From the award-winning author of The Promise Kitchen comes a riveting new story of twin sisters caught in their mother’s crosshairs on what to do about their disturbed younger sister.

Lush with devastating secrets, lies, romance and psychological drama…”You tell me about a family without a certain amount of dysfunction, and I’ll tell you that family is lying.”

After aimlessly traveling the country for fifteen years, Linnea Chandler returns to her hometown of Key West, Florida keeping the genesis of a life-altering phobia to herself—not a good idea, as she comes to find out. The 19th Century lighthouse that she, her parents and two sisters call home also has a troubled past, carrying the frightening myth that eerily mirrors the mystery of her younger sister today. Should Linnea run while she can?

The women must decide to what extremes they are willing to go to protect their secrets. Ignore the brutality behind the retrieval of spoils from a fatal shipwreck in 1857? Defy a 2017 hurricane threatening to pummel their town? And when their world is upended, do the women have the strength to move forward?

I’m thrilled with the release of “The Ruby of the Sea”. Writing this book did me in, more so than my others.

It took an army of professionals and friends to lend perspective and authenticity to Linnea, Delphina and Ivy’s story. I looked more to the council of others than I had done in my previous work. I've given everything I’ve got to this fragile crew--hopefully, the world is kind!

It's a gripping story of twin sisters caught in their mother’s crosshairs on what to do about their disturbed younger sister.

Lush with secrets, lies, romance and psychological drama…“You tell me about a family without a certain amount of dysfunction, and I’ll tell you that family is lying.”

Interested? Here's a mini synopsis:

My greatest hope is that you will enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing this third book-babe of mine.

My passion is writing novels that break down familial and cultural barriers. Creating a cast to populate a story is one of the great, cathartic joys of writing. Of particular pleasure to me is developing flawed characters-living in and reconciling with-the shadows cast by their equally flawed parents.

What an intriguing family drama, and isn’t that cover a beauty? I love watercolors.

Linnea has traveled the country for over a decade when she finally returns home to Key West, Florida. She has a secret, a mental illness.

Her family, including her parents and two sisters, live in an old lighthouse (do you know how much I love lighthouses?!). Their home also has secrets.

The story involves a shipwreck’s fortunes, an impending hurricane, and great tension throughout.

I think Peggy Lampman handled mental illness well, especially as it pertains to how family dynamics are impacted. There’s an intriguing mystery involved and lots of emotion.

The Ruby of the Sea is an evocative, dramatic, and tense story of secrets and family. I loved the complex characters most of all.

I received a gifted copy. All opinions are my own.

The Chandler family has lived in Key West for over 30 years in a 19th-century lighthouse with a dark history, the Maiden Tower. The youngest of three sisters, Ivy is a turbulent artist who hides away at the top of the tower battling unknown demons while her parents run a bed and breakfast below. Her older twin sisters, Linnea and Delphina, have grown apart over the past 15 years as Delphina settled in Key West and Linnea drifted across the country.

Each sister hides secrets from the others - a love affair, the origin of a phobia, and a serious mental illness - which are gradually revealed. Throughout it, all the sisters struggle with their conflicting emotions and familial ties. The dysfunctional relationships come to a head as a powerful storm drives the Chandlers from their home. When the unimaginable happens to their family, will the sisters move forward despite tragedy?

Peggy Lampman, the best-selling author of The Promise Kitchen, delivers a vivid depiction of Key West and difficult family dynamics. Each sister brings a powerful and provoking voice to the novel. The idyllic setting is the perfect backdrop for the dramatic, romantic, and painful story of three sisters.

We really need more books that touch on mental illness. This book had it all romance, family, drama. And some metal illness.
This is a book that takes a little time to move past so you can read the next book on your to be read stack.
I would recommend this 4 star book for a weekend read. Once you pick it up you are not going to want to put it down.

There is nothing more precious than the love that families share with each other. That love is often challenged with life, events, and secrets that bend that love to almost breaking. Ms. Lampman has written a book that challenges the Chandler family to the very core. It's an emotionally heart wrenching family drama about three sisters, Linnea and Delphina who are twins, and their younger sister, Ivy. Each one with secrets that they hold so close inside they lose their bonds of sistership. What are these secrets and why are they so difficult to share? This book takes you into the depths of the issues and your heart with it.

Linnea returns home to her family in Key West, Florida from being away for 15 years. Her family is far from the idyllic, perfect "Cleaver" family and is more to the dysfunctional end of the spectrum but they need her home so she returns. This is where the secrets, lies, deceit, painful pasts, and injured feelings start to unravel. Ms. Lampman took me into each of the character's lives in a very personal and intimate way. I felt for each one and her struggles. The story unfolds in chapters that rotate between the three sisters. It's a poignant story and written so that my heart felt each sister's hurts and anguish of what they were going through.

