I wrote in my review of the last volume "The series as a whole does, however, capture the uncertainty and isolation of the high school years really well. Charming but slightly frustrating read," and things are much the same, if a little darker here. One of the main characters is dipping dangerously into codependent dysfunctional relationship territory and I'd really like to see her snap out of it soon in the next volume. Still worth reading but the characters' internal drama and the slightly dysfunctional relationship is starting to wear on me a bit.

Whether or not you read this as yuri (and I do think it is), Konatsu and Koyuki's relationship is starting to head into dangerous territory. One girl is trying to break out of her shell, but the other isn't sure that she's comfortable with that - because that means that she'll have to share the one person she's truly bonded with since her move. Co-dependency isn't healthy no matter what the relationship, and this could be the moment that shapes the girls' relationship going forward - whether they want it to or not.

The only thing that this volume made me feel was slightly irritated. I feel like the girls are so stuck in their heads that they don’t realize their issue(s) can be solved with a serious conversation.
I’m also more concerned with just how Konatsu and Koyuki’s relationship is impacting the both of them. It seems like things are looking much more codependent, rather than a friendship with some mutual pinning.

With Kaede and Koyuki getting closer, where does that leave Konatsu? Well, at a distance, as it turns out, both physically and emotionally. As the girls start to drift apart, neither of them is particularly happy, but sometimes the most obvious fixes are the hardest to pull off...

We won’t be putting this up as the feel-good book of the week, that’s for sure. I don’t know that I have read anything this downbeat in a while, as everybody just keeps making themselves more miserable. The art is on fire throughout, at least, illustrating the isolation and deepening distance, not to mention the general misery.

Konatsu, in particular, is going through the ringer this time out. By the time she sees Kaede and Koyuki palling around it’s way too late for Koyuki to maybe mention that fact to Konatsu. This whole section captures that awkward moment of ‘we’re best friends and now suddenly we aren’t’ that defines many a broken friendship to a tee.

And then it just keeps going. Kaede’s trying her best to actually bring our leads together, yet her efforts are almost making things worse because she’s kind of including Koyuki’s supposed best friend in this new little trio instead, which has to sting. Konatsu’s classroom scenes, especially when classes change, are all melancholy as heck.

For her part, Koyuki is just so guarded that she’s definitely making things worse. Besides being so open with somebody like Kaede, she makes an attempt with her class and while you might laugh at what occurs due to the difference in societal norms, that whole sequence just oozes with the way Koyuki ends up feeling awkward.

You’d think the way Konatsu steps in would mark the turning point and all would be well, but this book just goes to show that there are some problems you can’t wrap up in a single volume of a manga. Certainly not when the only person Koyuki seemingly won’t open up to is Konatsu herself.

At the end, I’d argue that things are even worse than when they started. Koyuki means well, but Konatsu has been utterly depressed this whole time and the former’s solution is so wrong-headed it’s painful. Kaede even warns her that she’s not considering Konatsu’s feelings, but it falls on deaf ears.

There’s a lot of frog and salamander imagery for you to digest, like a LOT, so people doing essays on symbolism for school file that one away just in case. This book’s taking an interesting look at how friendships decay with minimal effort, how communication not actually communicated is entirely ineffectual (go figure), and what defines being alone versus being lonely.

The latter’s really the meat of this. It turns out Konatsu is the one who really doesn’t want things to change and is fine just being Koyuki’s special friend. As Koyuki opens up to others, Konatsu’s afraid that she’ll lose that bond. There’s also the obvious irony that this fear is partly what’s pushing them both apart.

I’d say the downside is... no yuri... but this series has never really had any and the author’s continued dance around what this story even is makes me just want to shrug and not care. It’s fine without it. If they fall in love, fine, if they just stay ill-defined best friends, that works too. The characters and story are strong enough just as they are.

4 stars. There’s a lot to make a thoughtful meal of here and it’s sure not the least emotionally painful thing I’ve read lately but it resonates. It takes a lot to fix a friendship where two people are only talking to themselves and not one another, so it’s now a painful wait to see how it gets resolved.

I actually really relate to how Konatsu feels, especially when I was her age. The reality of feeling lonely despite being surrounded by people and the fear that your friends or the people will care about will move on from you. Hagino-sensei has done a good job of capturing that particular experience in young adulthood.

Wow what a frustrating volume! But not in a terribly bad way. These girls are so precious. I love seeing them experience love and friendship, but it is so painful to watch them feel those feelings of utter loneliness even when surrounded by friends. I hope to see a good resolution in the end. Which I'm sure we will get. Hope I can find the next volume soon!

