous, but they don’t actually have the money to afford this really and are struggling for funds to get the roof fixed!

The high school announces a new app on bullying, that is a school wide competition and the winner after a month, will actually win a car worth up to $30,000! The app allows students, teachers and others connected with school life, can give kids either ‘kudos’ or ‘demerits’, which are differently weighted, to give more for kindness that isn’t faked or actions done without thinking and so on. The person with the most points at the end of the month, will win the car. What the students didn’t know, is that the teachers and others have already been giving or taking points off, for the previous two weeks. Everyone gets a shock when they find out their current position during that first session. Abby is in the top ten and everyone looks at her! She would love to win the car and get some freedom. Mark is sharing bottom space with many others! Everyone thinks Mark is wealthy, but as he puts it, he is living a lie, a fake wealthy status. He could do with winning the car and then selling it to help get funds for the repairs his parents need. He has been out of sorts since his gran died last year and hasn’t been as friendly and kind as he used to be as he adjusts to her absence.

The things that students try to do, from giving away services, food, babysitting, volunteering and so much more, really doesn’t have much to do with the anti-bullying message, the app was supposed to help combat. Everyone is being polite to everybody else and making nice comments on each other’s social media posts, all to ear kudos’. A somewhat fake and over the top set of actions, as each student scrambles to win the contest and win the car! Only problem is that is seems someone has figured out a way around the logarithm behind the app and it’s marking and giving of points. Abby and Mark end up as mortal enemies, as he tries to change his persona and gain as many points as possible. Abby is wearing herself out, doing freebies for one and all and even offering her free time after the competition ends. Mark is growing in his feelings for Abby, but she thinks he is some rich kid who has no need for this car and is just treating the competition as a joke. But his offer of proper Italian food from his parent’s restaurant for free, is one she can’t ignore. The end of the month’s competition can’t come soon enough and one of them let’s their eye come off the ball, just before the finish line and gets a shock! Enemies become friends and learn more about each other and the truth of what each other really are as people. A nice surprise at the end and the showing of a true friendship and love given without expectations. Another short and sweet teen love story. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Xx this book was pretty awesome, short but good!!!!!

Spoilers... not really. But maybe a few**

Okay, so I’ve been waiting on this book to come out. I forgot who Abby was since the author. Took a while to put this book out., I forgot how book one went lmao.

But with book two, I wasn’t disappointed at all. Especially when coming from a book that was so boring made my head hurt.

With this book, I thought Abby was mean to Mark. Though I understood why she acted the way she acted. She wasn’t sure if he was playing a joke on her when he kept asking her out. They both were competing against each other. In the competition. So that’s understandable. But you could tell that Mark didn’t want to win anymore, he wanted Abby to win more than he did.

He showed proof when he won when he told the people that he wanted to give his win to Abby. Before Abby learned what he did, I mean she was BIG MAD I doubt she would’ve congratulated him if he didn’t decide on Abby needed the win more than him. Clearly, she hated him for that win, but they worked things out once she realizes he wasn’t a jerk. And picked the Red Jeep that Abby wanted so that he could give it to her.

I thought it was cute of him to do that for him. Especially since he liked her and vise versa.

Besides, I can’t wait until the next book comes out. I am going to be looking out for “The Theory of the Boy Next Door,”.. especially learning who the girl and boy might be. I can’t even put my finger on who it might be at all.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This story was a fun, new one. It was a much different concept but worked well. The characters grew throughout the story. Mark became a relatively better person and Abby learned to make time for herself. The story was complete even if it was short. It had a background and an amazing plot. The entire story was devoid of bad language and mature scenes. It is a great story.

The story follows Abby and Mark. Their school has come up with this anti-bullying program where a student can get kudos for being kind. The prize for the first placer is a new car up to 30 grand. Abby is already in fourth place when the game starts because teachers had given kudos earlier. Mark is in the last place. Slowly Mark makes it up to the third place and Abby second. Mark genuinely likes Abby but Abby doubts his intentions. Will they be able to overcome their differences?\

This book was not for me.

The book finishes with "you are not at all what I expected". Same feeling I had when I finished this book.

It's called the enemy hypothesis, but there is not much rivalry here. And the romance it's practically non-existent. They suddenly start liking each other. And lots of things make no sense. Also, something that really bugged me was that there is a 30 days competition and it starts on a Monday. But somehow the 30th day is a Sunday? It should be a Tuesday...

Anyway, I was expecting a cute sweet read, but I basically got nothing.

Amy Sparling has done a terrific job with The Enemy Hypothesis. She made two very detailed characters in Abby and Mark. To be honest, Brazos High with their screens and tech everywhere was an interesting venue for the story. An app that let's you let people know how they are doing as human beings was a fascinating premise. I enjoyed Abby and Mark's banter and I liked that Amy Sparling brought Jules and Jake back as side characters in this novella. A little bit of familiarity. 5 stars. Highly recommend.

Sweet story

The story was pretty decent, just a couple of inconsistencies in it. The 2 most glaring were that our author had the H's grandpa dying last year but in chapter 4 forward it was his grandma, then the H from book 1 was Jake Johnson but all though this when referenced he was Jake Morgan.

It takes me out of the story and diminishes enjoyment.
This would have also been a 4* otherwise. The flow and style of writing were done very well.

I enjoyed this story a lot! I was really glad to get Abby's story. This is the second book in the series and we met Abby in the first one. This book stands alone. I loved the characters and watching them work through being competitors and getting to know each other as well. The characters pulled me in from beginning to end and held my attention the entire time. It is a shorter read and was a fun continuation of the series.

The premise of a contest that allows you to earn a car through good deeds is an encouraging one. I liked both Abby and Mark and the way they foreclosed and get to know one another as they compete. Another good story I this series. I think I would like to visit Brazos High School.

I've read several books written by Amy Sparling; she has done an excellent job at writing a good book; she is becoming one of my favorite authors. I can’t wait to read more of her books.

The story line caught my attention at the very beginning and kept me interested throughout the entire book.

I requested a copy of this book so I could provide an honest review. I liked this story though not as much as the first book. It had a similar high school theme. It had sweet lovable characters. It was entertaining and there were a few interesting ideas which were fun to think about. I just didn’t connect with their story as much as I thought I would.

Absolutely adorable. This book isn't necessarily a sequel so much as it includes characters from the previous book and takes place in the time school. This time we have a competition love story, which makes things hilarious and interesting.

This was a quick YA read with very likable main characters. The story was sweet and wholesome, as well as innocent and refreshing. I enjoyed this as much as I did Book 1.