The setting of the story in Key West, Florida in telling this story was perfect. I've never been to Florida, let alone Key West but I have a vivid impression in my mind of a virtual visit from the great descriptive writing. I loved the historical lighthouse setting that the family runs a B&B out of. The Maiden Tower plays a crucial part in Ivy's story. The Foghorn House and Lightkeeper's Quarters are "home" for the family. The mystery surrounding the history of the grounds and stories were intriguing. Especially the mystery of the original lighthouse keeper's daughter, Rossalea, and the parallel with Ivy's story in the book. Then add an impending, historic hurricane into the scenario. How would such devastation change a family and would it bring the family together or tear them apart like the destruction of the hurricane? My emotions were so all over the place in this book. I became a part of the family and experienced their hurts and emotions as I turned the pages.

This is a very well written family drama that addresses the issues of mental illness, family dysfunction and what the effects are to a family. I want to thank Peggy Lampman for writing such a heart tugging novel. I am so grateful for the ARC copy and the honor of reading this book. This is my own, heart felt review of this wonderful book.

This is one of those rare books that I had to wait a few days before I could write my review. The characters continued to resonate in my thoughts after the last page and I wanted to make sure that I could wait to give an honest review. My short review is YOU MUST READ THIS NEW NOVEL by Peggy Lampman. My longer and more in depth review follows:

This beautiful and well written novel is about a family in Key West, Florida - not just the Key West that we've all seen in movies or as tourists but the Key West that isn't full of tourists and souvenir shops. Twin sisters Linnea and Delphina were very close when they were younger but now they are nothing alike and not close to each other at all. They are in their early 30s and Linnea has moved to Idaho and returns home rarely while Delphina runs a snorkeling company with her husband in Key West and is proud to be part of the island. They have a younger sister Ivy who spends most of her time at home alone creating art. Their parents run a b&b and the twins think they are overly protective of Ivy and vow that they will spend some time with their sister and find out what's going on in her life.

All of the sisters are hiding secrets from each other and as those secrets are gradually reveled throughout the book, the reader can only feel more compassion for each of them. Parts of the novel are fun - parades in Key West, chickens roaming the streets but parts of it are very difficult and deal with mental illness and dysfunctional families. ”You tell me about a family without a certain amount of dysfunction, and I’ll tell you that family is lying." A hurricane heading towards Key West makes the family members realize the things that are most important in life are not their possessions but each other.

First off, I love stories about sisters plus I love stories set in southern locales so this book was a hit for me. But more than that, it was a story that made me laugh out loud in parts and made me 'ugly cry' a few pages later. The characters are well written and very real and it becomes easy to identify and care about them. I loved-loved-loved this novel and highly recommend it.

Thanks to the author for a copy of this book to read and review. All opinions are my own.

-BOOK REVIEW (ARC): The Ruby of the Sea by author Peggy Lampman

-Releasing 2020

Allow me to begin by saying~ Very few books will wake me in the middle of the night and whisper, "it's time to experience more." This book was more than whispering to me, it was touching my heart. Truly.

A powerful story steeped rich in historical legend, family dysfunction, personal triumphs, the tender subject of mental illness along with secrets, drama, romance and the very personal journey of finding ones own way through hope, faith, love and determination ...

The characters and their narrative are written by this award-winning, talented author, as real and believable, endearing and compelling, with the intensity of the sea itself, yet delivered to its reader as lyrical and more importantly, human.

It will latch onto your every emotion as you journey with The Chandler family, their historical status within their community, as well as their haunts, heart break and personal victories not only as a family unit, but as individuals yearning for the peaceful and tranquil.

Linnea Chandler returns to her family’s home, now a B & B, in a 19th Century lighthouse in Key West, after a fifteen-year absence of her own choosing. Reunited with her twin sister, Delphina, and their younger sister, Ivy, the dysfunction of their relationships becomes apparent and is exacerbated by the alternate reality their parents espouse as they continue to bury demons … some imagined, others true. Secrets and lies conflict with Linnea’s wavering desire to make things right. She struggles with fighting the urge to flee or succumbing to finally facing truths. An unexpected love affair and impending hurricane add to the drama.

Peggy Lampman’s writing is beautiful, intense, literary and compelling. She draws the reader deep into the heart of the story as her characters come alive and take us to unimagined places.

A most satisfying read, but difficult at times. Tissue alert! This is a book you will be recommending to everyone and most definitely will pick up to read again, as I did.