Thank you to Edelweiss and the publisher for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Makoto Hagino is back with the next English-translated edition of a Tropical Fish Yearns for Snow. In the last edition, we followed Honami more closely and her emotions. In this book, we took the opposite route and followed Amano. Amano has seen Honami spending time with Kaede and it makes her nervous. When she once had Honami all to herself, she now realizes that things are changing.
This is once again a bit slow like the novel before it. However, I really enjoyed Amano’s perspective of the impending changes with Honami as she prepares to graduate. I do wish the girls relationship and the constant back and forth of not knowing how to communicate would start to grow, because at this point it’s starting to feel a little TOO slow.
I still love the story and find the art incredibly beautiful.

I read the german version and on the first page Konatsu says "...alles paletti!" and I just think that is hilarious so I needed to mention it even though I write these reviews in english.
This volume was very introspective again and it was good but I can't wait for Konatsu and Koyuki to finally properly talk about everything that has bin building up the past 2? 3? volumes. And I hope Konatsu learns to accept/enjoy Kaedes friendship again.

This volume was similar to the previous volume though we do see more Konastu and her feelings.

She bonded with Koyuki because of the shared feeling of isolation but not that Koyuki will be graduating soon and is starting to interact with more people, Konatsu feels like she may lose her.

The party was nice. It was sweet of her brother to follow her and see that she was okay and bring her more comfortable shoes cause he saw how uncomfortable she was in high heels.

I read online that volume 9 is the last volume so that means I wont get it until next year. I am glad I waited almost a year to read these because reading them when they came out would just made me upset.

I understand that high school is a time of memories and trying to figure out what you want to do with her life, and separating from friends. I've been through that and at 28 years old, I am still learning that.

I just wish they would talk to each other instead of holding it in. How long can you suppress something before it just makes you depressed where you isolate yourself because you do not understand why you are feeling the way you are? This kind of feels what is going on with the main character. Each knows that the other is important to them. One wants to break free and try to be more open while the other is afraid of change and wants things to stay the same, and is struggling with those changes.

I really do hope that they talk in the next volume at least a little. This miscommunication is becoming a bit too much.

Just like some other reviewers have said, Konatsu is moving into some dangerous codependency/toxic territory.

When you’re happy that your friend is coming out of their shell and is able to be themselves, yet at the same time you don’t want everyone to see them like that, you want to be the only one who can see their true self...
As incredibly selfish that is, I’m sure we all had that feeling at least with one person in our lives. Sometimes it gets so out of hand, we end up hating ourselves or the jealousy takes the better of us.

Either way, I could really relate to Konatsu a lot during this volume. To the point I teared up a bit. 😿
The fact how much I could relate to her though and how much it reminded me of a friendship I had in 8th-10th grade... is making me feel a little uneasy. And sad. And regretful. And mad at myself for being such a selfish dumbass! If I could've just gotten my act together back then...
I just hope Konatsu's able to come out of that deadly cycle. Seriously, the two girls need to have a conversation real bad! 😩

I’m a bit conflicted about Fuyuki stalking his sister. It is sweet how he worries about her and notices little things, like her wearing high-heels and how she isn’t comfortable. But completely going out of his way to “stalk” and follow her into another town, is a bit too much...
It was really nice of him to bring a pair of shoes for her though.

To me, this is one of the best volumes in the series because everything made sense after it. There is a Fall Out Boy lyric that heavily reminds me of the whole theme of this novel, "Let's be alone together." (The song is literally Alone Together). Obviously, Konatsu is not the only character this volume focuses on, but Konatsu's perspective was the one that stuck the most with me. Which is why this one was my favorite (so far).

This and last volume gave me a much larger appreciation of Kaede. Previously, I found her sort of uninteresting aside from just being another character to expand from our main leads. But she’s gotten a lot more depth as we see her more emotionally-in-tune side play out with both female leads. She’s helped both Koyuki and Konatsu with their emotions and it’s been great to read that. In the last volume she helped Koyuki more with getting them out. In this volume she instead plays much more behind-the-scenes matchmaker here with Konatsu to get them together.
We also see the fallout of Kaede and Koyuki spending more time as Konatsu is super bent out of shape. Her love for her is getting stronger and as Koyuki is getting more social and opening up it’s making her feel like she’ll get lost. That sort of jealousy and lack of understanding of her own jealousy was really well written and great to read. It’s really interesting to see how they both enjoy each other and as Koyuki continues on into a new stage of life (college) and gets more social how it’s been playing out. Konatsu is super angsty and hurt about it but struggles to understand her feelings as she bonded with Koyuki over their shared shyness and is scared of losing her both to college and as she moves on and gets more friends while Konatsu struggles and mires with her as her only friend. It’s so well-written and angsty and I love it. We also see more of Koyuki’s family and Kaede meddling to help her get out of her shell as they chase her around on a karaoke day with Konatsu having some juicy drama in there as well.