I was so excited when Peggy reached out and asked if I would read The Ruby Of The Sea in exchange for a review copy. This was the first book I have read of hers and now I need to get my hands on her others!! I don't read a lot of Women's Fiction and really need to change that.

The Ruby Of The Sea is a beautifully written emotional rollercoaster ride. I was captivated on page one and couldn't put it down. The characters are extremely well developed and I found myself connecting with them immediately. I enjoyed the alternating chapters between the sisters and learning more about each of them as well as the other characters throughout the story. Overall, a really great five star read!

A huge thank you to Peggy for sending me an advance copy! I look so forward to reading more of your work.

This is a rich, poignant and heartbreaking story that is centered on twin sisters, Delphina and Linnea. The story is told in their alternating viewpoints along with their younger sister Ivy.

The family is coming into grips trying to help their mother and their younger sister Ivy who has bipolar disorder. The story is set in Key West, Florida where they live in a 19th century lighthouse with a history of its own.

Immersed in the issues of mental health and family drama, this family tries to face their demons and strengthen each other by uncovering secrets, learning to face the truth, and hope to come out stronger than ever to keep their family intact.

Lampman’s brilliance is in creating these flawed characters you would love to read about. It’s a great story to get lost in, in one afternoon. I enjoyed getting transported to Key West and the mysterious light house with an eery past connected to a fatal shipwreck in 1857.

I recommend this read for those that enjoy a character driven story line and a contemporary family drama. Get ready with your tissues in hand as this story is bittersweet. I really enjoyed this read.

On the back cover: "You tell me about a family without a certain amount of dysfunction, and I’ll tell you that family is lying.”

I have been saying something close to this for years. Life is messy. Families are complicated. Marriage takes effort and hard work. If someone does not believe this, they are lying. The Ruby of the Sea is an extremely well written, deeply emotional book! I felt, from the beginning, that it was like a run-away train heading to a ravine, with the bridge missing. Impending doom was in the recesses of my mind. Little did I realize, it was not an escaped train, it was a hurricane coming.

I have never been to Key West, but I definitely felt like I was there with the author's fantastic descriptions. I do have firsthand knowledge of hurricanes and the author hit that feeling spot on!
The characters are well developed and I cared about them almost immediately. They are flawed and realistic. This book spoke to me on so many levels. I have dealt with many of the issues that arise in this book. I suppose that is why I felt for the characters so deeply.

I highly recommend this wonderfully developed family drama, full of heartbreak, hope and survival.

I want to thank the author for giving me the honor of reading the ARC of her book. This review is my own opinion, not influenced by receiving the Advanced Reader's Copy.

This is a book that is going to stay with me for a long time. It's an exquisitely written portrayal of family dynamics, sexual abuse and bipolar disorder. It's main characters are three sisters, Delphina, Linnea and Ivy. I grew to love them all. I felt a kinship with this book because I have dealt with sexual abuse and also suffer from bipolar disorder. I knew what Ivy was going through before the story unfolded. The characters are true to life and perfectly developed throughout the book. This is also a story filled with secrets but also filled with love. It definitely gave me the feels. I felt the love, the sadness and the grief. I loved this book and so will you. It is as informative as it is believable. You will understand how difficult bipolar disorder is on the person dealing with it as it is on all those who love them. Thank you Peggy for writing this book. I highly recommend it to all.

The Ruby of the Sea is a compelling book about sisters, the their love for each other, their shared past, and secrets. This is an emotional read that deals with mental illness and environmental issues, along with this story of family. I’m glad that the story was told from each of the sisters’ point of view, so that we really got to find out what was in their hearts. Key West provides a wonderful setting for this story.

Family is everything! You can’t choose them, and there is no doubt some are wonderful and some not so perfect. We all know this. In this poignant, heartfelt, touching story that took me on an unbelievable emotional journey The Ruby of the Sea will open your eyes to the truth about some very difficult topics that the world needs to be more aware of in my opinion. Family dysfunction and mental illness, and other topics we don’t talk about openly wreak havoc in people’s lives. In this story I was brought to tears by the truth of that, having experienced it in my own life.

The narrative of Florida’s Key West was delightful, having been a resident of Florida myself and once enjoying the splendor of the beaches and oceans. Parts of the story were funny, while other parts were dramatic, serious and heart wrenching. I cried a million tears! I was drawn to every character and felt completely absorbed in the mystery of their lives.

The story is about a 19th Century Lighthouse legend, the history of The Chandler family, now the owners, and the secrets, lies, dishonesty, and painful truths. Twins sisters Delphina and Linnea used to be close, but have lost their sisterhood bond. They both struggle with troubled pasts. Their younger sister Ivy is an impressive artist hiding out in the families Maiden Tower, also home to the portrait of the original lighthouse keepers daughter Rossalea. When a hurricane threatens the Keys, and their world is changed forever will faith, strength and love bring this family together again?

Peggy Lampman wrote a beautiful story that will stay with me long after I’ve closed the book. I appreciated the conclusion in the afterwards where she offers help to those in need. With sincere gratitude, thank you!!

I received an advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Wow! I literally could not put this book down once I started it. It's an emotional roller coaster of a read with beautifully written characters who I felt attached to from page one.

I just adore the characters Peggy Lampman has created, and how real and flawed and beautiful they are. You'll definitely relate to them, and to the family drama that unfolds with each page. This book is full of strong female characters, family love and loyalty, secrets, and devastation. And it's written with such heart, that I already know it will be one of my favorite and most recommended reads of 2020.💕

I received an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review. Opinions are strictly my own.

Peggy Lampman’s latest book rocked me to the core. I had to sit and think about it after finishing it. It is a powerful and important book. It is a love letter to Key West but more importantly a novel that tackles the subject of

mental illness in a sensitive yet non compromising way. The characters were all Real to me and I loved them with all their foibles. I am so glad the author wrote this book!❤️ Please read it when it debuts in February. I will be writing more about it when it is closer to the publishing date. Linda's Book Obsession Reviews "The Ruby of the Sea" by Peggy Lampman, February 2020

Peggy Lampman, author of "The Ruby of the Sea" has written an emotional and captivating novel. The Genres for this novel are Psychological Drama, Fiction, and Romance. The timeline of the story is in the author's present and goes to the past when it pertains to the characters or events. The story takes place in Key West Florida. The author describes her characters as dysfunctional, complex and complicated.

The author discusses the importance of family. Yet the Chandler family has deep dark secrets, lack of communication, and strange dynamics. Linnea Chandler has returned to Key West to see her family. Linnea has not been truthful about the reason she has been away for many years.  She has been away from her twin sister and her younger sister Ivy. Ivy is artistic, but her mother keeps the two twin sisters from seeing her for any length of time because Ivy has migraines. The Chandler family lives in a 19th Century lighthouse and uses it as an inn for income. Their father tells the haunted story of the lighthouse to his guests.

As a threat of a major and devastating hurricane approaches, deep dark secrets will be revealed that can be as hurtful as the effects of the hurricane.

I appreciate that the author discusses the importance of getting treatment for mental illness, and therapy for rape and abuse.  The author also mentions protecting the environment.  Peggy Lampman talks about forgiveness, second chances, the importance of family, love, and hope.  I love how the author writes and vividly describes food, Cuban food, and lemon meringue pie. I would recommend this intense novel for those readers that enjoy a Psychological Drama.

Set against the colorful backdrop of Key West, The Ruby of the Sea is the story of three sisters, twins Linnea and Delphina and their younger sister Ivy. What at first feels like a lighter, beach-y read of family drama and the bond of sisters, becomes a book that dives into serious topics of mental health, rape and the struggles of being a new mother. The author has an afterward of the situations in her own life that prompted her to write the book and it provided a meaningful wrap up to a really good read.

What a beautifully written masterpiece The Ruby of the Sea is by Peggy Lampman! From family dynamic, sexual assault, mental illness, and sisterly love, you are taken to a place that no one wants to discuss, and therefore, causes long-term effects on this entire family, as well as the characters who surround them. I felt one part of the ending coming, but never would have guessed at the rest. I won't ruin this fabulous work of art by revealing the story. Each character has his or her own unique personally, making the story and the dynamics even more involved as you read it! The prose is articulate, well-structured, and heartfelt.
There were many of life's most important lessons interspersed throughout the book: forgiveness, facing your fears, being non-judgmental of others, empathy, dealing with devastating losses, and most importantly to me, learning to take one day at a time, and get the most from each day as it comes you!
I loved this book and would recommend it to all of my reading friends! Thank you, Peggy Lampman for reminding me of the things that truly matter each day, and to stop being concerned over those mundane experiences that in the whole scheme of life mean very little! Life is definitely short!