A Tropical Fish Yearns For Snow Vol. 6 continues to move slow as with a couple previous volumes, however the way Hagino explores the themes of loneliness, anxiety in a very relatable, realistic way that hits so emotionally!

Konatsu is feeling not only anxious, but dependent on Koyuki, however she herself is still unable to communicate her emotions to her. It's so realistic bc with anxiety the simplest of problems feel monumental to talk about so casually, which this manga captures perfectly.

Both Koyuki & Konatsu don't really want to drift apart, but can't find the right moment to talk about it. Its heartbreaking to read, but I'm positive they'll find a way over the next couple volumes.

The artwork showcases water and ocean motifs that highlight Konatsu and her loneliness in such a poetic way, while with Koyuki its more with her words. Kaede is sort of catching onto their friendship and trying to help! I wasn't sure how I felt about her in the beginning, but she is becoming a new favorite in this volume.

Oh no, Konatsu isn't in a good place in this volume. She's becomes really anxious when she sees Koyuki with spending time with others and she knows she should be happy but she isn't. That sounds bad and yeah, she should let Koyuki be with whoever she wants but she doesn't think that because she's mean but because she fears loneliness and that Koyuki won't be in her life anymore. But she can't bring herself to talk to Koyuki (or anybody else) about that. And she wallows in that mindset the whole volume.

It's heartbreaking actually. C'mon girls, talk to each other! Even though Konatsu's possessiveness isn't healthy, I think she'll sort out her feelings. I like this series because both girls are quite awkward though, a bit different than usual cheery-and-demure dynamic.

Also, what a good little brother Fuyuki is!

"If we lose what bound us together, what will be left?"
This volume focuses on loneliness, guilt, and repressing feelings. How relatable. The characters are going through a rough patch, but I have confidence they can work it out. They need some of Kaede's forthrightness, but it's tough for them.

I understand some ppl being irritated with the lack of communication, but to me it makes sense. If she doesn't think her feelings are valid, then confronting the person about it feels doubly guilty, because you are subjecting them to something you don't even think is fair. And so she'd rather stuff down those feelings hoping to eradicate them, but that doesn't really work. I've definitely felt similar to Konatsu, so I feel for her.

Initially NetGalley allowed me to read a digital copy of this book in exchange for a review. I wasn't able to access this copy before it expired, so I read the printed version of this book after it was released. This is my review of the printed version.

This volume was full of introspection from Konatsu on her relationship to Koyuki. Koyuki is moving forward in her relation to others around her and Konatsu isn't sure how she feels about that. There seems to be a bit of a disconnect/misunderstanding between the two of them that I hope will be cleared up in the next volume. (This one had a lot of strife and I really feel for the both of them.)

Just talk to each other already!!

Konatsu and Koyuki’s navigate their emotions and insecurities mostly in this volume. Koyuki continues to struggle with opening up, while Konatsu wrestles with her own feelings of uncertainty and admiration.

The aquarium club remains a space for growth, with side characters adding warmth and support. The art beautifully captures their quiet struggles and tender moments, balancing introspection with lightheartedness.

This volume subtly advances the story though it is still sometimes hard to follow along and lots of time sometimes passes between chapters polishing and sometimes ignoring big events in previous chapters.

This manga reminds me so much of myself. I want a pet salamander to take care of it and have some company, I work hard to be a marine biologist and I will most likely have to go study far away for it. I also have troubles letting go of my friends and opening up myself. The emotions of the main characters are very realistic and reminds me of what I feel in a daily life context. This is my comfort series and I’m scared to finish reading it because I know I will miss it.

A Tropicsl Fish Yearns for Snow, Vol. 6

This volume is angsty and a little depressing. The art is still gorgeous which is a huge part of why I love the series, but the last couple of volumes haven't been big hits for me. Hopefully the next will be better and it won't continue to go on this downward spiral for me.

4 stars. The teenage angst is real in this series. Like, it’s a lot and it’s melancholic as hell and these characters do not communicate whatsoever so everything is just eating them up inside. It’s sad and this volume in particular was a downer with few high moments but that’s okay. It was still good and I’m interested to see what’s going to happen next.

"What if I am not alone but still lonely?"

Koyuki wants to be someone else while Konatsu doesn't want her to change at all. These girls are codependent af, but I almost want them to take a toxic leap and give up everything for each other. It's a problem.