In THE RUBY OF THE SEA Peggy Lampman casts the net early and I was captivated on page one. The Chandler family lives in a lighthouse in Key West, Florida. They're loving, quirky, dysfunctional and have a heartbreaking secret. I felt a personal connection to each of them and the beauty of their somewhat broken and cracked relationships is that the love shines through.
Well placed humor and a subplot surrounding the family business that adds an element of mystery, as well as a romance carry us through the depth of this poignant and atmospheric story.
Through vivid descriptions of the beautiful sea life and a small town on the coast I felt as if I was the Chandler's neighbor and friend. The tempo of Ms. Lampman's writing kept me turning the pages and beckoned me in the night to visit the lighthouse for just a while more.
This story addresses Mental Illness in a sensitive yet realistic and responsible manner, with an emotional impact I did not foresee. It makes us question how we love, the secrets we keep to protect those we love and how they may destroy us all. And yet, it shows us that love, acceptance and forgiveness can prevail.
Because of the poignant writing I experienced this story in a very visceral manner. I thought about the fate of the entire family and I closed this book fully satisfied that despite the circumstances of their lives, they'll be okay.
I strongly recommend this book to the reader who enjoys family drama that is realistic and relatable. Book Clubs will find much to discuss. This is not a quick beach read but rather an emotional novel of which you will want to absorb every word. This book emotionally gutted me and I loved it.
My deepest praises to Peggy Lampman and much respect for her addressing a difficult topic in such an honest manner.
I was provided an ARC of this book by the author. This is my unbiased and thoughtful review which is voluntarily written.

This is a breathtaking novel that will leave you speechless! The lives of three sisters seem to be intertwined not only by blood but by hidden secrets that will lead to a devastating end. Twin sister's Linnea and Delphina have always been close but living thousands of miles apart, there are some distances that cannot be bridged. Coming home to Key West for a visit is hard for Linnea because she has a phobia of the ocean due to past secrets that she will not reveal. Being attracted to the one man that hurt her twin, Delphina, by spreading rumors about her in high school, makes it even more difficult. Will Linnea be able to be with the one man she can trust or will her love for her sister Delphina keep her from following her hearts desire? Delphina is having a hard time trying to deal with her family's finances, as well as, being a new mother. Always one to never let go, Delphina cannot understand how her twin could possibly be dating the one man that she despises the most. The turmoil that these sisters face is made even bigger with the knowledge that their baby sister, Ivy, has a mental illness. Not understanding what is going on with Ivy, Linnea and Delphina do not buy the excuses their mother keeps making up. When a hurricane is approaching, the residents of Key West evacuate to safety. Will the aftermath be more than the Chandler family can handle? Will one tragedy release years of secrets? Author Peggy Lampman has written an emotional novel that will show the devastating effects of hiding from mental illness. Seeing so much of my past in this story made me more thankful that the stereotypical outlook on Mental Illness has lessened as more awareness is made. I look forward to seeing what this amazing author has in store for her reader's next!

THE RUBY OF THE SEA
By Peggy Lampman

An exceptional familial tale that takes you to the very heart of a family and looks into the innermost depths of the good and bad that a person can exemplify. To learn what you think you know about someone that’s as close to you as can be but to realize you don’t know them at all. This book shows how human connections are formed and how easily they can be broken. Told from the perspective of three daughters; two whom are twin adult daughters (Delphina & Linnea), they tell tales of their lives, their sister Ivy and their parents. They find mental illness running rampant and could cost one of them their life. The fears and trauma from the past and the the grudge and anger that Delphina still holds against a former foe from High School prevents a future for someone else.

You become so immersed in this highly descriptive world that you don’t want it to end. You feel the apprehension that the characters would feel as news breaks of an approaching hurricane. The thoughts and worries race through your mind as you silently speak to the characters as if they can hear you. That’s how deep you fall into this story that is so exceptionally told. I will definitely be checking out her other novels as this was fulfilling and in depth read with drama, fear, love and intrigue. Not a quick read, get ready to embrace a weekend full of reading without interruption.

Ruby of the Sea is a very well written, deeply emptional book set in Key West. Family love at times can be challenged by many different issues. The Chandler family is one of those families, this book is gut wretching at times as the sisters come to terms with one sisters bout with mental issue. You may want to have a box of tissues handy while you read this book. The author has the ability to pull her readers into the lives of her characters. I received a ARC from the author and am under no obligation to leave a good review. This is my fair and honest review and I would recommend this book to others.

You know the old saying, "You can't go home again"? Linnea is harboring a secret from her teen years that makes home a place she doesn't want to be. When Linnea does go home, to picturesque Key West, after 12 years away, will she be able to leave again?

The Ruby of the Sea is full of family secrets, drama, a little mystery and sheds a much needed light on mental illness. I enjoyed the vivid descriptions of the setting (how great would it be to live in an historic lighthouse?). I appreciated that even though the mental illness was initially a secret, once it was out, it was discussed openly and positively.

Thank you to the author for the advanced copy; all opinions are my own.
